The genesis of Formula DRIFT takes place. Formula DRIFT founders Jim Liaw and Ryan Sage bring competition drifting to America by organizing an exhibition competition for the Japanese Series D1 Grand Prix at Irwindale Speedway. This is why Irwindale is lovingly referred to as “The House of Drift” in America.
At SEMA 2003, a formal announcement is made about the creation of the very first ormula DRIFT Championship series.
Road Atlanta paves their infamous “horseshoe” at turn 10, making it the perfect grounds for drifting. The gears are already turning for the Formula DRIFT founders.
Following the paving of that turn 10 horseshoe, Formula DRIFT holds their first ver round at Road Atlanta.

The sport is growing, and the fans are hungry for more! Formula DRIFT expands their series to 6 rounds, introducing Streets of Long Beach and Evergreen Speedway, tracks that are still in the PRO Championship circuit today.
Formula DRIFT expands to 7 rounds, feeding the ever-growing appetite for more competition drifting in America.





Formula DRIFT organizes the Red Bull Drifting World Championship, in which 32 drivers from 12 different countries compete.

Another new arena! Utah Motorsports Campus opens its gates to Formula DRIFT for the first tim.
Fredric Aasbo takes the PRO Championship win, making him the third driver to win three PRO Championships in Formula DRIFT, joining Chris Forsberg and James Deane.
James Deane wins a record-breaking fourth championship. He won four Rounds in 2024, marking one of the most dominan performances in Formula DRIFT history.





The Auto Manufacturer Cup and Tire Cup recognize performance across the grid, rewarding not just driver skill, but engineering, consistency, and team depth. At each round, the top performing drivers contribute points toward their respective manufacturer and tire standings, creating a parallel championship that runs alongside the main title figh.
The Auto Manufacturer Cup is designed to showcase vehicles that remain true to their roots, requiring the engine platform to match the original manufacturer of the chassis.
In 2025, Toyota claimed the title, driven by one of the deepest lineups in the series. With consis-
tent performances from drivers like Fredric Aasbo, Jhonnattan Castro, and Hiroya Minowa, Toyota built its advantage through depth rather than relying on a single standout result. That consistency proved to be the difference. While Ford and Chevrolet remained strong contenders throughout the



season, Toyota’s ability to place multiple drivers in competitive positions at every round secured the championship.
At each event, the top two drivers from each eligible manufacturer contribute points, making overall team strength a key factor in the final sandings.
In a sport where grip, consistency, and durability are critical, the Tire Cup plays an equally important role.
In 2025, GT Radial secured the Tire Cup, delivering a dominant season across multiple drivers. Strong performances from Matt Field, Hiroya Minowa, Adam LZ, and Odi Bakchis helped the brand maintain a consistent presence at the front of the fied.
Their advantage came from both performance and reliability, allowing them to accumulate points steadily across all rounds.
Close behind, Kenda and Nitto remained in contention, with Kenda in particular benefiting fom consistent results across its driver lineup.


Like the Manufacturer Cup, the Tire Cup rewards the top two drivers from each brand at every round, emphasizing depth and consistency across the season.

Together, these championships highlight the broader ecosystem behind Formula Drift. Every run is the result of driver skill, vehicle engineering, and product performance working together. While only one driver can stand on top of the podium, the Auto Manufacturer Cup and Tire Cup ensure that the brands behind the sport are competing just as hard for their place at the top.





























































The 2026 Formula Drift season marks one of the most signi fi cant shifts in the series’ history, with major changes to judging, venue selection, and driver development pathways. Together, these updates signal a clear evolution in how the sport is judged, experienced, and grown
At the forefront of this transformation is the introduction of a new judging system powered by Race Data Labs and its “Wally” digital drift judging system.
Built around the Universal Drift Scoring Method, the system integrates real-time telemetry from every competition car, measuring key elements such as line, angle, speed, and positioning on track. For the first time, the majority of a driver’s qualifying score will be generated through data-driven analysis, while human judges retain control over style and execution.
The goal is not to replace judges, but to bring greater clarity and consistency to the sport.

don’t understand why they lost,” explains Competition Director Kevin Wells. “You can explain it, but it’s not always clear.”
With the addition of telemetry and 3D run visualization, that clarity becomes a central focus. Drivers and teams will now be able to review their runs in precise detail, identifying exactly where they gained or lost points. The system also provides tools to analyze proximity, speed, and transitions during tandem runs, offering a clearer picture even in situations where visibility is limited by tire smoke or angle.
This added level of transparency is expected to help drivers adapt more quickly and refin their performance throughout the weekend, while also giving fans a better understanding of how decisions are made.
At the same time, not every aspect of drifting can be reduced to data.

Style remains a human element, leaving room for interpretation, individuality, and the creative expression that define the sport. As Formula Drift enters this new era, the balance between digital precision and human judgment will play a defining ole in how competition continues to evolve.
According to Wells, the shift was driven by a combination of logistical challenges and a renewed focus on the fan experience. Uncertainty surrounding Englishtown’s future made long-term planning difficult, while other venues struggled with attendance or lacked the energy needed to elevate the show.
“The biggest thing is the energy,” Wells explains. “Having the crowd close to the action, hearing them react, that changes everything. That’s more valuable than anything else.”
That philosophy is reflected in the choice of new venues, many of which allow spectators to be positioned closer to the course. The result is a more immersive environment where fans are not just watching the action, but feeling it.
Designing layouts for new tracks, however, presents its own set of challenges. Beyond simply drawing a course, organizers must consider pit access, grid placement, safety zones, barriers, and the physical limitations of each facility.
“People cartoon a map and say, ‘just do this,’” Wells says. “But it’s not that simple.”
From a competition standpoint, new tracks introduce an element of unpredictability. With no historical data to rely on, drivers are forced to adapt quickly, creating opportunities for newcomers to close the gap. At the same time, experienced teams are still expected to find their rhythm faster, maintaining an edge through resources and experience.
The layouts themselves are also evolving. Moving away from more segmented, stop-and-go designs, the new courses are expected to favor higher-speed entries and smoother transitions, creating longer, more sustained tandem battles. The goal is simple: better flow, better competition, and a more exciting show for fans.




Beyond the top level, Formula Drift has also restructured its Pro-Am affiliate program, creating clearer and more accessible pathways for drivers to earn their professional competition licenses.While new initiatives continue to emerge, long-standing grassroots series remain at the core of driver development. Among them is Canada’s DMCC, now entering its 22nd season, one of the longest-running and most influential drifting series in North America, featuring both Pro and Pro-Am competition.
Over the years, DMCC has developed a strong pipeline of talent to the professional ranks, producing drivers such as Ryan Tuerck, Dave Briggs, Marc Landreville, Miro Ovcharik, Tommy Lemaire, Bass
Canada’s DMCC, now entering its 22nd season, one of the longest-running and most influential drifting series in North America, featuring both Pro and Pro-Am competition.
Gauthier, Jayden Martorana, and Josiah Fallaise. The series has also played a role beyond competition, with fiures like Ryan Lanteigne transitioning from DMCC Pro driver to long-time Formula Drift judge, helping shape the sport at the highest level.
Alongside DMCC, other leading Pro-Am series across North America continue to play a critical role in driver development, including Drift Colorado, East 10
Drift, Full Lock Drift, Great Lakes ProAm, ND Drift, Spec D, US Drift Circuit, Gateway PROAM, and Klutch Kickers. Programs such as Drift School USA, Evergreen Drift, and US Drift further support the pipeline through scouting and development initiatives.
Together, these series form the backbone of the sport, ensuring that new talent continues to rise through the ranks and compete at the highest level.

n 2026, Formula DRIFT continues to expand its Driven Experience program, an initiative designed to introduce students to motorsports while opening the door to real career opportunities within the automotive and performance industries.
Launched in 2024, the program has quickly grown into a key part of the Formula DRIFT ecosystem, connecting students with hands on experiences at events across North America. Through partnerships with organizations like AccelER8 Education, the Official Community Outreach Program of the series, participants are given direct exposure to potential career paths in high performance motorsports, engineering, media, and technical trades.





At each event, students receive exclusive behind the scenes access, including guided track walks, garage tours, and meet and greet sessions with drivers, teams, and industry professionals. These experiences provide real world insight into the technical, strategic, and business sides of the sport while building meaningful connections within the industry.
The program continues to focus on youth development, particularly within underserved communities, helping participants build confidence, gain direction, and explore positive career paths. Since its inception, the initiative has already helped introduce thousands of students to new opportunities through motorsports.
For 2026, Formula DRIFT is further strengthening its part-
nerships, including continued collaboration with the United States Air Force and the University of Northwestern Ohio, providing additional pathways into education and career development within and beyond the automotive world.

BIO: Three time Formula Drift champion Fredric Aasbo is known for his flat out style. He is the most winning driver in Formula Drift, having achieved the most No. 1 finishes in the pemier USA series and 100 plus podium finishes on thee continents over the past decade of global competition. The driver made his U.S. debut at a global drifting invitational in 2008 and turned heads as the winner of the 2010 Formula Drift Rookie of the Year title. He joined Papadakis Racing in 2011 and since then he has charged through the drifting ranks around the world and is both a fan favorite and championship winner. BIO: Aurimas “Odi” Bakchis, founder and CEO of Feal Suspension, started drifting professionally in 2011 and is now a proven championship contender. He was ranked 2nd overall in the Formula Drift USA championship in 2024 and 2023, and 3rd overall in 2021, 2019, and 2017. BIO: Dan Burkett has been passionate about driving as far back as he can remember, there is no place he would rather be than behind the wheel of anything with a motor! BIO: My driving career started with internet videos and a dream. One day I stumbled across videos online — and instantly, I was hooked. The speed, the angle, the control… it was different from anything I had ever seen. In that moment, I knew I wanted to be part of it. I started saving every dollar I could with one goal in mind: build my own drift car. After a long time of working and sacrificing I finaly bought my first ar — a Nissan 240SX. BIO: Ben Hobson is in his third year with the RTR Vehicles Drift Team behind the wheel of the 2026 Pennzoil Ford Mustang RTR Spec 5 FD. Following his 2023 PROSPEC Championship Ben made the leap to PRO in 2024. In his firs season with RTR he won the Spirit of Drifting award voted on by fellow drivers and crew members acknowledging his passion for drifting and positive attitude. A motorhead since birth, Ben started shredding on his first dirt bie at just four years old. His passion for dirt bikes brought him to competitive stent in the AMA series for many years, but it would be in 2012 when he discovered drifting that his love affair with motorsports kicked into high gear it was like love at first side! He launched his drift career in 2018 competing in the Lonestar Drift pro am series and in 2020 he would become series champion. BIO: Hiroya's passion for cars started at 7 years old when he took the wheel of a JZX100 with an automatic transmission. At 11 years old, Hiroya competed in the MSC Challenge with his mom's car. (Both of Hiroya's parents competed in Formula Drift Japan and are a part of the team HEYMAN.) In 2021 Minowa secured the MSC Challenge series 4th place finish In 2022, Hiroya competed in Formula Drift Japan anded ended ranking 16th overall. Hiroya also claimed victory once again in the D1 divisional series. The following year, Hiroya concluded the 2023 Formula Drift Japan series in 2nd place. In 2024, Hiorya debuted in Formula Drift USA Pro on Jerry Yang Racing team piloting a new Toyota GT86 as a Red Bull athlete. In the 2 years at Formula Drift USA he's achieved Rookie of the year, youngest Formula drift USA Pro Podium Finisher, youngest Formula Drift USA event winner, fan favorite style and 4th place overall in the series in 2024 and 2025. In 2026 Hiroya has moved to Finland, training for rally as part of Toyota's TGR WRT Challenge program gen5. Hiroya will compete again in Formula drift USA, again driving with Jerry Yang Racing in 2026.

BIO: Ryan Tuerck is a leading social influencer and pro racer. A regular podium finisher in ormula Drift, he drives the Papadakis Racing Rain-X Toyota GR Corolla.
