The Chautauqua Center Owned Pharmacies Step Up to Serve Chautauqua and Cattaraugus Counties Amidst Widespread Sector Closures

As Chautauqua and Cattaraugus counties face the impact of numerous pharmacy closures, including multiple Rite Aid locations in recent weeks, The Chautauqua Center owned Waterfront Pharmacy and South Dayton Pharmacy are reinforcing their commitment to ensuring accessible and personalized pharmaceutical care for the community.

The recent wave of closures, which saw six Rite Aid stores close in Chautauqua County alone, has caused smaller pharmacies to reach patient capacity. Many residents have been left searching for a reliable and convenient option for their prescription needs.

In this challenging landscape, the Waterfront Pharmacy and South Dayton Pharmacy stand as stable, community-focused nonprofit alternatives. The locations accept prescriptions from any provider - including those not affiliated with TCC. All the pharmacies participate in the Federal 340B Drug Pricing Program.

Pharmacy Director Megan Reynolds, PharmD, stated, "The closures of major pharmacy chains are undoubtedly creating significant challenges for individuals and families in our region. At all our pharmacies, we want the community to know that we are here to bridge that gap. As a nonprofit, our focus is entirely on the well-being of our patients and our community. We are dedicated to providing the high-quality, compassionate care that each and every patient deserves."

TCC pharmacy locations are the Waterfront Pharmacy at 107 Institute St, Jamestown and 75 E. Third Street, Dunkirk, as well as the South Dayton Pharmacy in the Valero Market at 303 Pine Street, South Dayton. All locations offer a comprehensive range of services designed to meet diverse healthcare needs, including:

• Free Delivery to All Service Areas: The Chautauqua Center has affiliate practices in Forestville and Gowanda, so we deliver free to all patients in Chautauqua County, and the Forestville, Gowanda, and South Dayton areas.

• PakMyMeds Service: A free, innovative service that pre-sorts and packages daily medications by date and time, significantly

reducing the risk of errors and improving adherence, especially for those on multiple prescriptions. This service includes free delivery.

• Personalized Care: A commitment to building strong relationships with patients and providing tailored solutions.

• Medication Therapy Management: Helping patients understand and manage their medications effectively.

• Immunizations: Offering various essential vaccinations (availability at locations varies).

• Medication Synchronization: Coordinating refills for convenient, same-day pickups.

• 340B Program: Offering program prices on medications to eligible patients.

• Walk-In Services: Providing accessibility for all patients.

• Accepts Medicaid: Ensuring care is available to a wide range of individuals.

"Our team understands the stress and inconvenience these closures can cause," Reynolds added. "We encourage anyone affected to reach out to us. Transferring prescriptions is easier than ever, and our dedicated staff is ready to assist with a seamless transition, ensuring no disruption to vital medication access."

The Right Time for Hospice: Sooner is Often Better

any people think hospice care is only for the very last days of life. Starting hospice earlier can make a big difference for both patients and families. It means more comfort, less stress, and more time to spend together. Studies have shown that patients who begin hospice sooner often have better pain control and fewer trips to the hospital. In some cases, they even live longer than those who continue with standard treatment alone. Families also report feeling more supported and less overwhelmed when hospice is involved earlier. Hospice care provides more than medical help. It brings emotional and spiritual support, guidance for caregivers, and peace of mind when families need it most.

At Chautauqua Hospice & Palliative Care, we know how important this time is. When hospice begins earlier, our nurses, aides, social workers, chaplains, and volunteers have the chance to truly get to know each family. This allows us to create care that is personal, thoughtful, and focused on what matters most to the patient. It may be controlling pain, finding emotional or spiritual peace, or simply spending more time at home surrounded by loved ones.

Families who call earlier often find they have more opportunities to talk openly about their wishes, repair old relationships, or simply enjoy the small everyday moments. Hospice creates space for those conversations and moments to happen without

the constant interruptions of medical crises.

Too often, families tell us they wish they had called sooner. Hospice is not about giving up. It is about gaining comfort, dignity, and support. Starting earlier gives families more time to focus on the moments that matter most.

If you or someone you love is living with a serious illness, consider having the hospice conversation today. At Chautauqua Hospice & Palliative Care, we are here to help, to listen, and to provide care when it matters most. If you or a loved one has a terminal illness, do not hesitate to call 716-338-0033.

Pain Management Specialist Joins Lake Erie Medical Services

Ever since he was a kid, Lenny Rostomian enjoyed being someone who would “readily lend a helping hand when needed,” but it wasn’t until he got older that he fell in love with the sciences. That, Dr. Rostomian says, is why he pursued a career in medicine.

But WHY pain management?

The answer stems from his life-long passion for martial arts. In the practice of martial arts, Dr. Rostomian had to not only deal with his own physical injuries and pain, but watch other athletes do the same.

“Every one of us battles with pain at some point or another,” he said, “And I wanted to become someone who could provide people with the tools to overcome their injuries and help them chart a path toward a more fulfilling and functional life.”

Dr. Rostomian specializes in minimally invasive, Xray-guided interventional procedures, medication management, and personalized exercise plans for the treatment of acute and chronic neck pain, back pain, sciatic nerve pain, joint pain, nerve related pain, widespread pain, and headaches.

“I wanted to become someone who could provide people with the tools to overcome their injuries and help them chart a path toward a more fulfilling and functional life.”

With a master of science degree in interdisciplinary studies in biology and physical sciences, he earned his Doctorate of Osteopathic Medicine from Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine in New Jersey.

Dr. Rostomian comes to Lake Erie Medical Services from Albany Medical Center where he served as a Pain Management Fellow. His hospital experience includes work in Internal Medicine at NYP Brooklyn Methodist Hospital in Brooklyn, NY. He was also chief resident in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Temple University Hospital/Moss Rehab in Philadelphia.

In his down time, he and his girlfriend are raising two feline “kids” — Mango and Tuna — who are an American short hair and a Siamese mix, respectively.

He also enjoys reading fantasy novels, particularly the Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan, and the Avengers franchise movies. And as if not busy enough, he loves cooking and baking (but feels he is a much better baker!). He is guilty of always looking for people to test his recipes.

Dr. Rostomian is accepting patients for appointments locally at 419 Central Ave. in Dunkirk, and at 7060 Erie Rd. Suite 500, Derby. He has privileges at Brooks Hospital, 529 Central Ave, Dunkirk.

What to Know About Celiac Disease

Approximately one in 100 people worldwide have celiac disease, according to the Celiac Disease Foundation. But medical professionals believe many cases of celiac disease go undiagnosed, so the actual prevalence may be higher. Learning about celiac disease can help keep more people safe and healthy and increase the chances that everyone with the condition is successfully diagnosed.

What is celiac disease?

Celiac disease is an autoimmune condition that is triggered by the consumption of gluten. Beyond Celiac says when a person with celiac disease eats gluten, the immune system sees the gluten as a threat and mounts an attack. The attack damages the villi of the small intestines, which are responsible for helping to digest food. Without healthy villi, it is nearly impossible for the body to absorb nutrients. The good news is damaged villi can grow back over time.

What happens if celiac disease is not treated?

If left untreated, celiac disease can lead to malnourishment and many other issues, notably anemia, osteoporosis, increased risk of certain cancers, and even neurological problems. Celiac disease is a serious illness that should not be overlooked, and early diagnosis can help prevent cumulative damage.

How is celiac disease treated?

There are no medications specifically for celiac disease. Disease management comes down to avoiding all foods and beverages containing gluten. This means a lifelong adherence to a strict

gluten-free diet, says the Celiac Disease Foundation®. Gluten can be found in wheat, rye and barley.

Are there unexpected sources of gluten?

People with celiac disease have to be diligent about reading labels. Gluten can be found in foods and beverages that traditionally are gluten-free. For example, processed meats may use gluten as a binder or filler. Sauces like barbecue sauce, mustards and gravies often contain gluten. Some medications may use gluten as a binding ingredient. French fries may be battered or seasoned with gluten-containing ingredients. Although oats are naturally gluten-free, they are often processed on the same equipment as wheat, leading to cross-contamination.

How much gluten is dangerous for those with celiac disease?

Though people’s reactions to gluten may vary, even small amounts of it can cause irreversible damage. Someone with celiac disease can be affected by crumbs of gluten-containing bread left on a cutting board. Cross-contamination is a very real concern. Individuals may need to use separate cooking utensils to keep items completely gluten-free. It is recommended to use a separate toaster for gluten-free items. Beyond Celiac says gluten cannot be sanitized away, so any remaining gluten on sponges or dishrags (or other dinnerware) can be transferred to otherwise clean dishes. Gluten even can be transferred from the handle of the refrigerator. It’s recommended to store gluten-free items on higher shelves to help avoid crumbs from foods from falling on them.

Can a person eat out with celiac disease?

Although many restaurants have made great strides in offering gluten-free items, cross-contamination remains a big concern for those with celiac disease. Unless the diner can confirm that food was cooked in a separate pan, on a separate grill, or away from all other foods, most individuals with celiac disease may need to avoid dining out or arrange to bring their own “safe” food.

Celiac disease is gaining wider recognition, but there are still some things the public must learn about this common condition.

How to Conduct a Skin Care Self-Exam

Courtesy of Metro Creative

Time spent soaking up the summer sun is one of the things that makes the season so appealing. Warm outdoor air has a calming effect that can make anyone feel more relaxed and comfortable.

As good as warm summer sun can feel, overexposure to the sun can be dangerous. The World Cancer Research Fund reports there were more than 330,000 new cases of skin cancer diagnosed across the globe in 2022. A significant percentage of skin cancer cases can be prevented, and prevention is a multifaceted process that includes skin care self-examinations. Self-exams do not take up much time, and individuals can speak with their physicians about how frequently they should check their skin for signs of skin cancer. The U.S. National Library of Medicine offers the following instructions for how to conduct a skin self-exam.

• Choose the right time to examine your skin. The USNLM recommends conducting a skin exam after bathing. Women who routinely conduct breast self-exams can check their skin at this time as well.

• Use a full-length mirror. It’s not always easy to examine skin throughout the body. But signs of skin problems can occur anywhere on the body, including areas that might be hard to see without help. If possible, conduct a self-exam of the skin in front of full-length mirror in a brightly lit room.

• Identify what you’re looking for. The USNLM notes you should be looking for any new skin markings. This includes bumps, moles, blemishes, and changes in skin color.

• Pay close attention to preexisting moles. A potential sign of skin cancer includes moles that change over time. Examine preexisting moles to see if they have changed in size, texture, color, and shape.

• Look for unusual moles. The USNLM characterizes certain moles as “ugly duckling moles.” These unique moles look and feel different from nearby moles and may be indicative of skin cancer. Speak with a dermatologist if a self-exam uncovers the presence of moles with uneven edges or differences in colors or asymmetric shapes. Moles that look different from one side to the other also should be brought to the attention of a dermatologist. Moles that do not stop bleeding or will not heal also merit examination by a skin care professional. When the time comes to conduct the exam, the USNLM recommends following these steps:

- Look closely at your entire body, both front and back, in the mirror.

- Check under your arms and on both sides of each arm. Be sure to examine the backs of your upper arms, which can be hard to see.

- Bend your arms at the elbow, and examine both sides of your forearm.

- Examine the tops and palms of your hands.

- Examine the front and back of both legs.

- Examine your buttocks and between your buttocks.

- Examine your genital area.

- Examine your face, neck, the back of your neck, and scalp. Use both a hand mirror and full-length mirror, along with a comb, to see areas of your scalp.

- Examine your feet, including the soles and the spaces between your toes.

- Ask a person you trust to help examine hard-to-see areas. Skin cancer poses a formidable threat, but many cases of the disease are preventable. Routine skin self-exams are a vital component of skin cancer prevention.

Dynami Chiropractic of Western NY

Precision • Mobility • Performance

We are Chautauqua County’s Premier Chiropractic & Sports Medicine Clinic. Highly specialized chiropractic clinic focused on fully addressing and treating your diagnosis.

These are not your typical 10 minute “crack your neck and back” appointments; but 30-minute treatment sessions that incorporate precise neuromuscular and myofascial release techniques, joint/muscle manipulation, and rehabilitation exercises. We understand that getting your back or neck “cracked” feels good, and it may even provide a fair amount of relief. However it will never ‘solve’ the issue, and it will not address the cause.

Dr. Dimitri Landis is the owner and head clinician of Precision Mobility & Performance. Though his education is primarily Chiropractic Medicine, he has over the last few years developed a reputation as a very “non-traditional” Chiropractor, preferring to treat patients using various types of manual therapy, joint manipulation, and spinal decompression.

Our Specializations

This particular aspect of treatment is arguably the most important and represents the primary difference between the techniques utilized at this office and those utilized by most or “traditional” chiropractors. There is simply no scenario that consists of you getting your back, hip, or neck “cracked” a few times and then being “fixed”. We use specialized manual therapy such as Myofascial Active Release and Muscle Energy Techniques which will improve faulty biomechanics and allow your body to move as efficiently as possible, which in turn will reduce pain and inflammation.

Muscle Scraping /

IASTM

Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (or IASTM) is a technique that is used by many health care professionals in the realm of Sports Medicine, particularly when it comes to treating muscular stiffness and reduced range-of-motion. IASTM refers to a technique whereby a medical professional uses a specific instrument to “scrape” muscle tissue/fascia, which acts to reduce muscular adhesions and scar tissue.

Chiropractic Manipulation

Our goal is to correct faulty movement patterns and enhance overall mobility by addressing tight and weak muscles. We focus on accurately diagnosing and treating musculoskeletal issues through advanced manual therapy and myofascial release techniques. Unlike simply adjusting the body, our approach aims to fix the underlying problem rather than providing temporary relief.

Experiencing discomfort can significantly impact your daily life, disrupting your activities and overall well-being. While various methods exist to manage musculoskeletal pain, our approach emphasizes a holistic combination of specific manual therapy, tailored exercises, and lifestyle adjustments. Unlike relying solely on painkillers or muscle relaxers, which only alleviate symptoms temporarily, our integrated approach targets the root cause of your discomfort for long-lasting relief. At our office, we specialize in direct and specific neuromuscular tissue work alongside manipulation to effectively address pain, stiffness, intervertebral disc injuries, headaches, nerve pain, and other neuromusculoskeletal issues. Complementing these treatments are carefully selected rehabilitative exercises aimed at reinforcing symptom reduction and preventing reoccurrence. Upon your initial visit, new patients undergo a thorough medical screening, neuromusculoskeletal exam, and biomechanical evaluation to precisely identify the underlying issue, understand its cause, and develop a personalized treatment plan. Don't endure unnecessary pain any longer – take control of your well-being by contacting us today to schedule your appointment.

Neuromuscular Assessment and Examination

The only way to fully treat a particular complaint or issue is to determine the root cause of the symptoms you are having and formulate a diagnosis accordingly. After taking a detailed history, we thoroughly examine each patient using a combination of Muscle Testing, Orthopedic Exams, and Range-of-Motion (ROM) Assessments. Discovering patterns of muscular weakness, reduced ROM, and positive/negative orthopedic exams allows us to piece together your diagnosis and formulate the most effective plan to bring you not only long term relief, but peace of mind.

Specialized Manual Therapy

Chiropractic Adjustments or Manipulation is essentially the gold standard of traditional chiropractic care. This procedure involves the doctor using his or her hands to implement a controlled force into a joint or group of joints, with the intent of improving the amount of movement within the joint or joints in question. Properly implemented adjustments act to temporarily improve movement/mobility, reduce pain, reduce inflammation, and improve neurological function overall.

Spinal Decompression

Spinal Decompression happens to be another staple of Chiropractic care in general and can be highly effective with regards to treating more serious or established cases of neck and back pain. Precision Mobility and Performance specifically utilizes ‘Cox Flexion/Distraction and Decompression’, which uses a state-of-the-art decompression table specific to the Cox Technique. This intervention combines traction with flexion and/ or lateral flexion, entirely dependent on what your specific situation calls for. This is one of the most effective methods of treating neck and back pain by a margin, and does so without any “cracking”.

Myofascial Decompression (Cupping)

Cupping Therapy is a therapeutic technique that dates back thousands of years and has evolved over time to be used for a variety of issues and ailments. In this particular space it is used to reduce pain and inflammation by improving the mobility and function of particular tissues and joints. We do this by placing cups on a particular portion of a muscle or tendon and having the individual move through certain range-of-motion planes unique to that specific area.

Do Adults Need a Measles Booster?

Immunizations are designed to keep people healthy. Many diseases have been pushed into relative obscurity thanks to the widespread use of vaccines. Smallpox and rinderpest were eradicated worldwide due to vaccination. Polio, tetanus, Hib, and rubella are some additional diseases that most people have forgotten thanks to the vaccinations they received in childhood. But one disease that had been largely controlled has experienced a resurgence, leaving many wondering if their immunizations are still potent enough to provide protection. Measles is back

By the end of May 2025, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had already documented 1,088 measles cases across 33 jurisdictions from New York City to Alaska. Ninety-six percent of the infected were either unvaccinated or their vaccination status was unknown. Three people died from measles as of May 2025, which were the first measles deaths in the United States since 2015. Measles is highly contagious, even more so than the flu or COVID-19.

Am I protected?

Although the CDC says the risk for widespread measles in North America remains low, people are wondering if they should revisit measles vaccination as a topic of discussion with their doctors. According to Dr. Scott Roberts, M.D., a Yale Medicine infectious disease specialist, most people will not need a measles booster, but vaccination status should be checked.

The measles vaccine first became available in the U.S. in 1963. The vaccine contains a live but significantly weakened strain of the measles virus. This modified strain is too weak to cause measles, but it is similar enough to the full-blown illness for the body’s immune system to recognize it. Previously, measles was so contagious that everyone contracted it before age 15, according to PBS, and people born before 1957 are presumed

to have lifelong immunity as a result. Most people born after 1957 would have received the shot as children. People who previously had measles (those born before 1957) as well as those who received two MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) shots as children are considered to have full immunization for life.

Who may need a measles vaccine now?

Older children, adolescents and adults born after 1957 who never had the measles and were not vaccinated or are unsure of vaccination should get at least one MMR shot. Certain groups, like students at post-secondary institutions, health care workers, international travelers, and women of childbearing age, should get two MMR shots at least 28 days apart if they’ve never been previously vaccinated for measles, advises Yale Medicine.

Before 1989, only one dose of MMR was standard. Therefore, most people born before 1989 likely received only one dose, which is still highly effective (93 percent effective at preventing illness). But the same special group of individuals noted above should consider getting a second shot to receive the modern recommendation for a full series of measles vaccinations, says Harvard Health. People vaccinated between 1963 and 1967 also didn’t receive the “live” virus, and it is recommended that they get one dose of the live vaccine at some point as well.

Anyone who has questions about their vaccination status can speak with their doctors to determine if a measles booster is warranted. Some wonder if they should have a titer test done. A titer test checks the level of antibodies in the blood, but it is only one part of the immune system’s infection-fighting capabilities, and doesn’t necessarily reflect one’s level of immunity. So it really only will indicate if there are antibodies present, which is a good indicator if a shot was administered at any point or if the person had measles. Working with a medical professional is the best way to navigate the recent rise in measles cases.

Chautauqua County's Premier

Chiropractic & Sports Medicine Clinic

• 30 minute appointments that utilize myofascial release and muscle/joint manipulation.

• These neuromuscular treatments coupled with patient-specific rehabilitative exercises aim to both relieve symptoms and prevent re-occurrence.

• There is no "quick fix" when it comes to pain. The issue must be properly diagnosed, and then treated by combining manual therapy, rehabilitative exercise, and life style changes.

• This is the difference between getting temporary relief, and actually addressing the problem.
