The cooler temperatures and turning leaves of autumn are just around the corner, bringing the excitement of a new academic year, with all its sparkling creativity and purposeful energy.

Fall brings so many reasons for celebration in the College of the Arts. Work has officially begun on the construction of our stunning new state-of-the-art building for the Schnitzer School of Art + Art History + Design (the school’s name changed this past spring to honor Jordan Schnitzer for his phenomenal generosity). The new building is expected to be ready in 2026, and what a boon for our campus it will be!

The season offers an abundance of events, as always. In the School of Music & Theater, we’ll enjoy everything from PSU Opera’s “The Gift of the Magi” to the Percussion Ensemble’s fall recital, to joyous concerts by our distinguished choirs. The School of Film will screen fascinating films from around the world. The School of Architecture’s Fridays@1 talks promise a host of thoughtprovoking conversations on design in the built environment, and the Graphic Design program’s Show & Tell series features conversations with creatives from Portland and beyond.

These are but a few examples of the inspirational and invigorating events on our calendar, and I invite you to join us in supporting our students and faculty by attending and cheering them on.

Color Outside the Lines, from the Collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and His Family Foundation—This exhibition examines the ways artists have used color to question institutions, beliefs and expectations. Artists include PSU Art alumnus and former professor Isaka Shamsud-Din, Derrick Adams, Polly Apfelbaum, Antonius-Tín Bui, Iván Carmona, Lauren Hana Chai, Caitlin Cherry, Sam Gilliam, Hock E Aye Vi Edgar Heap of Birds, Ana María Hernando, Jenny Holzer, Salomón Huerta, Anish Kapoor, James Lavadour, Christopher Myers, Faith Ringgold, Andy Warhol and Stanley Whitney. Runs through December 7.

Deinum Prize Showcase: Lillyanne Pham: thương—Lillyanne Pham `24, winner of the College of the Arts’ 2023 Deinum Prize, presents “thương,” a cross-generational, multimedia storytelling project documenting the stories of Vietnamese Portlanders and the locations that have played a crucial role for the Vietnamese community. Runs through December 14.

To the nines: Documenting the creative independent fashion movement of Portland, Oregon, between 2000 and 2010, “Portland Fashion in the Aughts” is an exhibition capturing this pre-Instagram era through images, narratives and ephemera gathered by the community and curated by Marjorie Skinner, former fashion editor of the Portland Mercury. This exhibition is presented in conjunction with the new Sustainable Fashion minor program, as part of Portland Textile Month. Runs September 30 through October 31. See above.

Noon Concert: Yelling Choir—An ensemble reimagining voice, presence, gender and power. The choir, made up of femme, nonbinary and women musicians, is a vehicle of experimental relational technology, using play, somatic awareness and vocal practice.

Moving pictures: PSU School of Film hosts two film screenings this month, shining a cinematic light on the human experience of loneliness, the need for connection and community, and the meaning of home. On October 16, Film faculty member Dr. Patrick Terry presents Naoko Ogigami’s “Rent-a-Cat” (2012), courtesy of the Japan Foundation’s traveling film series. This quirky, melancholy and charming film relates the story of Sayoko, who facilitates encounters between people experiencing loneliness and the cats who bring them comfort.

Directed by Matt Peterson and Malek Rasamny, “Spaces of Exception” (2019) investigates and juxtaposes the struggles, communities and spaces of the American Indian reservation and the Palestinian refugee camp. Shot in Arizona, New Mexico, New York, South Dakota, Lebanon and the West Bank, “Spaces of Exception” is an attempt to understand the significance of the land—its memory and divisions—and the conditions needed for life, community and sovereignty. The screening on October 22 will be followed by a Q&A with the directors. See pages 3 and 4.

Attitude of gratitude: What is the role of a citizen artist? How do we imagine a way forward that includes all of us in a climate of division and polarization? How do we create together when there is no time left? These are questions posed in “Y/OURS: tending gratitude and other acts of (radical) subversion,” a new evening-length performance devised, performed, and designed by PSU students. Guided by theater maker as social justice advocate Damaris Webb and PSU Theater professor Solomon Weisbard, this cohort of student creators engage pressing issues that are relevant to our communities and shared humanity. Webb and Weisbard also collaborated on the first iteration of this concept with the production of “Y/OURS: the work of mutual aid in a (lonely) democracy” in Fall 2023. Runs November 20–24. Portland State Opera: The Gift of the Magi—Portland State Opera presents a lyrical interpretation of O. Henry’s heartwarming tale of a poor young couple, deeply in love, and the sacrifices they make for each other. “The Gift of the Magi” brings the true spirit of the holiday season into vibrant focus in this sumptuous contemporary chamber opera, with music by David Conte and libretto by Nicholas Giardini. Form and function: Continuing a decadelong tradition, students in the School of Architecture spent many days this summer designing and building a brand-new Cherry Hill stage for the Pickathon music festival. This year’s temporary structure was made from more than 1,000 pieces of dimensional lumber, which the students fashioned into 80 connected gates, forming a meandering pathway that encircled the stage. In keeping with the “diversion design-build” principles guiding this project, the building materials will be reused in local high school woodshops and carpentry programs. At the School of Architecture’s weekly Fridays@1 lectures, students, faculty and visiting practitioners discuss issues of architectural theory and practice, innovations in the field, and current projects such as the Cherry Hill stage.
