Barbara Louise Gribben June 15, 1929 - November 21, 2019

Barbara Louise Gribben, 90, passed away November 21, 2019. She was born June 17, 1929 to John and Julia (Gould) Mercure in Clayton, NM. Her family later settled in Alamosa, CO. Barbara attended Adams State University graduating in 1950. It was there she met the love of her life, Tom Gribben, whom she married June 15, 1949. Their journey together lasted 69 years. Barbara earned a Bachelor's and a Master's Degree in Education. Barbara and Tom lived in Pagosa Springs, CO, and later moved to Florence, CO, which became their forever home. Barbara took her first teaching job in Coal Creek, CO then taught 2 nd grade for over 35 years at Fremont Elementary school in Florence. She loved teaching and her students, even after retirement she continued to substitute teach until she was 83 years old. She enjoyed baking, painting, traveling, and spending time with her family and friends. Barbara was an active member of the community and belonged to St. Benedict's Parish, Alpha Delta Kappa Tau, Beta Sigma Phi, Ladies of Mary, and the Elks Club. She is survived by her children: Thomas (Lois) Gribben of Pueblo, Janet (Richard) Fischer of Colorado Springs; grandchildren, Scott,

Stacie (Scottie), Shannah, Jessi (Auggi), Bobby, Kinsey; great-grandchildren, Jake, Olivia, and Declan. Brother, Wayne Mercure; in-laws, Betty Jean Buehler, Jim Gribben, Nancy (Dick) Stanton, Charlene (Ray) Voelker, Robert (Jeannie) Erickson, and several nieces & nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Tom; her parents, daughter Kathryn, and son John. A mass will be celebrated at 10:00 A.M, Friday, Dec. 6 th at St. Benedicts Catholic Church in Florence with a reception to follow at the Elks Club. Gloria Alleen Clark, long-time resident of Canon City, Colorado passed away in her home on December 1, 2019. Always in good health, Alleen, as she was known to her friends, suffered a stroke the day before Thanksgiving. Her daughter Gloria (Fred), grandson Steve, and son Lloyd Weldon Jr. were in attendance and stayed with her during the last days of her 94 years of healthy, happy life. A life shared with her late husband, Lloyd W. Clark. December 3 of this same year they would have celebrated 75 years of marriage. Lloyd went to be with the Lord in May 2013. Alleen was born to Beulah and Stark Reynolds on March 24, 1925 in Waco, Texas. She is survived by her younger sister Amelia Hanson, of Dallas, Texas. One of five children, she helped to raise her younger sister and contributed to the family finances. Alleen married Lloyd Clark in 1944 in Lubbock, Texas while Lloyd was on Christmas leave from the Air Force. They moved to Canon City in 1953 and began growing apples in North Canon's Orchard Park. Alleen worked in the orchards and maintained a household caring for her three children. Later on, Alleen became an in-home day care provider for children ranging from infancy to school age. Alleen was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church in Canon City, where she was a long term,

devoted choir member. Alleen will be remembered as a kind person who always had a welcoming smile for others. She was someone who supported her friends. She made her home open to friends of her children and had a well-stocked refrigerator for them. She was a loyal Tiger booster and always willing to haul supporters of Tiger athletic teams to games. She loved to fish Blue Mesa Reservoir and is remembered for her canned Salmon. She was preceded in death by her son, Terry Wynn in 2016, and granddaughters, Stephanie Marie Stultz, in 1967 and Samantha Clark in 2012. She will be missed by her family and friends including four grandchildren, John (Karen), Jeff (Sue), and Steve Stultz, and Matthew (Sarah) Clark; eight great-grandchildren, Adrianne (Derick) Shong, Keith, and Matt Freeborn, Grant, Luke, and Davin Stultz, Chloe and Matt Clark Jr. Her great-great grandson, Brantley Espinosa adds to the mix and will carry her legacy forward. Appreciation to Sangre De Christo Hospice group. You were wonderful. Donations can be made in her honor to the Boys and Girls Club in Canon City. Services have been entrusted to Holt Funeral Home. James C. "Jim" Madone passed away on November 27th, 2019 in Denver, CO. He was born June 18th, 1947 in Canon City, CO, to Rocco and Rebalene (Goodale) Madone. He was the oldest of five children. He grew up in Canon City and graduated from Canon City High School in 1965. In 1967, he enlisted in the Army National Guard and proudly served for over 25 years, retiring as a First Sergeant. At a young age Jim's father taught the brick trade to all four of his sons. Using this skill, Jim worked as a brick mason into the early 80's. After this, he began working at the Dorchester coal mine as a Fireman. Jim was a highly talented stone mason, so when the mine closed, Jim returned to stone masonry. For his last masonry project, Jim laid many tons of stone on Micky and Janey Bonham's home in Beulah, CO. This several year project allowed Jim and the Bonham's to become family. Jim was also very talented in needle point, and made beautiful pieces for his family and friends. He loved to feed the animals that

lived around his home, and especially loved the hummingbirds. Jim lived in Beulah for the last 25 years, and was fondly known as "The Old Goat." He is survived by his wife, Sheri of Beulah, children Jeff Madone of Canon City, Jamie Madone of Pueblo, CO, grandchildren; Danika Cupp, Dakota (Caitlyn) Cupp, Atlanta Madone, Hali Madone, Zane Madone and Mason Madone, two great grandchildren; his brother, David Madone of Canon City, and a sister, Patti Madone of Colorado Springs, CO, as well as numerous nieces and nephews who will miss him greatly. He was preceded in death by his brothers, John (Shae) Madone and Rod (Beth) Madone. Memorial Mass, 10:00 a.m. Friday, December 6, 2019, St. Michael Catholic Church, Reverend Jesse Perez officiating. Harmless prank on Main Street changed life of future NFL star By Brooke Johnson The Daily Record

On a cool October night in 1945, with the excitement of Halloween in the air, a group of teenage boys decided to play a simple prank. Locating a bicycle rack, by the First National Bank on Main Street, the boys decided that it would be funny to remove it from its post and place it in the middle of Sixth Street. Satisfied with their harmless prank and the bicycle rack’s new location, the boys moved on walking east down Main Street, when they heard a voice yelling at them to stop. Scared of being caught, the boys took off running. The Chief of Police Raymond Riede had been a few blocks away and witnessed the boys prank. Yelling at them to stop with no success, he began chasing them down Main Street and then made a split decision that would go on to impact his life and the life of Jack Christiansen forever. A warning shot was fired into the ground ahead from Chief Riede’s revolver. The sound alone was meant to scare the boys, not harm them. But for Christiansen, it wasn’t just the sound he felt but a bullet, ricocheting off the cement sidewalk and into his left arm, shattering the bones above his elbow. The following morning, a Cañon City Daily Record headline read, “Christiansen HS Athletic Career Over.” The promising upcoming basketball season would be missing one of its top scorers, and the Tigers would be out a quarterback for the remaining season. The bullet severed his radial nerve, which required several oper-

ations and indeed ended his high school athletic career. Born in December Jack 1928 in SubChristiansen lette, Kan., Jack Christiansen and his sister, Janice, moved to Wray with their mother after the death of their father. Shortly after, their mother remarried and moved to Michigan, leaving the two with their grandparents. Their grandfather was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, a benevolent organization with housing projects across North America. Member privileges included allowing members or family to stay in the IOOF homes if needed. Deciding that this was the best fit for the children, Janice and Jack moved to Cañon City at the ages of 9 and 7 and lived in the Odd Fellows home until graduation from high school. After the shooting, Christiansen was chosen as Head Boy for the class of 1946. Strong academically, he decided to attend Colorado A&M (now CSU) after graduation, with all tuition paid by IOFF. With only 75 percent mobility in his arm, Jack always the athlete, decided to try out for track his freshman year. According to a Daily Record article in 1949, with a mark of 47.6 in the 440-yard dash, Christiansen set a school record that stood for 20 years. In his sophomore year, he tried out for the football team, his speed and determination is credited for him making the 44-man roster. An injury to the starting safety early in the season got

Christiansen off the bench and set in motion his football career. During his time at CSU, Christiansen earned eight varsity letters, including one in baseball, as well as earned All Skyline Conference honors. In 1951, Christiansen graduated with the hopes of being drafted into the NFL, however, his 6 foot 1 frame, weighing in at 162, pounds was not a selling point for most. It was a Colorado native and former Detroit Lions player, Dutch Clark that convinced the Lions to gamble on Christiansen, picking him in the sixth round of the 1951 NFL draft. Chritiansen’s eight-year NFL career, all with the Detroit Lions, boosted many records. Known as an offensive threat, his punt return success had teams rethinking their punt formation in order to try to contain the speedy Christiansen. During his career, he ran back 85 punts for 1,084 yards and eight touchdowns, with a total of 13 touchdowns. Not to be contained to just an offensive threat, Chrsitansen’s real forte was defense. The defensive backfield of the Lions became known as the “Chris Crew” and under his leadership, they led the league for interceptions in 1953. Christiansen’s interception total ranks fourth on the Lions all-time list with 46 passes intercepted for 717 yards. Named an All Pro for six consecutive years and having played in five consecutive Pro Bowls, Christiansen retired after the 1958 season, the highest salary he received during his time was $15,000.
