St. Cloud Police Urge Community to Plan Ahead for a Safe and Responsible New Year’s Eve Celebration As New Year’s Eve approaches, it’s a time of celebration and festivity. However, it’s crucial to remember the importance of celebrating responsibly, especially when it involves alcohol consumption. Planning ahead can ensure everyone’s safety and enjoyment. Positively Osceola spoke to St. Cloud Police Officer Ryan Manning, who emphasized the importance of planning ahead and celebrating responsibly. “We obviously don’t want anyone to drive drunk. If we pull you over and you’re drunk, you could face $10,000 in fines, but worse than that, you can be hurt or killed, or kill someone else. So. planning ahead for the evening is key.” Officer Manning, who is an investigator with St. Cloud PD and rides in the agency’s motorcycle unit, has a clear message for the community, safety should be a top priority, not just during the holiday season but throughout the year. One key strategy is to have a designated driver. If you plan to drink, arrange for someone who will stay sober to drive you home. This simple step can make a significant difference in preventing accidents and ensuring everyone gets home safely. Alternatively, utilizing ride services like Uber or Lyft is an excellent way to ensure you don’t drive under the influence. These convenient services are just a few taps away on your smartphone and can be a responsible choice for getting home after celebrating.

New Expansion of Florida’s ‘Move Over’ Law Effective January 1: Here are Key Changes to Know There are some new laws about to take effect with the start of the new year, and among them is one that safety and law enforcement officials hope will make driving on Florida roadways safer, for everyone. As of January 1, 2024, the statewide ‘Move Over’ law in Florida will include all emergency, service professionals, utility workers and disabled motorists that work or are parked along Florida’s roadways.
While most drivers understand to pull over for emergency vehicles approaching from behind, state law also requires vehicles to move over a lane for certain emergency and service vehicles stopped on the side of the road, or slow down if they cannot safely move over. In 2022, 170 crashes and 14,130 citations were issued in Florida for motorists failing to move over. Those who were issued citations were primarily between 20 and 50.

NEWS Hope Partnership, Osceola Community Health Services Among 18 Organizations Awarded Community Grants by Orlando Health As part of Orlando Health’s ongoing commitment to be engaged and involved in Central Florida, the organization recently awarded grants to 18 local organizations through its community grant program to assist in coordinating, enriching and supporting efforts that help promote health and wellness in the community. Two of those organizations were from Osceola County, Hope Partnership, and Osceola Community Health Services. In 2024, Orlando Health awarded nearly $600,000 total. “It is our honor and privilege each year to award grants to organizations who are making strides in Central Florida when it comes to health and wellness,” said Lainie Fox Ackerman, assistant vice president, Orlando Health External Affairs and Community Benefit. “Investing in these incredible partners is another step forward in building a healthier Central Florida.”

Florida’s 2023 Toll Relief Program to Conclude by Year-End
The Florida Toll Relief Program, a significant initiative proposed by Governor Ron DeSantis, has been a relief measure for Florida’s motorists throughout 2023. This program, aimed at providing financial relief to regular commuters, is set to conclude at the end of the year.
Under the program, individuals with an E-PASS account, or other valid transponder system like SunPass in good standing, driving 2-axle vehicles, and accumulating 35 or more toll transactions per month could benefit from toll rebates. This initiative was part of a broader effort to ease transportation costs for Florida residents who frequently use toll roads.

Powerball Jackpot Grows to $760 Million as the New Year Approaches With one day to go until the New Year, the Powerball jackpot has risen to an estimated $760 million. The jackpot has an estimated cash value of $383.6 million. The next drawing is set for tonight, Saturday night December 30 at 10:59 p.m. ET.
This is the fourth Powerball jackpot to climb above half a billion dollars this calendar year. The Powerball jackpot was previously won on Oct. 11, 2023, by a ticket in California that won a grand prize worth $1.765 billion. In these colder months, particularly as 2023 gives way to 2024 with predicted lows in the low 40s, these gentle giants seek refuge in warmer waters to survive.
Manatees, often called sea cows, are particularly susceptible to cold stress due to their low metabolic rate and lack of insulating fat. In response to the dropping temperatures, they migrate to warmer habitats, often congregating in natural springs or near power plant outflows where the water remains a constant, warmer temperature.

NEWS Orlando Health St. Cloud Hospital doctor performs first laparoscopic nephrectomy – kidney removal surgery Orlando Health St. Cloud Hospital’s Dr. Sarat Sabharwal performed the hospital’s first laparoscopic nephrectomy this month, a milestone for patient care. Nephrectomy, or removal of a kidney, may be necessary when a patient has recurrent kidney infections, irreversible damage, long-term obstruction or tumors that indicate kidney cancer. Laparoscopic nephrectomy – a minimally invasive approach – uses tiny incisions in the abdomen that result in decreased blood loss, less pain, plus a shorter hospital stay and recovery. Many patients are able to return to full activity within 3-4 weeks after surgery.

Mecum Kissimmee, World’s Largest Collector Car Auction to Return to Kissimmee January 2-14 Mecum Kissimmee 2024, the 25th anniversary celebration of The World’s Largest Collector Car Auction is returning this January 2-14 at Osceola Heritage Park in Kissimmee, Florida, and according to Mecum officials, there will be more vehicles, more road art, and more exhibits to view, than ever before! The car count for the anniversary of the world record-setting event is poised to outpace that of previous years, with the diverse selection including American muscle cars, ‘50s classics, Corvettes, exotics, trucks, Hot Rods, customs and more. Live coverage of the auction will be available for viewing on MotorTrendTV and MotorTrend+. Admission to Mecum Kissimmee is $30 per person, per day or $75 for a three-day pass; children 12 and younger receive complimentary admission. Energy drinks and other caffeine-packed beverages have become increasingly popular, particularly with teens and young adults. While most people can drink them safely, they can be a health threat if you have heart issues or high blood pressure.
It is not uncommon to find energy drinks that contain 200 mg of caffeine – or roughly the equivalent of six cans of soda or two cups of coffee. The average person should drink no more than 400 mg of caffeine each day, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Even more troubling: It might not always be obvious that a beverage is highly caffeinated. You should always read labels.

Orlando Health: How To Make New Year’s Resolutions You Won’t Abandon Ah, resolutions. The road through late winter and early spring is littered with abandoned best intentions. But making diet and nutrition changes that will stick is possible. The trick is being ready, realistic and willing to call for backup when that road gets a little rocky. For most of us, the biggest impediment to making lifestyle changes is the perception — or reality — of not enough time, money or skill to achieve our goals. Sometimes those are just excuses. The real issue is believing you can’t do it. But mindsets can be altered. Be Prepared Mental readiness is the first — and sometimes biggest — hurdle in making lasting change. Dietitians employ a model called “stages of change:” precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, action and maintenance. • If you’re precontemplation, you don’t know what you need to work on, or you need more information. Your homework at this stage is to ask yourself, why is this change important? • In contemplation, you know there’s an issue, but you’re not sure how to fix it. For dietitians, the work here is to give patients a place to start and show them how change could happen. • In the preparation stage, a friend, family member, co-worker or dietitian can help you plan how you will change your behavior. • Action is when you are actively living the change. At this point, accountability is key, with someone to check in with you and confirm you are on track. (Perhaps that same friend, family member or dietitian.) • In maintenance, you’ve been on the right road for a while but want support in sustaining new behaviors and avoiding what didn’t work for you. Maintaining is sometimes harder than anticipated, as old patterns can be hard to shake.
