ne more race like July 20 Borchetta Bourbon Music City Grand Prix presented by OnlyBulls at Nashville Superspeedway and the Spaniard can all but deliver the knockout blow to his competition. That scenario exists because there is increasingly very little competition left for Palou. As of the OnlyBulls Grand Prix of Portland, Palou will carry an 83-point lead over Team Penske’s David Malukas. Andretti Global’s Kyle

Kirkwood sits 87 points back, and they are the only drivers with 100 points of the reigning series champion. With 49 points the most a driver can gain on a participating opponent in a single race weekend, Palou effectively holds a two-race cushion with six races remaining. Palou chewed up the field in Nashville by leading the final 97 of 225 laps and he is chewing up the record books. Eight wins in 17 races last year and five in 12 races this year give him a two-year win rate

of 44.8 percent. INDYCAR’s point structure is weighted toward top-five finishers, and Palou has finished in the top five of 23 of the past 29 races, a rate of 79.3 percent. So, catch him if you can. Another season championship would draw Palou even with Sebastien Bourdais for the alltime record and it would be his fifth series title in six years. The only two drivers who would have more season crowns would be A.J. Foyt (seven) and Scott Dixon (six). Foyt’s best run was five titles in eight years; Dixon collected five in 16 years. Remember, Palou is still only 29 years old, turning so on April 1.

Palou’s 24 career race wins are tied with the totals of Ted Horn and Bobby Rahal in 18th place in the sport’s history. Gordon Johncock is next on the list with 25 wins. Given that Palou will be heavily favored at Portland and Laguna Seca, seven wins this

season is not out of the question. Don’t rule out eight either. There’s that “eight” again. Remember, it’s the count boxing referees can use to signal the end of a bout. It could soon be in play here, too, as Palou works toward yet another knockout.

or the engineers of Honda Racing Corporation USA (HRC US), the 2026 NTT INDYCAR SERIES calendar has thrown down an unprecedented gauntlet. The schedule features three brand-new, unchartered temporary street courses: Arlington, Washington D.C., and the upcoming Ontario Honda Dealers Indy at Markham on August 16.

Markham presents a tantalizing but terrifying blank canvas: a 2.19-mile, 12-turn temporary street circuit that has never seen a racing tire. There is no historical data, no onboard footage from previous years, and no rubber laid down on the asphalt. Yet, when the green flag drops, the Honda-powered teams expect to roll off the transport trucks with cars dialed perfectly into the track’s unique rhythm. How do

you prepare for a place you have never been? The answer lies deep within HRC’s technical headquarters, inside a multi-million-dollar simulator that effectively bends reality. To bridge the gap between the unknown and the grid, HRC relies on its cutting-edge Driver-In-The-Loop (DIL) Simulator. This isn’t a high-end video game; it is a hyper-realistic virtual laboratory

designed to align virtual testing perfectly with the physical race car. The HRC DIL simulator integrates a physical IndyCar cockpit featuring 360-degree yaw rotation and a 270-degree visual field with real Honda aerodynamic, laser-scanned tracks, and HRC-created tire models. To ensure the simulation is flawless, HRC US utilizes high-fidelity laser scanning technology combined with sophisticated rFpro software to create “digital twins” of real-world race circuits. To maximize this piece of engineering wizardry, HRC announced in midJune that 2024 INDYCAR Rookie of the Year Linus Lundqvist had joined the program as the official HRC Driver-InThe-Loop Simulator Development Driver. One of Lundqvist’s tasks

in his new role is logging thousands of virtual laps to shake down new tracks to help HRC develop and sharpen the simulation tools to take prediction capabilities one step further. Davide Tarsitano, Head of Vehicle Performance at HRC US, knows that modeling a street circuit is a moving target. Even on familiar streets like Long Beach, human error plays a role. “The city collaborates with IndyCar to put the barriers where they normally should be,” Tarsitano said. “But in reality, because they’re humans putting the barriers, those barriers change year on year. The track actually evolves just as a function of human error.” For a completely fresh venue like Markham, the challenge scales expo-

nentially. The process begins the moment IndyCar confirms a track layout, often collaborating with veteran track designer Tony Cotman. First, HRC takes basic architectural drawings defining the layout, pit lane, start-finish line, and safety runoff areas. HRC provides rFactor with this layout of the track, who then scan the streets of the circuit and provides HRC with a product that can be used at the DIL. However, turning a scan into a racetrack requires intense mathematical filtering. “Imagine these track models are just like clouds of points that are scanned,” Tarsitano said. “You cannot drive on a cloud of points. You need to drive on the surface. Otherwise, there are basically holes everywhere. In the process of trying to fit a surface to

this cloud of points, there can be elevation steps that are too aggressive for our vehicle model, or very noisy parts of the track. There is a whole process of fitting a surface through this cloud of points and filtering out a bunch of noise.” HRC aggressively pushes to have this finished digital model commissioned a tight but necessary eight weeks before the race event. Even with a digital twin of Markham’s layout, one massive, looming question mark remains. Grip is a volatile, shifting metric at the best of times on any temporary circuit but in northern climates like Markham, rigid winters radically alter the morphology of the asphalt annually. Frost warps the ground, and city road crews frequently patch up broken stretches of street. “If there are just a couple of corners that have been repaved because the street broke down during the winter, like a city patch, even if you have historical data to go off, the track grip is going to be completely off because of that repave,” Tarsitano said. Predicting how the Firestone tires will interact with un-raced Canadian asphalt is where engineering morphs into a dark art. It’s a secret recipe that HRC keeps under lock and key.

“That’s the part where I cannot disclose too much... because that process is quite IP,” Tarsitano said. “And that is really the difference between teams that show up with their cars at Markham and they’re going to be fairly close to reality, and the people that actually are starting the weekend on the back foot. You are going to probably get it quite wrong. It’s about who gets it the least wrong that starts with an advantage.” While the engineering team works behind the scenes months in advance, the race teams and drivers enter the picture during a hyper-focused two-week window leading up to the event. Before the final track model is even fully polished, HRC utilizes offline simulations to answer fundamental baseline questions—such as calculating top speeds (VMAX) to help teams select their initial gear ratios. Once the DIL model is live, the simulator

bay becomes the busiest room in the company. Drivers demand time in the simulator as close to the race weekend as possible so the muscle memory remains fresh before they walk into the Markham paddock. In the hyper-competitive era between two brands, Honda has generally held the upper hand against rival Chevrolet at temporary street circuit events. For Tarsitano and his performance group, maintaining that supremacy at a brand-new track like Markham is deeply personal. “I cannot understate how proud we are to be able to provide our teams with the best tools and the least wrong sort of guess about everything we provide,” Tarsitano said. “Me and my team, we personally take a lot of pride in that. It’s the culmination of so much hard work—a lot of data analysis, lots of assessments made on the track, on the car, on our sim tools.”

his year marks the inaugural Ontario Honda Dealers Indy at Markham and the city has been working hard to prepare for the event! In September 2025, the mayor of Markham, Frank Scarpitti, announced that the city would be building a temporary road course to welcome drivers, teams, and fans from around the world to this marquee event. After 40 years of racing around the Exhibition grounds in downtown Toronto, the event had the opportunity this year to create a brand new track design in vibrant downtown Markham. To ensure an exciting circuit, the event organizers sought out the experts. They were fortunate to secure Tony Cotman of NRC Consulting to lead the track design for the Ontario Honda Dealers Indy at Markham. Cotman’s racing expertise is exceptional. He has

served as Race Director for Indy Lights, from 2010-12 and again from 2015 to 2021. Under his leadership, the series introduced the Dallara IL15 chassis. Cotman is a leading street course designer and counts the temporary street circuits at São Paulo, Brazil, St. Petersburg, FL and Arlington, TX among his many accomplishments.

INDYCAR notes that building a street circuit requires more than erecting concrete barriers and catch fencing; it’s about sculpting a race-ready course from existing infrastructure. Because street circuits need to accommodate existing buildings and infrastructure, they require careful planning. As part of the track design, local business and community concerns are also considered. The Markham track features several prime passing zones, including some good passing areas between Turns 8-10 and most notably a Turn 5 hairpin that feeds onto a long straightaway along Enterprise Boulevard, where cars are expected to exceed 180 mph before approaching the right-hand Turn 6. With so many new passing zones, fans should have improved sightlines for watching the iconic INDYCARS travel

The battle for this year’s USF Pro 2000 Presented by Continental Tire championship – and a scholarship valued at $593,056 to advance next year to INDY NXT – remains very much in the balance as the season reaches toward its conclusion. USF Pro 2000 represents the third and final step on the highly acclaimed USF Pro Championships ladder, which offers substantial scholarships to assist young drivers in progressing from the grassroots of the sport toward the pinnacle – the NTT INDYCAR SERIES and the Indianapolis 500. Intriguingly, the top two drivers in the title chase at the halfway point in the 18-race campaign are both defending series champions: Jack Jeffers, from San Antonio, Texas, won last year’s USF2000 crown, while Florida-based Brazilian Leonardo Escorpioni emerged triumphant on the first rung of the ladder, USF Juniors.

Jeffers is gunning for a second straight championship with Exclusive Autosport.

Editorial deadlines ensure this is written prior to the most recent pair of races last weekend at Portland International Raceway, but with 10 races in the books, Escorpioni holds a slender two-point margin over his main rival. Another handful of combatants remain in the mix, too. The aspirations of Jeffers and Escorpioni, in particular, have ebbed and flowed as the story has unfolded.

Jeffers was the first to make his mark for Exclusive Autosport as he qualified on pole for the opening race on the streets of Arlington. Texas. Unfortunately, after leading from the start, a gear-shifting glitch pitched him into the wall and gifted the victory to Escorpioni, who had started second for Turn 3 Motorsport after making the leap from USF Juniors. Jeffers rebounded to win Race Two, and since then has never finished lower than sixth. After failing to feature at all on the Indianapolis GP road course in May, Escorpioni turned things around magnificently by taking pole and finishing second on the Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park oval. He has been a factor ever since, moving to the top of the standings with an outstanding tripleheader sweep at Mid-Ohio. Several other contenders also have enjoyed a share of the limelight. New Zealander Jacob Douglas won at Indy for Pabst Racing before being sidelined by budgetary constraints, while teammate G3 Argyros, from Newport Beach, Calif., doubled up at Road America to claim third in the points table. Fellow Californian Frankie Mossman led the point standings after finishing on

the podium for VRD Racing in three of the first four races, but is still searching for his first victory. Mossman has since slipped to fifth in the standings behind Peruvian rookie Andres Cardenas, who is working on a sequence of top finishes for the JHDD powered by ECR team. ebastian Garzon seemed to be cruising toward the USF2000 Presented by Continental Tire championship with one-third of the 18-round season in the books. The second-year Colombian racer dominated the opening event for DEForce Racing on the streets of St. Petersburg, Fla., then added another win on the Indianapolis GP road course. Two more podium finishes, plus another third-place run at the only oval event on the calendar at Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park, catapulted him into a 54-point lead and marked him a firm favorite to secure a scholarship valued at $409,816 to graduate next year to USF Pro 2000. Five races later, that lead had been trimmed to only

19 points after disappointing qualifying runs both at Road America and MidOhio. Garzon rebounded to secure a podium finish at each event, and has finished all except one of 11 races in the top five, but remains under pressure as the season reaches toward its climax. Following this weekend’s pair of races that will comprise the Continental Tire Grand Prix of Markham, only one more tripleheader event at Road America will complete the schedule. Perennial USF2000 front-running team Pabst Racing has provided the main reason for Garzon’s angst, with not one but two challengers having emerged as potential title rivals. Lucas Nanji has faced a steep learning curve in his first year of car racing.

And both, like Garzon, are competing in their second season of USF2000. Brad Majman, from Melbourne, was obliged to skip five races last year due to visa issues – especially frustrating as the hiatus came right after claiming his first podium finish at LOR – but he picked up from where he left off by snagging three top-five results to round out his rookie campaign. A switch to Pabst Racing for 2026 immediately marked him as one of the title favorites, and after adding three more top-fives from the opening four races, Majman finally broke through to Victory Lane in the final race of the Indianapolis GP tripleheader. Majman subsequently qualified fastest for the first two races at the team’s home track Road America, and even though he had to be content with a pair of runnerup results, he produced another win in the finale before adding two more strong finishes at Mid-Ohio. Teammate Beswick, a former Australian Formula Ford champion from Sydney, also played a starring role at Road America. After a challenging debut season with an Australian-based team with no prior experience in North America, Beswick proved the wisdom of his switch to Pabst by scoring an overdue maiden victory in Wisconsin and adding another at Mid-Ohio. The man to beat this weekend, however, is likely to be Anthony Martella, who leads the charge for the Exclusive Autosport team. Martella, from nearby Woodbridge, Ont., has accumulated

He has also attracted more than his fair share of misfortune, including at St. Petersburg where he failed to finish either race, and at LOR, where he was comfortably in the lead until a car that was being lapped crashed directly in front of him. Teammate Cole Medeiros, from Ayr, Ont., will gain valuable experience for the future as he steps up from USF Juniors for his home event, while Pabst Racing’s Lucas Nanji, from Montreal, Que., holds rather higher expectations after displaying improving form during his rookie season.

ith five wins and four poles in the first nine races, three-time series champion Marc-Antoine Camirand is charging hard towards his fourth driver’s title. If he accomplishes the feat, it’ll be a championship three-peat, after he won in 2024 and 2025. He won his first driver’s title in 2022. Camirand won from the pole twice at Autodrome Chaudiere quarter-mile oval in early June and followed it up with two poles and two wins at the Autodrome Montmagny oval a month later. He notched another pole at Calabogie Motorsports Park in mid-July, before winning again at Edmonton International Raceway at the end of last month.

On the strength of these results, Camirand’s no. 96 Chevrolet sits at the top of the driver’s standings, 54 points clear of second-place Kevin Lacroix, as of press time. Lacroix, meanwhile, is putting together an impressive season of his own with two wins (Riverside International Speedway and Edmonton 1), and three top five finishes. Lacroix’s no. 74 Dodge is just nine points ahead of three-time champion L.P. Dumoulin, with two-time champ D.J. Kennington, and rookie Connor Bell rounding out the top five. Like the driver’s standings, the chase for the owner’s crown is a tight affair. Jean-Claude Paille, owner of Cami-

rand’s no. 96 Chevy sits in first with 397 points, which is 49 ahead of second-place Donald Theetge, the owner-driver of the no. 80 Chevy. Sylvain Lacroix, Tony Page, and D.J. Kennington round out the top five. As for the Rookie of the Year chase, Connor Bell leads William Larue on the strength of four top ten results. Larue, despite trailing Bell by

22 points, has notched three poles and six top five finishes at time of publication. With just four races left beginning this weekend on the Streets of Markham, everything’s on the line in the 2026 NASCAR Canada Series as teams and drivers battle for race wins and season-long championships.
