Carnaby capers
A couple of Carnaby’s cockatoos have been caught in the act of postal theft.
Cottesloe resident and keen bird photographer Julie Hillin was inside her house in Avonmore Terrace when she heard the unmissable screeching of Carnaby’s at play. With her high-end Nikon in hand, she quietly went outside and lay on the grass to record the pair of bandits at work across the road. One kept lookout while the other grabbed hold of a corner of the POST and worked it out of the letterbox. “I have never seen anything like that,” said keen Carnaby’s observer Margaret Owen. “Birds play to learn, and cockies are very intelligent.” The cocky habit of posting sentries to screech noisily on the approach of danger is the reason that lookouts who were posted around illegal two-up games in old Australia were called cockatoos. ‘Dereliction of duty’ By BEN DICKINSON
Former Nedlands CEO Keri Shannon was sacked over her role in a councillor’s townhouse development, documents obtained by the POST have revealed.
Commissioners announced in February that Ms Shannon had “agreed to part ways” with Nedlands, but one of the state’s top anti-corruption officials says she was in fact “terminated” for “dereliction of her duty”.
A complaint was made to the Corruption and Crime Commission (CCC) last year after Ms Shannon ordered her planning staff to issue a building permit for Carmen and Josephine La Cava’s townhouse development in Alexander Road, Dalkeith. She also waived a requirement for the developer to prepare dilapidation reports on neighbouring properties. The townhouses were designed by architect Blane
Brackenridge, then a Nedlands councillor. Council planners had urged Ms Shannon not to issue the building permit, arguing the project could not possibly satisfy all its approval conditions before its planning approval was due to expire just days later. Months later, an unrelated political feud among some councillors and then-mayor Fiona Argyle boiled over, culminating in a slew of resignations and the appointment of government

Boys lob rock near sleeping girl By BEN DICKINSON
A Floreat mother has accused a group of high school boys of “almost killing” her sleeping daughter by throwing a heavy rock through her bedroom window.
Kirwan Street resident Danika Mullins said a group of teenage boys hurled the large rock around 1am on Sunday, smashing through the window and hitting a bed inside. “You almost killed my daughter who was asleep in my bed,” she wrote in a local social
