December 1, 1943 - September 13, 2018

Cheryl Rene Andres, 74, passed away with her family and her wonderful dog Chico by her side September 13, 2018. She was born December 1, 1943 to Gerald and Alice (Waite) Andres in Vancouver, Washington. Cheryl loved people and spent most of her working years in retail, always making friends of her customers. When Cheryl wasn't working she enjoyed her time in the mountains and loved riding her motorcycle. She was also an accomplished artist painting the beautiful mountains she visited. Cheryl is survived by

her children; Kimberly Martinez, James (Mary) Conrey II, Kathleen (Art) Tafoya; siblings, Gerald Andres II, Danielle Andres and grandchildren; Jake Conrey, Joshua Martinez, Chad Baker, Austin Baker and Amelia Conrey. Doris Markley

February 22, 1928 ~ September 13, 2018 Doris Markley, 90, of Canon City, went home to be with home to be with the Lord September 13, 2018. Doris was born February 22, 1928 in Spur, Texas to Omar and Opal (Henderson) Catt. Doris was a pastor's wife, and foster parent of over 80 children, and mentored many. She touched the lives of so many and will be dearly missed by anyone fortunate enough to know her. Doris is survived by her daughters, Becky (Gilbert) Pineda, Sandra Bell, Dawn (Thomas) Nowotny; six grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and nine great-greatgrandchildren; and her

brother, Rex Catt. Doris was preceded in death by her husband, Leland Russel Markley; her son-in-law, Ronald Bell; and great-grandson, Kyle Cody Duran. Mary Ann Herman

May 10, 1943 - September 11, 2018 Mary Ann Herman left this world for a more peaceful one on September 11, 2018. She was born to Glen and Ruby (Baines) Marple on May 10, 1943 in Iowa City, IA. She spent most of her life working in the food and service industry. Mary Ann and her former husband Bruce Schultz owned and operated the original Kentucky Fried Chicken for many years in Alliance, NE, which opened its doors in 1978. After a span of 40 years, Mary Ann was once again united with the love of her life, Keith Herman. They enjoyed spending their time together, with family and friends, traveling, lending a helping hand to anyone who needed it, playing a great game of "Bummer" and chasing after their little dog Killer. In 2014, Mary Ann and Keith relocated to Alliance, NE to be closer to children and grand-children. She was a loving wife and mother and will be remembered for the kindness and generosity she shared with others. Albrecht presents ‘Musical Notes — A Singspiration!’

First United Methodist Church of Pueblo will host Todd Albrecht who will present Musical Notes for An Evening American Songbook Classics and Songs of Inspiration -- A Singspiration! at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 30 at 310 W. 11th St. in Pueblo. It will be an evening featuring songs by Gershwin, Rodgers and Hart, Cole Porter as well as other musical theatre offerings. In addition, they will include favorite songs of inspiration and faith. The evening will feature Albrecht and his wife, Kelly, as well as special guests Denise Barragan and the Chancel Choir of First United Methodist Church. Juanita DeHart, Arlene Watson and Richard Clark will provide accompaniment for the event.

For several years, Albrecht performed and produced Musical Notes at La Renaissance in Pueblo at the beautiful restaurant before it closed. Since then, he has put on a couple of different Musical Notes productions in Cañon City where he teaches Vocal Music at Cañon City High School. Musical Notes shows were dinner shows that were centrally themed around different musical inﬂuences, composers or eras, but always a variety/cabaret format. They usually ran for three or four nights and were very well-attended. In fact, most were sold out. This past year Albrecht returned to directing music at First United Methodist Church of Pueblo where he had previously directed for 14 years.

“I thought it would be a great time to try a version of the Musical Notes shows again with a little bit of faith and inspirational music thrown in along with the Classic American Songbook selections we have always incorporated,” he said. Dinner will be served at 5:30 p.m. consisting of pasta, salad, rolls and incredible desserts. Following dinner, guests will be invited to the sanctuary where the presentation will follow. There are limited number of tickets available. Tickets are $20 each for dinner/show and are available at Pueblo First United Methodist Church of Pueblo. Phoebe Ann Wood

December 10, 1932 ~ September 9, 2018 Phoebe Ann Wood, age 85, passed away on September 9, 2018. Born December 10th, 1932 in Brush, Colorado, Phoebe was the third child born to Glen and Gladys Cowen. Her family later moved to Haxtun, Colorado. She graduated from Haxtun High School in 1951. In 1952 she moved to Colorado Springs, graduating from Blair Business College where she married and traveled with her first husband, Laverne Westerman and their two sons, Rick and David. In 1967 she met Julian "Woody" Wood and they were married at the Baptist Church in Canon City, Colorado where they raised a family of four children; Woody's children, Gwen and Mark along with Phoebe's two sons. In 1987 Phoebe and Woody retired to a small mountain community near Texas Creek. After a brief move to Colorado Springs, they then moved again to Florida in 2009 due to Woody's failing health. After Woody passed away, Phoebe returned to Colorado before relocating to Sturgis, South Dakota where she resided at Aspen Grove Assisted Living Center until she went to be with our Lord. Phoebe is survived by

her daughter, Gwen(Tom) McKee of Hudson, Florida; sons, Mark (Kathy) Wood of Rapid City, South Dakota and David Westerman of Gunnison, Colorado; two grandchildren, Mary (Mike) Pollard of Colorado Springs, Colorado and Matt McKee of Los Angeles, California; great-granddaughter, Amber Pollard of Rapid City, South Dakota; two sisters, Elizabeth Sedenburg of Johnstown, Colorado and Joan Starnes, of Haxtun, Colorado; brother, Glen (Dorothy) Cowen of Grand Junction, Colorado; along with many nieces and nephews that she adored. She was preceded in death by her parents, Glen and Gladys Cowen; husband, Julian "Woody" Wood; son, Rick Westerman; and brother, Manuel Cowen. July 31, 1941 - August 30, 2018 Patricia "Pat" A. Wells, 77, of Loveland, passed away in her home in Loveland, CO on Thursday, August 30, 2018. She was born July 31, 1941 in La Junta CO to Donald and Juanita (Fleming) Higgins. She graduated from Golden High School in 1959 and then moved to Kimball Nebraska working as a cook where she met and married the love of her life, Charles O. Wells on September 23, 1961. In 1965 they moved to Canon City where they bought a motel that they owned/operated for 28 years during which time they raised three children. Patricia's husband Charles passed way in 2005 and she moved to Loveland in March of 2016 to be closer to her children and grandchildren. She leaves behind her children Charles Wells

Jr., David Wells and Sue (John) Ehlers; her brothers James Higgins and Richard Higgins; and four grandchildren Allie, Gabrielle, Josh and Zach. Briefly Flu vaccination clinics set across Fremont County The Fremont County Department of Public Health and Environment will host ﬂu vaccination clinics. The ﬁrst clinic will be from 9 a.m. to noon Oct. 6 at the Garden Park Building, located at 201 N. Sixth St. Vaccinations will be provided free of charge at this event. Another clinic will be from 10 a.m. to noon Oct. 10 at the Penrose Community Library, located at 35 Seventh St. in Penrose. Participants should have an insurance card available. This vaccination clinic will not accept Kaiser Permanente, but those with this insurance can pay $25 and submit the receipt to the insurance for reimbursement. Fremont County students may qualify for scholarship program A-1 Auto Transport, located out of Aptos, Calif., has extend their scholarship program to eligible students in Cañon City. These scholarships come in the sum of $250, $500 or $1,000 each year. To participate, students that qualify must be currently enrolled at an accredited college, post-secondary program or university. Students must maintain a grade point average of 3.0 or higher. To enter for a chance at A-1’s scholarship program, the students that qualify must complete an essay of 1,000 words or more about anything related to the auto transport industry, including any of A-1’s car shipping services. Fremont Civic Theatre brings back ‘Annie,’ debuts this Friday

By India Beach The Daily Record The Fremont Civic Theatre will present “Annie,” the classic Broadway musical about a young orphaned girl and her experiences. The Fremont Civic Theatre is the oldest community theatre in Colorado with a lengthy 71 years of operation. “Annie” was first performed by the Fremont Civic theatre nine years ago. Nancy Fenyves, the director, said she was hesitant to remake Annie. “The community loved the first performance of ‘Annie,’ saying it was Broadway-ready,” Fenyves said. However, FCT has added a new and exciting element to the 2018 production of “Annie” that they believe will make the production even better than the first. Scene projections will be included in the performance. Scene projections act as a digital backdrop on stage. Some things haven’t changed from the Annie production nine years ago. Several actors from the first are back for the second production, as well. A member who played an orphan nine years ago is now all grown up and plays more than seven rolls in the 2018 show. This production also includes the same Daddy Warbucks and Roosevelt as in the past production. Nine years ago, Annie brought 2,600 spectators to see the show. This year, the Fremont Civic Theatre’s goal is to perform Annie to 3,000 people. The cast of Annie this year contains 51 people and one dog. The actors and actresses range from 5 years old to 83 years old and are from across Fremont County. The role of “Annie” is played by Phoenix Brooks, 10, alternating with Nellie Termeer. The young “Annie” star said she is excited about this year’s musical. “I really enjoy everything,” Brooks said. “This is my first time acting on stage. It’s a privilege to work with all these amazing performers. It’s so much fun. I definitely want to do it again.” The performances of “Annie” will be at 7 p.m. Sept.

“Elections Matter 2018” – Information for an Informed Vote in House District 60 From: Representative Jim Wilson September 16, 2018 Welcome to “Elections Matter 2018”. As many of you are aware, during the past legislative sessions, I authored a weekly informational column called “Takin’ It To The House…” that was published in newspapers across HD 60. The purpose of the column has been to inform the voters of HD 60 about what was happening in the State Legislature on a weekly basis. (Something I believe an elected official should do for his/her constituents.) “Elections Matter 2018” is similar in that it is designed to inform the voters about the upcoming election. Unless you have been experiencing a bout with “Rip Van Winkle’s Syndrome”, you are aware that this is an election season. The 2018 Primary Election is already far back in the rear view mirror. According to a past headline in the Fort Collins Coloradoan: “Colorado’s primary election turnout breaks record – even without unaffiliated voters”. The record number?... approximately one third of the state’s electorate! To me (a government teacher in a former lifetime), the fact that 2 out of 3 eligible voters did not participate in the primary is embarrassing! The slate of candidates for the General Election was determined by a record-setting MINORITY of eligible voters. Other countries around the world would love to have the opportunity to vote in a free and transparent election. Yet, here in America, the minority determines the candidates that the majority complains about. What is wrong with that picture? In Colorado, all 65 seats in the House are up for election. It is guaranteed that there will be at least 21 new faces for the next session – not including any incumbent upsets! In addition to all the House Districts, 17 Senate seats are up for grabs as well – at least 8 of those will be new faces. Barring a MAJOR miracle, the House will retain a Democrat majority (last year the House had 36 D’s and 29 R’s). The real battle in this election will be for control of the Senate. Last session, the Senate was 18-17 Republican – that makes for a “Battle Royale” over each and every vacant Senate seat. Add in the Governor’s race -- between two diametrically opposed “no moderate here” candidates, a myriad of state ballot questions, additional

elected positions and all the other issues, the ballot is rumored to be 4 pages in length! You might want to lay in a supply of coffee and snacks to help you fill out your ballot this year… Unfortunately, too much of the conversation around the 2018 elections is about President Trump and the 2016 election. I understand the “Blue Wave – Red Wave” debates, and each of you is entitled to weigh in on the federal level races that are on the ballot. However, this column will focus upon the state of Colorado in general, and specifically House District 60. It is often said, “All politics are local.” I believe that the closer you stay to the people, the more successful you will be as an elected official. With the mail-in ballots scheduled to go out on October 15th, the 2018 election will be upon us before we know it. Instead of publishing ads with bullet points about what I stand for and what I intend to do if elected, this column will focus on actual accomplishments – “Proven Leadership” if you will. The road to elected office is paved with good intentions – for those of us that are incumbents, the key is what we are accomplishing during our time in office. During the coming weeks leading up to the election, I will use this column to recap successful legislation in the 4 areas of my platform, as well as sharing planned legislation for the next session. In addition, I will keep you updated on the progress of my Interim Committees and proposed legislation. Those Interim Committees include: Opioid & Other Substance Use Disorders Study Committee, Education Leadership Council, Early Childhood & School Readiness Legislative Commission and the School Start Time Study Committee. Other issues that have directly benefited HD 60 will be addressed as well.
