Sandra L. Luders

December 17, 1935 - July 7, 2019

Sandra went to her final home in Heaven July 7th, 2019. Sandra was born in Greensburg Kansas, December 17th, 1935. She married Donald Clayton Luders on April 10th, 1955 and he proceeded her in death on April 15th, 1981. She is survived by their six children, Eric, Lisa, Stephanie, Michelle, Aaron and Angela. She is also survived by her brother, Steven Gilham; 16 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. She moved to Canon City in May of 2012 and attended Solid Rock Christian Fellowship

since. One of her biggest pleasures in life was to make friends with everyone she met, she was called the "Welcome Wagon" at the building she lived in. Her favorite saying was "To Blessed To Be Stressed". Sandra followed the Lord and Psalms 23 was one of her favorite scriptures. A memorial service will be held at Solid Rock, 4501 Bear Paw Drive, Florence, Colorado on July 20th, 2019, 1PM. The family requests that you wear some form of purple as this was her favorite color.

Jehnell Giganti

November 28, 1955 ~ July 12, 2019 Jehnell Giganti went to be with her Master July 12th, 2019 in Canon City, CO. She succumbed to a short and aggressive battle with cancer, she was surrounded by her family and holding the hand of her one true love, Joseph Giganti. Jehnell was born in Decatur, IL, November 28, 1955 to Jessie and Vera (Sherfick) Bryan. Jehnell was a kind and giving soul, which was evident throughout her life. She graduated from Illinois State University with a degree in social work. After college she joined AmeriCorps where she worked with Native Americans in northern AZ. Jehnell had a natural ability to help anyone in need which she used often in her work first in child protective services and then as adult protective services for the Department of Human Services. Jehnell finally went on to make the brave choice of starting her own elder care company, in which she was incredibly successful. When Jehnell and Joe retired, they sold their home, bought an RV and traveled the US. They were able to reconnect with one another while visiting some of the most wonderful places in America such as Yellowstone National Park, Heartland TN, Portland Maine and everything in between. They also took their only grandson, Owen, on unforgettable summer trips to places like San Diego and the World Trade Center. Jehnell was very active in the church as well

and her faith shone through all that she did. She was part of the E-free church elders committee as a deaconess. She also loved her children as well as everyone else's; volunteering countless hours to Girl Scouts of America and her daughter's school PTA's. Anyone who met her fell instantly in love with her faithful, loving and warmhearted nature. Jehnell and her husband moved to Canon City in 1992 and she found herself right at home in this small community. Jehnell was preceded in death by her parents, Jessie and Vera Bryan; her sister, Susan Nist and brother, James Bryan. She is survived by her loving husband of 35 years, Joseph Giganti, daughters, Amanda Giganti, Diana Wheat, grandson Own Wheat, sister-in-law Marcia Bryan and brother Robert Bryan. She is also loved and survived by numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service will be held at 2pm, Saturday, July 20, 2019 at the Evangelical Free Church, 3000 E Main St, Canon City, CO. William Cecil Holt Jr. "Bill" May 22, 1938 ~ July 15, 2019

We said goodbye to Bill Holt--husband, father, grandfather, brother, friend, and our mentor and patriarch-on July 15, 2019, in Colorado Springs, Colorado. William Cecil Holt Jr. "Bill", was born May 22, 1938, in Pueblo, Co. He was the first-born son of William Cecil and Grace Elizabeth Holt. His childhood was spent in Cañon City and Florence, Co. where he took pleasure in being with his grandparents, Cecil and Evelyn Holt, who lived above the Florence Funeral Home. He graduated from Cañon City High School in 1956. After high school, he attended and graduated from the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, with a Bachelors Degree in Business. While still undertaking his studies, Bill was united in marriage to Bonnie Dee Lester, daughter of Golden and Violet Lester, on October 12, 1958, in Cañon City Co.-- a marriage that lasted 61 years. Bill and Bonnie moved to Dallas, Texas, where Bill attended the Dallas Institute of Mortuary Science. After his graduation Bill and Bonnie returned to Cañon City where Bill joined his father William at Holt Funeral Home, becoming the third generation to enter the business. At age 28, Bill adopted the whole of the family business after the retirement of his father. Together, Bill and Bonnie served diligently the families and the community that they loved. His legacy continues to grow through fourth and fifth generation children and grandchildren. His children, grandchildren, and multiple gracious employees continue to care for families at: Florence Mortuary in Florence, Farnum-Holt Funeral Home in Glenwood Springs, Rifle Funeral Home in Rifle, Evergreen and Blunt Funeral Homes in Colorado Springs, Boies-Ortega Funeral Home in Walsenburg, and Funeral and Cremation Care in Pueblo West. Bill and Bonnie enjoyed many things in life together: golf, skiing, travelling, dancing, dinner clubs,

and stays at the Gunnison campground with friends and family. They were active members at the First Baptist Church and Cañon Community Baptist Church. Bill was also an avid fisherman and hunter and enjoyed golf tournaments and hunting trips with his son Trey and many friends. Bill was deputy coroner for Fremont County for forty years, serving under Dr. Henry Grabow and Dr. Dorothy Twellman. He had a commercial pilots license where he flew an Air Charter service transporting for funeral homes, the Colorado Department of Corrections, and even some celebrities. Bill was a member of the Civil Air Patrol, Aircraft Owner Pilot's Association, and the Palm Springs World War Two Air Museum. He was also a lifetime member of the Elks and a member of the National Guard. Bill especially loved his coffee group and the Rotary Club and all of his friends there. Bill is survived by his wife Bonnie of Cañon City, daughter Beth Madone of Cañon City, son Trey Holt of Glenwood Springs, grandchildren Brooke (Caleb) Petersen of Florence, Blake Madone of Colorado Springs, Jared Holt of Cañon City, Jacob Holt of Byers, Brother David D. (Linda) Holt of Cañon City, sister in-law Lu McKee of Cañon City, and numerous treasured nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, son-in-law Rod Madone, brother-in law Bill McKee, and brother and sister-in-law Bennie and Donna Roberts. A visitation will be held Thursday, July 18, from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at Holt Family Funeral Home. Funeral service is Friday, July 19, at 11:00 am at Cañon Community Baptist Church, 1111 Monroe, Cañon City. Entombment: Mountain Vale Cemetery. Cañon City Police Department K9 team receives donated K9 first aid supplies

Cañon City Police Officer Greg Nish and his K9 partner, Boot, recently received a Buddy Bag from the K9 Defender Fund. This organization donates 10 bags a month to military, police, fire, and search and rescue teams. Kenneth L. Hargrave, Jr. May 8, 1940 ~ July 8, 2019

Kenneth L Hargrave, Jr, 79 of Canon City, CO passed away on July 8, 2019 after a lengthy battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Janette and

three children, Donna Martin, Kenny Hargrave and Mark Hargrave. A Celebration of Life is planned for a future date.

Their experiences in what was called the “war to end all wars” would shape an enduring agenda for what became the nation’s largest organization of veterans. The American Legion was chartered and incorporated by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans organization devoted to mutual helpfulness. As of today, there are nearly 2 million members of The American Legion, making it the nation’s largest wartime veterans service organization. A Dream Fulfilled: Florence woman reunited with her birth family after nearly 85 years Carie Canterbury The Daily Record

FLORENCE — Phyllis Egland prayed for her birth mother her entire life, and earlier this year — just months before her 85th birthday — Egland learned that her mother had been praying for her, too. With the help of her daughter, Chris Egland, some DNA testing, Internet research and the use of Facebook, Egland found her birth family earlier this year. “I just believe that God wanted us to know one another,” Egland said. “It has been such a huge blessing, and they say the same thing.” Originally named “Betty Jean” at birth, Egland was given up for adoption when she was just six weeks old. Her mother, Winifred Richards, had become pregnant at the age of 19. Phyllis’ father’s family was not happy with the match and encouraged him to leave the relationship, but Richards had her baby and planned to raise her by herself. Richards’ family was poor, and it was during the Great Depression when her parents sent her away to Ann Arbor, Mich., to work at a boarding house at the age of 15, basically to fend for herself. “She was living there and working there when she became pregnant with me,” Egland said. “After her mother found out that she had a baby, her mother and her sister came to visit with adoption papers in hand, took me away from her and forced her to sign the adoption papers. It broke her heart. The rest of her life, she just pined and pined for me. They never could find me.” Winifred Richards died at the age of 83 on July 3, 1997, which happens to be Egland’s birthday. “Her heart was so broken that she lost me, she always wanted to find me,” Egland said. “All these years I prayed for my mother, and when I talked to my niece, she said, ‘she prayed for you every day of her life.’” Richards’ name was on the adoption papers that Egland’s adoptive parents had possession of, but her mother’s date of birth and the father’s name were not listed. “When I wanted to find her, I

she also had had a half brother, Garry Lee Whitaker, who was born to Richards 17 months after her birth. He was told about “Betty Jean” as a child and tried hard to find his sister for his mother. After his death in 2006, his four children continued the search. Meanwhile, halfway across the country, Egland bought her daughters and herself Ancestry DNA test kits for Christmas in 2017. In October 2018, they received an email from Ancestry claiming there were other DNA matches. Chris Egland searched the list of names and found the surname “Richards.” She sent a message to the person listed, who had more than 300 people in their family tree, hoping to find a familial connection. She wrote back, responding that this was a “dream fulfilled.” The families met for the first time in March when they gathered in Florida, traveling from Michigan, Colorado and South Carolina during spring break. They met again at Egland’s home July 5-8 in Florence to celebrate her 85th birthday. “It was extremely emotional and such a blessing,” Phyllis said about her initial meeting with her new family members. “You could just feel the love.
