Mabel Marie Marshall September 16, 1925 ~ October 20, 2019

Mabel Marshall went home to be with her Lord and Savior on October 20, 2019. She was born in Minneola, Kansas on September 16, 1925 to William Roy and Amzel I. (Borden) Marshall. Mabel worked for 35 years as a switchboard operator. She loved sewing, crocheting, embroidery, reading, her yard, flowers, and the deer that visited. She was a member of the First Assembly of God and Telephone Pioneers of America. She is survived by her siblings, Betty Minton of Pueblo, Dennis (Loise) Marshall of Canon City, Royse (Kate) Marshall of Swink, Kathy (Jim) Martin of Canon City

along with numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by sisters, Wanda DeJean and Lois (Garner) Berry; brothers, Leroy Marshall and David Marshall. Her radiant smile and teasing nature will be missed by all who knew her. Willie D. Masse

March 6, 1929 ~ October 21, 2019 Willie D. Masse, 90, passed away peacefully in her sleep on October 21, 2019. HolShe was born on March 6, 1929, in Pawnee, Oklahoma, to Dudley Lee and Nina (Ramey) Gribble. As a young child, she returned to Fremont County with her family, where she was raised in Canon City and in the Guffey area at the family homestead on Gribble Mountain. She graduated from Canon City High School in 1948. It was in high school that she met the love of her life, James L. Masse of Rockvale. They were married on September 1, 1950. After marriage, Willie and James grew their love to the tune of seven children and raised them all in Canon City. Willie was a homemaker and in 1967 went to work fulltime at the Colorado Department of Corrections. Through the years she held various positions to include Mail Cerk, Assistant to the Warden and Sewing Shop Supervisor at the Maximum Security Facility where she taught male inmates to sew. She retired in 1987, after 20 years of service. While retired, she and her husband would take many trips around the U.S. and Canada. They would spend their winters in Arizona and would travel and fish in their fifthwheel in the summers and fall.

Willie loved sewing, camping, fishing and gardening. She took great pride in her flower and rose gardens. But most of all she loved her family. There was no greater joy for her than to be with her children, grandchildren and great- grandchildren watching them play, compete in sports and 4-H and would brag about them proudly whenever given the opportunity. She is survived by her children, James Masse, Bill (Judy) Masse, Ray Masse, Tonia Masse, Tim (Michele) Masse, Kristy Masse, Bobby (Stephanie) Masse; sister-in-law, Betty Proud; 15 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; along with numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, James L. Masse; grandson, Jamie Masse; two brothers, three sisters; and her parents. Family’s sixth generation child born at St. Thomas More Hospital By Carie Canterbury The Daily Record

Family ties are tight in Cañon City’s longtime Berry family, and now those bonds are even stronger after the birth of little Jaxson Berry on Tuesday at St. Thomas More Hospital. Jaxson was born to Melissa and Alex Berry, and he is the sixth generation in the Berry family to be born at St. Thomas More. Not only is that significant, but Jaxon was delivered by Alex Berry’s first cousin, Dr. Breanna Berry, who is a physician with Centura Health Physician’s Group. The cousins grew up together, so delivering Jaxson was meaningful for Dr. Berry. “I locked eyes with him at first when he was born, and I just wanted to bawl,” Dr. Berry said. “Every delivery is special, but this is just a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. It is a beautiful experience. I feel honored and blessed to be able to be part of it.” Melissa Berry, who works as a case manager for Starpoint, was looking for an obstetrician when she wondered if Dr. Berry delivered babies in addition to her duties as a family physician. “I wouldn’t want anybody else,” Alex Berry said. Alex Berry, a cable technician with Spectrum, graduated from CCHS in 2005. He moved to Fort Collins, where he met Melissa. The Berry family ties are what prompted the couple to return to Cañon City in 2014. “We didn’t have anything tying us down to Fort Collins,” Alex Berry said. “There were only five generations worth of family to tie

us down to come back here. (Jaxson’s birth experience) epitomizes us moving back to Cañon City and being able to have this fortunate event.” Dr. Berry graduated from Cañon City High School in 2002. After completing college, medical school and her residency, she moved back to the area to work for Centura in 2018. “There is no replacement for friends and family,” she said. “It’s wonderful to be in your hometown and I wanted to be able to deliver care where I grew and to the people who helped shape me into who I am today.” She said the obstetrics

team at St. Thomas More is “phenomenal.” “It’s second to none,” she said. “It really, really is amazing. We are really lucky and blessed to have the ob nurses and nursing staff that we have. It made this experience for (Alex and Melissa) wonderful.” Dr. Berry said patients don’t always receive such special care in larger hospitals. “That’s why I wanted to be here and why it’s awesome to deliver our friends and family and patients here, you get that extra care,” she said. “They treat like you like family.”

Fremont Campus names new student services director Michael Maffucci is the new director of student services at the Pueblo Community College Fremont Campus. Maffucci has worked at PCC’s main campus in Pueblo for the past four years as the director of student life and leadership. Prior to that, he was the director of student engagement at South Piedmont Community College in North Carolina. “We are pleased to see this career opportunity for Mike made available,” said PCC President Patty Erjavec. “His tenure with the college and institutional knowledge are sure to contribute to ongoing student success, be it on the Fremont campus or with the institution as a whole.” Maffucci received his bachelor’s degree in recreation and leisure studies from the University of Mount Olive in North Carolina and his master’s in higher education administration from Lou-

Area high school bands to compete at Colorado championships By Carie Canterbury The Daily Record

Fremont County will be well represented during the Colorado Bandmasters Association State Championship on Nov. 4 in Grand Junction. Florence High School marked the highest state qualifying score in the 1A division and the Cañon City High School Tiger Pride Marching Band took first place in the 3A division during the Southern Colorado CBA Regionals on Oct. 16. In honor of the achievements, the Fremont County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday accepted a proclamation designating Oct. 26 as Fremont County High School Marching Band Day. “This whole marching band season we’ve been working really hard,” said CCHS Drum Major Alyssa Howard. “It’s kind of amazing – we actually just got some of our final props, our final flags, our final visuals that we are adding. It’s kind of amazing that we put this together before regionals and it brought us to a first-place ranking.” FHS Drum Major Mya Ramirez said the band had obstacles to overcome before getting to the point to where they are now, taking first place by 1.1 points. “That’s actually pretty amazing because we beat bands that we haven’t even thought about this year,” she said. “It was pretty amazing and such a big accomplishment.” David Wood, the director of bands for Florence Jr/Sr High School, said he is excited about the progress of the Florence band program. “This is the first time that Florence has ever won the southern region,” he said. “These students have worked extremely hard and it is nice to see all of their hard work and dedication paying off at a state level. This has also presented great opportunities for both Florence and Cañon City band programs to support each

I was so happy when Dave and Justin talked to me about getting together for a performance together, just to cheer on one another’s bands – there was no question about it, we

were going to be all about it!” According to the proclamation, CCHS currently is ranked No. 3 in their division in the state and Florence is ranked No. 1. The schools will co-host the Fremont County Showcase, a community performance/Fremont County state send-off, at 4:30 p.m. Saturday at Citizens Stadium, located at CCHS, 1313 College Ave. The public is invited to see their 2019 field marching shows before they go to the state competition. This is a free event open to the community. Also during Tuesday’s meeting, the board took the following action: — Approved an amendment to the Fremont County Zoning Reso-

lution to allow for Limited Wineries in Agricultural Forestry, Agricultural Farming & Ranching, Agricultural Living, & Agricultural Rural Zone Districts. Justin Jenkins of Jenkins Farms in Penrose said this will allow him to add a winery, which would provide some sustainability to his business and others in the area. It also would be a benefit to the local economy, he said. With the change in regulations, Charles ‘Andy’ Brown plans to relocate his Denver-based hard cider business to Fremont County and bring back some “apple economy” to the area. — Scheduled a public hearing for 10 a.m. Nov. 12 for the proposed 2020 Fremont County Bud-

get. It will be available at www.fremontco.com later this week. — Approved a proclamation declaring Oct. 24 World Polio Day in Fremont County, on behalf of Canon City Rotary Club. Contributions may be made at Rotary.org. — Approved a minor subdivision for a site located at the intersection of Eighth Street and C. Street in Penrose. — Approved a transfer of ownership for Canon Dolomite Quarry from Rocky Mountain Materials to Canon Dolomite Quarry, LLC. — Appointed Hailey Atkinson and Gordon Grosslight to the Fremont County Airport Advisory Board for three-year terms ending Oct. 1, 2022.

Wondering what to do with used eyeglass frames? Don’t throw them away. Donating eyeglass frames is an easy way to help people who can’t function normally because they can’t see well. Instead, they have to live with functional blindness — the inability to see well enough to do basic everyday tasks, such as reading, writing, cooking and earning a living. High Country Bank is accepting submissions for its Lights, Camera, Save! video contest. The contest, organized by the American Bankers Association Foundation, is a national competition that encourages teens to use video to communicate the value of saving money and inspire their peers to become lifelong savers. “Lights, Camera, Save! gives Chaffee, Park, Lake, Fremont and surrounding area students an

opportunity to harness their creativity, learn about using money wisely and communicate those lessons with their peers,” said Robin NeJame, Marketing and Community Outreach Director at High Country Bank. “A strong financial education provides essential life skills and we are thrilled to participate in a contest that reinforces that message.” To participate, students (ages 13-18) must create a video, 90-seconds or less, on saving and using money wisely and submit a link to the video along with a completed entry form to the bank by Dec. 3. winner to compete on the national level for a prize up to $5,000, plus a scholarship for a teacher at their school to attend the annual Jump$tart National Educator Conference. Officials: Decker Fire fully contained By Sarah Rose The Daily Record

The Decker Fire, which ignited a month and a half ago near Salida in the Sangre de Cristo Wilderness, is now fully contained, according to a press release. Containment does not mean the fire is completely

extinguished – it means that the fire is contained within a perimeter. “It is important to remember that the fire is NOT out, and smoke from larger diameter fuels will continue to be visible,” a press release stated. Fire personnel made sig-

nificant progress on the wildfire this week. On Monday, the fire was 35 percent contained. Officials said snow that fell Wednesday and Thursday helped in their efforts. The Decker Fire base camp received 4 inches, while the high country closer to the

fire reached higher amounts. At about noon Thursday, Fremont County officials canceled the remaining preevacuation notice, which was in Bear Creek and Howard Zone 1. Chaffee County also canceled any remaining preevacuation notices Thursday. At one time, Bear Creek/ County Road 49 in Fremont County, Swissvale, Wellsville, Howard and parts of

Chaffee County were on mandatory evacuation or pre-evacuation. Fire personnel will continue to work in the area. “The focus in all areas of the fire is switching from suppression to suppression repair and backhaul of equipment,” a press release stated. “This involves clearing and chipping brush, repairing dozer and handlines, and

installing erosion control measures, as well as removing pumps, hoses, sprinklers, and “pumpkin” water tanks.” The fire burned 8,910 acres, including approximately 200 acres in Fremont County, according to nciweb.nwcg.gov. The fire, started by lightning, originated nine miles away from Salida on Sept. 8.

Florence Council candidates field questions during forum at Bell Tower By Sarah Rose The Daily Record

Five candidates running for Florence City Council seats responded to questions during a forum Oct. 16 at the Bell Tower Cultural Center. Anthony R. Esquibel, John Cobler (incumbent) and Kristal Wood are running for Ward I. Running uncontested are Brian Allen for Ward II and Mike Vendetti (incumbent) for Ward III. One of the questions asked during the forum was, “What is your vision for the city of Florence within the next five to 10 years and what are your personal priorities you would like to see accomplished?” Cobler said one of his top priorities includes preserving Florence’s resources. “I would like to see controlled expansion with housing and growth,” he said. “I would like to see where we are going to figure out the best places to build. High Meadows is a good place, Sumo has availability, and we just need to get those vacancies filled downtown with the stores, get more people in. My big things are the streets, sidewalks and protect the assets of the community, which is water and property.” Vendetti said that high-speed internet will save small towns. “I think one of the great things that happened is Unbridled coming to town and buying the old high school, which they, I believe, intend to turn it into a high-speed internet area … ,” he said. “I can see people moving to town to work through the incubators so to speak. I see the town growing because of the internet.” Allen said children in Florence don’t have much fun. “Growth, but the right kind,” he said. “Jobs that pay our people for what they deserve to be paid. Things for children to do. Families looking for some place to relocate to are looking at things like that. What do the children have to do? … That’s one of my main personal issues is looking into a skate park and things of that nature. Marketing Florence. We have to market Florence right.” Esquibel said streets are one of his main worries. “I agree, growth is something to keep a small town going,” he said. “We have to be able to grow. And in order to do so, we need to bring in new business. I have big concerns with streets and intersections. We have a very, very big problem with them. That’s one of my biggest problems that I have. New opportunities for our young and our old. What will bring new people in is families, something for them to do.” Wood said she would like Florence to attract more people. “Personally (my vision) would be that our city be a destination city but with a small-town feel,” she said. “What does that mean? That means with our businesses, we have more. We don’t have any emp-

Vendetti said a marijuana grow facility will bring in additional revenue, which is what Florence needs more of. “I have a plan to bring money in and it’s not popular with some people because they look at it as a 1980s Cheech and Chong movie …,” he said. “I think that council needs to make a decision to bring a grow facility into an area outside of Sumo and make rules. It has to be 1,000 feet from habitation and so

Cobler said he’s enthusiastic about the future of Florence. “Years ago, the people here supported me and I just want to support them back and make the best decisions I can for this community and see it grow,” he said. “I have the utmost confidence in everybody up here. Everybody up here is very intelligent, has good ideas and I think as a whole, we can do the best we can for this community and really go places.” Wood said if elected, she will pay attention to her constituents. “I really just want to represent Ward I,” she said. “To me, that looks like listening to those I represent, communicating with them, listening to what they have to say. … If all my neighbors say they

want things to go a certain way and I don’t agree with it, I’m going to vote their way because that’s who I represent. Also, research and getting a look at the whole picture is so important.” Esquibel said he is happy to be a resident of Florence and hopes everyone can work as a team. “I feel that we have a great town here and I feel if we work together, this town will be and has always been, something that we can be proud of,” he said. “If we work together, things can get done. If we work as a community, I feel that all of us together listening, talking and representing each other, we will get something done.” Allen agreed with Esquibel. “We just need to work together, follow through and communicate

with each other,” he said. “As the voices of Ward I, II, III and the mayor, I think as long as we are working together with each other and nobody is fighting, I think we would get more accomplished together than we would if we were arguing with each other.” For Ward I, the candidate who receives the highest number of votes will be elected to a four-year term, while the person who receives the next highest number will be elected for two years. “Normally we would have only had one open seat in Ward I, which would have been a four-year term,” said Jessica Griffith, Florence deputy city clerk. “But due to having a council member resign this year before her term was up (in 2021), we had both seats in Ward I open.”
