City of Kissimmee Unveils New State-of-the-Art MobilityEnhanced Playground at Kissimmee Lakefront Park The City of Kissimmee unveiled an innovative and groundbreaking playground at Kissimmee Lakefront Park on Friday, thanks to the collaboration between BCI Burke and the City of Kissimmee Parks and Recreation Department. “Building strong bonds with our partners allows the City of Kissimmee to continually enhance the lives and experience of everyone enjoying our community.” says City Manager Mike Steigerwald. The previous playground in the Veterans Lawn of Kissimmee Lakefront Park (near the Monument of States) was removed making room for one of Burke’s newest playground designs featuring an innovative tower feature. This exciting design was intentionally built to allow each child to customize their experience based on their growth and ability level. Notably, the play system features a state-of-the-art 360-degree loop that enables children with varying levels of mobility to join in the fun, promoting inclusivity. The unveiling of this playground coincided with Burke’s National Sales Conference held in Orlando, providing Burke’s employees with an exclusive preview of this unique play system. “We’ve worked with the City of Kissimmee to create a first of its kind play area. It’s part of what we love – to leave the places we visit with a memorable play experience that will serve their community for years to come.” says Mike Phelan President and CEO of BCI Burke.

NEWS City of St. Cloud Invites Community to Annual MLK Day of Service The City of St. Cloud is inviting the community to join them in honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at this year’s MLK Day of Service. The MLK Day of Service will take place at Hopkins Park on Monday, Jan. 15 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and is a community clean-up event, suitable for all ages. “This event is a way for our community to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by giving back to the community during this community clean-up,” said Mayor Nathan Blackwell. “We encourage our residents to dress comfortably and join us. We have tasks available for all ages.” Lunch will be provided to all volunteers. Hopkins Park is located at 620 E. 17th St. in St. Cloud.

Texas, Florida Top Growth States Again in 2023, According to U-Haul Migration Data Trends Florida ranked just behind Texas in netting the largest number of movers in oneway U-Haul equipment in 2023, marking the third consecutive year the two states have finished atop the U-Haul Growth Index. After Texas and Florida were North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee. Idaho, Washington, Arizona, Colorado and Virginia round out the top 10 states for growth. For the fourth year in a row, California reflected the largest net loss of one-way movers. Other bottom-five states for growth are Michigan, New Jersey, Illinois and Massachusetts. New York ranks 43rd. U-Haul calculates growth states by each state’s net gain (or loss) of one-way equipment from customer transactions in a calendar year. The U-Haul Growth Index is compiled from more than 2.5 million one-way U-Haul truck, trailer and U-Box moving container transactions that occur annually across the U.S. and Canada. “While one-way transactions in 2023 remained below the record-breaking levels we witnessed immediately following the pandemic, we continued to see many of the same geographical trends from U-Haul customers moving between states,” said John “J.T.” Taylor, U-Haul International president. “Migration to states in the Southeast and Southwest is still very pronounced. Demand for one-way equipment out of certain markets in the Northeast, Midwest and West Coast mirrors what we have seen during recent moving cycles. Wherever DIY customers go, and whatever mobility and selfstorage needs they have in 2024, U-Haul will be there with solutions.”

Orlando Health Network launched innovative care models in 2023 Orlando Health Network launched various innovative health care models in 2023 to enhance the quality of patient care. Since its inception in 2013, the network has generated more than $165 million in savings to patients, payers, employers and taxpayers, according to the Clinically Integrated Network Value Report 2023.
The recently released 2023 report details how the network, part of the Orlando Health hospital system, launched multiple initiatives during 2023 to ensure that the nearly 300,000 patients it serves in Central and West Florida receive timely, efficient, and effective medical care from more than 6,600 multispecialty providers. “Our 2023 Clinically Integrated Network Value Report showcases our myriad innovative care models, clinical and quality programs, and strong performance across value-based arrangements in the past year,” said Erik Walker, MD, board chairman, Orlando Health Network. “Now serving nearly 300,000 patients, Orlando Health Network achieved notable accomplishments for the tenth year in a row through the thoughtful collaboration with our dedicated providers and health system partners. On behalf of our network, I am once again humbled to share these efforts and their accompanying achievements.” Initiatives launched by the network in 2023 include the Orlando Health Support Team for Aftercare and Resources Outpatient Centers, which are designed to effectively manage the post-hospitalization and advanced pharmacy needs of patients.

SPORTS Baker Leads St. Cloud Bulldogs to Upset Win Over Harmony Longhorns in Boys Basketball With star player Alex Springs sitting on the bench in foul trouble for long stretches of the game, sophomore center Malaki Baker scored eight points, blocked six shots and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead the St. Cloud Bulldogs to a 49-42 upset win over Harmony in boys basketball on Wednesday night. “He (Baker) is really starting to come into his own,” St. Cloud coach Tommy Billiteri said. “When Alex had to sit down early, his play kept us in the game. Malaki was certainly was a difference maker tonight but you could say that about a bunch of our guys. Everyone gave maximum effort we had some different guys make key plays when we needed them the most.” It was a physical game throughout and Springs found himself on the bench just two minutes into the game when he picked up a second offensive foul. But neither team could find an offensive rhythm and two big blocks by Baker kept the game close as Harmony forged a 9-6 lead after one period. Springs would then make his presence felt when he re-entered the game with six minutes remaining in the second — scoring nine points in that stretch as the Bulldogs used a 15-7 period to take a 21-16 lead into the locker room. Things would get dicey midway through the third period. Springs would return to the bench after picking up his fourth foul with 3:25 remaining in the third. Still St. Cloud was able to maintain the lead when Ryan Rodriguez was knocked to the floor while making a driving layup with 1:35 remaining in third period. Several players on both teams got into a shoving match after the play and three technical fouls were called – two on St. Cloud and one on Harmony.

NEWS Orlando Health St. Cloud Hospital doctor performs first laparoscopic nephrectomy – kidney removal surgery Orlando Health St. Cloud Hospital’s Dr. Sarat Sabharwal performed the hospital’s first laparoscopic nephrectomy this month, a milestone for patient care. Nephrectomy, or removal of a kidney, may be necessary when a patient has recurrent kidney infections, irreversible damage, long-term obstruction or tumors that indicate kidney cancer. Laparoscopic nephrectomy – a minimally invasive approach – uses tiny incisions in the abdomen that result in decreased blood loss, less pain, plus a shorter hospital stay and recovery. Many patients are able to return to full activity within 3-4 weeks after surgery.

Mecum Kissimmee, World’s Largest Collector Car Auction to Return to Kissimmee January 2-14 Mecum Kissimmee 2024, the 25th anniversary celebration of The World’s Largest Collector Car Auction is returning this January 2-14 at Osceola Heritage Park in Kissimmee, Florida, and according to Mecum officials, there will be more vehicles, more road art, and more exhibits to view, than ever before! The car count for the anniversary of the world record-setting event is poised to outpace that of previous years, with the diverse selection including American muscle cars, ‘50s classics, Corvettes, exotics, trucks, Hot Rods, customs and more. Live coverage of the auction will be available for viewing on MotorTrendTV and MotorTrend+. Admission to Mecum Kissimmee is $30 per person, per day or $75 for a three-day pass; children 12 and younger receive complimentary admission. Gates open daily at 8 a.m. for previewing, with the auctions taking place Tuesday, Jan. 2 through Wednesday, Jan. 10 at 10 a.m., and Thursday, Jan. 11 through Sunday. • Temperature (too cold or too hot) • The need for a hug WHAT IS BABY SIGN LANGUAGE? Baby Sign Language uses American Sign Language (ASL) hand gestures and facial movements without the grammar and sentence structure of ASL to help babies communicate. WHEN TO TEACH BABY SIGN LANGUAGE You may have heard that teaching your Baby Sign Language delays learning to talk, but that’s not true. In fact, using baby signs actually supports language development because babies can move their bodies consistently to make signs much earlier than they learn to use their voices. Baby Sign Language serves as a visual model for upcoming speech and language. The best time to begin teaching your infant Baby Sign Language is as soon as you notice an active interest in communicating with you. Typically, this happens when your child waves at you or can point to desired items. This can be as early as 6 months old, but the average age is usually 8 or 9 months. Most babies will start signing back somewhere between 10 and 14 months.
