America’s Future Shines at the 2024 Disney Dreamers Academy in Walt Disney World Resort
They want to build rocket ships that soar through the galaxy; teach people nationwide how to make better nutritional choices; and spread even more magic at The Most Magical Place on Earth. They are high school students from the 2024 class of Disney Dreamers Academy, and they all have the same thing in common – Big Dreams!
The new class of 100 students from around the country was revealed today on the Martin Luther King Day holiday by Walt Disney World Resort in Florida, where the annual mentoring program was created to broaden career awareness and inspire teens from Black and underrepresented communities to dream beyond their wildest imaginations. The selected students were featured during a live TV segment on ABC’s “Good Morning America.’’ The segment highlighted one of the selected students,16-year-old Sophia of South Orange, New Jersey, who is involved with her local YMCA, Girls Scouts, orchestra, lacrosse and the math team, and aspires to become an aerospace engineer. At the four-day program at Walt Disney World, Sophia and the other Disney Dreamers will engage with business leaders, Disney executives, celebrities and educators, who will immerse them in workshops and seminars designed to supercharge their career dreams. NEWS KUA to Host Free Movie in the Park Featuring ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider Verse’ at Kissimmee’s Lakefront Park Kissimmee Utility Authority, in partnership with the City of Kissimmee, will host a free Movie in the Park event, Friday, Feb. 2 at the Veterans Lawn of Kissimmee Lakefront Park as part of KUA’s annual 6-month Movie in the Park series. The event will feature “Spider-Man: Across the Spider Verse,” shown on a giant 50-foot screen.
Activities begin at 5:30 p.m., followed by the movie at 7 p.m. Participants are encouraged to bring a lawn chair or blanket. The movie will also feature closed captioning for the hearing impaired. KUA’s inflatable Kids Power Zone, a craft station, a photo booth, free popcorn, and prize giveaways will all be part of tonight’s free event. Onsite concessions will also be available.

Texas, Florida Top Growth States Again in 2023, According to U-Haul Migration Data Trends Florida ranked just behind Texas in netting the largest number of movers in oneway U-Haul equipment in 2023, marking the third consecutive year the two states have finished atop the U-Haul Growth Index. After Texas and Florida were North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee. Idaho, Washington, Arizona, Colorado and Virginia round out the top 10 states for growth. For the fourth year in a row, California reflected the largest net loss of one-way movers. Other bottom-five states for growth are Michigan, New Jersey, Illinois and Massachusetts. New York ranks 43rd. U-Haul calculates growth states by each state’s net gain (or loss) of one-way equipment from customer transactions in a calendar year. The U-Haul Growth Index is compiled from more than 2.5 million one-way U-Haul truck, trailer and U-Box moving container transactions that occur annually across the U.S. and Canada. “While one-way transactions in 2023 remained below the record-breaking levels we witnessed immediately following the pandemic, we continued to see many of the same geographical trends from U-Haul customers moving between states,” said John “J.T.” Taylor, U-Haul International president. “Migration to states in the Southeast and Southwest is still very pronounced. Demand for one-way equipment out of certain markets in the Northeast, Midwest and West Coast mirrors what we have seen during recent moving cycles. Wherever DIY customers go, and whatever mobility and selfstorage needs they have in 2024, U-Haul will be there with solutions.”

Democrat Tom Keen Edges Out Republican Erika Booth by 590 Votes in Florida House District 35 Special Election Democrat Tom Keen narrowly defeated Republican Erika Booth by 590 votes in a special election held Tuesday for state House District 35, the seat vacated by former Republican State Representative Fred Hawkins, who resigned in 2023 to take over the position of president at South Florida State College. Keen received a total of 11,390 votes to Erika Booth’s 10,800, or 51.3% of the vote going to Keen to Booth’s 48.7%. Keen will begin running almost immediately as the seat will be up again for a full 2-year term in November.

Orlando Health Network launched innovative care models in 2023 Orlando Health Network launched various innovative health care models in 2023 to enhance the quality of patient care. Since its inception in 2013, the network has generated more than $165 million in savings to patients, payers, employers and taxpayers, according to the Clinically Integrated Network Value Report 2023.
The recently released 2023 report details how the network, part of the Orlando Health hospital system, launched multiple initiatives during 2023 to ensure that the nearly 300,000 patients it serves in Central and West Florida receive timely, efficient, and effective medical care from more than 6,600 multispecialty providers. “Our 2023 Clinically Integrated Network Value Report showcases our myriad innovative care models, clinical and quality programs, and strong performance across value-based arrangements in the past year,” said Erik Walker, MD, board chairman, Orlando Health Network. “Now serving nearly 300,000 patients, Orlando Health Network achieved notable accomplishments for the tenth year in a row through the thoughtful collaboration with our dedicated providers and health system partners. On behalf of our network, I am once again humbled to share these efforts and their accompanying achievements.” Initiatives launched by the network in 2023 include the Orlando Health Support Team for Aftercare and Resources Outpatient Centers, which are designed to effectively manage the post-hospitalization and advanced pharmacy needs of patients.

SPORTS It’s Championship Week in Osceola County High School Sports! Three Orange Belt Conference champions will be crowned on Friday, as weeklong OBC tournaments will be held in girls basketball and boys soccer; while the one-day girls weightlifting championship will be held at Harmony’s gymnasium. Girls’ basketball begins on Tuesday with four quarterfinal games. Semifinal and playback consolation games are slated for Thursday with first and second round games being played on the campuses of the highest seeds. The third place and championship games will be played on Friday night (5:30 p.m. and 7 p.m.) at Tohopekaliga. Boys’ soccer will have quarter and semifinals contested on Tuesday and Wednesday nights, with the highest seed hosting. Third place (5 p.m.) and championship games (7 p.m.) will be played at Harmony on Friday night. Since both teams have met numerous times this year with the Bulldogs coming out on top each time, St. Cloud will be heavy favorites to win their 13th consecutive team championships; while Harmony and Tohopekaliga will most likely be battling for second place. St. Cloud is undefeated against county opposition this year. “We’re going to be the favorites but we certainly not taking anything for granted,” St. Cloud coach Cory Aun said. “This meet doesn’t really factor into the post-season but it’s a source of pride for our kids as far as bragging rights that come with being county champions. Winning the OBC Championship is one of our top goals every year.” Top lifters in the meet include St. Cloud’s Emily Deluca (100-lb. class), Ashley Aun (110), Sophia Recio (129),Belen Gonzalez (154) and Jaylonie Mejia (183); Tohopekaliga’s Emily Martinez (119) and Morgan Pascual (169); and Harmony’s Alexa Woodman (139) and Yazreal Martinez (119).

NEWS Orlando Health St. Cloud Hospital doctor performs first laparoscopic nephrectomy – kidney removal surgery Orlando Health St. Cloud Hospital’s Dr. Sarat Sabharwal performed the hospital’s first laparoscopic nephrectomy this month, a milestone for patient care. Nephrectomy, or removal of a kidney, may be necessary when a patient has recurrent kidney infections, irreversible damage, long-term obstruction or tumors that indicate kidney cancer. Laparoscopic nephrectomy – a minimally invasive approach – uses tiny incisions in the abdomen that result in decreased blood loss, less pain, plus a shorter hospital stay and recovery. Many patients are able to return to full activity within 3-4 weeks after surgery.

The condition, which causes your heart muscle to thicken for no apparent reason, is often inherited. You can have the disease and never know it. Researchers are still learning about the causes of this disease. Most cases are passed down from a parent to a child, but it also is linked to high blood pressure and age. There are times, however, when the cause remains unknown. Here’s what you need to know. Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Symptoms Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) can be difficult to diagnose because some people never have noticeable symptoms. This is particularly troubling with young athletes, who appear to be in peak health – without realizing they have a potentially life-threatening disease. The disease offers yet another reminder of the importance of annual physical exams with a primary care doctor, who may notice important heart changes during routine tests. When symptoms do appear, they include: • Chest pain: This could happen during physical activity, rest or after meals. • Shortness of breath and fatigue: These symptoms get worse with exertion. • Fainting or passing out: This may be caused by irregular heart rhythms during exercise. • Heart palpitations: Your heart feels like it is fluttering or beating too fast. • Abnormal heartbeat (arrhythmia): You may have a fast heartbeat as result of atrial fibrillation or ventricular tachycardia.
