Helen McCarter January 10, 1934 ~ January 25, 2020 Helen McCarter, passed away peacefully at her home, January 25, 2020. Born January 10, 1934 in Darien, Missouri to Dale and Alta (White) Dunham, then spending her younger childhood, in St. Louis, MO. After graduating from Salem Missouri High School, she married Donald G. McCarter Sr. "Mac", on October 18, 1952. They sang in a gospel quartet, with her sister Myra and husband Raymond. Also, they enjoyed square dancing, a sight surely to behold, given the difference in their heights. They spent several seasons at the logging camp, of Lenado, near Aspen, CO, with their son, Glenn. Upon returning to Salem, Mac and Helen built two houses, one in town, the second on their farmland, in Doss, MO., raising numerous crops and livestock. Later moving with their four children, to Canon City, CO. Mac and Helen owned and operated Mac's Music Mart from 1968 to 1977. Helen was employed at Developmental Opportunities (now known as Starpoint), for 15 years; served as a PTA president of Washington School; and she and Mac were members of the local CB club. Musical talent runs in the family. She loved listening to her sons' rendition of the song, "Southern Cross", at holiday gatherings; cooked great home-style meals; appreciated the beauty of Colorado's mountains, spending many happy times, at
the family get-away, in Else. She enjoyed reading, watching old westerns and soap operas, crocheting, sewing, oil painting, and ceramics; her green thumb was evident with her abundant houseplants. She loved her furry companions, keeping her company in her later years. Helen is survived by children, Glenn (Kristy) McCarter of Canon City, Dan (Lisa) McCarter of Florence, Dale (Lolly) McCarter of Canon City, and Jacob McCarter of Canon City; grandchildren, Megan McCarter of Canon City, Jeremy Dundore of CA, Jordan Dennis of CA, Alexis (Andrew) Weaver of Florence, Ethan (Katelyn) McCarter of Canon City; Tyrell, Beau, Shyann of Canon City; great-grandchildren, Lorelai and Lincoln Weaver; sister, Myra Schafer of Cuba, MO. Numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Don "Mac" McCarter in February 2005, after 53 years of marriage; and daughter, Penny McCarter, in June 2007. Joyce Lynna Trenhaile December 21, 1958 ~ January 23, 2020 Joyce Lynna Trenhaile of Cañon City, CO passed away on January 23, 2020 at age 61 in Pueblo, CO after battling lung cancer for over a year. She will be missed by her children, LaDonna (Virgil) Green, Michelle Trenhaile and Charles (Jennifer) Trenhaile; 16 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; her lifetime love Michael Trenhaile; four siblings; along with numerous nieces and nephews,

Drew Browning Cronk February 13, 1947 ~ January 28, 2020 Drew Browning Cronk passed away on January 28, 2020, after a hard-fought battle with recurring cancer. He was born in Canon City on February 13, 1947, to A.J. and Josephine (Browning) Cronk. Drew attended Canon City schools and graduated from Canon City High in 1965. On February 17, 1968, he married Patricia Diane Berta, the love of his life, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Canon City. Together they raised two children. Drew was a beloved husband, a cherished dad, an adored Papa, a sweet brother, and a good friend. Drew's life was tough at times but also very blessed. He was a proud veteran, serving in the Army in Vietnam. He worked hard, from the Royal Gorge Bridge in high school to Berta Brothers Transportation to the Department of Corrections, and instilled that ethic in his kids. He was a terrific athlete who loved watching sports:
football, baseball, and golf. He especially loved playing a round at Shadow Hills with his favorite partners: his dad, his kids, or his grandson. Drew's sense of humor was the best, and his family will continue to laugh at his funny stories. Drew will be missed by his wife Pat and their kids and grandkids: Drew Michael & Wendy Cronk of Tucson, Arizona, and their children Ashtyn (Cam) and Josh; and Kristen & Greg Johnson and their daughters Presley and Joie of Pueblo West. Elnor Neva Chambers June 29, 1920 ~ January 12, 2020 Elnor Neva Chambers was born June 29, 1920 to Earnest and Catheryn (Sunday) Calkins in Norton, KS. She was the youngest of their seven children. She lived on a farm with her family until 1936, when the drought during the Dust Bowl caused it to be sold. The family then moved to Canon City, CO, where Elnor attended high school. Throughout her life starting at a very early age, Elnor gained fame with her lovely and powerful singing voice. She never lost this gift, and enjoyed singing with her sisters in church choirs, and musical productions In 1938 she married Harry Edwin Chambers. In 1950, with her husband and young son, Robert, she moved to Delta, CO, and a short time later, the family moved to Montrose. Elnor and Robert eventually moved to
Denver, where she continued to live for many years. She supported her son and herself as a waitress and bartender. In the 1970's Elnor moved back to Canon City where she spent the next four decades of her life. Elnor enjoyed gardening and created beautiful flower displays on the property surrounding her home. She moved to Eckert, CO in 2014 to be close to family support. Elnor passed away January 12, 2020 after a short illness. She is survived by her son, Robert; daughter-in-law, Joan; grandson, Robert Jr., granddaughter, Genelle Joseph; great-grandson, Evan Chambers and great-granddaughter, Rachel Joseph; and sister, Dorothy Burd of Orleans, NE, age 104. Ronnie Kimmell It is with great sadness that the family of Ronnie Kimmell announces his passing on January 20, 2020 at the age of 72. Ron will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 52 years, Sheila and his daughters, Sherry (Zane) Odegard and Stacy (Kevin) Pitts and father Jim. Ron will also be fondly remembered by his 4 grandsons, Trevor, Alex, Isaak and Jakob, by his brothers Greg (Carla) Kimmell and Rodney (Carol) Kimmell and his sister Karen Kimmell. Ron was predeceased by his son Ricky, daughter Lisa, brothers Bobby and Brian, and mother Rose. Born in Oregon, Ron spent most of his years in Montana before relocating to Colorado in 1989. Ron proudly served in the Marine Corps before settling into a career surrounding real estate to include building, appraising and more. As he transitioned into semi-retirement he enjoyed building, remodeling and working on cars with his dear friends, Alan, Rob and Larry as well as other family members. He was honor bound to uphold his Semper Fi pledge, always faithful and always loyal, in all aspects of his life. Ron will always be best
remembered for having a strong personal and work ethic, driven by an unwavering moral compass, and doing the right thing in all of his endeavors. Ron was eternally grateful for the outpouring of love and support, he and our family received, from the communities surrounding Billings, MT and Casper, WY in the loss of his daughter, Lisa Marie Kimmell. October 13, 1932 ~ January 28, 2020 Donna passed away January 28, 2020 at Skyline Ridge Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Canon City, CO. Donna was born October 13, 1932 in Salida, CO to Elmer and Agnes Burkard Squire of Hillside, CO. She and her sister, Dianne, had a very happy childhood on the family ranch at Hillside, CO. Donna married her high school sweetheart, Marvin Garrett. After 47 years of marriage, they divorced, and she wed Samuel Ted Thomas. Preceding Donna in death are both husbands, her sister, both parents, and her grandson Scott. Donna is survived by Vicki (Eddie) Graves of Boise, ID, Valori (Julius) Romero of Brush, CO, Marvin Paul Garrett (Laurel) of Cotopaxi, CO and Andrea (Brian) Ray of Pueblo, CO and stepdaughter Debra Hood of Canon City, CO. She enjoyed listening to classical music, attending operas in Santa Fe, NM, flowers especially wildflowers, and going to the Owl for a beer and sandwich with family and friends. She was also a talented watercolor artist. The family would like to thank Skyline Ridge Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and Sangre De Cristo Hospice for their love, compassion and excellent care in Donna's last few days. A celebration of her life will be held Friday, January 31, 2020, 11:00AM at Christ Episcopal Church. A short reception will follow. Jim Moore in race for District 1 seat By Carie Canterbury The Daily Record
Jim Moore has no intention of becoming a “career politician,” but he is vying for the Fremont County Commissioner District 1 seat, which will be vacated by Commissioner Tim Payne after his retirement January 2021. Moore said he isn’t looking for a second career but simply a way to “give back.” Moore, 53, has worked for the Colorado Department of Corrections in various roles for 22 years. He currently is the Administrative Services Manager at the Fremont Correctional Facility. “I’ve spent my adult life as a servant leader,” he said. “As I started to think about this commissioner position, I thought this really is a way
Jim Moore for me to continue to give back to my community.” Moore has never held a public office, but he feels he has the skills and experience to serve the residents of Fremont County. “Through the Department of Corrections, I’ve been
responsible for some really large budgets; I’ve been responsible for a little over a million-dollar budget,” he said. “I’ve had experience working with the police department and the district attorney’s office, so I have that collaborative experience.” Also through his work for DOC, he has learned how to listen and understand issues and then represent those moving forward to find equitable solutions, he said. “It really is about the people of my district,” he said. “I believe I have the ability to listen and represent that opinion.” Some of the top issues Moore feels he will face as a commissioner are the growing drug problem, homeless-
ness and keeping the local economy moving. “Those three issues are really intertwined,” he said. He’d also like to see more industrial or manufacturing type jobs that could help move people experiencing homelessness into a stable workforce. Another impetus behind Moore’s decision to run for county commissioner is Zephyr Mineral’s proposed gold mine. “I saw a lot of people beginning to rally around this gold mine, and I knew that Commissioner Payne was not going to run again, so I saw this as an opportunity to get more involved in solutions for the gold mine,” he said. “If there was a single topic, that would be it.”
Moore lives in Dawson Ranch, but he said at this point he needs to learn more about the mine before taking a formal stand for or against it. “From the surface, it doesn’t look like a good idea,” he said. “What are their long-term plans? What’s their traffic plan? What’s the aesthetic impact that it’s going to have? (I want to be) part of – whether it’s a positive or a negative – learning more about that and then representing the community in the direction the community wants to go.” Moore is a staunch supporter of the Second Amendment, and in his free time, he enjoys building aspen log furniture and flyfishing. He moved to Penrose from
Westcliffe in 2001 and then in 2010 moved to Cañon City with his wife, Cheryl Moore. He has a son and daughterin-law who live in La Veta. After moving to Fremont County, he was active with youth athletics and the 4-H program for several years. Through his job with DOC, he helped to rejuvenate the community Trunk or Treat event and organized it for the next nine years. Moving forward, Moore plans to host town hall forums so that he can learn more about the issues the public would like to see addressed. Also running for the seat is former State Senate President Kevin Grantham. Both candidates are running as Republicans.

Bella Capelli’s boutique officially has a new owner. Elsa Tursick became the new owner of the boutique inside Bella Capelli on Jan. 1 after three years of being mentored by owner Jennifer Malespini. Malespini, a hairstylist who has been a staple of Main Street for years, said Tursick is more than capable of handling the new responsibility on many levels. During the store’s 20 years of growth, Malespini met Tursick as a client. She has been styling Tursick’s hair since she was 13 years old. Three years ago, Malespini asked if Tursick would like to start working with her, focusing on the boutique in Bella Capelli. COFosterandAdopt.org Fremont County Department of Human Services is always looking for foster families. There are currently 90 children in care in Fremont County alone. 30 of these children are placed out of the community due to a shortage of foster families. If you would like to know more about what you can do to keep our kids in our community, please come to an informational meeting. They are held the 3rd Monday of every month from 5-6 at Fremont County DHS.
