Once the focal point of meetings with governors, financial managers, politicians and business leaders, the Peabody Mansion continues to be a hub of activity in downtown Cañon City. Built in the 1880s for James Clelland, the Victorian house set on a quiet, residential, tree-lined lane known as River Street, now Royal Gorge Boulevard. In 1875, James H. Peabody moved to Cañon City and married Clelland’s daughter. They were given the Peabody Mansion as a wedding present. Peabody was elected to a two-year term as governor while Frances Lillian Clelland Peabody took over the duties First Lady of Colorado. When Peabody died at age 65 in 1917, Mrs. Peabody sold the home, which served many different purposes until purchased by Darryl Biggerstaff in 1988. Biggerstaff later sold it to Cañon City as part of a downtown revitalization and urban renewal effort, known as the River Station Project. The Cañon City Chamber of Commerce took over its operation and purchased the building from Cañon City. As part of its use, the chamber has become a focal point for tourists coming into town, as well as businesses joining the organization. The Chamber now sees an opportunity to grow and relocate to another property. The Chamber’s board of directors will review offers on this wonderful and historic property. Edward Lehman

September 10, 1925 - November 10, 2018 Ed Lehman, a Colorado newspaper owner and publisher, died November 10, 2018 at the age of 93 surrounded by family and friends at Longmont United Hospital. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday November 16, 2018 at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, 1303 S. Bross Lane, Longmont. Ed was born in Denver on September 10, 1925. He graduated from St. John’s Military School in Salina, KS and returned often for Memorial Day weekend reunions. He earned undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Denver. Later Ed served as the university’s national alumni president and member of the Board of Trustees. Ed received the Evans Award, DU’s highest honor. Ed’s newspaper career began when he was 17 years old. He started as a police and fire reporter for the Rocky Mountain News while attending the University of Denver. He later joined The Denver Post and advanced to the position of tricounty editor by the time he completed his law studies. As a young man, Ed was elected to the Colorado House of Representatives from Denver for the 40th General Assembly. Many years before the highway was completed, Ed was asked to lead a joint effort between Colorado and Utah to obtain an interstate highway system designation for a Denver to Salt Lake City route. Ed married Ruth Gillespie of Denver on April 22, 1949, and they were married for 50 years. Ed and Ruth practiced law together in Denver before they purchased the majority interest in the Longmont Daily Times-Call in 1957. They worked together to build the newspaper company that would later become Lehman Communications Corporation and grew to include two more daily newspapers, the Loveland Daily Reporter-Herald and the Canon City Daily Record. The company also published the Colorado Hometown Weekly which served Louisville, Lafayette and Erie. The company produced web press commercial printing and designed and built a state-of-the-art production and printing facility that opened in Berthoud in 2009. Ed took great interest in designing buildings which were well planned. The newspapers of Lehman Communications were often recognized with awards in state, regional and national journalism contests. The newspapers supported community projects and non-profit organizations in addition to reporting the “hard” news of the day including crime, accidents, politics, and government. The newspapers published many humaninterest stories featuring local residents. Ed wrote hundreds of editorials during his career as well as many personal columns. Ed was a strong advocate for open meetings of government and public records because of his belief in the public’s right to know. Working with local citizens and public officials including former Sen. Gordon Allott, R-Colo., Ed was instrumental in bringing the Federal Aviation Administration facility to Longmont. “Our father worked in many different

areas of Colorado life. Often it was behind the scenes. He was hardworking, versatile and remarkably imaginative,” said Ed and Ruth’s daughter Lauren, a former TimesCall editor and later financial officer. The Times-Call supported improvements and expansion of schools, civic buildings, emergency services and the hospital. He was president of the Longmont Chamber of Commerce and the Longmont Rotary Club where he was a member for 60 years. Ed was active in economic development efforts in Longmont and in Colorado. “Ed was a dedicated and generous man. A talented journalist and businessman, his company’s motto, ‘To Build A Better World, Start in Your Own Community’ helped to inspire many people to do great things,” said Dean Lehman, Ed and Ruth’s son and former president of Lehman Communications. Ed received recognition from the Longs Peak Council of Boy Scouts, the Longmont Board of Realtors and the Rotary Club. Ed was president of the Colorado Press Association where he was named Colorado’s Outstanding Publisher in 1967. He served as president of the Chicago-based Inland Press Association and he received its highest honor-- the Ralph D. Casey Minnesota award. On January 27, 2001 Ed and Connie Coffield were married at St. Stephen’s Church in Longmont. They enjoyed travel, attending cultural events and visiting their home in Estes Park. Lehman Communications was sold in 2011 to Prairie Mountain Publishing, the owner of numerous Colorado newspapers. Ed loved people and was a warm and gracious host. He positively beamed when guests arrived at the door. He was an enthusiastic woodworker and enjoyed spending time in his shop. Ed had a great sense of humor and always had many good stories to share. He loved his grandchildren dearly. Ed served on the Boettcher Foundation board of directors for 15 years and was honored with a $500,000 gift for donation to a charity of his choice. Ed chose the YMCA of Longmont which was rededicated in September 2002 as the Ed and Ruth Lehman YMCA in recognition of Ed’s gift and the Lehmans’ leadership. Ed is survived by his wife Connie, and daughter Lauren Lehman and her husband John Kivimaki of Erie, son Dean Lehman and his wife Anne of Longmont and Ed and Ruth’s two grandchildren. Ed is also survived by Connie’s daughter Dana Coffield and her husband Doug Conarroe of Lafayette, son Lyle Coffield and his wife Cybele Pelcher of Half Moon Bay, CA. Dora L.(Hammock) Diamond Gifted preschool October 8, 1939 - November 6, 2018

Dora Lee (Hammock) Diamond passed away peacefully with her loving family around her after complications from a fall in Logan, Utah on Tuesday, November 6, 2018. She was born October 8, 1939, in Grant, Oklahoma to Dayton Hammock and Loree Rogers Hammock. She married the love of her life Glen (Don) Donald Diamond on November 21, 1958. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Los Angeles California Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on January 23, 1965. Dora grew up in Oklahoma, Oregon and Utah. She served her country by supporting Don for over 23 years in the United States Navy which allowed them to live in many states coast to coast. They made lifelong friends and had fun adventures along the way. They retired in 1978. Don and Dora loved camping and were happiest spending time in the outdoors with their family and friends. Dora loved music, singing and dancing. She loved doing ceramics and even had her own kiln. During Don and Dora's 50th Anniversary celebration in Hawaii, she learned that she loved snorkeling and being in a cage in the open ocean surrounded by sharks. March 25 1947 - October 29 2018 James Otis Couch, 71, of Penrose, CO died of natural causes on October 29, 2018. Born on March 25, 1947, he was the first born child of Lonnie E Couch and Jewell Pauline Couch, who preceded him in death along with his brother Gene Couch and sister Wanda Mitchell. Briefly George F. Kimmick July 29, 1935 ~ November 12, 2018

George Kimmick, 83, passed away November 12, 2018 in Canon City, Colorado. He was born in Canon City on July 29, 1935 to the union of Adam J. Kimmick and Mary Anna Boben. George grew up in Canon City, graduating from Canon City High School in 1953. He excelled as a basketball player, having been on the team that won the State Championship his senior year. Always active in sports, he loved playing basketball with local teams, was a fast-pitch third baseman, and an avid bowler. He later enjoyed golf and was a member of Shadow Hills Golf Club. George was an outdoorsman, and loved to boat and fish with his family in Gunnison. He also enjoyed Cripple Creek and fine dining and sung karaoke several times a week. George married Charlotte Jane Reuker in Raton, New Mexico on October 10, 1959. As a young man, he worked as quality control at Laclede-Christy in Canon City. In 1964, he became an agent for Conoco and in 1976, he and Charlotte purchased property from Conoco and created Kimmick Oil Co, Inc., a fuel distributorship. In 1978, their son John joined them to open and operate Bee Kleen Car Wash. In 1983, E-Z Food Stop at 12th and Royal Gorge Blvd. was built and operated by the

family, and the property at 402 Royal Gorge Blvd. was operated at A-1 Auto Supply. In March of 2018, the last of the family's businesses was sold, culminating in 54 years doing business in Canon City. George was active in the community, having served as Fremont County Commissioner from 1972 to 1976. He served on many committees in Canon City, served with the National Guard, and was a lifelong member of the Elks for 54 years. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Charlotte; son, John K. Kimmick; sister, Marilyn Herman; brother, Edward Kimmick, brother-in-law, Donald Reuker of West Virginia, nieces, nephews, and numerous friends. A Celebration of George's life will be held Friday, November 16, 2018, 11:00 am at the Wilson Memorial Chapel, 1449 S 9th Street, Canon City. Visitation will be held one hour prior. Interment Lakeside Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in George's name can be made to the Fremont County Humane Society. Ent Credit Union coming to Cañon City Ent Credit Union is ﬁnalizing plans to develop a service center in Cañon City, according to a press release. The credit union will be located at The Shops at Fourmile Creek at 127 Justice Center Road. The location will be the credit union’s ﬁrst in Fremont County. According to the press release, Ent’s Cañon City Service Center will be a 2,400 square foot facility, incorporating “state-of-theart technology, including the ability to instantly issue

debit cards, as well as two Interactive Teller Machines within the facility itself.” An additional driveup ITM with extended live video teller hours is planned for the site, which will be added during a second phase of development. Ent anticipates the new location will open in late spring 2019. Founded in 1957, Ent Credit Union has more than $5.4 billion in assets, more than 330,000 members and more than 30 convenient service center locations along the Front Range.

he said. “Allen asked me to help out, and that’s what I’m doing.” Irvine nominated Cooper as a sheriff candidate during the Fremont County Republican Assembly in March because he has a great deal of respect for Cooper’s leadership. “Allen’s always been one of those supervisors you can go to with any problem you’re dealing with, whether it’s on the street, home, wherever, he always offered guidance,” Irvine said. Cooper is assembling a transition team made up of subject matter experts to audit the entire sheriff’s office that will provide him with feedback on areas that are working well and areas that need work. He said this is something that typically is done when there is a significant change of command, which he has been through a number of times. During his tenure with the CCPD, Cooper has been through four city administrators and five chiefs of police. With Cooper and Irvine joining forces and moving from the city over to the county, Cooper said he looks forward to strengthening the relationship between city and county law enforcement. “We’re all doing the same job, whatever level we’re in,” he said. “That collaborative effort I think is needed, and it’s going to be needed more and more in government.” He said combing resources and working together makes it easier to accomplish goals and saves taxpayer dollars.

I want to say Thank You to all of our Veterans, Past-Present-Future. Without you, we would not have a voice in elections. As I sit here writing the last edition of “Elections Matter” for 2018, I cannot get out of my mind that it is Veteran’s Day – the 100th anniversary of the end of WWI. Just the fact that I can sit here and write, in a free country, able to enjoy the freedoms that the greatest country in the history of the world has to offer is almost beyond comprehension. We owe a HUGE debt of gratitude to those service men and women -- past, present and future, who have insured that all of us can continue to live in freedom. Thank you veterans for your service and sacrifice! The 2018 election is behind us and the cast is set for the 72nd Colorado General Assembly. I would like to take a moment to say a big THANK YOU to all of you who supported me for a 4th term! It has been an honor to serve you in the past, and I am blessed with the opportunity to continue to serve. I would be remiss if I did not recognize my opponent – Erin Kelley. We made a pact to keep our HD 60 campaign positive from the “git-go”. We spoke to our records, our aspirations and our willingness to serve HD 60. Based upon comments about negative campaigns across the state, I feel voters in HD 60 appreciated our positive approach to this election cycle. Thank you, Erin. The 2018 election cycle in Colorado presented an interesting dichotomy. State-wide, there was a move to elect liberal-leaning state officials. On the other hand, voters across the state rejected most tax and spending issues – a reflection of conservative values. The simple fact of the election? Colorado still includes both liberal and conservative mindsets. That being said, the balance of power under the Golden Dome shifted to the left in both the House and Senate. For the 72nd General Assembly, the House appears to be Democrat by a 41-24 majority (the largest since 1936, I believe). The Senate will be Democrat by a 19-16 margin. With majorities in both chambers, coupled with a D in the Governor’s Mansion, most democrat-

sponsored bills will have a wide open road to becoming law. In the 2013-14 General Assembly, I served in the House under similar circumstances. The R’s were in the minority in both chambers with a Democrat Governor. The D’s over-reached by forcing through their agenda. Over-reach resulted in the recall of 2 Senators and the resignation of a 3rd. We just completed a session with split chambers where folks had to “play nice” in order to get bills passed. When the scale tips heavily in one direction, no matter which party is in control, the temptation to over-reach looms large. As your representative, I will continue to be a strong voice for rural Colorado. I will fight for the people in HD 60. Over the past 6 years, I have been fortunate to have passed numerous bills on a myriad of subjects. Because of the relationships I have built in the past, I plan to continue being an effective legislator. The key to getting things done while in the minority is being respected by, and working cooperatively with the other side. I have proven in the past that I can operate effectively on the House floor. The 2018 election vividly demonstrated that elections DO matter. You just thought it was over – get ready…only 23 ½ months until the next one! “The UGLY Christmas Sweater Parade” Parade Entry Rules 1.

The Christmas Parade of Lights has not been cancelled, or postponed in its thirty year history. The parade will go on as scheduled. This is a winter event. We ask that you plan accordingly. There may be snow on Main Street. The parade will start at 5th Street and end at 10th Street. 2. No live Santa Claus is allowed on any entry. 3. All entries must be lit in a holiday fashion. 4. Any entry that has hoofed animals, or any entry deemed high risk by the City of Cañon City or the Cañon City Chamber of Commerce, must provide a minimum of $1,000,000 liability insurance naming the City of Cañon City and the Cañon City Chamber of Commerce as certificate holder and as additional insured. Certificates are due no later the 11/16/18. Your entry will not be allowed in the parade if you have not met these requirements. 5. Drivers of vehicles must be legally licensed and insured. Driver must practice cautious driving skills during the parade lineup and route. 6. No items (candy, toys, etc.) may be thrown or handed out from a parade entry that would cause spectators to enter the street. Any hand-outs must be done from the curb side only. 7. All entries that will be judged must be in their assigned staging and setup position by 4:30 p.m. Your entry must be fully assembled, staffed, and all lights illuminated as it will appear in the parade. Your entry representative must be present at this time. Entries not in their assigned position by 4:30 p.m. may not be judged. 8. Judged entries will be judged in five areas: (1) Use of Lights, (2) Incorporating the theme “Ugly Christmas Sweater”, (3) Originality, (4) Creativity, and (5) Quality of Workmanship. The "Youth Division" is intended to provide equality for entries designed and constructed by youth with adult help and supervision. If your entry is designed and constructed primarily by adults, then your entry should be in the "Community Division". 9. Entries that will not be judged must be in their assigned staging and setup position by 5:30 p.m. 10. Once the parade starts, please keep the distance between your entry and the entry ahead of you. 11. Due to placement of parade entries it is imperative that all cancellations call Chris Brady at the Chamber office at 275-2331, or 371-7977 (cell). 12. Entry numbers provided by the parade committee must be placed on the front right and front left side of entry. 13. Do not stop on Main Street after your entry has finished the parade. Please turn north on to 10th Street. Please make arrangements for pickups on 10th Street, or some other area that is north of Main Street. Do not take your entry on to Highway US 50. 14. Only parade entries vehicles will be allowed in the parade staging and setup area (3rd through 5th Streets). Additional people in your entry will need to walk to their designated area. 15. Parade entry vehicles should enter staging and setup area from North sides of 3rd Street, 4th Street. Entrants will not be allowed to access Main Street from any streets south of Main (4th, or 5th, Streets). 16. We will provide you with staging and setup location that is on, or near, Main Street. We will have parade staff in the staging and setup area to assist you in finding your assigned location. 17. When entering the staging and setup area, please approach your assigned position from the “west”. Your entry must be headed “east”, towards 5th Street. 18. Do not leave your entry unattended at any time. The driver for your entry must be available should we need to have your entry moved. Do not block the middle of Main Street. 19. It is the responsibility of the organization sponsoring the entry to ensure that everyone in your group understands and obeys all the rules. The Cañon City Chamber Christmas parade committee reserves the right to refuse entry into the parade, and/or to remove any participant from the parade for any reason the parade director deems appropriate.
