Cañon City Daily Record and Shopper’s Small Business Contest
Frontier Feeds named September winner
Frontier Feeds has been announced as the September winner of the Cañon City Daily Record and Shopper’s Small Business Contest. The Striegel family has been operating Frontier Feeds for three generations. Boyde Striegel started the business in 1987 and built the business with his son, Robert. Today, Robert and his son, Sean, operate the business. When the business opened its doors on the east side of Canon City, there was just hay fields and U.S. 50. Since then, the area has boomed with chain stores and restaurants, homes and hotels. “With our small town getting bigger every year, we want to make sure we can keep up with a growing community ranchers, small farmers and pet owners,” owner Sean Striegel said. “Advertising, in print and online, is the name of the game for a small business. Hopefully, this award will boost our visibility and sales and really just get people to know we are here!” The contest, which was launched in March, will award six businesses through the end of the year. A team of independent judges selected the six winners from entry letters. One business will be selected each month through December. Each winner will receive free website design and hosting for one year, as well as six months of free digital and print advertising (valued at $500 per month). A grand prize winner will be announced in January and will receive a renovation package. Sean Striegel said he always has been passionate about the pet industry and hopes to amplify that aspect of the feed store in the future. “We at Frontier Feeds strive to stock a variety of high quality feed for any and all animals and are proud to provide not only hay and straw, livestock feeds and

Atmos Energy to begin upgrading aging infrastructure in 2020 Carie Canterbury The Daily Record
Atmos Energy’s effort to upgrade aging infrastructure in Cañon City is slated to begin next year. The upgrade will replace parts of the system with newer natural gas lines to increase the safety and reliability of its natural gas delivery system. Representatives from Atmos Energy met with city, county and state officials Friday to share information about the latest safety investments and pipe replacement project. Atmos plans during the next five years to spend $15 million in Fremont County replacing about 15 miles of pipe. The
projected work area in 2020 includes Harrison Avenue between College and Macon and Ninth and 12th streets and the area of Eighth and Bridge streets. Jennifer Altieri, the director of public affairs for Atmos Energy, said officials will meet with customers and city representatives to provide more detailed information about the project as time draws near. The project is expected to take about two months. “It’s a very concerted effort to make sure everybody knows exactly what’s going on,” she said. The work should have minimal impact on customers. During the project, contractors will use a bypass unit, which will allow customers to maintain service.
Atmos Energy officials are working closely with city engineers to plan work around stormwater and street paving projects to avoid conflict and to make sure new streetscape won’t have to be dug up. For more information, visit www. atmosenergy.com/colorado, or call 1-888286-6700. Call Before You Dig Call 811 at least three business days before you want to dig. You’ll reach an 811 call center, which will coordinate with Atmos Energy, the electric company and other utilities to mark all the utility-owned underground pipes and cables. Here’s how it works: — Call 811 to locate utility-owned pipelines and cables.
— Utility lines are located and marked with color-coded flags. — Respect the flags by not digging close to them. — It’s free. It’s safe. And it’s required by law. The most common cause of outside natural gas leaks is digging or construction that disturbs natural gas pipelines. If you nick, scrape or dent a natural gas pipeline, call 911, then call Atmos Energy’s emergency number at 866-322-8667 so they can inspect the pipeline and make any needed repairs. Even minor damage can weaken a pipeline and lead to a future leak. — Information provided by atmosenergy.com.

Open up your heart and love these kids. There is no bigger blessing. It's not heartache when they leave and go to the right place, their birth family or adoptive family, where they are supposed to be - it's just a beautiful thing. -Moses family
COFosterandAdopt.org Fremont County Department of Human Services is always looking for foster families. There are currently 90 children in care in Fremont County alone. 30 of these children are placed out of the community due to a shortage of foster families. If you would like to know more about what you can do to keep our kids in our community, please come to an informational meeting. They are held the 3rd Monday of every month from 5-6 at Fremont County DHS.
