Armando Silva came to Northern Colorado when he was 5 years old from Sombrerete, Zacatecas, Mexico. He became immersed in pop culture in America and found he had a knack for the visual and performing arts. Since then he has become a staple in the artistic community. “I believe with my artistic powers I have a responsibility within my community to lead, educate and give back.”

Summer isn’t complete without a trip to the Greeley Stampede. Colorado’s premier summer event celebrates freedom with a series of Superstar concerts, a carnival, parade, a firework show like no other, rodeos, a car show and food court with local fares. There’s something for every age at the Stampede so you can take the whole family.

LYNN BASSETT’S DANCE FACTORY Lynn Bassett has been teaching dance since 1973 and is trained in tap, jazz and ballet. She started her studio in the basement of her parents’ home over 40 years ago and has since seen it grow to what it is today. Lynn is dedicated to bringing the best of dance education and instruction to her school.

THE BURROUGHS

The signature fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, Relay for Life is organized entirely by volunteers as a way to honor cancer survivors, remember those we’ve lost, and raise money to help erase cancer. The last Relay for Life event in Greeley raised nearly $250,000 for cancer research and patient care programs.

The Burroughs are on their way to becoming a claim to fame for Greeley. The nine-piece band has been playing its signature “Sweaty Soul Music,” since 2013 and recently released their full-length studio album, “Got To Feel.” Not only do they rock hard, they give back to their community through music clinics and joint performances with high school bands around the city.

Drew Anderson has spent five years training clients at Team Tom Fitness in Greeley. He’d been involved in fitness and competitive power lifting when he had an opportunity to start working at the gym, and as he says, he went with it. The ASFA and NASM-CPT Certified personal trainer is a former member of the U.S. Army Military Police Corps, a deep-sea oil field diver and a powerlifting state record holder in the Master 1/242-pound class. Anderson specializes in boot camp training, powerlifting, strength and conditioning, weight loss, and overall physical preparedness training. On the gym webpage it says that “through encouragement, personalized attention, and challenge, [Anderson] takes his clients toward their goals, whether they are competitive or looking for

increased overall health and fitness.” Anderson also has a degree in sport and exercise science, and does personal training on the side, working around his full-time job. But working with his clients and training others is a source of joy for him. “I love the interactions,” he says. “Having fun with the clients and helping them realize the goals they set and make them happen is the best part.” He trains between 10 and 15 clients at Team Tom, teaches four Bootcamp classes a week and

works as a trainer for the Colorado Dance Collective. More than simply exercise, Anderson works with his clients on conditioning, recovery and nutrition. “It’s a quality of life issue,” Anderson says of personal fitness. “Good health. Good nutrition. Your quality of life and overall joy in life will be so much better.” Anderson’s advice for those wanting to start a new path of health and nutrition is this, “The first step is to get yourself a trainer. They can guide you through taking those first steps and guide you in the right direction so you’re not overdoing it. I see people who have never worked out before go crazy their first day and not realize how all the little pieces of this fit together and then they never come back.”

When you think of a warm hug, it’s hard not to smile. Even more so if you’re the lucky recipient of one. So it makes sense that Warm Hugs has found itself at the top as friendliest store and runner up for best customer service in the annual Best of Greeley. Suzanne Sereff started selling her family’s dessert mixes in a corner of one of her friend’s booths at a church craft show. “I’d just had my first baby and wanted to make a little Christmas cash. The first day we sold out. It started there and I’ve been doing it for 24 years now, slowly growing and expanding,” she said. She attributes the success of her mixes to the way they prepare them — with love. “We have a following of people who love our family recipe. They’re all from scratch and good for you. My grandma was always baking. She’d have a bucket of cookies. Her house was on the way home from school so we’d always stop for a cookie. Because I love them I know people will enjoy them. We started with Grandma’s sweet things and my husband is a great cook too so we

started packaging his soup mixes.” Sereff sews and decorates each package herself, essentially sending a warm hug to her customers who purchase her mixes. Nine years ago she decided to venture out and open a retail store, Warm Hugs. Sereff has expanded to include clothing, jewelry and other unique items her customers can’t find elsewhere. “I didn’t ever dream that we’d be doing this, and now we also carry clothing and jewelry. In getting to know our customers we’ve found they want things you can’t find at big box stores. Our items are interesting, relevant, sometimes funny, but always good,” Sereff said. Two years ago they moved retail spaces after outgrowing their first

one, but although they’re growing their focus on customer service has never wavered. “When customers walk in they are always greeted. We’re always checking in to see if they need help. All our staff are genuine people and being genuine is a big deal. We really do want to help them solve their gifting challenges. People can tell. Our employees enjoy working here.” Sereff said her customer enjoy knowing they’re shopping local and spending money with someone who lives in the community they do. “Our customers are awesome. We’re so grateful,” she said. As for her business, Sereff said it’s finally reaching maturity and she’s taking advantage of all her available space and skills to provide more “hugs” than ever. “It’s all grown up. My kids and it have grown together,” she said. “They’re working here this summer. It’s still a family business and I plan for it to stay a family business for a very long time.”
