Chautauqua County is built for people who want to get outside. Whether you prefer a quiet walk beneath a forest canopy, a scenic bike ride that links communities, a trail run after work, or a paddle that puts you close to wildlife and shoreline views, there are opportunities in every corner of the county. With more than 250 miles of recreational trails across the region and five different lakes with 100+ miles of shoreline, residents and visitors can choose a new route or location for a day of adventure that combines trails, water, and small town stops along the way.

The strength of the county’s outdoor network is its variety and accessibility. Trailheads range from family friendly paths close to population centers to longer routes that feel like a true escape, with quiet woods, open views, and room to explore at your own pace. Depending on where you start, an outing might include shaded forest corridors, wetlands and creek crossings, lake views, or trail segments that create a sense of connection between villages, parks, and natural areas. In many cases, it is easy to pair a trail experience with nearby shops, cafes, and main street districts, turning a simple walk or ride into a half day or full day experience.

Planning is also simpler than ever thanks to the Chautauqua County Interactive Trails Map. This tool helps users find trails by activity, including hiking, biking, paddling or rowing, horseback riding, and more, and sort options by landowner or manager. The map makes it easier to compare locations, choose outings that match experience level, and discover places you may not have visited before, even if you have lived in the county for years. For visitors, it provides a practical way to explore confidently without guesswork, and for residents it helps reveal how much is available close to home.

Trails projects in Chautauqua County are undertaken by a variety of organizations and municipalities. Several of these groups work together through the Friends of the Chautauqua County Greenways, an initiative of the Chautauqua County Partnership for Economic Grow that works to preserve, maintain, and improve trails and outdoor recreation opportunities across Chautauqua County. Each member organization has its own goal and mission, but through the Friends group, they also work together to leverage resources and make a stronger impact.

Together, the Friends of the Chautauqua County Greenways supports trail stewardship, improved access, and a stronger outdoor culture that benefits both residents and visitors. Each organization contributes a unique perspective and skill set, and their combined efforts help strengthen trail connections, continued on page 10

improve user experiences, and encourage responsible use of the natural resources that make outdoor recreation possible.

Friends of the Chautauqua County Greenways Members

Chautauqua Rails to Trails is an all-volunteer nonprofit that has worked since 1991 to convert and maintain rail trails for public recreation. These shared use corridors support walking, running, biking, and nature observation while connecting communities and scenic areas, especially in the northern half of the county. The organization’s volunteer stewardship helps keep trails safe, welcoming, and accessible for a wide range of users.

The Western New York Mountain Bicycling Association supports sustainable shared use trail systems through trail work, education, and advocacy. The group helps build and maintain mountain bike experiences while promoting responsible use and trail etiquette that benefits all users. Their involvement also supports long term trail quality and durability across public lands.

Boutwell Hill Ski Club is a volunteer organization that supports trail stewardship in and around Boutwell Hill State Forest. Through hands on involvement and ongoing care for trail resources, the club helps keep this scenic area of the Chautauqua Ridge maintained and welcoming, while contributing to the broader network of public places available for outdoor recreation.

The Chautauqua County Equestrian Trail System promotes the county as an equestrian destination with interconnected riding experiences across multiple trail areas and partners. CCETS supports ongoing trail improvement and safe shared use riding across a variety of landscapes, helping ensure

that equestrian recreation remains an accessible and well managed option within the county’s broader trail system.

The Chautauqua County Parks Department manages public park resources and supports outdoor recreation through park access, amenities, and res ervations where applicable. County parks also serve as convenient gateways to trails and natural areas, giving families and visitors clear starting points for short walks, longer excursions, and group outings. Parks play an important role as community gathering spaces and as hubs within the regional outdoor network.

Chautauqua Watershed Conservancy protects water quality and habitat through land conservation, stewardship, and education. The conservancy manages more than 35 nature preserves in Chautauqua County, many open to the public for walking and nature observation, while also protecting sensitive lands for the long term. These preserves add depth to the outdoor experience by offering places where people can connect with nature in quieter, more reflective settings.

The City of Jamestown has long embraced outdoor recreation through its public parks and the Greater Jamestown Riverwalk trail system. The Riverwalk highlights the Chautauqua Lake outlet and the Chadakoin River while offering residents and visitors ways to experience the waterfront on foot or by bike. The city is also exploring additional outdoor amenities, including a proposed beginner and ADA compliant bike pump track and an advanced pump track at Jackson Taylor Park, which would expand local riding opportunities and create another active recreation destination.

Chautauqua County’s trail and outdoor recreation network continues to grow stronger through collaboration, stewardship, and consistent community support. Whether your ideal outing is a calm walk through a preserve, a family ride on a rail trail, a paddle in quiet waters, a trail run, an equestrian ride, or a group activity, the county’s outdoor assets are ready.

CHQ Trails Day Returns in 2026

Finally, one of the many ways to experience the county’s trail culture is through CHQ Trails Day, presented by the Friends of the Chautauqua County Greenways. In 2025, the inaugural CHQ Trails Day was held on Saturday, June 21, with a countywide mix of guided hikes, group rides, paddles, and other trail focused opportunities designed to welcome newcomers and celebrate regular trail users alike.

Looking ahead, the Friends Group will once again hold a CHQ Trails Day event in 2026 on Saturday, June 20. While specific details for the 2026 event are not yet available, the purpose remains the same - make it easy and inviting for people to get outside, sample new trail experiences, and learn about the organizations working year round to keep these opportunities strong. Once details are finalized, they will be posted online at ChooseCHQ.com/CHQTrailsDay.

Graycliff

Perched along the Lake Erie shoreline in Derby, New York, Graycliff remains one of Western New York’s most breathtaking architectural treasures. Designed in 1926 by Frank Lloyd Wright for Isabelle and Darwin D. Martin, the estate reflects Wright’s masterful integration of structure and landscape, where limestone, glass, and water meet in quiet harmony.

Just a short 20-minute drive from Buffalo, Graycliff offers visitors a chance to step into a uniquely serene environment, where sweeping lake views and thoughtfully designed spaces create an experience that feels both intimate and expansive. As a New York State Landmark listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the site continues to serve as a place of inspiration, education, and preservation.

In 2026, Graycliff enters its Centennial Years, marking 100 years since Wright completed the original design for the Martin family’s summer retreat. This milestone begins a three-year celebration (2026–2028) honoring the estate’s full story – from its design in 1926, to the start of construction in 1927, and finally to the Martin family’s first summer on the property in 1928.

The Centennial also ushers in an exciting new chapter with the opening of Graycliff’s Visitor Center, a historic milestone that enhances the guest experience while strengthening the site’s role as a dynamic hub for community connection, events, preservation, and learning.

The community favorite Market at Graycliff also returns for its eighth season, running Thursday evenings from 5-8pm, July 9–September 3. This sea sonal Market showcases local vendors whose goods are made across the eight counties of Western New York, offering a vibrant celebration of regional produce, goods, and crafts. Guests are invited to browse the lineup of artisans, enjoy live music and food, and embark on a self-guided tour of the restored main floor of Graycliff’s historic main house. To tour the “Chautauqua County Grape & Grain Trail”, you’ll of course need a designated driver or a hired transportation company. Lake Erie Wine Country asks groups of eight or more to make reservations in advance as some wineries have small tasting rooms with limited staff. You may purchase tastings at each winery for a small fee, and then please purchase a bottle of your favorite wine to bring home. Plan an hour at each winery for the tasting and shopping.

Noble Winery is known for its fantastic view of vast acres of grapes framed by Lake Erie. Also, you can follow a storm form and move down the lake. If lucky, you will even spot a waterspout or two.

THE WINE

Noble Winery has a wine for every palate, all made at the winery with locally grown grapes. You have choices of dry crisp whites, savory dry reds, semi-sweet and sweet white, pink or red wines. All of the wines are flavorful and clean tasting with some varieties that very few people have tried. Customer favorites include Rock Candy, Sexy Sangrias and our house made slushies.

At Noble Winery you are allowed to bring any food you would like or purchase one of our cheese/meat selections to enjoy with our wine. There is plenty of seating either indoors or outdoors. Indoors we have tables and chairs with a beautiful fire place to cozy up to. Outdoors we offer 150 feet of porch with tables, chairs and picnic tables with a beautiful view to boot. Dogs are allowed to visit us outside as long as they are friendly. Children are always welcome and we have non-alcoholic drinks for sale.

Savage Winery started with a hobby and a vision. The owner and vintner, Rich Byington, began as a wine hobbyist interested in producing concord wine for family and friends. This interest began to grow as positive feedback and encouragement came rolling in. Woodcock Brothers Brewing, a supporter from the start, encouraged Rich to take his business commercial. Hidden Valley Animal Adventure

Ever dream of feeding a zebra? How about an ostrich or petting an elk? Well, you can, on a safari tour at Hidden Valley Animal Adventure in nearby Varysburg, New York. One of the most unique attractions in Western New York, Hidden Valley Animal Adventure, is a 63-acre safari park nestled in the hills of Wyoming County. Calarco’s Italian Restaurant was started as a small grocery store in 1930 by Virginio and Jenny Calarco. Four years later, Papa turned it into a bar with a mug of beer costing only 5 cents. In 1970 he bought the dry cleaners next door and turned it into the

Grape Discovery Center

The Grape Discovery Center is the official Visitor’s Center for the Lake Erie Concord Grape Belt, designated a New York State Heritage Area in 2006. Developed by the Concord Grape Belt Heritage Association, it seeks to be an experiential destination that supports and promotes the grape industry through sharing stories and engaging, educating and informing the public about all things grape. Admission to the Center is Free and Wi-Fi is available. Donations are graciously accepted.

The Concord Grape Belt is located along the southeastern shores of Lake Erie in western New York and northwestern Pennsylvania, and is the largest and oldest Concord grape growing region in the world. The Concord grape is native to North America, and was first selected and propagated from wild seedlings by Ephraim Bull in Concord, Massachusetts in 1849. It was brought to western New York in the 1870’s where climate, geography, and soils proved to be very suitable to its production.

Established in 2004, the Concord Grape Belt Heritage Association is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization of grape growers, juice processors and wineries, related grape industry businesses and regional organizations. Our mission is to encourage and support the grape and wine industries within the region, and to enhance the region’s quality of life. In May, 2013, the Grape Discovery Center was opened by the Heritage Association as a showcase for local grape-related products, and as a venue for sharing the rich history and culture of the region.

Tasting Bar. Enjoy a glass of wine or grape juice with friends in the Tasting Bar or on the Steve Baran Memorial Patio nestled beside a Concord vineyard. The Tasting Bar features local artisanal cheeses, cured meats, snacks, grape juice, and a weekly selection of wines from Lake Erie Wine Country.

Walk through the Star Family Exhibit Room to learn the story of the Concord grape and 150 years of grape growing in the Lake Erie region. Explore the history and science of grape growing, and the lifestyle of those in the industry.

Niagara Wine Trail

When people think about visiting wineries, they often think about coming in the fall. The leaves are turning, we’re harvesting the fruit. It is a spectacular time of year. However, we hope people are aware that the 12 wineries along the Niagara Wine Trail are open year-round! Anytime is perfect for a visit.

The Niagara Wine Trail was created in 2002 and has grown since then. We currently have 12 winery members. Twelve wineries means 12 different wine lists and presentations. Think of us like a craft fair. There are all kinds of locally made products, but each booth is a little different. Who are the members of the wine trail?

Founding member Niagara Landing Wine Cellars opened on Mother’s Day in 1999. The rest of the wineries, in alphabetical order are:

Honeymoon Trail Winery offers a wide selection of award winning wines from dry to sweet, fruit wines, ice wine and port, carefully crafted using the finest NY State ingredients.

Long Cliff Winery established in 2011, is the testament of a lifetime of love & labor from the three generation DeMaison Family Farm.

Mayer’s Lake Ontario Winery in Hilton offers a bistro, so you can enjoy wine tasting and a meal.

Schulze Vineyards and Winery is family members run and operated our Winery. They take great pride in our heritage and believe it positively affects the quality of the wine we produce.

Victorianbourg Wine Estate features a variety of wines and has a unique chocolate pairing available.

Vizcarra Vineyards at Becker Farms has a variety of experiences for all family members. They also have craft beers at Becker Brewing.

The Winery at Marjim Manor, where history and charm surround you, is a haunted location. Serving both fruit and grape wines, they can regale you with stories about the mysterious goings on.

As a group, the members participate in various ticketed events throughout the year. Be Wine with Wine celebrates Valentines Day. Vino as the Casino is a joint event at the Batavia Downs. The Red House Serves as Barn Wedding Venue With a Step Back in Time

The RED (Retreat Event Destination) House in Cassadaga is a living piece of Chautauqua County’s past.

“I always feel shear relaxation and comfort when I come onto the property. The area I get the most internal feelis when I cross the threshold into the kitchen,” says Nancy, the current owner. “I just wish the building could talk and I could learn more.”

She thinks about the women and their families who lived in the beautiful home and worked their farms with no indoor plumbing or electricity and wonders what their lives were like.

The elegant 19th century Victorian manor, with seven fireplaces, was built by the Denny Family in 1860. It is a very well preserved example of the detailed structures of the time with transom windows, bay windows and crafted hardwood floors.

Over the years the house has served many purposes. At one time it was the Homecroft Inn and at another it was connected to the Lily Dale Sanitarium. Also in it’s past it served as a reflection room and played an important role in the Freemason’s initiation ceremonies. Another interesting feature that used to exist at the house was a tunnel leading to Cassadaga Lake.

An open staircase decorated with dental crown molding work, is located inside the double front doors. Several bedrooms with fireplaces are found on the second level. A third-floor ballroom is often used to take pictures because of lighting and unique windows. Guests who climb the stairs to the cupola see the grounds from a very different perspective and may see the deer and turkey that sometimes roam below.

The most popular use of the manor today is for the bride and groom to get ready on their big day, with the bride and her attendants using the front of the house and the groom and groomsmen using two rooms in the rear of the house that used to be the quarters for the hired help. There is a front and back staircase, so the groom doesn’t accidentally see his bride before the ceremony. Since 2022 the manor is also available for overnight stays for those visiting the area

The barn is the reception hot spot and if inclement weather brings the ceremony indoors if is a beautiful back drop for the ceremony. It is the perfect setting for formal or informal celebrations. The current barn was built in 1910, after the first one burned. It was built from blocks made by the Cassadaga Block Company which were made from gravel from Cassadaga Lake. The beams are built with peg construction and give a cathe-

dral like feeling to second floor. The original eleva tor which utilizes a pulley system is a carryover from the old barn. Chandeliers light both floors. A covered open loft in the back brings in the outdoors through the big swing doors that mirror those in the front of the barn. With the amazing manor and rustic barn the property is a great mix of the eloquence and casual comfort to the setting that is nestled on six parklike acres framed by deep woods. They have been the magical backdrop for a decade of wedding ceremonies and receptions.

Dunkirk Lighthouse

The Dunkirk Lighthouse is celebrating the 151 anniversary of the Keeper’s house and tower this year. The house and tower were built in their current location in 1875. There has been a working lighthouse on the property since 1826. The museum has been open since 1984.

The first floor of the house is set up for visitors to get a feeling of what life would have been like between 1875 and 1960 when the keeper and his family lived in the house. The second-floor bedrooms have been turned into a military museum. Each room is a different branch of the armed forces. Each room contains several cases of artifacts from the different wars and eras. The Coast Guard Building has artifacts donated by the Coast Guard along with artifacts located in Lake Erie from sunken ships. There are also artifacts from the Navy and other branches.

Museum tours begin in the gift shop. Tours cost $10 per person unless you are over the age of 55, a veteran, or a student, the cost for those visitors is $8. Children from 5-10 years of age are $3. Children under 5 are free.

There is a Pavilion on the property that can be rented out for wedding, reunions, parties of any sort. It has a capacity of 150 people. The pavilion has electricity and canvas rolldown sides. on the grounds much earlier in the morning and often long after 5pm. Their dedicated sales team is always a phone call or text away, gladly accepting appointments outside of normal business hours. The marina staff goes above and beyond to keep boats on the water during the summer months that matter. Each new boat sold has a (PDI) Pre-Delivery Inspection by the owner. This consists of about two hours of putting your new boat on the water, making sure it is 100% water ready and worry free when you pick it up. It is then topped off with a full tank of gas and a safety kit that makes you and your vessel Coast Guard Compliant.

Our goal is 100% customer satisfaction, building relationships, and ultimately making new friends. We are proud stewards of Chautauqua Lake, The Chadakoin River and Chautauqua County. We enjoy introducing visitors to what Chautauqua Region has to offer as well as connecting local residents to new experiences on the water.

The Heart of the Valley is the perfect name for this new Gift and Goods shop in Cassadaga Valley. We feature many local vendors whose products do, indeed, come from the heart. You can find handmade quilts, beautiful jewelry, greeting cards, fresh farm goods, chainsaw carvings, books by local authors, colorful Spring ceramics, t-shirts, sweat shirts, pillows and so much more!

This shop opened in February in the old Community Bank space located next door to Shurfine but has just recently moved to 17 S. Main Street located next to the 3 Lakes Café. We have settled in nicely and are eager to welcome everyone to stop by and check out our new home.

Although the concept of bringing vendors together in one location is not a new one, it is a new type of business in the area and the community has been very supportive and welcoming. I look forward to many years of growth and success knowing I can provide something a bit different in our little part of Chautauqua County.

NY’S Oldest Estate Winery, Innovative and Award Winning High-Quality Wines

Johnson Estate’s Tasting Room, located in a 1920s apple cold-storage building built by the first generation of Johnsons; was renovated to provide a special view, through a ceiling-high glass wall, to some of the stainless-steel tanks used in our wine production. That glass wall provides the framework for the story of Johnson Estate which includes a rich authentic heritage, starting with the first generation, to the current innovative and consistently high-quality wines (and service) by the third generation of Johnsons and their team.

The History of Johnson Estate, Remember the Number Three

The history of Johnson Estate Winery is a story of threes; three generations, three buildings and three types of grapes. In the late 1800s, an English orphan named Frederick Johnson immigrated to Western Canada from England as a teenager. In 1896 he found his way to Cornell University to study entomology and later worked for the Department of Agriculture. In 1911, Johnson purchased a 1820s home and farm in Westfield, New York and planted fruit orchards as well as Concord and Niagara vineyards. According to family lore, Johnson started making wine in the basement of the farmhouse during Prohibition. In 1920, he built an apple cold storage facility that now houses the winery’s tasting room.

Second-generation family member, Frederick Spencer Johnson, grew up on the farm and served in World War II as a naval aviator, graduated from Cornell= University in 1946, and then raised his family overseas while working for the Rockefellers’ agricultural endeavors in Latin America. He returned to the farm in 1960 after his father died, removed the aging fruit orchards, and planted the first wine grapes in Western New York. Like Dr. Frank in the Finger Lakes, Frederick Johnson was the pioneer in WNY who understood that its special Germanic microclimate was excellent for wine grapes. He opened the winery in 1961 in his father’s apple cold storage building becoming the state’s oldest estate winery, supported NYS’s Farm Winery Act passed in 1976, and built a new tank building in the early ‘80s.

Upon his death in 1998, the third generation of Johnsons, Frederick Jr., Elizabeth and Anthony, all Cornell graduates, inherited the farm. They planted new Riesling vineyards and constructed a finished goods warehouse. In early 2011, Frederick Johnson Jr., with his wife Jennifer, purchased his siblings’ interests in the farm and winery. They completed a renovation of the tasting room later than year, just in time for the celebration of the winery’s 50th anniversary. The farm, owned by the same family for over one-hundred years, was awarded a Century Farm designation from the New York State Agricultural Society in 2018.

From Bud to Bottle – Estate-Grown Grapes to Award-Winning Wines

The team at Johnson Estate, led by Owners Fred and Jennifer Johnson and Winemaker Jeff Murphy, pays attention to all of the right details, from “bud to bottle”. The winery, celebrating its 65th year in 2026, produces, innovative, and high-quality award-winning wines - over forty vintages, from dry to sweet, made from the thirteen varieties of grapes grown on 110 acres of Estate vineyards. These include European Classics such as Riesling, Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay, now grown on the Estate, as well as dry rosés, fortified and ice wines.

May Wine – A Creative Example – New Vintage Every Spring Jeff Murphy has been Johnson Estate’s Winemaker for over twenty years during which time he has introduced over 2 dozen award-winning wines to the Estate’s portfolio. He has a degree from Pennsylvania State University in Food Science and Enology

and prior to joining Johnson Estate, had worked at Glenora Wine Cellars and two other New York wineries. In a terroir which excels in growing Germanic varieties, Jeff has a palate and preference for making wines which accentuate the estate-grown grapes’ best attributes. He is inspired by German food and wine culture to the produce European and Germanic style wines which best express our “terroir”. There is no better example that our sparkling Vidal Blanc May Wine, which is infused with dried sweet woodruff. This wine, inspired by Germany’s May Day celebrations, mimics their white wine punches, as a German friend said once – it’s “Mai Wein in a bottle”. The new May wine vintage will be released each spring!

While the winter was impressively cold and the spring weather worrisome for growing grapes due to early bud break and potential freezes, Johnson Estate’s commencement of its 65th anniversary year has been good. In April, the winery was awarded ten Gold Medal awards, spanning a range of wines (sparkling, aromatic whites, dry Rieslings, and red blends) including four with Best of Class designations at the Los Angeles International Wine Competition, the longest wine competition in the USA, operating since 1935. In addition, the winery’s second vintage of Sparkling Rosé Ice Wine, released just this spring, was rated Exceptional, 94 Points by the Beverage Testing Institute/Tastings.com. This wine is very special - it is the only “methode champenoise” (secondary fermentation in the bottle) ice wine made in North America. These awards reflect New York’s oldest estate winery’s commitment to quality, craftmanship, and the expression of our region’s unique Germanic terroir which is achieved by the hard work of our dedicated team.

Ravlin Hill Archery Your Source for All Your Archery Needs

Hailing from a new address these days, Ravlin Hill Archery is raring to go as the 2026 hunting & fishing season approaches.

The shop, owned and operated by Daniel Burkholder, relocated this past summer from its original site on Ravlin Hill Road to the current facility situated at 7938 Route 474, Panama, N.Y. The move became necessary when the business outgrew its previous space.

The 30,000-square-foot facility, which took several months to build, includes not only the store itself but also a warehouse for storage, a seed room stocked with items for food plot preparation, a kitchen and lounge area for employees and three separate indoor shooting ranges that are available for public use.

Farmers and landowners will sometimes plant what are called “food plots,” which are used as a supplementary food source for wildlife and also attract different animals — usually deer or turkeys — to the area. In New York and Pennsylvania, it is legal to hunt over a food plot, so long as there are no additional minerals or grains being used to intentionally bait the deer.

Each of the shooting ranges at Ravlin Hill Archery are set up a little differently. One has simple targets set at 60 yards or closer for the purpose of sighting in an archer’s bow and ensuring accuracy. The second is full of life-size 3D animal decoys that shooters can use as target prac tice once their bow is sighted in. The third, a 20-yard range often referred to as a “spot room,” is used for spot leagues, or archery shooting competitions, during the winter months. It is also where instructional classes will be held.

Sighting in a bow is a process used to ensure proper mechanical performance at different distances. It involves checking that the sights, or accessories used for aiming, are aligned correctly so they can provide the shooter with an accurate reference point. This increases the chance that the arrow will reach the intended target with a precise landing.

Individuals don’t have to own a bow to make use of the shooting ranges, as bows are available for rent as well. Instruction courses are also offered, where beginners can come and learn the basics of archery, including safety tips.

The business was started by Daniel’s father, Jonas, in May of 1994.

“We feel blessed and extremely thankful to continue where he left off,” Daniel said.

The store is now run by four full-time and four part-time employees. We are very fortunate to have staff with high energy levels and lots of enthusiasm.

The customer base, spans all the way to Tonawanda, N.Y. (near Buffalo) and even into Ohio — a radius of roughly 100 miles. At one point, individuals from 23 different states had been through the store.

One of the most popular products are hunting blinds, which are on display along the outside wall. Hunters use these portable structures to camouflage themselves in the woods so the game doesn’t see them as easily. Also in high demand are Mathews compound bows and also TenPoint and Ravin crossbows, with crossbows becoming more popular than ever before. Burkholder estimated that last year’s ratio was around 300 compound bows to maybe 150 crossbows, but expects this year’s sales to be much more even between the two types.
