December 20, 1944 - January 30, 2020
Jessie Mae Welch
November 5, 1923 - January 22, 2020
Jessie Mae Welch passed peacefully in her sleep on January 22, 2020 at the age of 96. She lived a full life. Born to Irish immigrants; Jesse and Maggie Mae (Cowan) Chandler entered the world on November 5, 1923 in Dennard, Arkansas. Six years later her parents and sister, Martha, moved to Salida, Colorado where she completed High School as an honor student with a scholarship to a Denver Business School. It was also in Salida she met her husband, Ulysses Michael Welch. The two soon married in Buena Vista, Colorado before he became an army soldier in the Philippines during WWII. During his absence, Jessie Mae worked at a Russell Stover candy store in Salida then moved to Canon City with her parents, where she gave birth to her first daughter, Colleen. Upon Michael's return to Jessie Mae after Army discharge and when he first met his two year old daughter, they settled in Canon City where they raised five children; Colleen, twins
David and Don, Cathy, and Danny. She is survived by Colleen Lewis of Centennial Colorado, David Welch of Boulder Colorado, and Danny Welch of Broomfield Colorado. She also is a beloved grandmother of ten grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren. Jessie Mae attended the First Baptist Church in Canon City, loved to play the piano and to garden and frequently visit her friends, neighbors and family. During her final years she spent time living with Don and his family and then spent time at the Mary Sandoe Assisted Living Home in Boulder until her death. She will be missed by all who knew her and loved her. Jessie Mae's family are all sure she has joined her beloved husband and soul mate, a daughter and son, two grandchildren, and her parents and sister in Heaven. Peggy A. Martin (Breece) September 23, 1951 - January 30, 2020
On Thursday January 30th, 2020 Peggy Ann Martin (Breece) amazing wife, mother, grandmother and friend passed away at the age of 68. Peggy was born September 23, 1951 to Dorothy Ann Breece (Hegler) & Alden Homer Breece in Pueblo, CO. Peggy is survived by her husband of 49 years, Mike Martin, daughters Jennifer Vernetti (Mike Vernetti) & Jamie Layton (Mark Layton) and three grandchildren Kara Vernetti, Izabell
Diaz & Conner Vernetti. Peggy adored her grandchildren and cherished time spent with them. Peggy also had a passion for genealogy & history. She would spend hours tracking families back as far as possible including those who came across on the May Flower. She was the caretaker for New Hope Cemetary in Wetmore, CO. She was also a member of the Colorado Territorial Daughters and the Slovenian Women's Union. Graveside services will be held in the spring.
Lance Lee McIntyre died in Cañon City, Colorado on January 30, 2020. He was born December 20, 1944, to Ernest Lee and Louise (Stilwell) McIntyre and grew up in central Texas. Lance attended the University of Texas, where he met his wife, Rosemary. They were married on September 14, 1968. Lance later earned a Master's Degree in Psychology from Western Washington University, then a Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of Oregon. Lance and Rosemary lived in Austin, TX; Galveston, TX; Bellingham, WA; Coleman, TX; and Ashland, OR before moving to Cañon City in 1985. Together they raised three children. Lance worked as a school psychologist for 28 years. Lance found joy in perceiving beauty, building structures, holding the hands of children, playing soccer, thinking, socializing, loving, working, and listening to music. He cared deeply for his family and friends, though his feelings were often not fully expressed. He was an avid reader and lifelong learner. Some
of his reading was simply for entertainment, but most was research to explore his worldview. Lance often wrote: publishing papers, sending letters to news editors, writing short stories about family history, and recording his thoughts and feelings. He enjoyed the outdoors and held fast to logic and justice. As he battled colon cancer, he continued to hike and ride the trails around Cañon City and Breckenridge, ride his spin bike and rower, and lift weights to stay fit. Lance was preceded in death by his wife, Rosemary, who died in 2011. He is survived by three children: Chris McIntyre (Cañon City, CO), Ryan McIntyre (Austin, TX), and Laura Rowe (Breckenridge, CO); 8 grandchildren (Ariana, Adam, Winter, Conor, Matthew and Gabe McIntyre; Zoey and Camden Rowe); and brother Buddy McIntyre (Fort Worth, TX). July 12, 1941 ~ January 19, 2020 Robert K Mulder went to be with the Lord, through the salvation and grace of Jesus Christ on January 19, 2020. He left his earthly family here which included: Tim and Timi Nees and Timi's children, Jason, Cara and Amara Williams, Chance and Lindsey Osborne, and Bill Osburn; Stan and Teri Rodriguez and their family, Ashley, Jenni, Zach and Joey; Josh and Tyler Wishart (husband and son to Tami who is waiting in heaven for Bob), his wonderful church family at Grandview Christian Church and his wife of 59 years, Linda. Bob always loved new adventures. At the age of 55 he left his full-time engineering career and purchased the Knotty
Pine Motel in Canon City, CO which they owned and operated until they were 65. During that 10 years and until the year he turned 78 he continued to do engineering part-time. At the age of 72 Bob had a major heart attack and at the age of 73 he decided it was time to purchase an RV and do some traveling and fishing. That was when the fun began. Many friends called Bob the Timex Man - He took a licking and kept on ticking. We will miss you Bob! The memorial service will be held at Grandview Christian Church, 3245 Grandview Avenue, Canon City, CO 81212 on Saturday, February 8, 2020 at 2pm.

Man granted new lease on life through wheelchair donation
Samuel ‘Spud’ Ketchum spent his career as a trucker, driving more than five million miles in 35 years, but because of significant health impairments, he’s been homebound the last 11 years. Thanks to the Center Toward Self-Reliance, Ketchum now has a way to leave his house with a heavyduty motorized wheelchair, a donation that was orchestrated by Ketchum’s brother, Kent Ketchum, and Joe Sims, an independent living specialist for CTSR. “This is a lifeline for me, it really is,” Ketchum said Friday when the power chair was presented to him at his home. “I want to get out and I want to be able to see the stars and the sun – I want to go to the duck park and do some fishing on the river.” He also needs to take care of some personal issues, such as going to the eye doc-
tor to get new glasses. “For the last two years, I’ve just been wanting to jump in the back of somebody’s pickup and just ride around town,” he said. “That’s what I’ve been wanting to do. Thanks to (Sims and his brother) I can do this stuff now – I can get out and about.” Ketchum, 63, a Cañon City native, has a colossal hernia and lymphedema (a longterm condition where excess fluid collects in tissues causing swelling) in his leg from a previous injury. He said his health isn’t well enough to undergo another hernia repair. Since he’s been in his house on South Third Street the last eight years, he’s only left three times, which was by ambulance. Before that, he lived in a trailer three years where he only left to go to a couple of funerals. “I want out of this house,” Ketchum said. “I want out bad.”

The last time Ketchum drove, Cañon City only had one roundabout, and he hasn’t seen any of the downtown improvements. “I haven’t been up Main Street in nine years,” he said. “The only way I’ve been able to see what it looks like is to Google it. This will be so nice.” His brother looks forward to taking him to the Owl for a hamburger and to his shop so they can work on motorcycles together. “I don’t care if it’s sitting out here in my yard eating a sandwich – a picnic in my own yard – just to be outside,” Ketchum said. “I’ve always been an outdoor guy my whole life. To turn around and be stuck in a house, it’s been heck, I’ll tell ya. Both Cañon City houses are part of Pueblo’s Oxford House Chapter 10,

Marlon Ashford, an outreach worker for Oxford House, Inc., said once the house is full, the residents are trained to be self-sufficient. “Unfortunately, with addiction, it’s always going to be there,” he said. “But it’s a blessing because there will always be someone there to help. … This is the perfect environment because you have people to lean on and everyone understands.” He said for parents who don’t have custody of their children, living at an Oxford House helps men and women to become stable so they can re-establish relation-
ships and potentially get their children back. “It also helps those who are living here who don’t have children because it brings them to a greater level of maturity,” he said. “Also, the interaction helps prepare them for when they do have children, and it gives them a sense of responsibility and family.” The houses are rented and they are completely run by the residents who share the cost of rent, utilities and food. Everyone must pull his or her own weight, including serving in an elected office within the home, which is run democratically. Residents have weekly house meetings and hold one another accountable. Moore said her neighbors have welcomed the women
in the house with open arms. “Every time we see each other it’s only joy and gratitude,” she said. “My son plays with their kids all the time.” Now clean for 119 days, Moore has big plans for her future moving forward including finishing school and pursuing a career in criminal justice. Senior Mini College will be held March 23-27 at the Fremont Campus of Pueblo Community College. Mini College is a non-credit learning experience geared towards senior citizens, with classes presented by local experts, artists and other accomplished individuals. Topics are varied and are designed for personal growth and life-long learning. Classes will include: arts & crafts, local history, cooking, health and wellness, financial planning, writing, and many others. There are no tests, grades or credits. Special events include; General resource day on March 24: information tables from local businesses, organizations and service providers; Author’s Day on March 25: Local authors will have tables set up in the Fremont Campus corridors; Health Resource Day on March 26: Visit with representatives of local organizations and businesses catering to your health and wellness needs. While Senior Mini College is intended for senior citizens, adults of all ages are welcome. The course schedule will be printed in the Shopper February 18th.
