Wild Wind Folk Art & Craft Festival

This year’s event takes place on Saturday, September 12th & Sunday, September, 13th at the Warren County Fairgrounds, 371 Barton Run Road, Pittsfield, PA. Held rain or shine, hours are 10 am to 5 pm, each day.

As the first signs of autumn begin to appear across the region, the Wild Wind Folk Art & Craft Festival welcomes visitors back for another memorable weekend of art, entertainment, and family fun. For nearly 50 years, the Wild Wind Festival has marked the arrival of fall for generations of festivalgoers. Held annually the weekend after Labor Day, the event has grown into a treasured gathering where artists, families, and longtime friends reunite among the sights and sounds of the season.

At its heart, the festival is a celebration of handcrafted artistry. More than 150 skilled artisans from across the region will be on hand, offering a wide variety of unique, high-quality creations. From potters to painters, Wild Wind’s crafters are selected to captivate every interest. Many of them return year after year, a clear indicator of the event’s high quality. Others are new to the show, adding to the festival’s artistic diversity and offering visitors a unique experience from year to year. Taking advantage of the fairground’s idyllic setting, artists display their wares in quaint, open air barns and the surrounding outdoor areas under tents. Whether searching for a small gift item or something new for the home, festivalgoers are invited to take time at each exhibit as they make their way through the grounds.

Beyond the artistry, the event offers a full weekend of family-friendly entertainment. Children and families can enjoy a traveling petting zoo, balloon art, hula hoop fun,

face painting, and interactive activities. The Tamarack Wildlife Center returns with its popular birds of prey exhibit, along with educational presentations. Weather permitting, Double C Ranch Carriage Services will offer scenic horse-drawn rides around the fairgrounds.

A special highlight this year is the return of Alexander the Magician, who is sure to enchant audiences with a blend of humor, magic, and many new surprises. For those eager to learn some magic themselves, lesson will be offered throughout the weekend. All ages are welcome to join!

Live chainsaw carving demonstrations will also be featured, with talented artists Lisa and Ross Barr of Barrnone Carvings & Creations and Brian Fox of Fox Sawmill and Custom Design transforming raw wood into impressive works of art. Visitors are encouraged to take a seat and watch these creations come to life!

Rich Selfridge of Selfridge Studios will return with live glass blowing demonstrations and a collection of his handcrafted glass artwork. Known for his beautiful functional and sculptural glass pieces, Rich brings years of experience and artistry to the festival, giving visitors the opportunity to watch the fascinating process of glass blowing while exploring his one-of-a-kind creations. Festivalgoers can also enjoy a relaxing break in the shaded picnic area while sampling a wide variety of food offerings, including longtime favorites and several new additions. From BBQ, gyros, crab cakes, and pierogies to hand-

cut fries, wood-fired pizza, and homemade pie, there is something to satisfy every appetite. Live music will add to the festive atmosphere throughout the weekend, with the Kokomo Time Band performing a blend of oldies, blues, and more on Saturday and Old Dawg Bluegrass taking the stage on Sunday with its toe-tapping rhythms.

HILL ARCHERY Ravlin

Hailing from a new address these days, Ravlin Hill Archery is raring to go as the 2026 hunting & fishing season approaches.

The shop, owned and operated by Daniel Burkholder, relocated this past summer from its original site on Ravlin Hill Road to the current facility situated at 7938 Route 474, Panama, N.Y. The move became necessary when the business outgrew its previous space.

The 30,000-square-foot facility, which took several months to build, includes not only the store itself but also a warehouse for storage, a seed room stocked with items for food plot preparation, a kitchen and lounge area for employees and three separate indoor shooting ranges that are available for public use.

Farmers and landowners will sometimes plant what are called “food plots,” which are used as a supplementary food source for wildlife and also attract different animals — usually deer or turkeys — to the area. In New York and Pennsylvania, it is legal to hunt over a food plot, so long as there are no additional minerals or grains being used to intentionally bait the deer.

Each of the shooting ranges at Ravlin Hill Archery are set up a little differently. One has simple targets set at 60 yards or closer for the purpose of sighting in an archer’s bow and ensuring accuracy. The second is full of life-size 3D animal decoys that shooters can use as target practice once their bow is sighted in. The third, a 20-yard range often referred to as a “spot room,” is used for spot leagues, or archery shooting competitions, during the winter months. It is also where instructional classes will be held.

Sighting in a bow is a process used to ensure proper mechanical performance at different distances. It involves checking that the sights, or accessories used for aiming,

are aligned correctly so they can provide the shooter with an accurate reference point. This increases the chance that the arrow will reach the intended target with a precise landing.

Individuals don’t have to own a bow to make use of the shooting ranges, as bows are available for rent as well. Instruction courses are also offered, where beginners can come and learn the basics of archery, including safety tips.

The business was started by Daniel’s father, Jonas, in May of 1994.

“We feel blessed and extremely thankful to continue where he left off,” Daniel said.

The store is now run by four full-time and four part-time employees. We are very fortunate to have staff with high energy levels and lots of enthusiasm.

The customer base, spans all the way to Tonawanda, N.Y. (near Buffalo) and even into Ohio — a radius of roughly 100 miles. At one point, individuals from 23 different states had been through the store.

One of the most popular products are hunting blinds, which are on display along the outside wall. Hunters use these portable structures to camouflage themselves in the

woods so the game doesn’t see them as easily.

Also in high demand are Mathews compound bows and also TenPoint and Ravin crossbows, with crossbows becoming more popular than ever before. Burkholder estimated that last year’s ratio was around 300 compound bows to maybe 150 crossbows, but expects this year’s sales to be much more even between the two types.

ART IN THE WILDS

Art in the Wilds returns to Kane’s Evergreen Park for its twentieth year on June 27 and 28.

“For twenty years, Art in the Wilds has brought to Kane some of the best artists and artisans from a wide swath of Pennsylvania and beyond,” said Julie Cleland, Art in the Wilds President. “This year will be even better.”

Participation in the show is limited to only forty artists. Those coveted spots are awarded by a panel of art jurors to artists who must apply to participate.

Known for the quality of its art and the beautiful setting of Evergreen Park, Art in the Wilds has received wide recognition.

Last year Art in the Wilds was named the PA Wild “Event of the Year.”

“Twenty years ago, we hoped that art might become an attraction that would bring people to Kane and have a positive economic impact not only for our local artists, but for businesses as well,” noted Marilyn Blackmore, the show’s vice president. “And that has happened.”

“We promote and advertise the show throughout western Pennsylvania and Southwestern New York with newspaper and direct mail. Each year we can expect thousands of people from throughout that region to come to Kane and walk through the show,” she said.

Promotion involves posters, tourism magazines, newspapers, social media and direct mail.

This year artists from Pennsylvania, New York and Maryland will be exhibiting and selling their work.

There is no admission fee, parking is free, and an array of food options is available on site.

Show organizers noted that because of a borough ordinance dogs are not permitted in Evergreen Park or on the art show grounds.

VISIT

Drake Well Museum

Located off Route 8 south of Titusville, Drake Well Museum and Park is administered by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC) in partnership with Friends of Drake Well, Inc., a non-profit community-based organization. The two entities also partner in the administration and operation of Historic Pithole City near Pleasantville, Pennsylvania. Drake Well Museum and Park is open year-round to visitors. Hours are currently Wednesday through Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Admission fees apply, visit www.drakewell.org for a full listing of rates! The museum features state-of-the-art exhibits tracing the development of the early petroleum industry with special focus on the famous Drake Well, struck in August 1859 by Edwin L. Drake on behalf of the Seneca Oil Company. This well sparked the beginning of the modern petroleum industry which is now a global enterprise! Visitors can also view a board-for-board replica of the well’s engine house and derrick including its working steam engine. Other interactive outdoor exhibits display equipment and machinery used in the oilfields of 19th century and 20th century Pennsylvania, including working pumping jacks run by a central power and engine. Drake Well Museum is also a prime location for outdoor recreation, being located along beautiful historic Oil Creek and next door to Oil Creek State Park. The Museum’s property features trailheads for Oil Creek State Park’s scenic bike trail and Gerard Hiking Trail.

Historic Pithole City, operated by Drake Well Museum, is located off Route 227, accessible from Route 36 and Route 8. The site is the location of Pennsylvania’s legendary oil boomtown, Pithole City, which sprang up quickly in 1865 during the oil rush days following the success of nearby Drake Well. The city, which at one time boasted over 15,000 inhabitants along with a plethora of oil wells, saloons, hotels, restaurants, theaters, and more, vanished just as quickly as it started as the oil craze moved on to other sites. Although nothing remains of the city today, an educational Visitor Center with exhibits and a detailed diorama of the city is open for visitors to explore during the summer months. Visitors can also tour the “streets”

of Pithole, marked out with interpretive signage to show where buildings and structures once stood. The Visitor Center will reopen for the season on June 6th, remaining open Saturdays and Sundays from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. until August 30th. Drake Well Museum and Park will host special events this summer and fall including Drake Day on August 9th, held the same weekend as Titusville’s Oil Festival! Drake Day celebrates the anniversary of Drake Well, but this year will have a special focus on America250, showcasing some of the great American “firsts” that came from the Pennsylvania Oil Region. Various living history reenactors and historic trade demonstrations will also show what life was like in the area during the oil boom days. The month of August will also feature the Drake Well Marathon and Half on August 15th. This special race is a major fundraiser for Friends of Drake Well, which supports Drake Well Museum and Park. The marathon portion is an official qualifier to participate in the Boston Marathon! The regular season will wrap up with the 42nd Annual Fall Gas Up Show on September 12th. This event invites exhibitors to bring their antique gas and steam engines, oilfield equipment, and more to show to visitors! Pithole will close for the year on August 30th but briefly return on October 3rd for its popular Lantern Tours! Spring is in the air and summertime is being forecasted with having a super high level of anticipation for upcoming summer events.

Organizers from community events gathered at the Warren County Visitors Bureau recently for the annual planning event to discuss and promote upcoming events. Executive Director Lisa Card said, “One of the things that makes Warren County such a special place to visit and to live are the great events that many great people

organize and dedicate so much of their time.”

Those in attendance included organizers from the following organizations: Jefferson DeFrees Family Center’s Touch a Truck, Tidioute Fun Day, Warren County Pride, Warren County Fair, Kinzua Country TANGO, Kinzua Heritage Festival, Warren County Fourth of July Celebration, Music In The Park - Warren PA, Music on the Mountain, Wild Wind Folk Art & Craft Festival, Free Books for Kids Town Children's Festival, Cornfield 500, Pennsylvania State Championship Fishing Tournament, and ROAR - Revitalization of Akeley/Russell Pine Grove Days. Several of these events are celebrating many years–many are close to 20 years and still others are approaching 100 years.

Here is a preview of some upcoming events:

— Pine Grove Days in Russell will be on May 23. Beginning with the ROAR (Revitalizing of Akeley and Russell) 5K will begin at 8 a.m. for registration, race begins at 9 a.m. The parade begins at 11 a.m. from Woodlawn Dr to Main St. Ending with dancing in the park and fireworks at Larimer Park, this family friendly event should not be missed.

— Jefferson DeFrees Family Center will hold their annual “Touch-a-Truck” on June 6 at Betts Park, 100 Ludlow St., Warren. A day of fun for kids of ALL ages, trucks and vehicles of all shapes and sizes will be present. There is a VIP hour (9am-10am) for those that are sensory sensitive. Tickets are $10 each and are for sale beginning in May. Admission after 10:00am is by donation. Children under 2 are free. Food vendors, children's activities, photo opportunities, basket raffle, Paint a Car/Smash a Car, ping pong ball drop are some of the available activities on site.

— The nation’s 250th anniversary brings one of the most anticipated events of the year with the Warren County Fourth of July Celebration, in its 78th year. Beginning

on June 23, the festivities abound. Even though organizers Bill and Kelly Thompson are not Warren natives, this tradition is something that means a lot to them.

The Thompsons are encouraging Warren residents and businesses to decorate two weeks prior to the Fourth by making the county red, white and blue beginning on June 23. This is a contest with prizes awarded. To be judged, contact Kelly Thompson at 814-688-0094.

“We’re all about the red, white and blue. We’re asking everyone to decorate their porches, their yards, whatever, red white and blue, for this season,” Kelly Thompson said. New to this year’s July Fourth Celebration include a tethered hot air balloon ride and the "Ultimate Duel Championship Wrestling," its very first show; both on Friday, July 3.

The Fourth of July Parade will be Saturday at 11 a.m. Entries are being accepted, many of the 37 that have already signed up are first timers. This year’s fireworks are on Saturday, July 4th at 10 p.m. If you would like to donate towards this year’s celebration, donations can be sent to:

— Cornfield 500 (named “Cornfield 250” this year) returns to the Warren County list of events for the Fourth of July weekend. Located at 43311 Route 6, Columbus, PA, this family friendly event is excited to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary. Featuring Mega Truck Shows, Challenger Car Racing and Enduros, MX Freestyle, and Side by Side Racing. The launching of the Baker Hill Tri-County ATV Club will be presented along with bands, fireworks, camping and more. A few things you won’t want to miss this year involve Thrilling Stunts by Doug Lawson Jr. and his team, representing his local MX Track, Mapleshade MX, from Youngsville, PA. There will be surprise guests all weekend as well as the wedding anniversary celebration of the hosts of the show, Blair and Sabrena Miller, who 18 years ago, were CMT’s

— The Kinzua Heritage Festival, in its 21st consecutive year, will take place this year on August 21-23, held at 4047 Fox Hill Road in Russell. This family oriented non-profit organization has a mission to keep the past alive through the crafts, arts and music of days gone by. lEach year there are many crafters and artisans that come to share their skill and knowledge of what they’ve learned from their ancestors. An auction is done on both Saturday and Sunday with 100% of the proceeds donated to local charities which in the past have included food banks, Veterans groups and schools. — The Wild Wind Festival, the largest arts and crafts festival in northwest PA, will be held on September 12-13. Dating over 40 years since its start, the festival represents over 150 juried artists and brings in anywhere from 7,500 to 10,000 people each year. This takes place at the Warren County Fairgrounds, 371 Barton Run Road, Route 6, Pittsfield, PA.

The Warren County Fair is gearing up for another packed summer, with organizers promising a full week of entertainment, family activities, food and community traditions for fairgoers in 2026.

Planning for the annual fair begins almost immediately after the previous year’s event ends, according to fair director Michael Bliss. The fair’s board of directors and numerous committees work year-round and meet

monthly, coordinating entertainment, attractions, vendors, livestock events and infrastructure improvements.

“It starts about a week after the fair,” Bliss said. “There’s a tremendous amount of work that goes into it between August and January.”

Bliss said many longtime vendors and nonprofit organizations return each year, helping create the nostalgic atmosphere many visitors associate with the fair.

Food remains a major attraction, with returning favorites such as steak sandwiches, Italian sausage, hard ice cream and two-foot subs. Organizers also plan to introduce several new food vendors this year.

The midway will once again be operated by Penn Valley Shows, which brought the ride “The Beast” to the fairgrounds last year. Family-friendly attractions planned for 2026 include the Wild World of Animals show and Puppy Pals Live.

The fair officially begins Sunday, August 9 with a Vesper service before continuing Monday with the fair queen contest and the “Chute-out” Rodeo. Monday also serves as a free gate day, allowing visitors to preview the fairgrounds and attractions.

Entertainment throughout the week includes country artist Billy Dean performing Tuesday night and The Beatles tribute act 1964 The Tribute taking the stage on Wednesday. Saturday night will feature Crush: the Bon Jovi Concert Experience, followed by Stock Car Football and the fair’s traditional fireworks display.

Other events scheduled throughout the week include antique tractor and horse pulls, woodsman competitions and livestock exhibitions.

Organizers are also planning a special America 250 celebration Wednesday afternoon following the veterans ceremony at Betsy Ross Park Gazebo. While details are still being finalized, the event is expected to include community participation and a basket raffle.

Beyond entertainment, the event has a significant economic impact on the area. Hotels, restaurants and local businesses often see increased traffic during fair week, while community organizations benefit from fundraising opportunities tied to gate operations, food stands and other fair activities.

“A lot of people that work at the gates are community groups that benefit from that monetarily,” Bliss said. “We’re able to support a lot of fundraising activities for local groups.”

Organizers are also continuing to invest in improvements at the fairgrounds. Current projects include replacing horse rings, installing a large wash rack near the livestock complex and upgrading bleachers and announcer facilities. Additional plans include painting major exhibitor buildings and improving underground utilities.

Despite the scale of the operation, fair officials emphasized the event relies heavily on volunteers and community participation.

“We’re all volunteers,” Bliss said. “It takes a lot of people to put the fair on, and I think that family atmosphere is what makes it special.”

The fair board hopes visitors leave with lasting memories and an affordable experience for the entire family.

“No matter how much time you spend there, we want people to walk away saying they had a great time,” Bliss said.

Celebrating the country’s 250th anniversary is a big deal and the Warren County Fourth of July Festivities are starting even earlier this year by having the county turn RED, WHITE and BLUE by decorating their properties, homes, yards and porches beginning June 23 to July 4. Leading up to the giant Fourth of July weekend celebration, there will be plenty of fun beginning Thursday, June 25 with the annual Pops at the Fountain outdoor concert, a tradition which takes place on the closed off streets of Liberty and Third at the town center fountain. This is the culmination event to the three-week Warren County Summer Music School program where students play alongside the Warren Philharmonic orchestra for its ninth year.

The relaunch of Warren’s Downtown Ribfest starting at 11 a.m. until 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday, June 26 and 27 from 11 a.m.-11 p.m. Barbecue from award-winning rib masters, alongside a variety of local food concessions will be available. There will be live entertainment,

NATIONAL FOREST Allegheny

Established in 1923, the Allegheny National Forest is Pennsylvania's only national forest.

Situated in the foothills of the Appalachian mountains, the forest is composed of plateau tops with elevations up to 2,300 feet and valleys down to 1,000 feet above sea level. The forest is 517,000 acres and includes land in Elk, Forest, McKean and Warren counties.

HIKING

With more than 200 miles of hiking trails, 53 miles of cross-country ski trails and 18 miles of interpretive trails the Allegheny National Forest offers a variety of hiking experiences. Maps for each trail are available on that trails web page by visiting www.fs.usda.gov/activity/allegheny/recreation/hiking/?recid=6083&actid=51.

Trails include:

• Brush Hollow Cross Country Ski and Hiking trail, a 7.7 mile-trail suitable for cross-country skiing, mountain biking and snowshoeing;

• Hearts Content Trails, a 7.8 mile-trail suitable for hiking, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing;

• Hickory Creek Wilderness Trails, a 12-mile trail;

• Minister Creek Trail, a 6.6-mile trail;

• Morrison Creek Hiking Trail, an 11.4-mile trail;

• the North Country National Scenic Trail, a 96.3-mile trail also suitable for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing;

• Tracy Ridge, a 33.69-mile trail also suitable for cross-country skiing; and

• Twin Lakes Hiking Trail, a 15.8 mile trail also suitable for cross-country skiing and mountain biking.

ALLEGHENY RESERVOIR

A major outdoor recreational attraction on the Forest is the 7,647 acre Allegheny Reservoir. At normal summer pool level the reservoir is 27 miles long (14 miles in Pennsylvania and 13 miles in New York) with 91 miles of shoreline.

The undeveloped Allegheny Reservoir shoreline and National Forest System land surrounding the Reservoir provide the largest outdoor recreation opportunities in northwestern Pennsylvania. Highly developed infrastructure (e.g. paved roads, pressurized water systems, sewage treatment plants and electrical service) are in place to serve campgrounds with utilities, flush toilets and hot water showers. Other facilities include picnic areas, swimming beaches, and shoreline fishing opportunities and fishing piers.

The reservoir was created in the 1960s when the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers constructed the Kinzua Dam on the upper Allegheny River. The reservoir water level and water surface is managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The adjacent shoreline is primarily owned and managed in Pennsylvania by the U.S. Forest Service and in New York by the Seneca Nation of Indians, New York State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation, and Cattaraugus County, N.Y.

Only a few private landowners exist on the New York shoreline. The Allegheny Reservoir is unique because very little private commercial development exists along its shoreline. The majority of the existing developed recreation sites on the PA portion of the Reservoir are operated and maintained by the Allegheny National Forest.

BRADFORD RANGER DISTRICT

The Bradford Ranger District covers the northern half of the Allegheny National Forest. Highlights of this area include the Allegheny Reservoir, Wild and Scenic Allegheny River and Hearts Content.

Hidden gems found on the district are the Old Powerhouse, Timberdoodle Flats Interpretive Trail and Hall Barn Wildlife Viewing Area.

MARIENVILLE RANGER DISTRICT

The Marienville Ranger District covers the southern half of the Allegheny National Forest. Highlights of this area include the Penoke, Marienville and Timberline OHV trails, Wild and Scenic Clarion River and Buzzard Swamp.

Hidden gems on this district include the Little Drummer Trail, Laurel Mill Trail and Beaver Meadows.

NORTH COUNTRY NATIONAL SCENIC TRAIL

Walk among rocks and waterfalls, Allegheny hardwoods and stands of mountain laurel! Explore the 96.3 miles of North Country National Scenic Trail (NCNST) that meander through the historic lands of the Iroquois, the Allegheny Plateau, some of the most valuable black cherry and oak in the world, landscapes rich in history, wildlife, and natural beauty.

A unique national resource, the NCNST is part of a 3,200-mile National Scenic Trail to extend from Crown Point, NY to Lake Sakakawea, ND. Once completed, it will be the longest continuous foot path in the US.

Midway STATE PARK

One of the longest running amusement parks in the nation, Midway State Park is an annual favorite for local people and families, especially those with younger children.

The park is small enough for a day trip, and yet provides something for everyone from kiddie rides for young kids, to go-karts and other rides for those older, to an arcade for any age.

Parks Management said that Midway State Park has become a yearly tradition for many.

“Families return to visit Midway State Park year after year and generation after generation,” they said. “It is truly a place where memories are made.”

Midway State Park is primarily an outdoor experience, making it a mostly summer attraction. The park provides outdoor activities such as rides, other attractions, the playground, and lakeside picnic area. Midway State Park officially opens on May 23 this year, and is open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The park is located at 4859 NY-430, Bemus Point. STATE PARK Chapman

The 862-acre Chapman State Park includes the 68-acre Chapman Lake on the West Branch of Tionesta Creek.

Adjacent to state game lands and the Allegheny National Forest, Chapman is an oasis of recreational facilities in a vast area of wilderness.

The park is open every day of the year, sunrise to sunset. Day use areas close at dusk.

• Adams Run Trail — .4 mile, easiest hiking, yellow blazes. The trail head is near the restroom at the base of the sledding hill and follows Adams Run up a gradual grade until the trail ends at Hunters Ridge Trail. There is a 0.25 mile parallel trail on the opposite side of Adams Run to make a shorter loop out of the first half of the trail. There are many wet areas, especially in the spring, which may persist throughout the summer. This trail is for hiking and experienced cross-country skiing.

• Crooked Pine Trail — one-half mile, most difficult hiking, yellow blazes. A short connector trail between Hunters Ridge Trail and the Group Tenting Area parking lot, this trail is steep and meanders through several different forest types. This trail is for hiking only.

• Game Lands Road — six miles, more difficult hiking, no blazes. An easy trail which is quite flat over its entire length, the road runs from the parking lot near the group tenting area, 0.5 miles within the park, continuing through State Game Lands 29, and eventually to Dunham Siding or Hermit Springs. It also may be accessed from the campground by using the Old Railroad Grade/ Lowlands Trail. The road is gated at both ends and has many turn offs, which may or may not be gated. Foot, horse, and bicycle travel is allowed only on designated trails and roads, marked by a green triangle sign. Trails and roads marked with a red triangle sign allow foot travel only. (Foot traffic includes cross-country skiing.) Trails are closed for bicycles and horses from the last

unless the visitor is hunting or fishing. The trails are open Sundays during this time.

• Hunters Ridge Trail — 2.75 miles, most difficult hiking, yellow blazes. Much of this trail is rugged and hilly. Be conscientious of your ability and health. One end of the trail is on Forest Road 437 near the park office and the other end is near the parking lot at the end of the Game Land Road. A loop can be made by following Game Land Road and Warming Hut Trail. There are many wet areas, especially in the spring, which may persist throughout the summer. At times, the trail follows the boundary between the park and the state game lands. (This boundary is blazed in white. Do not mistake it for the trail.) The trail also crosses many oil lease roads. Be careful to find the blazes on the other side of the road. Do not follow these roads! They are many miles long and have numerous, confusing turn-offs. This trail is for hiking only.

• Lowlands Trail — .3 miles, easiest hiking, blue blazes. One end of the trail is on the Game Land Road and the other is between sites #23 and #25 of the campground. It is an easy trail along an old railroad grade, across the Swinging Bridge over the West Branch of Tionesta Creek, and through a wetland area above the lake. The Old Railroad Grade may be followed past the Swinging Bridge through State Game Lands 29 where it connects with the Game Land Road. This trail is for hiking, bicycling, and cross-country skiing. Bicyclers and skiers should be very careful crossing the Swinging Bridge and its steps.

• Lumber Trail — seven-tenths of a mile, easiest hiking, orange and yellow blazes. This trail is suitable for hikers of all ages. The first portion of the trail is shared with the Allegheny National Forest Snowmobile Trail, blazed with orange diamonds, and is easy with little grade. The trailhead is along the Main Park Road between the beach and the campground. The trail uses an abandoned logging road as its base, and evidence of the lumbering activity can still be seen along the length of the trail. This trail is for hiking. Bicycling and snowmobiling is permitted only on the portion shared with the snowmobile trail.

• Nature Trail — 1.2 miles, easiest hiking, yellow blazes. Suitable for hikers of all ages, the trail is mostly level along the lakeshore, but has some short, steep hills around the Upper Loop of the campground. One end of the trail is along the service road near the amphitheater and the other is located partway up Lumber Trail. A short loop can be made where the trail splits behind the Upper Loop of the campground. This short section starts along the road near the campground host site and RV dump station. This trail is for hiking only. The section of the Nature Trail from the amphitheater to Old Railroad Grade/Lowlands trail is a self-guiding trail with interpretive signs at ten designated points of interest. The order of the signs is intended to start at the amphitheater, but can be followed in either direction.

• Orchard Trail — .13 mile, easiest hiking, yellow blazes. A short connector trail between the Warming Hut Trail and Hunters Ridge Trail, this trail is moderately steep and travels through an old apple orchard. This trail is for hiking only.

• Penny Run Trail — 1.4 miles, more difficult hiking, blue blazes. Hiking difficulty is moderate with steady uphill grades. One end of the trail is across the Main Park Road from the Spillway Parking Lot and the other is across the Main Park Road from the Pavilion #2 Parking Lot. The trail travels through diverse hardwood and hemlock forest in the park and in the neighboring Allegheny National Forest. This trail is usually wet, with some spots persisting throughout the year. This trail is for hiking and experienced cross-country skiing.

• Warming Hut Trail — seven-tenths of a mile, easiest hiking, orange diamond blazes. This moderately easy trail follows the lakeshore and climbs a gradual hill above the dam. One end of the trail is across Forest Road 437 from the office and the other is at the warming hut. This trail is for hiking, snowmobiling, bicycling, and cross-country skiing.

BACKPACKING

In addition to the trails at the park, Chapman State Park serves as a trailhead for backpacking trails on adjoining public lands. Map and trail information is available in

the park office. Free parking is available at the park for those who would rather not leave their vehicles along public roadways. Those backpacking must sign in at the park office.

BIKING

Although most hiking trails are not open to bicycles, all roads in the park, in the adjacent state game lands, and in Allegheny National Forest are open to bicycles.

PICNICKING

The main picnic area is by the beach and overlooks the lake.

Five picnic pavilions may be reserved up to 11 months in advance for a fee. Unreserved picnic pavilions are free on a first-come, first-served basis.

Pavilions #1 - 4 are ADA accessible.

SWIMMING

A sand beach is open from late-May to mid-September, from 8 a.m. until sunset.

Swim at one's own risk. Please read and follow posted rules.

Smoking is prohibited on the beach and in the swimming area. For visitors who smoke and still want to use the beach, designated areas adjacent to the beach are provided. The restriction includes: cigarettes, pipes, cigars, e-cigarettes, other handheld, lighted smoking devices.

A concession stand is located at the beach area. The concession offers beverages, snacks, ice cream treats, and ice.

BOATING

The 68-acre Chapman Lake has a boat launch and 41 seasonal mooring spaces on the western side, and mooring for registered campers on the eastern shoreline.

Motorboats must display a boat registration from any state. Non-powered boats must display one of the following:

• Boat registration from any state

• Launch permit or mooring permit from Pennsylvania state parks that are available at most state park offices

• Launch use permit from the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission

Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission regulations and laws apply.

FISHING AT CHAPMAN STATE PARK

The 68-acre Chapman Lake has fishing for coldwater and warmwater fish, including brook and brown trout, largemouth bass, bluegill, sunfish, yellow perch and sucker.

Within the park and the surrounding Allegheny National Forest, trout fishing exists in the West Branch of Tionesta Creek and Farnsworth Run.

Art TRAIL

The Chautauqua-Lake Erie Art Trail offers members of the North Shore Arts Alliance (NSAA) a unique opportunity to open their studios to the public or exhibit their work in galleries and non-traditional “hub” locations during two weekends each year — Memorial Day and Labor Day. This self-guided driving tour spans Chautauqua County, inviting visitors to experience art where it is created and displayed.

Recognizing that not all artist studios are easily accessible, NSAA has developed a network of hub locations where visitors can meet multiple artists in one stop. These hubs may be set outdoors under canopies or indoors in shared spaces generously provided by fellow artists. The organization has also cultivated creative partnerships with community venues, including the Bemus Point Library, where artists exhibit on the grounds in exchange for promotional support.

The Art Trail has become a meaningful economic driver for the region, attracting visitors from across New York state and neighboring Pennsylvania. In 2025, nearly 14 percent of attendees traveled from outside the state. Trail stops stretch from Jamestown to Sherman and from Kennedy to Fredonia, offering a wide geographic reach. While the region is often associated with Chautauqua Institution, many visitors are drawn specifically to the Art Trail for its accessibility and the opportunity to engage directly with artists.

To encourage exploration of more locations — particularly working studios — NSAA introduced a popular passport program. Visitors collect stamps at each stop and redeem completed passports for tiered prizes, including gift certificates redeemable with participating artists. The program has proven highly effective, growing by 24 percent from 2024 to 2025.

NSAA continues to enhance the visitor experience with tools such as an interactive online map, also available in print, featuring locations, artist profiles, images, and links to artist websites. These resources not only improve navigation during the event but also extend artist visibility and sales opportunities beyond Trail weekends. In 2025, the Trail included 14 hubs and 28 artists; in 2026, it is set to expand to 16 stops with 36 participating artists.

The organization currently includes 104 members and is led by an all-volunteer Board of Directors. Board members bring expertise in the arts, education, design, curation, accounting, and communications, ensuring both creative vitality and strong organizational oversight. Participating artists actively promote the Trail through social media, community outreach, and local partnerships, sup-

ported by regional advertising and on-site signage.

NSAA’s goals remain focused on increasing attendance across both weekends, boosting artist sales, and strengthening regional tourism by encouraging overnight stays. Visitor data, tracked through zip code sign-ins, shows a 20% overall increase in attendance in 2025, along with a 21 percent rise in out-of-state visitors.

Looking ahead, NSAA is launching an Emerging Student Artist program for high school students. This initiative will offer free participation at designated Art Trail locations, helping to foster the next generation of artists while deepening community engagement with the arts.

Headline COMEDY FESTIVAL

The National Comedy Center’s Lucille Ball Comedy Festival will feature headlining comedians Jerry Seinfeld, Bert Kreischer and Seth Meyers from Aug. 6 to 9.

For the first time, this year’s festival features three major headlining comedians performing in the Northwest Arena. Additional talent will be featured in stand-up showcases and late-night comedy shows throughout the festival.

Jerry Seinfeld will headline on Thursday, Aug. 6; Bert Kreischer will take the stage as part of his “Permission to Party” tour on Saturday, Aug. 8; and Seth Meyers will perform on Sunday, Aug. 9. A mainstage Stand-Up Showcase on Friday, Aug. 7, and showcases throughout the festival will feature a lineup of talent from across the country.

“The National Comedy Center’s museum and archive were established to celebrate the art form’s distinct voices and contributions throughout time, and this year’s festival brings together artists who represent distinct approaches to the craft. I love that audiences can experience the best of live comedy while connecting it to the larger story we preserve and share every day in Jamestown,” said Journey Gunderson, executive director.

Seinfeld’s performance is at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 6, in the Northwest Arena. Kreischer will perform shows at 7 and 9:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 8, in the Northwest Arena and Meyers will perform at 5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 9, in the Northwest Arena. The Stand-Up Showcase will take place at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 7, at the Reg Lenna Center for the Arts.

The 2026 festival marks the 35th anniversary of the event and the 30th anniversary of the Lucille Ball Desi Arnaz Museum, a milestone year for comedy in Jamestown.
