Annabelle Berry

July 10, 1925 ~ August 15, 2018 Annabelle (Erps) Berry, beloved mother and grandmother, passed away on August 15, 2018. She was born July 10, 1925, in Westcliffe, Colorado to Louis and Anna Erps. Annabelle lived a full and happy life, enjoying camping and fishing as well as many trips to Cripple Creek. She enjoyed making pies for her grandson Richard for 4-H to sell for fundraisers. She is survived by daughter, Linda (Eugene) Valdez, and step-daughter, Tanya White; grandchildren, Richard, Noah, and Ruby; brother, Walter Erps; sister-in-law, Eugenia Erps; along with several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in

death by her husband's, George Berry and Lewis White; step-son, Bill (Diane) White; Siblings, Earl (Dorothy) Erps, Dale Erps, Betty (Fred) Perse, Ruth (Gerald) Grimm, Mae (Nelsen) Berry; and niece, Edna Killian. John "Jack" Leo Crosby December 7, 1930 ~ August 12, 2018

Husband, father, pastor, and friend, Jack Crosby left to see heaven for himself on Sunday, Aug 12th at the age of 87 1/2. Jack was born to Roy and Pauline (Brickle) Crosby in Canon City on Dec 7, 1930. As a teen he worked in his parent's bakery (The Tasty Pastry Bakery), graduated from Canon High with the famous '49ers, then went to Colorado A & M (now CSU) to play football and study. On his way home from a summer job, he heard on the radio that the Korean War had started, so he stopped in Pueblo and enlisted in the Marines. Upon finishing his tour of duty, Jack came home to an arranged blind date. Sometimes those things do work out, and he married the love of his life, Joan Schmotzer, on June 14, 1953. They were married for 62 years:

she preceded him in death June 2015. During their life together, they had four children,Paul, Katy, Terri, and John and served together in ministry in Kim, Oklahoma City, Rangely, Thornton, and Canon City. A Joyful Celebration of this remarkable life, together with an Ice Cream Social in his honor, will be held at the Vineyard in Canon City on August 25, 2018 at 1:00 pm. (245 S. Raynolds). The family plans to place a bench and playground equipment for the community in honor of Jack and Joan's life. Dorothy Ruth "Tiny" Striegel October 7, 1921 ~ August 17, 2018

Dorothy Ruth "Tiny" Striegel, 96, passed away August 17, 2018. Born on October 7, 1921 in Hutchinson, Kansas to Lester W. Huston and Eloise (nee' Wells) Huston, Dorothy was a precious gift to the world. A very bright student, she graduated from Canon City High School in 1938 and then went on to study medicine in St. Louis, Missouri. She would later become a registered LPN, an X-ray technician (ARRT) as well as a laboratory technician. Dorothy would work at the side of a Dr. J.C. Hurliman at the Colorado Hospital for some 27 years before she retired. During her life she also continued helping the Pueblo Community College as well as Oklahoma State University. She generously donated the Oklahoma Geology Field Camp to the Oklahoma State campus at Stillwater in 1990 where she was recently awarded, an honorary membership as an OSU alumni. A very talented and self-taught artist, Dorothy painted portraits of seven well known citizens that are on permanent display at the Royal Gorge Museum and Historical center. In addition to her artistic talent she was gifted with the written word and with five books on poetry and history. In April of this year

she was added to the Fremont Hall of Fame by the people of Fremont and Custer counties for her extraordinary effort in bettering the local communities. Tiny was a member of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Chruch, VFW Auxiliary # 4061. Tiny will be greatly missed by us all. She is survived by step-daughters, Anita F. Striegel and Suzanne Hobson, both of Mission, Kansas; nephew, Harold D. (Pam) Bonewell; great niece, Dana (Randy) Nelson; special cousins, Wendy (Dale) Engeman, and Kevin Koenig; special nephew, Jack (Gloria) Dozier; along with many personal close friends. She was preceded in death by, both parents; sister, Marie C. DeWolf; and brother-in-law, Claude DeWolf. Tiny was also preceded in death by her first husband, John Theodore Gaines; and second husband, Ervin H. Striegel. Christopher Hartman graduates from Air Force basic training U.S. Air Force Airman 1st Class Christopher P. Hartman graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas. The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical ﬁtness, and basic warfare principles and skills. Christopher Hartman Airmen who complete basic training also earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force. He earned an associate degree in 2014 from Pueblo Community College-Fremont Campus in Cañon City.

Abbey Winery maintains increased grape payments with early start to harvest

Jeff Stultz, the winemaker for The Winery at Holy Cross Abbey, will begin accepting the ﬁrst grapes from the 2018 grape crop in the Fremont County and surrounding areas Sept. 4. Hours for grape deliveries are 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Monday through Saturday. The winery will receive grapes through the month of September. The number to call to arrange an alternate delivery time, inquire about ripeness or ask questions about pests is 719-276-5191, ext. 17. No unripe or rotten grapes will be accepted. The growers will be paid $0.50 per pound, or $1,000 per ton, to encourage as much participation as

possible, owner Larry Oddo said. Growers are requested to bring in a sample of 15-20 grapes, to have their sugars tested before harvesting. The crew will be available to check the sugars from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. The grape samples should be is a zip lock baggie with your name and phone number on the bag. The samples can be left at the tasting room. Most of the fruit coming in will be used to produce the Wild Cañon Harvest. The success of this local wine can be attributed to the local involvement that goes into it.

Cañon Literacy Center celebrates 10-year milestone

For two hours a week, oneon-one attention is given to each child enrolled in the Cañon Literacy Center’s tutoring program, which in the past 10 years has had significant impacts on the students. The CLC is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, which includes 220 tutors who have volunteered their time, 345 students in first through ninth grade and an assessment team of retired educators who conduct the pre- and post-tests. Volunteers have given more than 26,000 hours of individual instruction and assessments. Based on the “Estimated National Value of Each Volunteer Hour,” that equates to nearly $650,000 in volunteer time. The center meets in the fellowship hall located next to the First United Methodist Church, where it has operated the last 10 years, at no charge to the center, nor the families. “We owe such a debt to the First United Methodist Church,” said Katherine Cook, a CLC board member. FUMC’s former pastor, Don Bird, first pitched the idea of the church doing some type of a community service project 11 years ago, and a survey overwhelmingly revealed that parishioners wished to do something that would benefit children. “We formed a smaller committee, and we looked into several things,” said Eileen Lakey, a retired school teacher, who serves as the CLC’s director and Cañon

Dunn, a mortgage banker, said she doesn’t have a teaching background, but the scripted curriculum is user-friendly. “Once you make that connection with the kids, you won’t mess up,” she said. This standing is good for one year and must be garnered anew each year by demonstrating risk management that is routinely practiced by the entire staff. “Not only does this save the ice cream shop money, it also teaches staff best safety practices in all areas of what we do,” Fry said. “We deal with temperature shock, sharp equipment, hot equipment, cross contamination, cleaning chemicals and potential slip and fall situations.” Cup and Cone offers new hires formalized training, which includes safety practices. “When an employee has completed the training I offer, they can make working at the shop look easy, but they know and assist with the hard work behind the scenes that our customers don’t see,” Fry said. “I am proud of every single employee I have

had at the shop. That numbers over 50 young people in the past six years.” Fry is not just a business owner, she is also an employer and creates eight to 10 jobs each year for local youth and trains them in what many times is their ﬁrst job. Fry’s business model is to offer grounding in powerful customer service and show it is possible to succeed as a micro-business owner in a difﬁcult economy. “I hope to ignite the entrepreneurial spirit in these young people. I owe much of my success so far to the support I’ve gotten through Colorado Enterprise Fund,” Fry said. “The extensive business coaching by their experts in building small business and the funding customized to my seasonal needs has been a real tipping point for me.
