At long last, we are nearing the completion of the beautiful new home for the Schnitzer School of Art + Art History + Design. A herculean collaborative endeavor more than a decade in the making, construction on this glorious new mass-timber building will be complete in late May, and the faculty and staff will move into their new workspaces during the summer. Students will begin occupying the classrooms, studios, gallery spaces and workshops this Fall.

Words cannot describe how proud, fortunate and excited I feel knowing that this building will soon be shared with the PSU community and the city of Portland. The first artscentered structure to be built in Portland in many years, this will be a buzzing hub of creativity and community, taking its rightful place along the north-south cultural corridor that includes the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall, Antoinette Hatfield Hall, Oregon Historical Society, Portland Art Museum, Lincoln Hall, Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art at PSU, Shattuck Hall and Native American Student and Community Center. In the Fall, we’ll welcome the community in to show off our new spaces, but in the meantime, our College of the Arts calendar continues to hum with dazzling activity in every discipline. Peruse this Spring’s events and treat yourself to diverse and fulfilling artistic experiences! You’ll find dozens of inspiring offerings, from innovative art exhibitions and film screenings to architecture lectures and theatrical and musical performances—showcasing our outstanding students and faculty. Join me in soaking in their energy, enthusiasm, fresh ideas, hard work and talent.

Arlene Schnitzer Visual Arts Prize Exhibition—This annual exhibition celebrates the work of recipients of the Arlene Schnitzer Visual Arts Prize, an award that was established in 2013 to recognize student achievement in the Schnitzer School of Art + Art History + Design and to raise awareness of the extraordinary quality of art education at PSU. Silver screen: Professor Mark Berrettini’s course FILM 487: The Cinema of Jafar Panahi, will screen Panahi’s work at Portland’s historic Hollywood Theatre, and community members are invited to attend. Professor Berrettini will give a brief talk about this Iranian director who regularly pushes the boundaries of narrative and political cinema while facing censorship and political repression. Students will examine Panahi’s work within the context of cinema history and the constricted landscape of film production in Iran. The weekly screenings include the Oscar-nominated film It Was Just an Accident. Screenings take place April 16 through May 28. See below.

Comic relief: The School of Film celebrates this beloved art form on May 16 with the second annual Comics Confluence Festival, a power-packed day of creativity, insider knowledge, and comic book magic. New Wave Opera: Deep Water—”Deep Water,” by PSU Music & Theater professor Caroline Louise Miller, is a post-apocalyptic fantasy opera that investigates rage, grief, play and persistence in the face of gargantuan destructive forces. Queer teenage companions Val and Bluejay chronicle the fall of humanity during the Anthropocene, acting as witnesses and documentarians while finding resilience through love and play.
