said he moved because of high rent costs. The business, which is locally owned and operated, sells furniture. “We still sell quality mattresses and quality sofas and love seats and recliners,” Kessler said.

William R. (Bill) Myers Jr. April 7, 1928 - February 7, 2020

William R. (Bill) Myers Jr. died on 7 February, 2020, in Windsor. He was born in Corning, Arkansas, 7 April 1928, the youngest of nine children, to William R. and Emma J. (Walker) Myers. Seven brothers and sisters preceded him in death; he is survived by a sister, Alma Manning, of St. Louis. Bill and his parents moved to Cañon City in 1940, making him a longtime resident of the county. Bill married Wanda E. Schmidt, in May of 1949. She died in April of 1998. Their children are William C. Myers (Carol) and Cheryl J. Shannon (Richard); grandchildren include Jillian E. Myers (Donald Woosley), Lisa Shannon Nielsen (Trent), and Amy M. Shannon (J. T. Blake). He married

Violet Kennedy in August of 2014, and she died in February of 2017. Bill was a union machinist by trade; he retired from Colorado Fuel & Iron. Bill was a past commander of VFW Post 4061. He served his country at the end of World War II in the United States Navy aboard the USS Forest Royal and the USS Grand Canyon. He was honorably discharged from Navy active duty in 1948, as well as the Navy Reserves in 1956. He often reminisced about his Navy days and fondly recalled them as some of the best of his life. As he undertakes the final voyage, his family embraces the seafaring tradition and wishes him fair winds and a following sea. Private services will be held.

Eileen Gladys Oddo July 16, 1938 - February 2, 2020

Eileen Gladys Oddo, 81, passed away February 2, 2020 in Canon City. She was born July 16, 1938 to James and Beatrice (Holloway) Willmott in South Kingston, Rhode Island. She married Leonard F. Oddo, the love of her life in New Jersey and had two children. Eileen spent her working career in customer service, where she loved helping and interacting with people. After her retirement she moved to Canon City to be closer to her son's family. She is survived by her son and

daughter-in-law, Larry (Diane) Oddo, granddaughter Emily Oddo, all of Canon City, CO, granddaughter Melissa Oddo of Cocoa, FL; siblings Beatrice, Richard, Cheryl and Mary. She was predeceased by her parents, brother Kenneth Willmott, husband and son, Leonard J. Oddo. At her request, no services will be held. Louis Howard Cammel of Cañon City, Co passed away January 28, 2020 at his home at the age of 46. Louis was born May 21, 1976 in Colorado Springs, CO to Charles and Rosalie Cammel. Louis was an ordained minister and had officiated in a few of his friends weddings. Louis was a purple belt in Taekwondo. Louis loved his Raiders and the NY Yankees, enjoyed singing karaoke (16 Tons was his favorite). Louis enjoyed spending time with family and friends, and was truly loved by everyone. Louis is survived by his mother, Rosalie Cammel; stepfather, Richard Counce of Elliott, CO; brother, Charles Wayne Cammel, Rapid City, SD; grandmother, Martha

(Lee) Valentine of Cañon City; son, Jordan Cammel, Cañon City; daughters, Donovan Maestas, Pueblo, CO, LeeAnn Widick, Florence, CO, Autumn Watson, Sidney, NE; eight aunts and uncles, numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. Preceded in death by his dad Charles; youngest brother, Raymond; grandfather, Orland Woodson; grandfather and grandmother, Howard and Zelona Cammel; his aunt, Loretta and uncle, Robert (Bob) Frayser; his Aunt Dorthy June; and cousin, Dorothy Darlene. Louis will be missed by all who knew and loved him. There will be a Celebration of Life Feb. 22, 2020.

March 18, 1930 - January 18, 2020 James (Jim) Bennett, formerly of Canon City, passed away in St. Joseph, MO at the home of his daughter on January 18, 2020. He moved to Missouri in November of 2018 after living in Canon City for 19 years. James was born in Junction City, Kansas to John and Nettie (Whitehair)Bennett. He graduated from Junction City High School in 1948 and attended both K State and KU before enlisting in the USAF in 1951. He retired from the Air Force in 1975, He married Doris L. DeLauder on June 13, 1953. They had four children: Shelley (George) Kirschner, St. Joseph, MO; Gregory (Nicole Johnson), Santa Fe, NM; Brice (Karin Beij), Holderness, NH; and Leslie Ziaiefar (deceased).

He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years in 2004; his parents; sisters: Helen Woodruff, Detroit, MI; Ann Tipton, Canon City, CO; Hester Headen, Independence, MO; and brother Brice F. Bennett, Milford, MI; daughter Leslie of Overland Park, KS in 2007. Survivors include his three children; three grandsons: Keegan Bennett, Cody Kirschner, and Eli Ziaiefar; and great-granddaughter Kayla Melanson; as well as many nieces and nephews, including Philip (Toby)Tipton of Canon City, CO. Following discussions that began a year ago regarding the eventual prohibition of horseback riding on trails in Royal Gorge Park, the City of Cañon City is proposing a new 3.5-mile trail system for equestrian use. Parks Director Rex Brady laid out the plan during Wednesday’s general government meeting. The proposed trail would utilize an old road that leads to the communication towers on Fremont Peak and circle back to the campground where there is parking space for horse trailers. Brady said the trail, which could be completed in June and July, also could be open to pedestrians, but not bicycles because of the steep ups and downs. Mayor Ashley Smith said Fremont Adventure Recreation has raised and contributed $60,000 for trails at the Royal Gorge Park and the city has been matching funds when possible. “Without FAR, a lot of this wouldn’t be possible,” Brady said. “They were the catalyst behind it. It was something that I wanted to do for a long, long time, and FAR stepped in and they were the ones who really made this happen. I appreciate FAR so much for what they did and for the money they contributed and continue to contribute.” Smith said as a city, it makes sense to get behind an organization that is motivated and making things happen by offering funding and manpower. “The trail we are building for the horses at the Royal

I want us to be able to help, but I can’t be held to a solution if we are coming in late because we didn’t know that all of a sudden they don’t want us on the trails.” Steve Thomas, the trail builder hired by FAR and the city, said the size and flow of the trails are different for bicycles and horses because those for horses should be wider and not meander quite as much. Keeping horses on their specific trails would lead to less damage to pedestrian and bicycle trails. “I think there is a bit of an iced out situation happening, which is really unfair,” Leeman said. “I think it’s kind of a joke to offer us three miles when there are 10 or 11 miles for the hikers in that

park – I don’t see that as a fair compromise … I see that FAR has put more money into this, but that doesn’t; mean that horses can’t be out there, too.” Ashlee Sack, the coordinator of FAR, said the South Cañon Trail System is open to equestrians and Oil Well Flats also is a multi-use trail system. “This is not because we ‘dislike’ equestrian users, we don’t ‘dislike’ them, it doesn’t come as a place of dislike at all,” she said. “We are so happy to see them on the trails, it comes from a place of safety and enjoyment. … We are happy to share those trail systems outside of the Royal Gorge Park and do an even better job of accommodating those different uses.” There are six areas in Fremont County open to equestrians only, and Red Canyon Park would be a prime opportunity for equestrian groups to expand the trails there, Sack said. The city plans to propose an ordinance prohibiting “leading or riding upon any horse or any other animal capable of being ridden in any city park except in areas designated and posted specifically for such use” once the additional equestrian riding trail is created. Brady said he’s caught people with horses setting up barrels for barrel racing in the grass area of the ball diamond at Centennial Park, which would have caused significant damage. “Right now there is no ordinance that prohibits horseback riding on any of our trails or in any of our parks,” he said. “That needs to be addressed.”

Group names new executive director

Jessica Scott was selected to replace Judy Lohnes as the executive director of the Upper Arkansas Area Council of Governments upon Lohnes’ retirement in March. Scott, 48, officially joined the ranks at UAACOG on Jan. 29 and will learn the ropes directly from Lohnes, whose last day will be March 5. “I wanted to give back to the community, and I wanted to return to a service profession,” Scott said. “Public service has always been a passion of mine.” Scott was born in Pennsylvania and grew up in Buena Vista, but her husband’s family lives in Cañon City. She became a communications dispatcher for the Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office, which started a more than 20-year career in law enforcement. She went on to work for the Buena Vista Police Department and later was recruited by the Drug Enforcement Administration in Colorado Springs, working as an asset forfeiture contractor and moving through the DEA administrative ranks. She was a recognized leader in an agency of more than 10,000 employees, instrumental in writing Senate Appropriation testimony for Colorado, Montana, Texas, Utah and Wyoming. out,” said Jay Valdiserri, founder of Valdiserri Grocery Co. “There’s also a corporate company called Instacart, but they don’t cover outlying areas. They only cover Cañon City, Florence and Penrose.” The business delivers from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day and works with Wal-

mart, City Market, Safeway and Walgreens in Cañon City. They also deliver from the following Pueblo businesses: Sam’s Club, Target, Petco and PetSmart. The company, which began services Saturday, partnered with a phone app called Dumpling. “All the customers’ credit

The simple answer is “Yes, science can help by identifying the facts that surround a particular issue.” But even when people agree on the goals that need to be accomplished, there can be significant differences about how to proceed to achieve those goals. I suggest that “entropy” (commonly referred to as “disorder”) is a useful tool that can give us insight into how we can achieve a goal with minimal disruption to society as a whole. I’ll begin with a discussion (intended for non-scientists) of entropy as a concept from physics (thermodynamics). We’ll see how entropy can be applied to the complexities of modern society, and some simple ideas will arise to make that leap much easier. Finally, we’ll think through some examples of how entropy can be useful in real-life situations, such as designing a tax code or growing a business.
