Toronto is a city with a lot of love to give I remember a summer or two after moving to Toronto and settling into our first home. A little bungalow north of Greektown. We would walk down to the Danforth most days, but this was different. On this day, Greece had won the UEFA European Championship. The entire neighbourhood was alive. The smell of ouzo and souvlaki filled the streets. Then, out of nowhere, a thunderstorm. Remarkably, restaurants welcomed everyone inside to shelter from the rain. Soaked to the bone, smiles still permanently affixed to faces with a simple but remarkable show of community. Yes, terrible things happen here, and they are heartbreaking. But those moments remind me how resilient Toronto can be. I remember the great blackout of 2003 and how good we were to each other. How even to this day, we celebrate its anniversary on Aug. 16 — not to remember not having power for a few days, but to look back and remember all the goodness we have inside us. I will say, this city is one of the safest of its size in North America. It is remarkably so. The Economist pegged it as the sixth safest global city on the planet in its Safe Cities Index. But it is still a big city with big city problems that are linked to extreme acts of violence: a concentration of poverty, homelessness, marginalization of disadvantaged communities. Yes, there are issues around bail reform and access to illegal firearms from south of the border. There isn’t one simple answer to why this happened, but there must be solutions. What I do know is that the good far outweighs the bad in Toronto. That street festivals and public displays of loving thy neighbour are important and will continue. And, yes, supporting main streets such as St. Clair West where family businesses are reeling from the impacts is vital right now. Because in the end, to me, a city isn't defined by its worst days, but by how we show up for one another on the days that matter most. RON JOHNSON is the editorial director of Post City Magazines.

We could be happier, healthier and more economically secure — if we were to act on the knowledge that many of our problems are related. For example, addressing the climate crisis will also help resolve issues around pollution, health and economic disparity. But we’re not only up against a “polycrisis,” we’re also facing varying degrees of denial. At its most blatant, the United States president has labelled the clear and overwhelming scientific and observable evidence for human-caused climate disruption as a

“hoax” and is promoting polluting, climatealtering fossil fuels over cleaner, more efficient renewable energy. Denial in Canada may not be as blatant, but it’s still dangerous. Carney even boasted that Canada is producing more oil than ever, overtaken only by the U.S. and Russia. It’s absurd. Record high temperatures and humidity are killing hundreds of thousands of people a year worldwide and sending many more to hospitals. Recent heat and storms in Europe have killed thousands. Schools have been closed, productivity hindered, events cancelled and power grids strained. Some European countries have shut down nuclear power plants because

river water has warmed too much to cool them. Insanely, many in the corporate class are even denying or downplaying the severity and reality of heat waves! Canadian taxpayers are sinking millions into carbon capture projects, subsidizing an obscenely profitable industry. But short-term profit for the sake of constantly growing the economy outweighs concerns about the enormous costs. It’s suicidal. Meanwhile, the costs of renewable energy and storage technologies are dropping as efficiency improves, making them more cost-effective than fossil fuels. It’s about power and profit.

Wait, Toronto congestion is improving? So a couple of years back, Ontario Premier Doug Ford’s government used a TomTom traffic report showing Toronto congestion being some of the worst in the world as justification to attempt to destroy the city’s cycling network. He even went as far as passing legislation that severely hampered the city’s ability to manage its own streets. But the bike lanes he attempted to rip out remain. And, in the latest report, congestion has improved. Not dramatically so, but it has improved. It’s curious that Ford is quiet on this front now that the data suggests congestion is improving after existing and some new key bike lanes were left alone. One of the main issues with traffic was the result of the Gardiner Expressway construction. It was and remains a massive headache. But now that it is returning to its normal somewhat bad traffic, many commuters have stopped looking for shortcuts through neighbour-

hoods that created new backlogs, which the Ford government blamed on bike lanes. Another excuse for bike lane attacks is that emergency vehicle response time slows. Again, the data indicates otherwise. Not helping the anti-bike message of Ford and company was Toronto having the worst air quality in the world last July. Yes, wildfires were the cause, but getting some people to leave their cars at home and take sustainable transportation options is crucial. The bottom line: Toronto Bike Share is a massive success with millions of trips, food delivery riders are everywhere and there are many more bike commuters being added to city streets each year. And these all take cars off the road and help ease congestion and make our streets safer for all. That’s the reality despite what some might suggest without evidence. Ford should acknowledge he was wrong. Again. —Ron Johnson

Iconic area restaurant Auberge du Pommier

Hogg’s Hollow cottages protected A pair of tiny cottages tucked beside an office complex on Yonge Street, just north of York Mills Road, might be easy to miss at first glance, but they’ve been around since about 1860. Now, the city is taking steps to make sure they stick around. In late July, Toronto City Council voted to move forward with granting 4150 Yonge St. formal heritage protection under the Ontario Heritage Act. The property is currently home to Auberge du Pommier, the upscale French restaurant that has operated out of the historic cottages since 1987. Long before diners were sitting down for French cuisine, though, the cottages were homes for workers and their families. According to city documents, the buildings were originally located at 22 and 26 John St. and were two of three cottages built by local carpenter Robert Gray. They were constructed shortly after John and William Hogg (whose family name lives on in Hogg’s Hollow) filed plans in 1856 to develop a new community in the area. The larger community they envisioned never fully developed, but the cottages remained homes for more than a century, housing millworkers, trades-

people and other York Mills residents over the years. In the 1980s, the area was being redeveloped into an office park. Instead of being demolished, the two surviving cottages were preserved, moved to their current location and restored before being joined together and converted into a restaurant. A spokesperson for the City of Toronto explained that the cottages represent “the optimism and development of York Mills in the mid-nineteenth century” and serve as reminders of the area’s milling, industrial and working-class history. The cottages are also examples of the Ontario Cottage style, a simple 19th-century style once common across southern Ontario. The homes were typically one storey, with a door in the middle and windows on either side. A heritage designation would allow the city to enforce standards aimed at preserving their historic features, including the cedar-shake roofs, wood windows and doors and rough stucco exteriors. The city has issued a Notice of Intention to Designate, so any objections were scheduled to be submitted by July 27. —Nisean Lorde

City puts pin on the map for new Little Iran district The stretch of Yonge Street between North York and Thornhill has long been known as Little Iran. Now, it's official. Little Iran has been named one of Toronto’s first five Cultural Districts under a new city program designed to recognize neighbourhoods with strong cultural identities while helping protect them from redevelopment and commercial displacement. It joins Little Jamaica, West Chinatown, Church-Wellesley Village and Banglatown as the inaugural districts recognized under the Cultural Districts Program, which grew out of community advocacy work as well as ongoing concerns about the loss of culturally significant businesses and local character. The program offers formal recognition and capacity-building support for community organizations, with the city also exploring future measures. City councillor Lily Cheng said the effort began with residents who had long viewed the area as the cultural heart of Toronto's Iranian community. "It started with community advocacy," Cheng said. "People in the neighbourhood have long seen it as Little Iran." She said the recognition is about more than businesses. "It's about see-

ing yourself in your city," she said, recalling how growing up she connected with her own heritage through visits to Chinatown. Cheng said the idea was first brought to her by community advocate David Mousavi, who had pushed for the neighbourhood to receive official recognition. She said the designation was meaningful enough that Iranian community leaders filled the council chamber when the motion was approved.

"It benefits not only the businesses that are there, but also the broader area because now it's something we can also market." Earlier this summer, the city and community members marked the designation with a celebration at Centre Park, one of the neighbourhood's largest public gathering spaces. Cheng said the recognition has already helped build momentum for new community-led initiatives

and festivals celebrating the diversity of Iranian culture. Though the recognition doesn't come with major funding, Cheng said it immediately raises the neighbourhood's profile. "It helps put a pin on the map," she said, adding that Destination Toronto has already discussed including Little Iran in its tourism marketing. Local businesses have embraced the designation, and community groups are organizing new events, including the Iranian Ethnic Festival, scheduled for late last month. The next opportunity could be establishing Little Iran as a Business Improvement Area, making it easier to co-ordinate events and streetscape improvements. A steering committee is exploring creating one, though Cheng acknowledged it will take time. "It's a challenge," she said. "But a BIA would really strengthen our ability to make it a living neighbourhood." The city is also conducting planning studies in Little Jamaica and West Chinatown to explore ways of preserving cultural heritage while supporting affordable retail and guiding future development. —Ron Johnson

Yorkville to be city’s new heritage district? Toronto and East York Community Council has voted in favour of a plan to study the Yorkville Village Core as a potential Heritage Conservation District, sending the recommendation to Toronto City Council for final consideration. The motion, adopted without amendment at the community council's July 8 and 9 meeting, authorizes city staff to go ahead with a formal Heritage Conservation District (HCD) study under the Ontario Heritage Act. And, according to a letter of support from three local residents associations, the community is supportive of new measures to protect the unique historical character of Yorkville. “The Yorkville Village Core occupies a unique place at the heart of Toronto. From its origins as the nineteenth-century Village of Yorkville to its evolution into one of Canada's most recognized destinations for music, culture, commerce, and tourism, it has helped shape the identity of the city for generations. The recommendation before community council represents the culmination of years of research, public consultation, and community advocacy toward recognizing and protecting that legacy,” reads the letter. The public consultation also

demonstrated strong community support for moving this work forward. With summer winding to a close and autumn just around the corner, many Canadians are looking to escape into nature before the cold winter temperatures begin. While hiking and camping trips can be wonderful opportunities to connect with nature and friends, safety should always be your #1 priority when embarking on an outdoor journey. At Diamond & Diamond, we have seen enough preventable incidents to know that safety measures are critical when planning a camping trip or hike. Sandra Zisckind, Managing Partner at Diamond Law, discusses some helpful tips to keep in mind before you hit the road: 1. Ensure Access to Clean Drinking Water While you may be tempted to fully immerse yourself in nature by drinking the water out of a pristine stream, it’s important to resist these urges. However beautiful a lake or stream may appear, these bodies of

water are packed full of bacteria that can be harmful to your health. “Clean drinking water is a necessity for hiking and camping trips,” says Sandra Zisckind. “If bottled water isn’t available, purification methods like filters or purification tablets are essential tools to keep in your bag to avoid waterborne illnesses.” 2. Opt for Proper Footwear Some of the most common missteps leading to slip and fall incidents start with inadequate footwear. Hiking and camping are demanding activities that require appropriate footwear designed for rugged terrains. “Investing in suitable footwear for outdoor activities is investing in your physical safety,” says Sandra Zisckind. Heading out on a dry hike? Ensure you bring closed-toe shoes with a firm grip to prevent trips, slips and falls. For river or water hikes, it’s worth investing in water shoes to keep your footing on precarious ground.

3. Plan Around Access to Communication If you are planning to hike or camp in a remote area, it’s important to ensure you have access to communication channels should something happen. A cell phone is a minimum requirement, but letting someone know your plans and where you are staying ahead of time is also important. Don’t forget to bring a compass and make sure to set a predetermined meeting place should you get separated from your peers without a method of communication!

Monitor Weather Conditions Awareness of impending weather changes is crucial to avoid hazards like landslides, avalanches or tornadoes. “Checking the weather forecast is a ritual every camper should adopt. Staying informed allows you to plan and adapt to changing conditions safely,” adds Zisckind. So we actually think there's going to be a significant issue for the average renter in about 12 to 18 months from today, and then we think that's going to persist for about three to four years until they start getting mass new supply coming into the market. We have two very strong tailwinds happening in the market. One is that actual immigration is going up. The data consensus right now is simply that that population is decreasing, but that assumes all the non-permanent

there comes a point where you have to stop consuming and start creating your own stuff. Chachu came out of that transition. I think my thesis for this was essentially like identity isn’t something that you recover from the past, but something that you write through your own stories.

Where did the idea for Chachu start?

I had such an intense three years of my life after I was plucked out of Markham obscurity into Marvel. After all that, I was just feeling some creative restlessness. I didn't want to wait around for Hollywood to dictate when I got to be creative next. All the roles I remember getting after Ms. Marvel were the same character. I realized it’s up to the artist to keep marching to the beat of your own drum. So I dove into movies, and I was rewatching Robert Altman's The Long Goodbye, which I think is the epitome of cool. But that made me realize that people who look like me have never really gotten to be the focus for those kinds of stories. The neonoir and private investigator trope existed for just white men. I wanted to scratch that itch, and I wanted to know what a story like that would look like but from the perspective of a 19-year-old brown girl.

What was it like tapping into those writing instead of acting skills?

Honestly, if I was getting the roles that I wanted, then I wouldn't have started writing. The studio was filled with blue chairs, Persian carpets and a simple red couch for us to marry on. Sasha’s paintings hung on the walls, and baskets of flowers were suspended from the ceiling. It was simple, elegant and steeped in beauty and love. Later that night, the chairs were moved aside, Persian music filled the space, and everyone danced. We spent our honeymoon in Italy, travelling for three weeks through Rome, Florence and Ischia. How they met

We first met in 1985 at a conference where we were both presenting. We attended each other’s talks and were immediately drawn to a shared interest in beauty, spirituality and the arts. We were both intrigued, but each assumed the other wouldn’t be interested. I was quite serious and formal. Sasha was more bohemian and freespirited. At the time, we were living in different countries. I was working as an architect on the Guggenheim addition in New York, and Sasha was teaching painting at a university while finishing her thesis. We didn’t see each other again for two years, until we ran into each other in a hotel lobby in Toronto. I had been meant to be in New York that day but changed my plans the night before — and ended up in that lobby that morning.

We are quite different people in many ways, but we deeply respect — and even rely on — those differences. And because we are both deeply engaged in creative processes, we understand that a marriage, like any meaningful work, evolves over time. Bite-Sized Q&A With this month's release of ‘Tony,’ we talk with the chef who brought Bourdain to T.O. for the first time Anthony Bourdain's life is getting the Hollywood treatment this month in Matthew Johnson's biopic Tony. Ahead of its release, we caught up with Beast Pizza's Scott Vivian, the Toronto chef whose chance encounter with Bourdain helped put Toronto on his TV show The Layover’s map.

If you were giving Anthony a 48-hour food tour today, where are you taking him?

Tony said if he ever had the chance, he'd come back and check out Beast. I told him I wasn't trying to promote my restaurant — I just wanted to show him how special Toronto's food scene was. I think that resonated because he said that, when the opportunity came up, he'd come back and "do TV" with me. What was he like when cameras weren't rolling?

He was basically the same on and off camera — calm, collected and well-spoken. He just had this aura of coolness about him. He was a bit hungover the day we filmed, so there was that too.

What advice would you give Matt Johnson on making the film's kitchen scenes feel real?

I'd tell him to spend time in professional kitchens before, during and after service. The standard portrayal of fire, yelling and chaos makes for good TV, but plenty of kitchens — including Beast Pizza — run calmly, like welloiled machines.

What’s the single best piece of advice Tony ever gave you?

FOOD

When you first told Anthony he had to come to Toronto, what was his reaction?

I think he'd love Sunnys Chinese for its attention to detail and regional Chinese cuisine. Barberian's Steak House would be another. I think he'd appreciate the history of the room as much as chef Jesse's honest cooking. I'd definitely take him to Lake Inez. The vibe is perfect and the food is original, whimsical and f**kin’ delicious. We'd spend a day on Geary Avenue too: lunch at Familia Baldassarre, a beer at Blood Brothers, ice cream at Good Behaviour, dinner at General Public and finish the night with a few wobbly pops at the Greater Good.

Tiny noodle lab opens in North York Fat Zhu Noodle Lab has officially opened in North York, bringing just six counter seats, three tables and a tightly focused menu of Hong Kong– style wonton noodles and slow-braised beef brisket. The new spot comes from Eddie Yeung, the chef behind Markham's longtime favourite Wonton Hut. Born and trained in Hong Kong, Yeung spent more than a decade apprenticing under a traditional wonton noodle master before moving to Canada and opening Wonton Hut in 2010. Though Yeung has spent years building his reputation in

Markham and recently expanded with another Wonton Hut location downtown, North York has always held a special place for him. Though he's built Wonton Hut into a Markham destination, North York is where Yeung spent much of his teenage years after moving to Canada, making the opening something of a homecoming. That experience helped inspire Fat Zhu, a stripped-down concept where the focus is squarely on the bowl in front of you. House-made alkaline noodles, slow-simmered broths and classic Cantonese techniques are the foundation of the

It’s time to Greek out, Toronto

It’s wild to think one of Toronto's biggest food festivals started because a handful of Greektown restaurateurs decided to split an advertising bill. A few decades later, it was setting Guinness World Records with a 1,600-pound bowl of yogurt and nearly 8,000 people dancing the Zorba down Danforth Avenue. After two years without it, August in Toronto has felt strangely incomplete. We missed the smoky scent of souvlaki hanging over the avenue, live music spilling onto every corner and strangers linking arms for impromptu Greek dancing. We missed squeezing through shoulder-to-shoulder crowds, trying to decide which stand deserved our last few dollars and spotting the legendary pitmaster in the cowboy hat

turning those giant spits of meat. We even missed those moments when you set out for one quick bite and somehow ended up spending the entire afternoon wandering the Danforth. That's the thing about this festival: you never really stick to the plan, and that's half the fun. The good news is that we don’t have to wait much longer. Taste of the Danforth returns Aug. 7 to 9, and we couldn't be happier to see it back. Streets of Toronto is proud to be the festival's official media sponsor as one of the city's favourite traditions returns.
