Bro. Carpenter Begins Second Year As Grand Master The Right Worshipful Grand Master, Bro. William A. Carpenter, has begun his second year as Grand Master of Masons in Pennsylvan ia with the same d egree of energy and enthusiasm that carried him to more than 400 meetings and into 253 of the state's 566 lodges during 1984. His 1985 schedu le req uires an even greater effort as he continues an unprecedented program of visitati ons that will cause him to travel more miles, and a llow him to greet more Masons, than any Grand Master in the historyofthisjuris d iction. Bro. Carpente r was aga in e l ected Gra nd Master during the December Quarterly Commun icat ion of the Grand Lodge held in the Grand Ballroom of the Philade lph ia Centre Hote l on December 5. By tak ing advantage of l eg is lative changes that simpli fy the ba lloting a nd installation procedures, the Gra nd Master and other e lected Grand Lodge officials retained their respective stations th rough a vote by acclamation. Bro. Carl W. Stenb erg, Jr., was ree l ected R.W. DeputyGrand Master; Bro. Arthur J. Kurtz, R.W. Senior Grand Warden, a nd Bro. W. Scott Stone r, R.W. Junior Grand Warden. Bro. Arthur R. Diamond was elect ed the R.W. Grand Treasurer for th e 18th consecutive year, a nd Bro. Thomas W. Jackson was retain ed as R.W. Grand Secreta ry for the fifth time. Bro. Carpenter's ree lection as Grand Master m a rl~s th e b eg in ning of what wi ll be his 25th con secutiveyearofd irectservice to the Grand Lodge of Penn sylvan ia. A Past Master and long-time Sec retary of Ch ester Lo dge No. 236, he joined the Grand Lodge fam ily as Librarian a nd Curator in 1 961 and served in that capacity through 1 969 when he b ecame a part of the Grand Maste r's staff. Bro. Carpe nter was se rvin g as the Director o f Maso n ic Educa tio n whe n he
was e lected in 1973 as t he R.W. Grand Secretary. His years of experience as the first ed itor of The Pennsylvania Freemason a nd as a member of nume rous Grand Lodge co mmi ttees, most notably the Committee on Masonic Homes and the Committee on Finance, h ave served him well since his e lection to the Grand Lodge line as'Junior Grand Warden in 1979. In his in augu ra l address on December 27, 1983, Grand Master Carpenter li sted 1 2 goal s he h oped to accomplish during 1 984. H e so u ght to improve th e dress of those attending the lodges a nd to encourage the wearing of masonic emblems . H e suggested the members of the fraternity take advantage of th e r ic h h e ritage of educational materia ls, and urged th em to protect and preserve our unique rCtua l.
