Internationally renowned as a sculptor, Elisabeth Frink was also an extremely fine printmaker producing more than 160 prints between 1964 and 1992. She made lithographs, etchings and, in later years, screenprints. In 1982 Frink was commissioned by the Royal Shakespeare Company to make a colour etching of Antony and Cleopatra to celebrate their production of Shakespeare’s play at The Other Place in Stratford. The title roles were played by Michael Gambon and Helen Mirren and it is they who are depicted in the etching. Frink’s economic lines graphically capture the compelling power of the relationship between the Shakespearian couple with the diminutive, yet seductive and erotic Cleopatra, about to be enfolded in the embrace of the large bear like and lusting figure of Antony. The etching was produced in a limited edition of just 175 copies, each signed in pencil by Frink. It was printed on Velin Arches paper by the renowned Kelpra Studio and impressed with their blindstamp. H.

Initially pochoirs were used to illustrate the fashion for Art Nouveau but by the 1920s they were redolent of Art Deco and the Jazz Age in Paris.

Umberto Brunelleschi Painter, Printmaker & Illustrator (1879-1949) Italian born, Brunelleschi studied art in Florence before moving to Paris in 1900 where he produced caricatures for satirical magazines. He also established himself as a portrait painter and an illustrator in fashion magazines such as Gazette du Bon Ton and Les Feuillets d’Art. After army service in World War I, Brunelleschi returned to Paris and during the 1920s he
designed theatrical costumes for, amongst others, the cabaret performer Josephine Baker, and stage sets at the Folies Bergère, the Casino de Paris and La Scala, Milan. He was also a noted book illustrator, where his work combined elements of 18th century galanteries together with those of the Italian Commedia dell’Arte. He was particularly known for his stylish erotic prints for which he employed the pochoir process.
