Senior Smiles Osceola rolls out a stateof-the-art mobile unit to make essential dentures and related care leading up to dentures (or partials) more accessible and affordable in local Osceola County neighborhoods. NEWS Find Your Furr-Ever Valentine at Osceola County Animal Services, During February’s $14 Adoption Promotion Osceola County District 3 Commissioner Brandon Arrington’s love of animals is manifesting with a month-long $14 adoption promotion with Osceola County Animal Services. Arrington and his wife, Kristen, are proud parents of a 10-year-old pit bull they adopted. Brody is a happy dog. He wiggles his tail when he’s excited, which is often the case when he and his dad go for rides on Arrington’s skateboard. As Brody ages, he’s inclined to enjoy more relaxed activities such as long – and slow – walks. He’s partial to belly rubs and eating. Especially eating, Arrington notes. Brody has brought such joy into the couple’s life that Arrington hopes that the FURREVER promotion in February will encourage other residents to help shelter pets find a forever home.

Rolling Out Safety: Osceola County Sheriff’s Office on Wheels Mobilizes for Senior Community Care Sheriff Marcos Lopez and the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office have once again rolled out their “O.C.S.O. on Wheels” mobile office. Aptly named “Keeping Our Seniors Safe,” this innovative mobile unit is dedicated to engaging with and serving the senior members of our community. The Sheriff Lopez’s mobile office’s mission is to bring education and resources directly to the doorstep of Osceola County’s seniors. The mobile office is set to visit various assisted living communities, providing a unique opportunity for residents to interact face-to-face with dedicated deputies. NEWS Osceola County’s Call to Action: Opioid Task Force Survey Deadline Extension Offers More Time for Vital Community Feedback
The Osceola Opioid Task Force, a collaborative initiative that will utilize funds from the settlement with the country’s largest pharmacies regarding the Opioid Crisis to address the complex challenges posed by opioid misuse within the community, has extended the deadline for community organizations to provide input on how best to battle the Opioid Crisis.
The Task Force, formed in 2023, is conducting a survey of community organizations currently fighting opioid misuse to assess which organizations may need more funding to do their work more effectively, or where there may currently be gaps in available services that settlement funds could be used to fill. The results of the survey will help direct where settlement funds could be allocated in Osceola County. To participate, organizations can visit http://bit.ly/OsceolaOpioidSurvey. The survey was originally scheduled to end January 31, 2024. That deadline has now been extended to February 7, 2024.

Empowering Tomorrow’s Voters: Elections Office Engages Osceola County High School Seniors in Voter Registration The Osceola County Supervisor of Elections Office is visiting high schools in and around Osceola County helping seniors to register to vote. This initiative is focused on empowering senior students by providing them with the resources and guidance needed to register to vote. Through this educational outreach, the elections office is not only facilitating the registration process, but also fostering civic engagement among the youth of Osceola County. Every year outreach staff visits each public high school in the county one to two times to reach all their senior students. At these visits, elections outreach staff help eligible students to register to vote and educate all students on how, when, where and why to vote. Students wishing to register to vote need to know either their Florida Driver License/Permit/ID card number or the last 4 digits of their Social Security Number.

Orlando Health Network launched innovative care models in 2023 Orlando Health Network launched various innovative health care models in 2023 to enhance the quality of patient care. Since its inception in 2013, the network has generated more than $165 million in savings to patients, payers, employers and taxpayers, according to the Clinically Integrated Network Value Report 2023.
The recently released 2023 report details how the network, part of the Orlando Health hospital system, launched multiple initiatives during 2023 to ensure that the nearly 300,000 patients it serves in Central and West Florida receive timely, efficient, and effective medical care from more than 6,600 multispecialty providers. “Our 2023 Clinically Integrated Network Value Report showcases our myriad innovative care models, clinical and quality programs, and strong performance across value-based arrangements in the past year,” said Erik Walker, MD, board chairman, Orlando Health Network. “Now serving nearly 300,000 patients, Orlando Health Network achieved notable accomplishments for the tenth year in a row through the thoughtful collaboration with our dedicated providers and health system partners. On behalf of our network, I am once again humbled to share these efforts and their accompanying achievements.” Initiatives launched by the network in 2023 include the Orlando Health Support Team for Aftercare and Resources Outpatient Centers, which are designed to effectively manage the post-hospitalization and advanced pharmacy needs of patients.

New Florida ‘Protect the Panther’ specialty license plate now available to Florida motorists A new Protect the Panther license plate is now available to Florida motorists, and features a striking photograph taken by Carlton Ward in 2018 of the first female panther documented north of the Caloosahatchee River since 1973, along with her kitten. The new license plate can be purchased at the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles or by checking with your local tax collector office for availability. The FWC is reminding the public that purchasing a Protect the Panther license plate isn’t the only way motorists can help panthers, drivers can also help by following all posted speed limits, particularly in panther zones, which are in place in several counties across south Florida to coincide with areas where panthers are known to cross. Panther speed zones help protect both Florida panthers and motorists from vehicle collisions and potential injury.

96-unit affordable housing project breaks ground in West Kissimmee, Osceola County and City of Kissimmee help fund development A $33.9 million 96unit affordable housing community is coming to West Vine Street in Kissimmee that will consist of four threestory buildings and a free standing clubhouse with a pool, cabana and other amenities. Late Wins Secure Orange Belt Conference Wrestling Title For Kowboys Wrestling in higher weight classes than normal, Osceola’s Gunner Holland scored 22 team points at 190 and Bryan Gari added 20 team points at 215 to secure the Kowboys’ narrow 222-217 win over Harmony at the 2024 Orange Belt Conference Wrestling Championships held at Celebration High School on Saturday afternoon. It was Osceola’s second straight team title and 10th in the last 13 years. Harmony finishes as runner-up for a second straight year, after winning three straight team titles from 2020-22. “This was a tough week for us as we had three varsity wrestlers out and had several others not at 100 percent because of sickness or injury,” Osceola head coach Rick Tribit said. “At the end of the day our depth made a big difference and I was especially proud of the fact that we had guys willing to sacrifice by wrestling at heavier weight classes for the good of the team.” Still Tribit emphasized that he did not want to downplay the performance of Harmony. “Coach Lorenzano can say the same thing I did about his injuries and not having some key guys available or at 100 percent. They had a terrific meet today and have a lot to be proud of.”

Nephrectomy, or removal of a kidney, may be necessary when a patient has recurrent kidney infections, irreversible damage, long-term obstruction or tumors that indicate kidney cancer. Laparoscopic nephrectomy – a minimally invasive approach – uses tiny incisions in the abdomen that result in decreased blood loss, less pain, plus a shorter hospital stay and recovery. Many patients are able to return to full activity within 3-4 weeks after surgery.

Next time you’re in a large group, take a peek at what everyone is wearing on their wrists. Odds are, many of your companions are sporting fitness trackers or smart watches.
These devices have shown success in boosting your physical activity. One analysis, published in Lancet Digital Health, found that people who wear trackers walk an average of 40 minutes more a day. That resulted in a loss of two pounds over five months, along with the potential for lower blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar. BENEFITS OF A FITNESS TRACKER Having a device that keeps track of your movements can be a great motivator. This is particularly true if you set goals for the number of steps you want to take each day. At first, you might be surprised to learn how little you actually move. But after the tracking starts, you may find yourself looking for ways (including walking around the room during phone calls or parking farther away from the grocery store entrance) to increase your step count. Trackers can also serve as an early warning system for some potential heart rhythm problems. Atrial fibrillation, also called AFib, is a condition in which your heart beats irregularly and often too fast. If untreated, it can lead to blood clots in the heart and increase your risk for stroke, heart failure and other complications. When your heart beats too slowly, also known as bradycardia, it can prevent your brain and other organs from getting enough oxygen and cause issues including fatigue, dizziness or passing out.
