Antoinette Butler

November 6, 1922 - April 27, 2019 Toni(Antoinett e) Butler, age 96 died peacefully on Saturday, April 27th, 2019, at the Villas at Sunny Acres. Toni was born on November 6, 1922 to Vincenza and Dominic Senatore. She grew up in Florence Colorado and then moved to Denver. She married Dave Butler in 1954, who preceded her in death in 1995. Toni and Dave owned and operated the Terminex Business in Denver for many years before retiring. They were then able to travel extensively. She was active in the Business and Professional Women's Club eventually becoming State President of that organization. She was also involved in many charity and community volunteer organizations throughout her life such as Volunteers of America and Mount St. Vincent's Guild. Toni loved to sing and she participated in many choirs over her lifetime. She would often break into song at family events. She had a great love for her family and her Italian heritage. Those who loved her will never forget her classy, warm, and funny personality. She was the

life of family gatherings and she was admired for her sense of style, always wearing red(her favorite color) with lots of bling. She is survived by her loving nieces and nephews, Phyllis Newton(Richard), Joanna Senatore(Dennis), Jilda Senatore(Tim), Andy Senatore, Heidi Thomas(Lance), Steve Senatore, and Ron Alliger(Marggie), as well as stepchildren Kartha Verduzco(Alfonso) and Chris Butler(Carol). She is also survived by many cousins, grandstepchildren, and family members who she loved and touched deeply. Funeral Mass will be held at 9:30 on Friday May 3, 2019 at St Mark's Catholic Church, 3141 W. 96th Ave., Westminister, CO 80031. Burial will follow in Lakeside Cemetery, Canon City, CO. May 1, 1961 - May 2, 2019 A memorial service for longtime McClave resident, Cary J. Robb, will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, May 11, 2019 at the McClave United Methodist Church in McClave, CO. Jim Schleining and John Sykes will co-officiate the service. Per Cary's request cremation has taken place and there will be no public visitation. Cary was born on May 1, 1961 in Canon City, CO to Thomas Fred Robb and Virgie Loueen Braly-Robb and departed this life unexpectedly on Thursday May 2, 2019 at his home in McClave at the age of 58. Cary was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents. Cary is survived by his wife - Patti Robb of McClave; two children Chris Robb of Panama

City, FL; and T.J. (Amy) Robb of Florence, CO; six grandchildren; parents - Tom and Virgie Robb of McClave; one brother - Keith (Chi) Robb of Farwell, TX; one niece - Reece Robb; one cousin Theresa (Keith) Garcia of Las Animas, CO; and brother-in-law - Randy (Dodie) Robertson of Colorado Springs, CO; as well as by many friends. Charles "Chow" Picco 1933 ~ 2019

Charles "Chow" Picco was born in late August, 1933 to John and Minnie Picco. He was the second youngest of six children. He grew up in Rockvale and attended Florence High School (graduating Class of 1952). After high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served overseas as part of the Allied Occupational Forces following World War II. After his tour, he attended CSU in Pueblo, where he met and married his first wife. They had a daughter together (Kim), and soon moved to Gunnison, where he received his Bachelor's in business administration in 1959. He obtained his Master's in Education from Western in 1965. He moved back to Fremont County and began teaching in Penrose as an English teacher. There, he met and married his second wife and had a son, Michael, in late 1968. Although he started his career in the classroom, Chow's business background helped him to become Principal for the junior high school in Florence. He spent over thirty years in the position, and would often remark that he had taught three generations of Fremont County residents during his tenure.

Chow retired from the position in the late 1990s, and spent his retirement traveling (to Italy and to Mexico most notably). He was a fervent Bronco and Rockies fan and never missed a game. In his final years, he found great comfort and joy in the company of his grandchildren, the fellowship he found at Shepherd of the Hills, and in his many outings with his companion, Velma Jean. He passed away peacefully on April 28th after a long illness. Chow is survived by his sister, Cathy Dell and his brother Jim; his son, Michael and his step-daughter, Stephanie Herder. He was preceded in death by his brother, John and his sister, Phyllis; and daughter, Kim McDougall. St. Thomas More offers coping strategies in grief, loss and life transitions St. Thomas More Hospital’s Grief and Loss Support Program addresses the difficulty of loss and grief many individuals face after the death of a loved one. To support individuals in understanding and coping with personal phases of loss, professionals from the spiritual care department are offering a 12-week grief, loss and life transition support group every Tuesday from May 14 through July 30, 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the Benedictine Room at STM. Deacon Marco Vegas, Manager of Mission Integration, and co-facilitator Jan Sciortino lead the support program. Both Deacon Vegas and Sciortino have been trained and received certification from Alan Wolfelt, PhD, a nationally recognized author, educator and grief counselor. STM’s grief, loss and life transition support program is centered on Dr. Wolfelt’s idea of ‘companioning’, where individuals journey together, versus the model of ‘treating’, which consists of pulling an individual through their grief. Participants are encouraged to find support in others, rather than grieving alone. In a welcoming and confidential environment, participants will learn to reconcile through finding newness and continued meaning in life. The program offers reassurance and support with materials based on Dr. Wolfelt’s text, “Understanding your Grief: Ten Essential Touchstones” and “Understanding your Grief Journal.” “We recognize the difficulty of losing a loved one and hope to reassure individuals to seek help in our compassionate program,” said Deacon Vegas. “This program offers the ability for participants to come together to help each other overcome their losses not only personally, but on a collective level as well.” The program is open to 12 members per group and participants are expected to attend each session, as the content of each class builds onto the last. Potential members will meet with Deacon Vegas for a registration screening to determine if the grief, loss and life transition support program is an appropriate next step. Colorado Department of Corrections to restore access to greeting cards Effective May 1, the Colorado Department of Corrections will once again permit incarcerated individuals to receive original greeting cards, postcards and drawings pursuant to a resolution reached between Tiffany McCoy, who is currently incarcerated at the Denver Women’s Correctional Facility, and the CDOC. Last year, in an effort to reduce drugs entering CDOC prisons through the mail, the agency banned original greeting cards and similar items and, instead, provided individuals with black-and-white photocopies of these items. McCoy believed the copies were a poor substitute for an essential and

unique form of communication; to her, never experiencing the cards’ colors or holding an item her loved ones touched stripped the copies of much of their value. She sought help with this concern through her student attorneys at the University of Denver Sturm College of Law Civil Rights Clinic. The clinic wrote to Dean Williams, the Executive Director of CDOC, suggesting that McCoy, the CRC, and CDOC work together to address these concerns . Williams and the CDOC welcomed the opportunity to have meaningful dialogue on the issue. During the discussions that followed,

CRC student attorneys expressed McCoy’s concerns about the policy’s impact on prisoners’ morale, as well as her right to free speech. For McCoy, the policy was a major barrier to maintaining her ties to her family, who she relies on for support in prison and will rely on for help when she is released. CDOC conveyed its concerns about the illegal introduction of drugs into facilities and expressed a desire to work toward a mutually agreeable solution wherein introduction of drugs was reduced and incarcerated individuals were able to enjoy the unique experience of a painting from a child or loved one.

St. Thomas More offers free sports physicals St. Thomas More Hospital (Physician Group and Outpatient Rehabilitation) will offer free sports physicals for middle and high school athletes from 1 to 6 p.m. June 19 with the last appointment time at 5:20 p.m. The physicals will be at the STM Medical Office Building located at 1338 Phay Avenue, Building D. “Our experts offer free sports physicals to our local student athletes so they can continue to stay active,” said Tim Andrews, Manager of Rehab Services. “It also provides them with the opportunity to learn about sports safety and injury prevention. It’s a great community outreach event that allows us to interact with our local youth and take the financial burden of a sports physical off of parents and guardians.” The physicals are made up of two sessions, both completed during the visit. The first session is the sports physical, provided by STM Physician Group. This fulfills the physical exam required by the schools. The second session is a sports readiness assessment, provided by STM Orthopedics and Rehabilitation Services. This session is comprised of musculoskeletal dysfunction, flexibility, muscle imbalance and agility as well as a demonstration and participation in injury prevention exercises. Students will also receive recommendations for safe sports during this session. Appointments are limited and scheduled on a first call basis. Call 719-285-2011 to schedule an appointment. Council OKs ordinance prohibiting boarded-up windows in non-residential buildings

The Cañon City Council on Monday approved the second reading of an ordinance that revises portions of the city’s municipal code, but the new prohibition of boarded-up windows in non-residential buildings was a sticking point for a local couple. City Attorney Corey Hoffmann said the big picture of the Title 8 revision was to put the city’s entire code enforcement, nuisance, abatement processes into one consistent place. “There were a number of locations of the municipal code, some of which could be construed as being conﬂicting, that have been developed over the years,” he said. “This is to make one comprehensive integrated code and to address it.” Local residents and property owners Ron and Sheila Kimmell felt one item in the ordinance was crafted to target them. The couple purchased the building at Fourth and Main streets in 2007, investing their retirement savings into cleaning up the building, which was a “hotbed” of drugs, theft rings, gang activities, homeless hangouts, vandalism and crime in general, Ron Kimmell said. He said they began working on the ground-level apartment in April 2012, which was allowed at the time. He said the code was changed to allow only above-ground apartments in the Central Business District in December of that year, and ﬁve years later,

The couple then decided to board up their windows for a number of reasons, he said, including to safeguard their building and tenants and the community; the threats already made by the city to board up the vacant St. Scholastica citing safety concerns due to vandalism; and “the political agenda being waged against us.” Ron Kimmell said after they boarded up their windows, the city requested

Kristi Olson named St. Thomas More Hospital CEO

Centura Health and the St. Thomas More Hospital Board of Directors have named Kristi Olson as its new Chief Executive Ofﬁcer at St. Thomas More Hospital. The hospital made the announcement in a press release Wednesday morning. Olson replaces Sheri Trahern, who left the hospital in January and spent her entire career with Centura Health, having served in various roles since her start as a junior accountant at St. Joseph Hospital in 1986. St. Thomas More touted Olson as a “proven health care leader with more than 20 years’ experience in health care admin-

istration and operations.” She has served as the Interim CEO for STM since January 2019. “During this period of transition, she provided outstanding leadership and direction while focusing efforts on patient experience and whole person care,” the press release stated. “Olson has also proven herself true to her mission – to lead with love.” Olson stated that the past four months have been incredible for her. “This is such a warm and giving community,” she said. “St. Thomas More
