he House of the Potter opened in September, 1975 after William (Bill) Kirner, a native of Fanwood, New Jersey, converted the White Swan tavern into a Pottery Studio and Gallery. A degree in Art Education from West Virginia Wesleyan College, followed by an apprenticeship with potter, Lee Magdanz, spearheaded Bill’s desire to dedicate his passion to become a full time artist. He has continued since then to refine his stoneware and porcelain pottery and his love of painting Oils and Watercolors. The creative process has always been an intriguing pursuit that has led to the recording of original piano and guitar compositions. The Gallery has provided an excellent outlet for his personal expression to flourish. Music CDs now share the spotlight for Bill’s artistic endeavors. Friends and musicians, Jerry Funk and Ray Reade, have joined forces to create additional CDs with Funk-Kirner-Reade contemporary instrumentals. Functional wheel thrown pottery receive the artist’s touch with hand painted dogwood blossoms, a grape motif or other attractive glaze combinations. Whimsical castles, chess sets and decorative sculptures are also created in a distinctive and unique style. Fired to 2380 degrees in a gas kiln, the pieces are all lead free, oven proof, dishwasher and microwave safe. The local region, nature and architecture comprise the major compositions of William Kirner’s paintings. A keen sense of design and fresh use of pigments are evident in the artwork that includes Limited Edition Prints of selected original watercolors. The House of the Potter features the work of over 50 artists and craftspeople from the U.S. and Canada. Our discerning taste dictates the fine quality of items that we showcase.
