Violet Cline

April 1, 1941 - February 11, 2019 The Life of Violet Jean Cline Violet Jean Bellew was born April 1, 1941 in Brewster, Colorado, the fifth of seven children born to Clardia (Shortie) Fleming Bellew and Luetta Jane Hoke Bellew. Violet, or Vi as she preferred, attended school in Canon City. During the summers, her entire family sold produce on South 9th Street. When Vi was 13, she would take the bus to the Royal Gorge, walk across the bridge, and wait tables at the Royal Gorge Cliff Terrace. She went on to wait tables for over thirty years in various restaurants, including Mr. Ed's. Violet married Philip N. Cline on May 9, 1959. They were married for 59 years and 9.5 months. The Cline family welcomed her, and she always had a special bond with "Pop". They loved to dance and were known for 'clearing the floor' so the other dancers could cheer them on. She also loved to square dance, play pinochle, and take spur of the moment camping trips with her family on Friday evenings. She loved Pepsi, fruit, coffee, and hot dogs and hamburgers with mustard and dill pickles. Vi and Phil spent years making wonderful wood crafts and selling them at craft fairs. She was in the height of her glory when she entertained people in her home, whether it was dozens for Thanksgiving dinners, or one or two stopping in for a cup of coffee or playing cards. Violet left this world

on February 11, 2019, after a lengthy illness. Even after her health failed, she always greeted everyone with a smile and was quick to laugh. She was preceded in death by her parents and her siblings Clarence Bellew, Eugene Bellew, Dora Wahlborg, Mary Knight, and Carol Gray, and Grandson Joseph Ryder. She is survived by her baby sister, Betty Phillips. She is also survived by her children Susan and husband Eric Wendell, Debbie and husband Steven Huskey, and Philip and wife Deb Cline. Violet was very proud of her 17 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Vi always had a smile that lit up any room, was a very hard worker, made amazing pies, and would give the shirt off her back to someone in need. It was always very important for her to know that everyone would have gifts and stockings at Christmas. She was a very good person who truly cared about all people. She was always the one to look out for the underdog. She will be missed. A visitation will be held Tuesday 9:30 am to 10:30 am at Holt Funeral Home with a funeral service to follow at 10:30 am. Burial will be at Mountain Vale Cemetery. Memorials for Violet can be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital. Services have been entrusted to Holt Funeral Home. Denis Delane Nichols 1940 - 2019

Denis Delane Nichols, 78 of Penrose, Colorado passed away in Colorado Springs after a long illness. Denis was born in Poplar Bluff, Missouri on October 9, 1940 to Claude and Myrtle Nichols. Denis is preceded in death by his wife Joyce; son Michael; his parents Claude and Myrtle Nichols; brothers Arthur Junior; Bobbie Allen; Donald Walter; Ronald Lee; Howard

Welsey and one sister, Patsy Ann. He is survived by his son Gerald D. Nichols of Peyton; brother Terry Nichols of Hartville, Missouri; sisters Pam Nichols-Parsons of Penrose, Colorado; Connie Bell of Penrose and numerous grandchildren. A private graveside service with military honors will be held at Mt. Vale cemetery at a later date.

John LeRoy Henager January 4, 1939 ~ February 15, 2019

John LeRoy Henager, age 80, left us after a long struggle with cancer on Friday, February 15, 2019 surrounded by family at his home in Florence, CO. John was born on January 4, 1939 in Spokane, WA to James and Evelyn (Paeper) Henager. He served proudly as a US Marine with one tour to Japan. He married Ann Garcia on December 3, 1974, and retired from ABC Rail in Pueblo, CO as a manufacturing engineer in 2000. He spent his remaining years as a devoted husband, father, grandfather and uncle. He is survived by his wife, Ann (Garcia) Henager; sister, JoAnne Dickinson; children, John Jr. (Franny) Henager, Tammy (Rick) Harriman, Evelyn (Jim) Hannah, Chris (Paige)

Henager and Charlette (Lisa) Henager; 13 grandchildren; 14 greatgrandchildren; and many in-laws, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, mother, brother, and sister, grandson and brother-in-laws. Services will be held 12:00 p.m. Friday, February 22, 2019 at Wilson's Funeral Home in Canon City followed by dinner and music at the Elks Lodge 611 in Florence, CO at 2:00pm. William Joseph "Bill" Paolino January 2, 1965 - February 15, 2019

William Joseph "Bill" Paolino, 54, was born January 2, 1965, in Denver, Colorado to William H. Paolino and Kathleen (Turnbull) Paolino. He lost his battle with cancer on February 15, 2019. Bill lived the majority of his life in Canon City where he attended Canon City Public schools, kindergarten through the 12th grade. After graduation, he joined the U.S. Navy and was stationed aboard the U.S.S. Midway in Japan. He was a very talented artist, leaving behind numerous beautiful pencil and watercolors for his family. His artistic abilities enabled him to be a fantastic embalmer and funeral director in his family's funeral homes. At one point in his life, Bill moved to North Dakota where he worked in salt wells. He and his wife, Lori, lived in Epping, ND where he was very involved in the town's government and was Mayor. While living in

North Dakota, he became a member of the Masonic lodge and Shrine Club. He was a proud member of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma. Bill is survived by his wife, Lori; his mother and stepfather, Kathleen and Rockey Wells; his siblings, Shawn (Demi) and Valerie (Ben); children, Shelby, Jacob, Summer and Raquel; grandchildren, Porter, Paislie, Dalilah, and Jerrico; nieces, Eden and Sophia; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, William (Bill) Paolino; maternal grandparents, Douglas and Myrtle Turnbull; paternal grandparents, Joe and Janie Paolino; uncle, Douglas Turnbull and special cousin/friend, Jeff Bollig. Martha Jo Naab

January 5, 1961 - February 14, 2019 Martha Jo (Zerr) Naab, age 58, passed away Febuary 14, 2019 in Canon City. Martha was born January 5th, 1961 to Martin and Rita (Burkhart) Zerr in Garden City, Kansas. Martha had a deep affection for food and for cooking, and could often be found in her kitchen with the Food Network on for inspiration. Tending to her plants and flowers gave her much joy. She always enjoyed a chance to talk with people on the phone for extended periods of time, especially her mother and her siblings. Martha reveled in music of all types, and was no stranger to a night of dancing, or a day, it didn't matter to her what time it was, when her song was on she was going to sing along and move to it. She was as friendly, warm, and personable as they come and never met a person she couldn't immediately befriend and talk with at length. Martha really loved people; she loved to laugh with people. She was a true treasure of a human being, a beautiful woman in and out, and a bright and loving soul through and through. It could be said that she partied hard and that she laughed the hardest. Martha will be missed beyond words and will

be remembered lovingly by all that had the pleasure of knowing her through her life. She is survived by her children Madisyn and Marcus, her mother Rita, her five sisters Tina, Kathy, Carol, Mary, and Suzanne, her two brothers Steve and Mike, and one grandchild Aspen. She is preceded in death by her father Martin. A memorial service will be held on Sunday February 24th, 2019 from 10:00a.m. to 12:00p.m. at the Seventh Day Adventist Church at 3180 E. Main street in Canon City, Colorado. At a later date there will be a celebration of life gathering in Canon City, details of this event will be announced soon. There will also be a service in Martha's hometown of Garden City, Kansas on Saturday March 2nd. All are welcome, just as she would have it. David Messer

September 17, 1956 - February 11, 2019 After a life of fighting injustice and battling "morons", on February 11th, 2019 the droning sounds of country music finally drove David Messer to insurmountable boredom. No more are the adventure seeking days of traveling the North American world, preparing the finest meals, or exploring "old things". Born September 17th, 1956, David Messer was a stubborn expert of many things. He could remodel an entire house using only things found in a scrap pile. He could also identify the perfect pizza and instantly spot an imposter based on location alone. He took fashion cues from no one, never once finding a shirt he couldn't adapt to his signature line.

David was always ready to lend a helping hand and was never at a shortage for constructive wisdom. Most notable of his expertise was his impeccable taste in women, marrying his first 43 years ago, Marilyn Messer (deceased), and second, Patricia Messer, 7 years ago. While at first glance this man may appear ordinary and unassuming, his family will always remember him as a, kind, mild mannered super hero who loved them without prejudice. David leaves behind a slightly dysfunctional family. His wife Patricia, Son, blah blah blah... Due to his strong political opinions in life, the family feels best to have a private memorial.

Community forum March 1 will address opioids, meth and heroin

A second community forum addressing opioids, methamphetamines and heroin will be from 1-3 p.m. March 1 in the gymnasium at Mountain View Core Knowledge School, located at 890 Field Ave. The guest speaker will be a recovered addict, sharing the story of meth addiction and recovery. A Q&A board will be comprised of representatives from Solvista Health, Southern Peaks Treatment Center, St. Thomas More Hospital, Palace Drug, Colorado State Patrol and Cañon City Schools. “It is my hope that those attending the upcoming forum will received useful information that they will be able to use in practical ways should their lives be touched by these drugs or by those involved in the drug culture,” said Timme Pearson of Wings of Hope Counseling Services, who is sponsoring this event. Pearson said the important message she hopes that will be conveyed is letting those needing help with their substance use challenges know that “we are here, help is here...hang on, don’t let go...there is HOPE.” “Furthermore, we are making the call to Fremont County to come together just as it has for the Small Business Revolution,” Pearson said. “Surely if we can gather this level of momentum to achieve top three in this competition, we can do this same thing to get support for the critically needed detox center, to provide quality outpatient treatment for those in our community who are needing help with their substance use challenges...that ‘stepping up and standing up’ is more than words, that we together can make things happen beginning now, not tomorrow, not next year.” The community is invited to this free event.

Cañon City’s Main Street is growing, changing and there’s more to come

Main Street is evolving. It already has quietly and slowly been happening — projects in the works and lots of work taking place behind the scenes — but in addition to what’s happening now, there’s still more to come. Cañon City Economic Development Director Ryan Stevens said he has received inquiries from people wanting information on opening more businesses. Part of the interest is the attention garnered from the Small Business Revolution, which has been a catalyst to get the word out that there is somebody at the city who is helping people get businesses open and providing information, Stevens said. The visibility of Stevens’ position and all the activity on Main Street is helping to encourage people who have thought about starting a business but don’t know what steps they need to take or who to contact. Within the City of Cañon City boundaries, the economic development role is fairly new. Stevens started in the new position June 1, 2017. “The visibility of this project has given them the conﬁdence to call and ask the questions that they want to ask about opening a business,” Stevens said. “I think that’s a very positive ﬁrst step into helping to revitalize Main Street.” He said people also are asking about how to keep this momentum going, and one of those key steps that will help sustain this buzz is getting more businesses open and getting more activity going on Main Street. “There are other projects in the pipeline that are coming down the road.” When Unbridled purchased the vacant, historic Hotel St. Cloud in July, President Stan Bullis saw potential on Main Street. Now the Small Business Revolution has seen it, too. “It’s like a city lying in wait for someone outside, or groups of people outside, to realize or to see the potential,” Bullis said. “(Cañon City) already had everything to be and to become a great city, you just needed to be reminded that you had it.” Bullis hopes to break ground by June and then have the Hotel St. Cloud operational about two and a half years after that. He said that there’s a big trend right now in the traveling world where people don’t want the same experiences in a different city, they want a different experience in a different city. “What Cañon City offers, because of Main Street, is a very different experience in a very different city,” Bullis said. “We like the boutique hotel, we like Main Street, we like that the restaurants are locally owned and operated, we like that there are no chains there because that’s what the customer is asking for.” Unbridled has a sign in a window at the hotel that reads, “writing the future.” Bullis said it will be a collaboration between Unbridled and the residents of Cañon City to write the future of what the hotel will be, which starts with honoring its past. “We have to collectively determine what

that future is going to be, and then we all have to participate in it,” he said. Unbridled also recently purchased the Apex building at 425 Main St. The building at 709 Main St. is under contract, as is the Skyline Theater. Jonathan Wield will be the majority owner of the theater, with Unbridled as a minority partner. “The goal there is sort of a compilation of holding the past — which is dollar movies, but then writing the future, which is getting some entertainers, storytellers, comedians and super regional bands in there and giving people a reason to go to Main Street,” Bullis said. “Let’s bring back the dollar movies during the day and early in the weekend, and (at night) let’s step up the experience.” Unbridled and the city are working to come up with solutions to parking issues in the downtown area, he said. The Apex building will continue to house FEDC TechSTART on the second floor, but plans for the bottom floor are still under wraps. The 709 Main St. building will be used for executive offices for the Hotel St. Cloud.

Another signiﬁcant project that has been in the works for quite some time is the new Valley-Wide Health Systems clinic at 531 Main St. Set to open in late spring, the facility will be a 14,800-square-foot, integrated health-care clinic that offers medical, dental and behavioral health services in the heart of Cañon City’s historic downtown area. “It’s really exciting to be right in the middle of any kind of downtown enterprise,” said E.J. Rickey, the director of Marketing and Communications for Valley-Wide Health Systems. “Anytime you’re in the middle of downtown enterprise, and you are making a signiﬁcant contribution to the economic development of the community, while providing services that are needed, I think it is a really, really exciting opportunity for not only us to be part of it, but also for the citizens of Fremont County to have this as an asset available to them.” When looking at developing Main Street from an economic development standpoint, Stevens said having more

professional services downtown will help businesses, restaurants in particular, during lunchtime, and it will help create more traffic and more activity. “Over time, that’s a huge benefit for downtown,” he said. The Hotel St. Cloud also will help increase the daytime population downtown with employees and new visitors coming to town, and it also will help the nighttime population with more activity and buzz in the evening. Despite all the activity, there are some vacant storefronts and empty restaurants that need to be filled. “There’s still a lot of work to do, but there are a lot of businesses downtown,” Stevens said. “Most people will focus on the vacant storefronts, they don’t realize we have all these other businesses peppered in there.” He said because it’s such a long Main Street, people don’t see the concentration of businesses downtown until there is an event like the Chocolate Lovers Walk that featured 49 businesses and organizations last week. “That’s why the Chocolate Walk is such a great event because it gets people into the doors of businesses that they didn’t realize were there,” Stevens said. Even in the Small Business Revolution’s winning community, those film crews are going to go home, and the community will need to be able to sustain the current momentum over the long-run, Stevens said. “Having built these connections, and building this camaraderie and building this momentum is very imperative for what happens next,” he said. “We really need to make sure that we sustain that momentum and we sustain these connections and work very hard to make sure that we have a plan to move this thing forward.”

Debbie Herrera to be honored at this year’s Senior Mini College

Debbie Herrera, longtime employee, alumni, and friend of Pueblo Community College, Fremont Campus, is being honored with the dedication of the 34th Senior Mini College of 2019. Debbie’s history with Senior Mini College began in 1990 when she assisted in the 5th program as a work-study student. Since that time Debbie has played an integral role in ensuring the success of the 29 following programs. Each year Debbie works tirelessly to build the courses for registration. She prepares the schedule for print and meticulously edits the information. Debbie is a member of the Senior Mini College Board. She enjoys working with the board members and greatly appreciates being chosen for this honor. Debbie graduated from PCC, Fremont Campus in 1992 with an Associate of Applied Science degree. Upon graduation she began her 27 year employment with the Fremont Campus while it was still housed at the Holy Cross Abbey. Debbie has a wealth of Fremont Campus knowledge. She is a mentor to all.
