Winter in the Pacific Northwest is characterized by gray skies and nonstop rain, punctuated by occasional snow days and ice storms. It can be downright gloomy. But from my perspective, the dark and cold only highlights the importance of the arts, and the valuable role the College of the Arts plays in our community. During the winter months, our faculty and students fill the calendar with warmth, light, energy and joy, helping us bear up during the darkest days. This term is no exception. In February, we will welcome the return of the Portland Winter Light Festival to the PSU campus, celebrating the theme of this year’s festival, “All the Little Things,” with a focus on the art of LAIKA and the many details that go into creating their visionary cinematic works. Also in February, our Theater program will produce the galvanizing rock musical “Spring Awakening,” its first musical in many years, while our PSU choirs continue their landmark 50th season of sparkling concerts, art faculty members Lisa Jarrett and Dr. Kiara Hill present momentous exhibitions at the Portland Art Museum, and our Music, Film, Graphic Design and Architecture programs offer their usual impressive array of arts experiences to fill our darkest corners with the light of new ideas. I hope you’ll join us at some of these remarkable events, and start off your new year with a magical spark of creativity and inspiration.

On the cover: The Portland Winter Light Festival returns to the PSU campus February 6–7 and 13–14, as part of this free, citywide celebration of all things glittering, sparkling, and glowing – which takes place at the darkest time of winter. This year, we’ve partnered with Portland-based LAIKA for exciting new installations at PSU – some of which will be created by PSU faculty artists – with wildly creative light-based projections illustrating the many details, shapes, colors, and visionary ideas that go into the making of LAIKA’s award-winning, handcrafted films. There’s no place like home: How does an art school say good-bye to its home for the last 25 years? By holding an exhibition, naturally. Archiving the Building: The 5th Avenue Years is a collection of memories gathered by students in the Schnitzer School of Art + Art History + Design’s Creative Archiving course, as the school prepares to move out of the buildings on SW 5th Avenue that have served as base of operations since the early 2000s, and into the brand-new space on the South Park Blocks this summer. This exhibition is a way to honor and remember all that has happened in these buildings: the friendships and ideas that took root, the work made late at night, the classes that sparked something new, and the community that continues to grow. It’s a record of learning, teaching, and creating together in this place. Runs January 5–February 25, with a closing celebration on February 25 from 10am to 12 noon. See page 3.

Show & Tell Design Lecture Series: Macy Eiesland, Graphic Designer at Wieden+Kennedy—Creating work that lives somewhere between clean systems and the human hand, Portlandbased designer Macy Eiesland uses conceptual design to explore the systems that connect people and brands. A graduate of PSU’s Graphic Design program, she’s spent the last three years making work at Wieden+Kennedy Portland for brands like Lilly, Caldera, Visa and Skims. Oregon Historical Society: Gaining Ground Film Screening— The Oregon Historical Society and PSU School of Film present a memorial screening of “Gaining Ground” (2016), a film directed, edited and shot by Portland filmmaker Elaine Velazquez, who passed away in August 2025. From farms in the fertile Willamette Valley to the marginalized food desert of Richmond, California, “Gaining Ground” shows how growing healthy food is a catalyst for igniting hope and empowerment in rural and urban communities. Bursting forth: PSU’s Theater Arts program heats up the Lincoln Performance Hall stage this Winter with “Spring Awakening,” the 2006 rock musical that the New York Times called “a straight shot of eroticism.” Based on Frank Wedekind’s 1891 play and set in the rigid and repressive society of 19th-century Germany, this “brave new musical, haunting and electrifying by turns, restores the mystery, the thrill and quite a bit of the terror” of adolescence. In the musical, directed at PSU by Theresa Robbins Dudeck, a group of teenagers navigate the treacherous terrain of growing up—confronting sex, pregnancy, love, loss, and the suffocating expectations of school and parents. Driven by a riveting, ferocious alt-rock score by Duncan Sheik, “Spring Awakening” offers a powerful and poignant theatrical experience that resonates as deeply today as when it premiered nearly 20 years ago. Show & Tell Design Lecture Series: Mike Anderson, Creative Director & Film Director—Mike Anderson’s aesthetic exists at the edge of absurdity, with characters built to jolt and amaze. With his comedy talent hosted at Adult Swim and FXX, and in creative director work with Meta, Apple and Amazon Prime, he captures today’s diverse visual, social, and technical landscapes, traipsing between digital cutting-edge gaming aesthetics and handcrafted traditional animation. United through song: Michael Barrett, Director of Choral Activities at University of Pretoria and conductor of Tuks Camerata, one of South Africa’s most esteemed choral ensembles, joins PSU’s Chamber, Rose and Thorn Choirs on February 22 for A South African Celebration—a massive, joyous festival of singing. A citywide choir made up of a conglomeration of Portland’s best high school choral ensembles makes this concert a powerhouse of musical storytelling, celebrating how voices across generations, cultures and continents can intertwine and unite us. Music @ Midday: The Art of English Song—This program celebrates English poetry through song, with a specific focus on female composers and feminine themes. The richness and complexity of Benjamin Britten’s art songs in the mid-20th century is matched by his lesser-known contemporaries Madeleine Dring and Rebecca Clarke, and American poet Edna St. Vincent Millay continues to inspire scores of composers to set her beautiful lyrical words to music. Community ties: The grand reopening of the Portland Art Museum in November was made even more exciting by the launch of a pair of exhibitions created by professors in the Schnitzer School of Art + Art History + Design. Professor Lisa Jarrett’s Tenderhead traces the connection between migration, diaspora and surrogate homelands and beauty supply stores for Black communities, featuring new works and installations that activate the abundant patterns, colors, images and textures found in these stores. Dr. Kiara Hill, through her collaboration with Cultural Bearers Archive, Inc., has created Black Arts PDX, a display of ephemera and extended documentary trailer that foregrounds the history of the Black visual arts community in Northeast Portland. This rotating installation sheds light on the practices of key figures who were instrumental in shaping the perception of Black arts and culture in our city. Whether utilitarian or decorative, these ephemera highlight the ways in which Black artists sought to beautify the city and utilize their technical skills to address the needs of Black people in the community. Both shows run through November 2026. See page 2.
