 Narrated by Jeff Goldblum, this film captures the humor and drama of director Norman Jewison’s quest to recreate the lost world of Jewish life in Tsarist Russia and re-envision the beloved stage hit as a widescreen epic. Oscar-nominated filmmaker Daniel Raim puts us in the director’s chair and in Jewison’s heart and mind, drawing on behind-the-scenes footage and never-before-seen stills, as well as original interviews with Jewison, actor Chaim Topol (Tevye), composer John Williams, production designer Robert F. This film is about the founding of Open Arms Sea Rescue, an organization that has, so far, saved more than 60,000 refugees from the Mediterranean Sea.

 Two Spanish lifeguards, Oscar and Gerard, travel to the Greek island of Lesbos after seeing the heart-wrenching photograph of a little boy drowned in the Mediterranean Sea. They arrive to discover a shocking reality: thousands of people risking their lives every day trying to cross the sea in the most precarious of vessels, fleeing from armed conflicts and other miseries in their home countries. What shocked them the most, though, was that many countries have ordered their Coast Guards not to rescue these refugees, but to let them drown. Oscar and Gerard fight to do the job none of the authorities are doing and provide support to the thousands of people who so badly need it. For all involved, this first trip will turn into an odyssey, one that will change their lives forever.  Douglas Tirola’s thrilling documentary of famed composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein expertly tells the story of an immigrant son who became a phenom as the visionary and exuberant conductor of the New York Philharmonic, and composer of one of the most thrilling orchestral works ever heard on Broadway, West Side Story. For decades, he was the face of classical music for the nation. Bernstein joyfully responded to the clamor of his times, matching his passion for music with an unyielding commitment to political engagement while, as Tirola reveals, wrestling with what he called “the demons” of his hidden sexuality. We see Bernstein as a tireless participant in the anti-war and civil rights movements, and a factor in the de-escalation of tensions between the U.S. and U.S.S.R. Incredibly, Tirola uses Bernstein’s own voice almost exclusively to turn the maestro’s life story into a call to action for artists and the people that believe in the arts to create change in our society today, with the goal of bringing freedom and respect to all people.  In 1961, Kempton Bunton, a 60-yearold taxi driver, stole Goya’s portrait of the Duke of Wellington from the National Gallery in London. It was the first (and remains the only) theft in the Gallery’s history. Kempton sent ransom notes saying that he would return the painting on condition that the government invested more in care for the elderly—he had long campaigned for pensioners to receive free television. What happened next became the stuff of legend. Only 50 years later did the full story emerge: Kempton had spun a web of lies. The only truth was that he was a good man, determined to change the world and save his marriage. How and why he used the Duke to achieve that is a wonderfully uplifting tale. With gleaming white marble floors, walls and polished brass, the Automats welcomed anybody with at least a nickel in their pocket to put in a slot, and the little glass door would open to releasethecustomer’s pick, be it a slice of pie, macaroni & cheese, or a Salisbury steak. This film is an endearing first-time look into one of the most successful business ventures of its time through the eyes of those touched by their experiences.

Emulating his Viking ancestors (and lying to his wife about being away at a corporate team-building seminar), Martin follows his mid-life crisis north to the Scandinavian forests, armed only with his homemade bow and arrows, along with an ensemble of animal skins. But Martin’s arrows are woefully ineffective at killing fresh game, so out of desperation, he steals food and becomes a wanted man. A chance meeting with a fugitive named Musa leads to a twisted trip through the fjords with police, drug runners and Martin’s family not far behind. As an unlikely friendship develops, Martin’s quest for manhood leads to deep and hilariously uncomfortable realizations about the presumed masculine ideal.  Like his heroes, Ghandi and Martin Luther King, farmworker Cesar Chavez used the power of non-violent strikes, boycotts and marches to shine a national spotlight on the unfathomable living conditions of farmworkers in California—the rampant child labor, 16-hour workdays, lack of medical care, dilapidated shacks for homes and the fact that many were never paid at all. Although they often faced violent opposition and hatred, Chavez and the United Farm Workers persevered, grew into a strong political force and, with the help of Governor Jerry Brown, saw California pass the most favorable labor laws in the U.S. Chavez changed Chicano history, but it was the early, enthusiastic support of musicians and artists that helped plant the seeds of the movement nationwide. Through stunning archival soundtracks and interviews that include Carlos Santana, Joan Baez, Cheech Marin, Edward James Olmos, Dolores Huerta and Maya Angelou, this film takes us back to the beginning.

She undertakes a journey with her daughter’s small body hidden in a box and meets Lynx, a solitary boy who has keen survival smarts, and they set off on an adventure in hope of a miracle. Black person ever. This documentary explores the gap between Boulder’s progressive self-image and the lived experiences of its small but resilient Black community. Zayd Atkinson, a University of Colorado student who was performing his work study job cleaning up the grounds of his dorm, was threatened by a police officer, and soon by eight officers with guns drawn. He lived to tell the story that many Black men don’t survive. While it has a unique history, Boulder is emblematic of liberal, white, university-based communities that profess an inclusive ethic but live a segregated reality. This is [Not] Who We Are shares the voices of Boulder’s African-American community and shows both how deeply the roots of institutional racism are embedded and how to open pathways for dialogue, insight and change.

 Occupied France, 1942. Gilles is arrested by SS soldiers along-

side other Jews and sent to a camp in Germany. He narrowly avoids sudden execution by swearing to the guards that he is not Jewish, but Persian. This lie temporarily saves him, but Gilles gets assigned a life-or-death mission: to teach Farsi to the head of Camp Koch, who dreams of opening a restaurant in Iran once the war is over. Through an ingenious trick, Gilles manages to survive by inventing words of “Farsi” every day and teaching them to Koch. The particular relationship between the two men sparks the jealousy of other prisoners and SS guards towards Gilles. and his climbing partner, Daniele Nardi, who disappeared on Nanga Parbat, one of the Himalayas’ most deadly mountains, in 2019. Using Tom’s own extraordinary footage taken in the days before his death, the film explores what made Tom and Daniele continue their ascent after other members of the expedition turned back. Tom was the son of mountaineer Alison Hargreaves, who perished on K2 in 1995. Mother and son, two of the greatest climbers of all time, died at almost the same age, in the same mountain range, both doing what they loved best. Back in 1995, a grief-stricken Jim Ballard took his children, Tom (6) and Kate (4), on an expedition to K2’s basecamp to say farewell to their mother. The result was a BBC film, Alison’s Last Mountain. The Last Mountain follows Tom’s younger sister, Kate, on an eerily similar trip to say goodbye to her brother on Nanga Parbat, and to help in the search for the bodies. It’s an unforgettable story of a family who lived—and was prepared to die—for the love of scaling the icy heights of the world’s highest peaks.

 Yuri, 16, has lived all his life in Gagarine Towers, a vast red brick housing project on the outskirts of Paris named after Yuri Gagarin, the first human to journey into outer space. From the heights of his apartment, Yuri dreams of becoming an astronaut. But when plans to demolish Gagarine Towers are leaked, Yuri joins the resistance. PERSIAN LESSONS

Occupied France, 1942. Gilles is arrested by SS soldiers alongside other Jews and sent to a camp in Germany. He avoids sudden execution by swearing to the guards that he is not Jewish, but Persian—a lie. Yet Gilles gets assigned a life-or-death mission: to teach Farsi to the head of Camp Koch, who dreams of opening a restaurant in Iran after the war. Through an ingenious trick, Gilles manages to survive by inventing words of “Farsi” and teaching them to Koch. Douglas Tirola’s documentary of famed composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein tells the story of an immigrant son who became a phenom as the visionary and exuberant conductor of the New York Philharmonic, and composer of one of the most thrilling orchestral works on Broadway, West Side Story. We also see Bernstein as a tireless participant in the anti-war and civil rights movements, and a factor in the de-escalation of tensions between the U.S. and U.S.S.R. Incredibly, Tirola uses Bernstein’s own voice almost exclusively to turn the maestro’s life story into a call to action for artists and the people that believe in the arts to create change in our society today.
