Excitement is brewing along the Park Blocks. If you’ve been on campus recently, you’ve undoubtedly noticed the elegant green structure shimmering just south of Shattuck Hall. Decades in the making, this stunning new home for the Jordan Schnitzer School of Art + Art History + Design is finally ready to welcome students, faculty and staff. I’m simply bursting with pride at our collective accomplishment, and I thank the faculty, donors, students, staff and alumni whose advocacy, generosity, persistence and vision have made this building possible. But we aren’t done yet! As we ride the wave of momentum generated by the building’s completion, we are now swiftly moving toward our next win for the arts in Portland: a new Performing Arts and Culture Center to be located on PSU’s campus at the southern end of downtown. With the support of so many of Portland’s artists and arts advocates, it feels as if we have the wind at our backs, moving us steadily closer toward the realization of this transformational performing arts center—actualizing our vision of becoming the epicenter of creativity in the Portland region. In the meantime, our students and faculty are busy doing what they do best: creating, rehearsing, designing, writing, making, connecting, learning, thinking and performing. And the results are nothing short of phenomenal. From our spectacular PSU Opera, celebrating its 50th anniversary season, to our exquisite choirs with their concert season titled “Tree of Life,” a series of fascinating architecture lectures and a multiplicity of inventive art events and exhibitions in our brand-new Art Building—our students and faculty will astound, inspire, challenge and energize you through their work. I look forward to seeing you at some of these events this Fall!

Converge 45 Triennial Exhibition: Here, To you, Now— The new Art Building is one of 16 venues hosting this citywide triennial, inspired by the writing of Ursula K. Le Guin. Gutted: The Mystery of the Old Art Building—A Case Too Impossible to Solve—Created by students Deven Truong, Kate Kolakowski and Patrick Santiago, this exhibition blurs fact and fiction as it investigates the mysteries embedded within PSU’s former Art Building, which faces demolition and transition. Anish Kapoor: Dissolving Margins, From the Collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and His Family Foundation—Anish Kapoor is renowned for works on an architectural scale such as Cloud Gate (2004) in Chicago’s Millennium Park, as well as a career-long commitment to printmaking that began in the 1970s. Coming home: The eagerly awaited new home for the Jordan Schnitzer School of Art + Art History + Design is opening its doors this term, bringing its programs together under one roof. PSU’s first mass timber structure, the building is an innovative, welcoming hub of creativity. Designed by Portlandbased LEVER Architecture, the building features warm wood tones, distinctive colors, high ceilings and soaring windows. Specialized spaces and classrooms are also dedicated to practices such as photography, printmaking, painting, drawing, animation, time-based arts, graphic design and art history. The school’s community will celebrate the new building with events throughout the year, starting with the Grand Opening celebration on Tuesday, October 13—featuring self-guided tours, participatory art activities, mini-workshops and more. The Story of YInMn Blue: Lecture with Dr. Mas Subramanian—Dr. Mas Subramanian, the inventor of YInMn Blue—the first new blue pigment discovered in more than 200 years—discusses the science, history and future of color. Arbor vitae: The first concert of the PSU Choirs’ concert season, Tree of Life, November 20 and 22, explores themes of interconnectedness through music performed by the PSU Chamber, Rose and Thorn choirs. The program pairs traditional choral works with music by a new generation of Southeast Asian composers. At its center is “Gayatri,” by Indonesian composer Bagus Utomo, a work inspired by the legendary queen whose wisdom and spiritual devotion are an enduring part of Indonesian cultural heritage. The concert also features works by Budi Susanto Yohanes, Ily Matthew Maniano and Matthew Lyon Hazzard. Several of these pieces will be recorded later this year by the internationally acclaimed PSU Chamber Choir at Skywalker Sound. See page 9.

PSU Theater Arts: Do You Feel Anger?—Do You Feel Anger? lives in the familiar world of water coolers, staplers and office conference rooms, but Nelson-Greenberg’s language quickly reveals something far stranger underneath. When Sofia, an empathy coach, arrives at a debt collection agency as part of a lawsuit settlement, she finds a workplace where toxic masculinity has so thoroughly warped the atmosphere that feelings, empathy and basic human decency have become alien concepts. Absurd and laugh-out-loud funny, the play is populated by an unusual cast of characters whose skewed logic and bizarre non-sequiturs mask a genuinely unsettling hidden truth. Taking flight: In the wake of 2022, when the Women, Life, Freedom movement took hold in Iran and across the world, College of the Arts professors Christopher Whyte, percussion, and Taravat Talepasand, art practice, formed the idea for a multidisciplinary collaboration centered on the voices and stories of Iranian women through music, film, visual art and storytelling. Sharing a common familial heritage (both having parents who immigrated from Iran to the U.S. during and before the Iranian Revolution of 1979), the two colleagues proposed the project to the Oregon Community Foundation and received a Creative Heights grant to produce it. The result of the collaboration, “With Her Own Wings,” is a world premiere concert-length multidisciplinary performance exploring the experiences of women in Iran and across the global diaspora through newly commissioned music, documentary film, visual art and spoken narrative. The performance, on Thursday, November 19, features new works by composers Anahita Abbasi, Niloufar Nourbakhsh and Aida Shirazi. PSU Theater professor Solomon Weisbard contributes lighting and production design. See page 8.

Love connection: PSU Opera program kicks off its 50th anniversary season with Michael Ching’s “Speed Dating Tonight!” Set over the course of a single evening at a local bar, this clever, heartwarming 2013 opera follows a revolving cast of singles searching for that elusive spark. There’s the dreamer, the hopeless romantic, the bashful, the over-sharer, the chronically distracted . . . each getting their moment in the spotlight through music that is equal parts tender, heartbreaking, and hilarious. Written with duets and ensembles for up to 45 voices, “Speed Dating Tonight!” has a flexible modular structure that can be customized to fit any cast size, voice type, or gender identity. PSU Opera’s version of “Speed Dating Tonight!” features 35 song selections and arrangements specifically chosen to reflect the unique assortment of voices in the 12-member cast. At its heart, this is a show about the universal human longing to be seen and cherished by another person. Woven through the interactions is another question: can a genuine connection actually happen in five minutes or less? With Michael Ching’s delightful opera, the answer is decidedly yes. Runs November 28 through December 6. See below.

VIEW ALL Moving pictures: Each June, the cinematic and scholarly work of PSU Film students is celebrated at the annual PSU Film Student Showcase, where budding filmmakers share their portfolios with industry professionals. At this year’s event, a screening in the Studio Theater showed the top films, which included a love letter to the Lloyd Center’s ice rink (featuring beloved skaters Jerry and Tally Leonard), a charming story of an accidental romantic connection, a documentary about an animal rescue farm, and a meditation on the nature of windows (featuring the voice of Architecture professor Clive Knights).
