Chopper led on wild ride

A North Beach retiree “driven crazy” by the sound of kids playing basketball in his street was the inspiration for a new half-court at Charles Riley Reserve.
A man who led police on a wild chase through Innaloo vanished after running into the Westfield shopping centre on Sunday.
The fugitive remained on the run for three more days, police said, before his arrest in Manning on Wednesday. Kyle Wesley Eades, 31 of Cloverdale, was charged with committing two burglaries in Kenwick and one in Redcliffe on Sunday, as well as a string of credit card frauds in Karrinyup and a theft in South Perth. Police said officers tried to pull over a white Nissan X-trail in Scarborough Beach Road, Osborne Park about 1.20pm that day. The driver allegedly failed to stop, and drove recklessly in an attempt to evade police. “The vehicle was monitored from the air by crews on board a police aircraft before entering the car park of a shopping centre in Innaloo,” police said. Law professor Mel O’Brien said she was passed by a car driving on the wrong side of the road that ran a red light in St Brigids Terrace. “It is very lucky that nobody was injured or worse, • Please turn to page 29

Councillors Tony Krsticevic and Rob Paparde shot the inaugural hoops at the $185,000 facility on Wednesday. It all started by chance with a chat between Mr Krsticevic and a lawn bowler. “I was down at North Beach Bowling Club one evening and one of the regulars pulled me up,” Mr Krsticevic said. “He said ‘Can you build a basketball court somewhere to get rid of these kids? They’re driving me crazy’. “I walked away and thought ‘That’s not a bad idea’.” Councillors voted months later to add the project to their annual budget. The half-court was originally earmarked for a spot near the reserve’s war memorial but was moved south after discussions with the North Beach RSL sub-branch. court last week. Riley was a commando who served in the Pacific during World War II. He drowned at Watermans Bay in 1954, aged 32, while trying to rescue three girls caught in a rip. Sussan Ley, then-deputy Liberal leader, promised federal funds for the court while on a visit to Perth before last year’s election, but the council was forced to come up with the money on its own after the Coalition’s heavy defeat. The new court features a noise-reducing backboard. Stirling is also pushing on with plans for a full-sized court at Lake Gwelup, which was announced last week. Scarborough MP Stuart Aubrey pledged $120,000 for a half-court through the state government’s PlayOn WA program, but Stirling has added another $125,000 to build a fullsized court. Concept plans released for public feedback show the court sitting between the Karrinyup Scout Group building and Lake Gwelup’s tennis courts. Mayor Mark Irwin said basketball had the second-highest participation of any team sport in Australia. “It continues to grow in popularity as more Australians make it to the NBA,” he said.
