Myron "Smitty" Smith December 21, 1935 - January 13, 2020

On Monday, January 13, 2020, Myron "Smitty" Smith, Sr., loving husband, father of four children, grandfather of 12, and great-grandfather of 26, passed away at the age of 84. Smitty was born on December 21, 1935, in Clarkson, Nebraska, to Benjamin Smith and Marie Smith. A printer by trade, Smitty was a well-respected business man in Fremont County, living most of his life in Florence and Cañon City. On June 7, 1956, Smitty married Antionette Sabatino, of Coal Creek, Colorado. Together they raised their four children, Frank, Kathy, Julie, and Susie. Smitty, Antoinette, and their four children are all graduates of Florence High School. In 1970, Smitty and Antoinette bought Master Printers. They moved to Cañon City in 1980. Smitty was selected Chamber of Commerce Member of the Month countless times. Smitty was selected as the Chamber's

Distinguished Citizen of the Year in 2005. He has served on many advisory and community service boards in Fremont County such as the Cañon City Chamber of Commerce board, Fremont County Airport Advisory board, PCC Fremont Campus Advisory board, Fundraising committee for the Museum of Colorado Prisons, just to name a few. Smitty served as a County Commissioner, a Florence City Councilman, a volunteer on the Florence Fire Department, and as an Executive Director for Fremont Economic Development Corporation. Smitty was a Blue and Orange committed Denver Broncos fan but his favorite colors were the Red, White, and Blue of our American flag. Service will be held Saturday January 18, 2020 at 10 am at the First United Methodist Church located at 801 Main Street, Cañon City. Reception to follow.

Roland E. Lain passed away at Memorial North in Colorado Springs on January 8, 2020. He was born in Monte Vista on November15, 1966 to Geraldine (Amer) and John Lain. Roland married the love of his life Lorna Swift on November 24 1992. Roland loved hunting, fishing, and spending time with his family and harassing his grandkids mostly. He worked on trucks with his brother as a hobby, loved cutting and hauling fire wood and spending time with his best friend Matilda.

My love, Terry Joe Vondra, fought to take his last breath January 10, 2020. He became sick in 2004 and discovered on the path that he was developing lung issues that progressively worsened over time. He fought a long brave battle and would have stayed with us if he could. He lived and loved hard during his time on this earth and was adored by many. We cherish every day we had with him. The void will not be easy to fill for any that knew him. He will be missed dearly. Terry was born in Canon City, Colorado to Joseph Alexander Vondra and Betty Jo Stevens. He attended school in Canon and graduated Canon City High School in the class of 1968. A time of turbulence and excitement, when long hair was taboo and the Vietnam War was at its peak. He attended college for a time and shortly after was drafted into the Army. Terry served in Vietnam from 1970-1971 as Army AUS UNASGB, SP4-E4, HQ 2nd BDE, 25th Infantry Division, the Electric Strawberry Company. Serving his country he did over 70 helicopter trips in and out of the jungle, surrounded by war and Agent Orange. He received the Purple Heart for his service among other honors before the end of his tour. He didn't talk much about those times and in that era, when our boys came home, they were made to feel less than welcome. We changed that for him as we became his source of home, love, and comfort. After the war he returned to Canon until he was given the chance to go to Alaska to work construction with his Uncle Lewis (dad number 2). Terry worked there for 30 years and was known for his excavation skills. His family owned Browns Hill Quarry where he worked as a 302 Operating Engineer. He made many friends in Alaska as well. It was in North Pole where he met and married his wife Debra J. Faultner, the love of his life, through thick and thin to the very end, hand in hand. We both had been married previously and with our children, Jason Allen (Terrys) and Kimberlee Jasmine (Debs) we became a new family. Dylan Joseph was born shortly after to us all and then we were five. Life was

good. We moved back to Canon in 2006 because he wanted to retire and return to his home. He was a simple man that enjoyed the simple things, a ride on his Harley, a comfy chair, some good food, along with a good basketball or football game with his family and friends. Terry is survived by myself, his wife, Debra; his children and their loves, Jason Allen Vondra (Vanessa), Kimberlee Jasmine Lipari (Phil), Dylan Joseph Vondra (Cassidy); grandchildren, Joseph and Kiana Vondra, Zada and Marcus Lipari; his mother Betty Joe Fixman; sister, Sheri Holloway (Jerry); his nephew Troy and nieces Dawn and Shauna; mother-in-law, Arlene Langworthy; brother-in-law, Kenneth Faultner (Virgie), sister-in-law, Collette Carrol (Joe); nephews, Caleb (Rachel), Ryan, Boden, and Jaden, nieces, McKenna (Trevor); aunts, Carol Vondra (Lewis), and Mary Flack (Frank); many family (Vondra, Stevens, Santilli, McDowell, Harding, Eckels, Bush) and a world full of dear friends, both living and passed on to the other side that greeted him on his continuing adventure. We will be having a gathering and celebration of life of family and friends to raise a glass and make his ears burn on Saturday, January 18, 2020 at 4 p.m. at one of his favorite hang outs, the Owl, at 626 Main Street, Canon City, Colorado. We will have another gathering in North Pole, Alaska this summer to celebrate his life with family and friends there. Please bring any memories or pictures you would like to share with his family. He will have a place in the VA section of the Mountain Vale Cemetery in Canon City, Colorado that we will finalize in a couple of months as it takes a little while for the VA to complete the process. I hope you will utilize it to visit with him when the need arises. Please let me know if you would like to be present at that ceremony and I will get you the dates as soon as I have them. James Stanley Provenzano April 15, 1936 - January 10, 2020

James Stanley Provenzano, prominent resident and Florence businessman, passed away on January 10, 2020, in Canon City at the age of 83. Jim is survived by his wife, Sally Provenzano; daughters Dana (Pace) Rotramel, Cynthia Provenzano, Laura (Ron Smith) Provenzano; grandsons Tyler (Kristin Zerr) Eshnaur, Austin Rotramel, Braden Rotramel; great-grandson Giovanni Eshnaur Zerr; his sister Rose (Tom) Falgien; and nephew Tom (Cynthia Wieme) Falgien. He is preceded in death by his parents. Jim was born April 15, 1936, to Settimio "Jim the Tailor" Provenzano and Josephine Senatore Provenzano in Canon City. He grew up in Florence and graduated from Florence High School in 1954. He graduated from Notre Dame in 1958 with a degree in business administration. He married Sally Henderson in 1961 in Sacramento, California. In California, Jim worked for the Broadway Department Stores, on the Titan Missile on Beale Air Force Base, and as an Allstate insurance investigator. In 1970, he moved his young family to Florence purchasing the family business, Jim's Clothing. Upon his return to Florence, he served as president of the Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of the Florence Lions Club, the Fremont County Economic Development board, and the Fremont RE-2 school board. He helped supervise the construction of the Fremont County administration building in Canon City. A great

joy in his life was his time with the Red Brick Players performing in The Fireman's Flame as a villain, directing the comedy Li'l Abner and directing melodramas. Jim worked with the exploratory committee to bring the ADX Federal Prison to Florence. Jim loved to laugh and tell jokes. He could be easily found by following the sound of his laughter. In his later years, Jim enjoyed traveling with Sally, his family, and his friends. In 1996, Jim and Sally established Proven Choice Travel, sending clients on fabulous trips around the world. He helped others, especially youth, with anonymous gifts, scholarships, clothing, and shoes. He had a generous heart, helping fundraise for Channel 8 PBS, sponsoring a winning Little League team, and supporting other local organizations. He was especially proud that the Provenzano family had been in business on Florence's Main Street for 102 years, first as Jim the Tailor, then Jim's Clothing, and later Proven Choice Travel. Irene J. Atencio

October 5, 1924 ~ January 10, 2020

Irene J. Atencio, 95, went to be with her Lord on the evening of Friday, January 10, 2020. She passed peacefully at her home surrounded by family and friends. She was born in Calcite, CO to Tony and Mary Maestas on October 5, 1924. She married Ralph Atencio on April 26, 1942. They moved to Canon City, added on to a two room house and raised their eight children. She had many occupations but first and foremost she was a caregiver to all that crossed her path. She was a homemaker, our dad's bookkeeper and she worked for the New Method Laundry over 25 years. Her passion was her husband, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. She was a breast cancer survivor and a member of St. Michael Church. She enjoyed yard work or maybe she just hated weeds. Either way she liked being outside. She also enjoyed cooking for others. There was always good food to eat and fresh tortillas at the table. She could always make you smile but mostly she cared for all of us and kept us in her

prayers every day. She is survived by her children, Ken (Sandy), Lloyd (Vangie), Donald (Cinda), Jerry, Ron (Debbie); daughter-in-law, Debbie (Richard) Atencio; brother, William Maestas; brother-in-law, Chuck (Rachel) Atencio; 53 grandchildren; 67 great-grandchildren; and 15 great-greatgrandchildren; along with numerous extended family and close friends, Rhoda Brady and Monica Barnes. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; four sisters and two brothers; three children, Fancis Lynnette, Johnny, Richard; and three grandchildren. Tahrah Marie Wilder March 19, 1982 ~ January 11, 2020

On Saturday January 11, 2020 Tahrah Marie Wilder (Fabian), loving wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, niece, and cousin, passed away unexpectedly at the age of 37 in Canon City, Colorado. Tahrah was born March 19, 1982 in Leadville, CO to Robert Fabian and Holly Sebestyen. On July 20, 2002 she married her high school sweetheart William "Billy" Wilder. Together Tahrah and Billy raised their two boys Wyatt (age 17) and Jake (age 16) in Canon City surrounded by family and friends. Tahrah was happiest when she was with her husband, two boys, and all her furry friends (which included a cow). She spent most of her time with family and friends, enjoying camping trips, BBQs, birthday celebrations, holidays, and any other reason that would cause everyone to get together. Her most favorite hobbies included hunting with her husband and kids, taking care of her animals, rescuing stray or injured animals, and checking in with all of whom she knew because she worried

more about others than herself. In 2006 Tahrah graduated from the academy to work for the Colorado Department of Corrections. Her first assignment with CDOC was at Colorado Women's Facility, CSP, and CCF. She recently pursued her passion and graduated from Paul Mitchell Academy and received a state license for cosmetology. She is survived by her husband, William Wilder; sons, Wyatt and Jake Wilder; father, Robert Fabian, mother Holly Sebestyen; sisters, Steffanie Ontiveros and Rhiannon Copper; along with many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her little sister, Amber Fabian; grandparents, Leonard and Rita Fabian, Dale and Robin Ferrin; aunt, Becky Sheile; and cousin, Tracy Unruh. Bertha M. Holiman

April 12, 1928 - December 16, 2019 Bertha May Holiman, née Johnson and known as Bert, died on December 16thin Kailua-Kona, HI where she was a resident. She was 91. Born and raised in Cañon City, CO, she was the daughter of Harry A. and Bertha May (Bennett) Johnson, both of Cañon City. She graduated from Cañon City High School in 1946, and married, in 1951, Claude Edward "Eddie" Holiman, also of Cañon City, then moved to the Denver area and had two children. (Eddie Holiman was the founder and proprietor of Plateau Supply Company in Denver.). An accomplished needle worker, she and a partner, Betty Briggs, opened in 1971 The Ball O'Yarn, a needlework shop in Littleton, CO, which they ran together for over a decade. She continued to knit, do needlepoint and make quilts to the end of her life. Bert was a world traveler, often with the Ports of Call travel club, and had visited most of the countries in the world, many more than

once. A lover of classical music, especially opera, she also enjoyed films, books, wine and conversation. Over the years in the Denver area, she lived in Littleton and Cherry Creek. In 2005 Bert moved to Hawaii, a place she deeply loved. She died with her beloved dog, Toby, in her lap, both of her children at her side, listening to Schubert's Trout Quintet (a favorite) and in no pain. She will be buried at sea in Hawaii on January 19, 2020. Bert is survived by her son, Cleg T. Holiman of Holualoa, Hawaii, her daughter, Shauna Holiman and son-in-law Robert H. Hackney of New Preston, CT and New York City, her brother, Harry B. "Benny" Johnson of Cañon City, CO and Sun City West, AZ, two nieces, Wanda Calhoon and Tessa Johnson, both of Greeley, CO and Toby, her King Charles Spaniel. Her husband predeceased her in 1994. She was known and loved by many and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Commissioners recognize Michael Cox

During the first Fremont County Board of Commissioners meeting of the decade, Michael Cox was recognized for his work as the county’s building official. When Cox was asked to stand up during Tuesday’s meeting, attendees clapped, patted him on the back and gave him a standing ovation. Commissioner Debbie Bell read a service recognition resolution for Cox while he was standing. “(He) has been a loyal and valued employee of Fremont County from February 16 of 1999 until January 23 of 2020, earning much respect and admiration for his extraordinary commitment to the protection of lives and the safety of citizens of Fremont County through interpretation and enforcement of building codes, building permitting and inspection services as well as general guidance to contractors and citizens throughout unincorporated Fremont County,” Bell read. Cox was described as an expert who is dedicated and skillful and who has a wonderful sense of humor. “I can’t begin to thank you for all of the work that you have done, service you have provided,” Bell said to Cox after she finished reading the resolution. “You trained your people so well. They are

It worked saving the community hundreds of thousands of dollars.” Michael Murray was also involved with other aspects of the property. “When the St. Mary’s classroom was built he was involved in every aspect and spent countless hours welding steel sections together that became the roof,” John

He was ordained as a priest in 1981 at The Holy Cross Abbey. “His first assignment was at Sacred Heart of Jesus Par-

After three years he returned to southern Colorado and was appointed pastor of St. Benedict’s Parish in Florence where he served for 14 years,” John Murray said. “During those years he also was the administrator of the Abbey as they worked to begin the process of closing.” In 1973, he was elected president of the Cañon City Chamber of Commerce, according to a Daily Record article from June 13, 1981. “(He) was the first Benedictine monk ever named to such a post in the U.S.,” the article read. Michael Murray is also survived by his sister, Beverly Bennett, and numerous nieces and nephews. Jesse Perez presided at his vespers service on Dec. 19. Bishop Stephen Berg of the Diocese of Pueblo celebrated his funeral Mass on Dec. 20. The service and funeral were both held at St Michael’s Catholic Church in Cañon City.
