We existed on paper in New York City long before Nathan Meeker brought his Union Colonists to the confluence of the Cache La Poudre and South Platte Rivers, making us one of the first planned communities in the nation. Statistics show that Greeley is one of the fastest growing areas in the country, both in population and job growth. The Northern Colorado region is outpacing the country in many ways. Our unemployment rate is among the lowest in the nation — with plenty of jobs to go around. Our balanced economy is a key reason we continue to emerge as a leader in industry. Founded as an agricultural colony in 1869, Greeley’s economy still includes a healthy agri-business sector. The energy sector also plays a significant role in Weld county in fact, more oil and gas well permits were pulled in Weld County than in any other county in Colorado. History
W
hen the transcontinental railroad was completed in 1869, a spur from Cheyenne to Denver was build, opening this part of the country for settlement. Nathan Meeker, Horace Greeley’s agricultural editor at the New York Tribune, was inspired to create an agricultural utopia in the west. The city of Greeley was born where the railroad crossed the confluence of the Platte and Cache la Poudre rivers a location with abundant sunshine and fertile farmland. Early in the settlement’s development, an irrigation canal became priority construction, ultimately creating an agricultural oasis in the middle of a high desert habitat. Throughout its history, this area has been celebrated for growing potatoes, sugar beets, corn and onions, among many other crops – all made possible on irrigated farmland. As the county seat of Weld County, Greeley became a shopping and business hub for northern Colorado. Agriculture continued to be a large part of the economy, in the form of cattle feeding and beef processing but other industries and major employers have become important economic drivers. State Farm Insurance
Companies created a large presence with a regional office serving the Rocky Mountain region. Healthcare and higher education resources grew into major employers. In the late Twentieth century, oil and gas development exploration became more concerted, developing into a dominant economic force. As population growth has exceeded the national average, Greeley has extended city limits, expanding west toward the mountains.

Arriving in Greeley
T
he original Union Colony (now Greeley) was founded at the confluence of the Cache la Poudre and South Platte rivers. Today, you’ll find us at the intersection of U.S. Highways 85 and 34. You can get to Denver International Airport or to our glorious Rocky Mountains in an hour. Once you arrive in Greeley, you’ll find a practical grid system of streets (running east and west) and avenues (running north and south). When you master the numbering system, you can find just about anything with ease. Our street numbers begin in north Greeley, and avenue numbers begin at the Highway 85 Bypass. If you’re looking at the mountains, you’re facing west. Greeley-Evans Transit offers fixed-route and paratransit services within the community, and you can catch a bus to Denver or Cheyenne for crosscountry connections at its headquarters. The new Poudre Express commuter bus service connects Greeley, Windsor, and Fort Collins. The GreeleyWeld County Airport, just three miles east of Greeley, is perfectly positioned to service the needs of all general and business aviation users.

S
eniors are opting to retire in communities where they feel they belong and can make an impact. With a nice balance of population, and housing and entertainment options priced so you can live comfortably, Greeley is the community for you. High quality medical facilities, a nationally recognized university, and less traffic than you might have in larger metropolitan areas are draws. The Greeley population consists of significant numbers of retirees (as well as young adults). While the share of age 65+ was 10 percent of all of Greeley’s population in 2000, in 2015 that increased to 13 percent. Education
reeley-Evans School District 6 educates 23,000 students in 36 schools, offering opportunity and choice for families and students in Greeley and Evans. Established in 1870, the school district has grown by more than 7,000 students over the past 20 years and is the 13th largest school district in the state of Colorado. District 6 has a focused strategic plan – Innovation2020 – that drives the work districtwide. Most of the objectives included in Innovation2020 are achieved, and the plan will be revised in 2020. Over the past several years, District 6 has seen a steady growth in on-time graduation rates, as well as improvements in student achievement. Schools are focused on the personal learning needs of every student, ensuring that all students graduate with the skills they need to enter a career or college. Students can enroll in 33 career pathways in 12 career academies across the District, from Advanced Manufacturing at Greeley Central High School, Agriculture and Horticulture at Greeley West High School and Science, Technology, Engineering and Math at Northridge High School. Students can also participate in paid internships, apprenticeships and job shadowing experiences to explore different careers. In addition, students can take college classes while in high school through concurrent enrollment at Aims Community College or the University of Northern Colorado, or even earn an associate’s degree while in high school at Early College Academy. aims.edu Aims Community College has been the first step in higher education for thousands of students, with excellent transferability to four-year institutions. Aims is also the goto campus for technical training, adapting and developing new programs for local industry. The college offers more than 200 degree and certificate programs delivering well over 4,000 courses per year. Student centric scheduling offers daytime, evening, weekend, and online options. unco.edu As one of the founding principles of the Union Colonists in 1869, education quickly became a priority for the new community. At the request of Greeley citizens, the state of Colorado located its teacher training school here. The State Normal School, founded in 1889, offered two-year teacher certificates, and began offering graduate degrees in 1913. UNC received its university designation in 1970 and currently offers more than 100 undergraduate and 120 graduate programs to over 12,000 students. Its students come from all 50 states and some 40 countries. Beyond its Greeley campus, UNC delivers 60 programs through extended studies in Loveland, Denver, Colorado Springs and online. Small class sizes and a low student-to-faculty ratio (16:1) dominate courses at UNC. More than half of classes have fewer than 30 students. Six colleges offer awardwinning education across campus, taught more often by tenured faculty than teaching assistants. Parks and Recreation
N
ewcomers to Greeley often comment on the number of parks they see in our community. With more than 40 parks and open spaces, you’ll find abundant opportunities for outdoor recreation. Our parks include walking trails, picnic shelters, sports courts, and playgrounds. During the summer, you can cool off at our pools and splash parks. Last year, a network of three new and state of the art skate parks were completed. Hazelton Park in west Greeley will open in the spring of 2020- making it Greeley’s 43rd park. The Poudre River Trail extends across the north side of Greeley for more than 20 miles. It’s perfect for walking, running, or cycling – or simply enjoying the calm along the Cache la Poudre River. Greeley’s streets include approximately 85 miles of designated bicycle paths for safe riding. Last year, 1.5 miles of a new regional trail with a major extension of the Sheep Draw Trail opened. Within Greeley’s city limits, you’ll find two highly-rated public golf courses at Boomerang Links featuring ample driving areas framed by native grass mounds reminiscent of the links of Scotland and Ireland and Highland Hills with tree lined fairways, rolling hills, and challenging greens. The Greeley Country Club private course highlights mature trees, manicured greens, tight fairways, and small targets from tee to green. The Eaton Country Club, about 15 minutes north of Greeley, offers a beautifully
