William A. Carpenter Made Pennsylvania Grand Master Bro. William A. Carpenter of Upland , former Grand Secretary, has been installed as Right Worshipful Grand Master of Masons in Pennsylvania. Bro. Carpenter assumed the h ighest masonic office in the state at noon on Tuesday, December 27. He succeeded Bro. Samuel C. Williamson of Pitcairn, who served as Grand Master for 1982 and 1983. The installation ceremony tool' place during the Annua l Grand Communication held in the auditorium of Founders Hall on the campus of the Milton Hershey School in H ershey, Pennsylvania. A lso installed were Bro. Carl W. Stenberg, Jr. of Pittsburgh as Deputy Grand Master; Bro. Arthur J. Kurtz o f Harrisburg as Senior Grand Warden, and Bro. W. ScottStonerofLancaster as Jun ior Grand Warden. Bro. Arth u r R. Diamond ofJenkintown and Bro. Thomas W. Jackson of Audubon were reelected Grand Treas u rer and Grand Secretary, respective ly. Born in Chester, Bro. Carpen ter became a resident of Upland, the o ldest settlement in Pennsylvan ia, following completion of his mi litary service after World War II. He was assigned to the Mi litaty Intelligence Offi ce at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. from 1940 to 1 946. He was ed ucated in th e pub! ic school s of Chester and attend e d Prince ton

University a nd th e University of Pennsylvania. Bro. Carpenter developed an interest in printing and newspaper worl' through an early association with The Chester Times and later with th e News-Journal Co. o f Wilmington, Delaware. He was the composing room superintendent of the Wilmington Joumal-t:uery t:uening in 1961 when h e resig n ed to ac.cept employment with the Grand Lodge. A member o f Chester Lodge No. 236, Bro. Carpenter served as Wors hipful Master in 1953; as Treasure r from 1 954 through 1956, and as Secretary from 1957 through 1 973. He was a member of th e Board of Directors o f the Chester Masonic Tem p le Association, having se rve d five years as c ha irman and 11 years as secretary. Accepting full -tim e service as Grand Lodge Librarian and Curator in 1961, h e served in that capacity t hrough 1969 when he join ed the Grand Maste r's staff for two years and then served as D irector of Masonic Ed ucation until hi s e lectio n in 1973 as R.W. Grand Secreta1y. Bro. Ca rpen ter was editor ofThe 'Pennsylvania Free mason from its inception

Grand Master William A. Car pen ter has developed an ambitious program of informal vi sita tio ns that wi ll bring him into contact with virtua lly every one of the 574 lodges in t he jurisdiction during his expected tim e as Grand Master for 1984 and 1985.
