Prospect Heights Jail opens for summer The Prospects Heights Jail will be open to the public on Saturday afternoons through Oct. 15. Fremont County Historical Society President Carol McNew said FCHS members will host the public open houses on Saturdays from 1-4 p.m. and provide information on the building. The building is designated a historic landmark by the Fremont County Heritage Commission and is listed on the Colorado Register of Historic Places. Located at 1315 S. Fourth St., the jail was built in 1906 to hold drunk and disorderly patrons from numerous Prospect Heights saloons. The Town of Prospect Heights had been incorporated in 1905 as a “wet” town in response to Cañon City prohibiting the sale of alcohol. Area miners, smelter workers and others involved in around the clock shift work wanted a beer after their shift and Prospect Heights became one of the places they could go. The 1916 closing of mines and smelters and the coming of prohibition caused the saloons’ customer base to dwindle, according to a 2014 Historic Structure Assessment (HSA) of the building by The Preservation Studio. The FCHS has invested almost $22,000 in the jail in the past seven years. This maintenance and upkeep was neglected for many, many years after it closed permanently in 1916. The interior is still in the condition it was received with the exception of a dividing wall that was replaced due to safety reason, and most visitors agree it should be left as it is. “We are very proud of our historic structure - part of the coal mining, smeltering, and geologic story of Fremont County,” McNew said. Prospect Heights is featured in the Guide Book - Coal Camps of Fremont County, available in several retail outlets and from any member of FCHS.

Sandra "Sandy" Arlene Colon February 4, 1946 ~ April 28, 2019

Sandra "Sandy" Arlene Colon went to be with the Lord on Sunday, April 28, 2019 at the age of 73. Sandy was born on February 4, 1946 in Garden City, Kansas. She met the love of her life, Charles "Chuck" Arvid Colon, Jr. in Canon City in 1962. Sandy left Canon City and moved back to Garden City with her brother and Chuck followed her. They married in Garden City on June 1, 1963 then returned to the Canon City area during the 1963 deer hunting season and have lived here ever since. Sandy was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church and at one time served as the Office Manager. She was a member of The Daughters of Isabella, The Secular Franciscan Order, The 4-Mile Community Club, The Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary and The Veteran Motor Car Club of America. She enjoyed crocheting and needlework as well as playing games with her grandkids. Her favorite pastime was researching the history of both sides of the family and spent countless hours at libraries and with many relatives to trace and document her findings. Sandy has two grandchildren from her oldest son, Charles "Chuck" Arvid Colon, III (1966) who married Lorie Ann Simpson: Charles "Chip" Arvid, IV (1995) and Leah Ray (1998). Sandy also has two granddaughters from her youngest son, Craig Allan Colon (1967): Hallie Mae

(2007) and Linnea Jewel (2008). Hallie remembers that Grandma "Was always there for us and she is very pretty and really nice and always helped us out a lot. She was an amazing Grandma and I will love her forever!" Linnea says that "Grandma was a lovely lady that was always there to make me feel better and to make me laugh. I will miss playing games with Grandma - I love her so much!" Sandy is survived by her brothers, Mack Thomas of Amarillo, Texas, John Thomas of Elk City, Oklahoma and Jimmy Stout of Denver, Colorado; and by her youngest sister Donna Huff of El Toro, California; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Sandy was preceded in death by the love of her life Chuck (2012) and she looks forward to being with him for eternity. Sandy was also preceded in death by her parents, Mack and Angela Irene (Herrman) Thomas; and her oldest sister, Elsie (Thomas) Jacobs. Sondra Elaine (Mattice) (Jarrett) Rowe May 1, 1943 - March 26, 2019 Sondra Elaine Rowe, age 75 passed away on March 26, 2019. Sondra was born to Eugene & Lueva Mattice on May 1, 1943 and was #7 of 11 children, but the first child to be born in a hospital (The Colorado Hospital of Canon City) at 10:41 AM during the “Blossom Festival.” She grew up in Florence, Colorado and shared a single room with all her sisters (two to a bunk). Sondra accidently drank Lye as a toddler and would spend most of her childhood in hospitals and traveling back and forth to the Denver Children’s Hospital where they reconstructed her throat over the years. She suffered a learning disability as of the result of countless (over 40) surgeries and the effects of the anesthesia known as ether. Nevertheless, she was strong willed, free-spirited and nothing would hold her back, she struggled and fought and endured and was able to earn her 8th grade diploma! She then stayed home and helped mom and dad around the very busy household, watched her nieces & nephews as she absolutely loved babies and little kids. She eventually befriended “The Boy Next Door”, Willis (Bill) Alan Jarrett who found her to be quite eccentric and attractive and became the “The Apple of his Eye.” The two were united in marriage on June 1, 1962 in Florence, Colorado and would make their first home in Englewood, Colorado so that Bill could continue his college studies. They soon brought their first daughter, Ruth Ann, into the world in 1963 and they then had their hands full with college, work and a new baby. They struggled and worked through it and were very happy together. She and Bill left Colorado in 1967 and went to Plano, Texas for a few years so he could work for Texas Instruments. While down in Texas, Sondra would give birth to a dark haired beauty of a girl named Crystal Jean in 1969. After experiencing the destruction of a Texas Tornado, they soon decided that Texas life was not for them and returned to their beloved home of Colorado in late 1969 where they spent several years in Canon City, CO together. In 1976, Sondra & Bill grew apart and went their separate ways. She very soon after met an older fella, Richard V. Rowe, who treated her like a princess and they fell in love. He was there for her during her hardship of losing her two daughters in a nasty divorce case, and taught her many things about life and love and encouraged her to be strong and to give to others to make her happy in her heart again! They united in marriage in February 1978, residing in Rocky Ford, Colorado for a few years then living off the land in Rosita, Colorado for a short time before making their home in Canon City, CO. They lived a simple life with not a lot of money, pinched pennies and always donated money or time to their church and always gave to the needy, and always had grandchildren around. Richard passed away in August 1991 leaving Sondra to fend for herself and to learn how to manage a household and expenses on her own. She learned how to become an independent woman! And would remain a single independent woman until her death. She really enjoyed walking and would be seen by many on her way to the grocery store or just to go Volunteer time at Loaves and Fishes or to go hand out Commodities for the needy every month. She would be seen occasionally with the wagon and grandkids in tow. She never was able to get a driver’s license, had a fear of cars after

driving off a cliff trying to learn how to drive, so never had a desire to drive one. One day she went downtown and bought a ride on lawn mower and had it delivered and learned how to operate it and enjoyed cutting the weeds with it and that was about as fast as she could handle. She even got comfortable enough to drive her mower down to the quick stop to get some milk and eggs with a grandkid or two on board and occasionally go visit the fireman down on the corner, until she got caught and told she can’t drive her mower on the streets! She enjoyed crocheting, quilting, be crafty or just coloring in her color books, loved watching children, and loved going to church for her social time. She was so very proud of her Cherokee Indian heritage and would often brag to others or tell her offspring that they had “Injun in them.” She was an ornery gal at times, and loved to pick and tease and give big hugs and rouse everyone and was overly friendly with strangers at times, she loved people. She had cute little nicknames for all her kids, grandkids, nieces, nephews, and sisters such as Punkin, TuttiFrutti, Jumpin Bean, Peanut, Bean Pole, Shorty, String Bean, Ornery, Rosie, and many more. Sondra was not only known for her Giving Heart, Super Strong Bear Hugs, Wonderful Smile, Courageous Soul, Crafty Mind and Hands, but she was also known for her Unbelievable Will to Live and Loved life itself! She Endured the burned throat as a child and the setbacks it created, she was use to a lower quality of life because of it, it became a part of her normal life and that is what made her strong enough to get through the tough times of life and especially the last few years suffering from 3 unrelated Cancers and beating them, a punctured esophagus from a careless doctor, radiation wounds, and riding out Hepatitis B, that she apparently contracted from a blood transfusion, to the very end. It was like God was putting her to the ultimate test, the testing was relentless, and She just kept fighting back like a “Wounded Warrior” that had no sense of ever giving up, it was not in her language or in her comprehension! Then he finally gave in and came and took her from us here on earth and now she is one of his Best Angels, she finally made it! She was preceded in death and will be joining in heaven; her Parents, and husbands, her only brother; Donald Mattice, sisters; JoAnn Thomas, Marion Lennox, Carol Metzger, Dora Owens, Alice Mattice, and Sheila Mattice. She will be missed by the ones here on Earth; Sisters; Janet Jackson of Canon City, Sharon Wade of Florida and Gleans Orcutt of Oregon, Daughters; Ruth Ann (Fred) Alire and Crystal Jean Jarrett of Canon City, Grandkids; Angie (Rick) Burch, Karissa (Dave Strimback) Alire, Kayla Alire, Krysta Talbott Wear, Lindsey (Andrew) Steele, Meagan Brassea, Nicole Zimmerman, Great Grandkids; Duane Shoaf, Alaina Burch, Alivia Burch, Delaney Jo Burch, Blake Strimback, Ella Strimback, Emerald Wear, Jason Steele and Lucas Steele, and many nieces and nephews! Lilyana "Lily" Marie Zweig, 14, died Thursday, April 25, 2019. She drowned while swimming with her three brothers near her home. Lilyana was born November 8, 2004, in Phoenix, Arizona and was a resident of Canon City, Colorado since 2015. She is remembered by her friends and family as a sweet, generous, playful and awesome young lady. Unbridled Holdings purchases FMS Daily Record Staff

Unbridled Holdings VIII, LLC has purchased the Fremont Middle School building. In a press release Wednesday evening, the Florence-Penrose School District announced the purchase of the building for $515,000. The company will take possession of the property July 1. The news release did not include the company’s plans for the building. Superintendent Dr. Brenda Krage said the two challenges facing the district are that the building is no longer appropriate to provide safe and accessible educational programs for all students, and educational programming itself, meaning the middle school is underperforming. She said the ADA accessibility challenges are important drivers in the decision-making process, and the district is projecting an increase in the number

of students in the near and distant future at the middle school level that requires ADA compliant facilities. “It’s never an easy decision to sell school property that has such nostalgic ties to the community,” Krage said. “However, we’re thrilled with the local ties of the buyer and their vision for use of the building. Unbridled Holdings has a strong economic vision and plans for the use of this property.” Unbridled also purchased Cañon City’s Hotel St. Cloud in July 2018 for $80,000. The sale of the former Florence High School occurs on the 100th year anniversary of the building. Krage said the district will be allowed to use the gymnasium for athletic and activity competitions throughout the school year. On April 24, students and parents attended an open house at Florence High School to learn about course offerings, student
