WELCOME TO THE 2021 ARTS PICNIC!
T
he 42nd Annual Arts Picnic is a Greeley tradition held in beautiful historic Lincoln Park in downtown Greeley, Colorado. COVID may have kept us from gathering in 2020, but it will not take 2021 from us! We look forward to another Arts Picnic and picking up where we left off. With some social distancing, adherence to state-sanctioned, and CDC guidelines to protect our guests, vendors, entertainers, and staff, the Arts Picnic will be back and in full swing. We are getting back to the roots of it being a “picnic” and encourage folks to bring lawn chairs and/or blankets to comfortably enjoy the entertainment and food court festivities. In 2019, over 150 artists/crafters and 20,000 “picnickers” from all over the United States attended this two-day event enjoying food booths, a beer garden, and live continuous entertainment on two stages. The Arts Picnic is a nationally known event with artists and crafters from all over the United States selling everything from pottery and paintings, soap to sculptures and gourmet food to garden art! Shoppers can grab a cool one in the beer garden or enjoy mouth-watering cuisine from around the world in the food court including Greek, Mexican, Middle Eastern and Italian, plus good old American BBQ. Some of the best Colorado talent will be featured on two stages throughout the weekend. The former Kids Creation Station will be a ‘Take and Create’ for 2021, allowing mini-Monets and pint-size Picassos to create masterpieces outside of the Arts Picnic this year. For those of you not able to join us for the celebration, please visit our online marketplace, artspicnic.com, to be linked to some of the vendors in attendance. So mark your calendars for the 42nd annual Arts Picnic July 24 and 25 in downtown Lincoln Park.

VENDOR SPOTLIGHT
RALPH ROOT (COLORADO WILDLIFE ART) is an award-winning artist, raised in Colorado and residing in Aurora. He started many years ago by painting animals on rocks and developed a method for painting on natural leaves. His leaves are all collected in Colorado. He also paints Landscapes with acrylic and oil paint. Much of his art comes from his love for animals as well as the Colorado Mountains. He also illustrates rock art sites from around the country. His art can be found in Museums and collections throughout the U.S., He will do commissions on request. His full Gallery can be viewed at ralph-root.pixels.com
FI RUST (FOCUS ON NATURE) was born and raised in Kent, England, where she first acquired a great love of nature. She moved to Southern California in 1979 and worked as an art director, graphic designer, and 3-D animation artist throughout the '80s. In early 1990, she moved to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where she began her career as a wildlife photographer. After a birthday trip to Rocky Mountain National Park in 1994, she moved to Boulder the following year and has lived in Colorado ever since. Her wildlife and nature images have been published in numerous nature magazines, including Audubon Magazine, Birder's World, National Wildlife, Nature Photographer, Nature's Best and WildBird. Her images have also been published in books and calendars and have been exhibited many times at The Wildlife Experience in Parker, and also at the Smithsonian. Fi has traveled throughout the United States since 1990, capturing special moments in nature for herself and to share with others, but her true photographic passion is for the wildlife of the Rocky Mountain region. Very often, our glimpses of wildlife are so fleeting that only through photographic images are we truly able to appreciate the beauty that nature has to offer.

STONECRAFT ARTS (JAMES & GEOFFREY): The sculpting duo of James Miller and Geoffrey Stolle have been creating esoteric garden sculpture in architectural concrete and bronze under the business name of Stonecraft Arts for over 20 years. Their designs reflect the gothic, baroque and neoclassical designs of renaissance Europe, but have a decidedly contemporary look to them as well. Images like gargoyles, grotesques, and the ever popular Greenman are recurring images in their repertoire. Although the designs are based on ancient archetypes, all of their designs are completely original, they do not sculpt replicas, and they are only available in a handful of stores in TX, NM, AZ, CA, and CO.
ART HAUS CERAMICS is our trade name but most people know us as Jared and Danyelle Butler. Making art is what we do. We are Studio artists living and working out of our home in Greeley, CO with Danyelle creating in clay and Jared in acrylics and spray paint. We love making art that enriches the daily life and rituals of people that collect our work.

PERFORMERS SPOTLIGHT
As diverse as America, RUSTY 44 brings bluegrass, blues, Americana, and anything else they feel like to the table. Their music is accentuated by church-bred harmonies and virtuosic instrumentalism. A sound born out of collaboration, they are sure to inspire and excite.
TUMBLEDOWN SHACK is a 5 piece band recreating the sounds of the Grateful Dead in northern Colorado. Established in 2019, the band continues to grow its catalog of music while cultivating a unique flavor of their own.
THE SHERWOOD PARK FLUTE ENSEMBLE, directed by Marcia Bohnenblust, is a cultural and educational organization dedicated to enriching the musical experiences of its audience and its membership. Members are currently teaching and retired music teachers, a nurse educator, an engineer, a hospital volunteer & a Material Inspector.
COWBOYS DEAD first formed in 2007 to explore the music of Marty Robbins, Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Jimmy Reed, Don Nix, Merle Haggard, New Riders, Rolling Stones, Peter Rowan and more...like the Grateful Dead was doing back in the late 60's, early 70's. With a passion for the sound of Dead in the early 70s, Cowboys Dead reaches deep into the the Dead's repertoire, playing great Pigpen era tunes such as Smokestack Lightning, Mr. Charlie, Alligator and It Hurts Me Too. becoming head of the printmaking department and coheading the drawing department. “An artist has to work, and I always loved to work. I am proud of my work,” Hartger said. “The city of Greeley and the university took great care of me.” During his tenure at UNC, Hartger created a series of 16 paintings and drawings for the university, called “Impressions of Campus.” The series is the first of its kind for UNC and commemorates the school’s more than 100 years of history. “When the rubber meets the road, your work needs to show people what you are,” Hartger said. “And I am a romantic. I am overly romantic and overly emotional.”

A
fter emigrating from Holland to the United States with his wife and firstborn, Seiger Hartger found it increasingly difficult to make a living as an artist. Harger, 72, was a working artist and teacher before emigrating in 1971. To help make ends meet in his family’s new home country, Hartger enlisted in the Army. Instead of issuing Hartger a weapon to wield, the Army assigned him as an illustrator, to document daily military life and create artistic works for military communications and publications. “Every headquarters has a visual aides department where they do illustrations for advertisements, briefings and books,” Hartger said. During his service, Hartger created drawings, watercolors, etchings, woodcuts and other types of artwork depicting various scenes of military combat, training and life. He also managed a creative team and was the director of the graphics school for the NCO Illustrators School at Lowry Air Force Base in Colorado. “We taught people from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard,” Hartgers explained. “Anyone who wanted to be an illustrator would have to come through my school.” In 1990, Hartger was asked to create artwork documenting the life of soldiers deployed to Operation Desert Shield in the Persian Gulf. “We visited all the combat units for two weeks, as many as we could find,” he said. “And then … we looked around and saw units doing their thing, and we documented it to our best ability.” Despite being in charge of illustrating life during combat, Hartger doesn’t like to talk about some of the tragedies and horror that he witnessed on the battlefield. “Don’t think that war is pretty. It’s not,” he said. “I make nice paintings about it, but I don’t want to talk about it.” After 24 years of service, Hartger retired from the Army in 1996 with the title of master sergeant. After leaving the Army, Hartgers moved to Greeley, where he earned his second bachelor’s degree as well as a master’s degree from the University of Northern Colorado. He then began teaching for his alma mater’s School of Art and Design, eventually working his way up to

Hartger specializes in photorealistic artwork using a variety of different mediums. The artist said he works in one type of medium for three to four months and then switches to a different one, which prevents him from getting bored or burned out. No matter what he’s using, Hartger loves them all. “On a flat piece of canvas, I create the illusion of three dimension. in to the paintings too.” One of Hartger’s pieces has been chosen as the backdrop and inspiration for the 2021 Greeley Arts Picnic poster. The work, interestingly enough, is a painting of the arts picnic itself. The watercolor piece features visitors pursuing artists’ booths while soft, billowy clouds hang overhead. In addition to watercolors, Hartger creates etchings, drawings and oil paintings. He is working with the city of Greeley for an exhibit at the Tointon Gallery at the Union Colony Civic Center. “We had him scheduled to show in 2020 and COVID interfered,” said Kim Snyder, the city’s public art coordinator. “The gallery has been closed since the start of all that and will not reopen until early 2022. Hartger’s exhibit will probably be scheduled for late spring 2022.” Hartger is eager to showcase his work at the Tointon and described the pieces as some of his best work. Hartger hopes to work with the state to document some Colorado’s most majestic and beautiful sites. “I want to do the same thing I did for Greeley for the state of Colorado, but I don’t know who to approach yet,” he said. “But I want to wait until my show at the Tointon is over, so they can see my work. That’s my next goal.” Until then, Hartger is keeping busy by visiting his grandchildren and taking numerous trips around the U.S. to capture the beauty of the country in his artwork. “America is so beautiful. Oh man, you just can’t believe it. I love America,” Hartger said. “You go to Texas, and they are different, but they are still Americans. They are not the same as the people from New York or Colorado or other states. And I love that difference between the people. PARK & RIDE Take the free shuttle provided by Greeley Evans Transit. The bus will stop at 1550 22nd Avenue, in front of the Heath Junior High Parking Lot, with plenty of shuttle parking available. (Wheelchair access!) You will be conveniently dropped off on 10th Avenue across the street from Lincoln Park where the festival takes place!
