NEW WORK Portland Stage is committed to cultivating our region’s playwrights while introducing our audience to the creative process. We inspire, nurture, and launch plays that will delight audiences for decades to come by incubating new work.

Since its debut in 1990, the Little Festival of the Unexpected (LFU) has established a tradition of nurturing artists, invigorating audiences, and exploring new voices, visions, and forms of theater. Past LFU scripts include Almost, Maine (LFU 2003) and Papermaker (LFU 2014).

Actor, Tony nominee and playwright, John Cariani, whose Almost, Maine is one of the most produced plays by high schools and colleges, will return to Portland Stage this season with a new Made in Maine production, Not Quite Almost.

“Here’s to the new American dream.”

What is the American dream, and what happens when we see that dream slipping out of our reach? Do we change our perspective or grasp that disintegrating worldview more tightly, willing it to remain? In Edward Albee’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, the volatile relationship between George and Martha—a long-married, well-educated pair—consumes not only themselves but the youthful Honey and Nick, a couple who has joined them for a late-night after party. We witness the elite establishment desperately trying to hold onto their position of power as the next generation arrives and recognizes the systemic rot in the world of privilege they felt lucky to be joining. Watching this epic unfold, I’m struck by how much of its story mirrors the story of American society today. Portland Presents • Return to Index

Originally written in the ‘60s, when the fragility of the world was heightened by an existential Cold War, Albee spoke truth to his era. In 2024, with the world teetering equally off-kilter, he speaks truth to us. It’s the end of the world as we know it. But there is hope. The artists we have assembled for this production point to the ability of that American dream to change without crumbling to dust. When originally written in 1962, Albee firmly believed the play should be performed only by white actors, denying alternative casting choices for years. And yet in 2001, his perspective was changed when director Vera J. Katz from Howard University wrote him, making the case for this play to be performed by artists of color. Albee changed his perspective, and a classic play, long locked in its original form, morphed. The cast you see here today at Portland Stage includes a student who played George in that original Howard University production. He is now playing George at the proper age. Director Goldie Patrick was a student of Vera J. Katz when that original production was launched, and she has been speaking to Ms. Katz about this production during our rehearsal process. Perhaps we can learn from Ms. Katz’s example. Even when change seems unlikely, sometimes it only takes one bold person to help another person reevaluate their long-held perspective. And that can lead to more opportunities—to dream, to be, to achieve—for all. Here’s to the new American dream.

Edward Albee Edward Albee (1928-2016) was born on March 12, 1928, and began writing plays 30 years later. His plays include The Zoo Story (1958), The American Dream (1960), Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1961-62, Tony Award), Tiny Alice (1964), A Delicate Balance (1966, Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award), All Over (1971), Seascape (1974, Pulitzer Prize), The Lady From Dubuque (1977-78), The Man Who Had Three Arms (1981), Finding The Sun (1982), Marriage Play (1986-87), Three Tall Women (1991, Pulitzer Prize), Fragments (1993), The Play About The Baby (1997), The Goat, or Who Is Sylvia? PLAYNOTES PERSPECTIVES AN INTERVIEW WITH THE DIRECTOR: GOLDIE E. PATRICK

Edited for length and clarity by Kimmarie McCrann Kimmarie McCrann (KM): You saw the original production of Virginia Woolf at Howard University in 2001 with an all-Black cast. You described it as “one of the best productions you had ever seen.” What made it so great? Goldie E. Patrick (GEP): I think what made it particularly transformative for me

is that, because it was in a university setting, these are people that you see everyday. I looked up to Ashley [C. Turner, who played George then and plays him in the PS production]. He was a senior, and I was a freshman, and I was just like, “How does he know how to act already? Like, this is crazy.” The woman who played Martha was my professor, and so I saw her as a professor throughout the year, and had never seen her perform. The woman who played Honey was someone who I was familiar with, but she, in real life, was very shy, so I had never seen her perform. And so it was impactful to watch people who I felt like I knew, completely transformed to become these characters, and for it to be completely believable. The idea of them being written white never crossed my mind because they were the characters so fully. And so I was drawn into the authenticity that they brought to it. And I was hooked.

KM: How does it feel to direct the work now, all these years later? GEP: Really crazy. I have plenty of moments where I remind myself of that younger

version of me that saw it in awe and wondered, “How?” And so, even when it gets really complicated and difficult to conceptualize, as a director, I go back to that part of myself that says, “Yeah, this is why it’s this big of a task.” So it’s very humbling. It’s also really difficult. I think this is what the play is about, right? Truth versus illusion. We’re often encouraged to not say things are difficult, not say things are messy, not admit when we don’t know. And I appreciate how much this play and directing this play has really forced and also invited and allowed me to say the things I don’t know, and the text has so many layers that I’m like, “I need somebody else’s ears.” I need the whole team. So it’s a combination of things. I’m really grateful.

KM: You’ve incorporated the use of games in rehearsal exercises, i.e., playing Uno, dancing, and a script “scoreboard.” What’s your intention behind that? GEP: The text is so big, I think you can drown in it because it’s so big. And so I want to make it practical, and I want to make it tactical. I think the characters are so big that they become very easy to judge. And you go, “Oh, Nick is a narcissist. Oh, Honey is a ditz. Oh, Martha is a sex-crazed brat. Oh George, he’s a loser. He’s a psychotic loser.” You know, it’s easy to do that and and for me, the games narrow it down into finding ourselves in the risk of the characters, finding ourselves in the strategies of the

PLAYNOTES PERSPECTIVES characters, finding ourselves in the stakes of the character. And so the Uno game was about that. Everybody’s nice until the Uno cards come out, oh, yeah, or until the spades cards come out, or until dominoes comes out, right? Because there’s something about winning, and it goes way back for all of us. We don’t know what it is, but something about winning and something about losing. And I love actors that don’t want to lose. I love actors that, for their characters, make choices where the stakes are high enough, where they don’t want to lose. Nobody wants to lose, even if you lose gracefully. So that was the Uno. You see it even in the play, in terms of what we have as part of the set pieces [a chessboard]. George being a strategist and knowing he is the pawn. He is the pawn, you know, and it’s this question of “Can he win? Can he checkmate?” if he’s just a pawn, and so that’s what I’m clocking him in the actual production. And then the scoreboard part is a visual representation of “Are you winning or losing in this, and do you want to win?” KM: How do you think this story is relevant to a 2025 audience? GEP: It’s crazy relevant. It’s scary. It’s relevant because it’s a conversation about truth and illusion. And we currently live in a time where every generation is being seduced by illusion in some way, and most of it is political, right? And when I say political, I just don’t just mean government. There’s something political about social media. You get to tell the story of yourself on social media: I’m great. Life is grand. You get to look a certain way. Politically, we’re watching this conversation that’s in the play about power and prestige and moving up is an illusion, and we’re watching politicians today take advantage of what it appears to be. We’re not asking the questions like George. Questions of, has anybody thought about this? What does that mean if we all have to look the same? What does that mean if citizenship has to look the same in this country? We’re not allowed to talk out about this. We’re not allowed to protest this. When do we challenge that? I think those are big ideas, but it’s something about the play, a lot of the dialogue and a lot of the conversations in the play that are so relevant. So I hope we sit in the discomfort of how much we’re pretending still in 2025, and what we’re bold enough and willing enough to say.

WHO’S AFRAID OF 1962? By Larsen Nichols

One of the most significant movements that happened over the course of the 1950s and 1960s in the United States was the Civil Rights Movement, which campaigned for racial equality for Black Americans. The Civil Rights Movement included boycotts, massive protests and rallies, and changes to US legislation. In 1954, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of equal rights in the landmark Brown v. Board of Education case, declaring that statesanctioned racial segregation of public schools was a violation of the Fourteenth Amendment. A year and a half later, Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat to a white man in a racially segregated bus in Montgomery, Alabama. She was arrested for her refusal and became “the mother of the modern-day civil rights movement.” Baptist minister Martin Luther King, Jr. led the Montgomery Bus Boycott with Rosa Parks and other activists, which lasted 381 days. The next year, President Eisenhower signed the Civil Rights Act of 1957, which allowed federal prosecution of anyone who tried to prevent a US citizen from voting. On February 1, 1960, four Black college students took a stand when they refused to give up their seats without being served at Woolworth’s lunch counter in Greensboro, North Carolina. The sit-in gained national media attention and sparked a series of peaceful sit-ins and demonstrations that spread to 55 cities in 13 states. In response to the success of the movement, dining facilities in the South were being integrated by the summer of 1960. University intellectuals like Martha, George, Nick, and Honey would’ve been highly aware of and possibly involved in such movements, especially in the southern state of Virginia.

HOWARD, ALBEE, AND AN ALL-BLACK WHO’S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF? By Kimmarie McCrann

In 2001, a production of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? with an allBlack cast was performed for the first time at Howard University, under the direction of theater arts professor Vera J. Katz. Katz knew that she wanted to push boundaries and direct the first all-Black production of Virginia Woolf with a cast of strong student actors and professors at a Historically Black College and University (HBCU) like Howard. And Katz knew that in order to direct such a production, there would be some necessary script changes. So, she wrote out a letter long-hand to playwright Edward Albee himself and sent it to his agent, explaining her dilemma. Vera’s own husband said to her on the matter, “You’ll never hear from him.” Much to the Katzes’ pleasant surprise, Albee responded to Vera’s request by calling her directly and excitedly agreed to make several script changes to allow the production to materialize. The alterations that Albee mulled on and sent to Katz included changing the mentions of the “blue-eyed child” to the “dark-dusky child.” Additionally, Albee changed the names of several of the prestigious universities mentioned in the script, like MIT and UCLA, to HBCUs such as Howard University and the Tuskegee Institute. Albee also expressed to Katz his desire to visit Howard University and speak with the young actors. A visit was arranged, and Albee took the trip from New York to Washington, DC. Katz later described the encounter, “When he arrived, he insisted on shaking every actor’s hand and gave a brilliant lecture about the play. He was very knowledgeable of persons the dormitories and buildings were named for….For me, he seemed to want to expand his awareness of the Black experience during this visit.” Ashley C. Turner, the actor who is currently playing George in Portland Stage’s production, is actually the same person who played the role when he was a senior student at Howard University in 2001! ARTISTIC & PRODUCTION BIOS Anita Stewart** (Scenic Designer) has worked as a set and costume designer at leading theaters across the country, including the Guthrie, Seattle Rep, Canadian Opera Company, Minnesota Opera, A.R.T., Steppenwolf, Hartford Stage, Dallas Theater Center, Long Wharf Theatre, New York Theatre Workshop, Boise Contemporary Theater, New Jersey Shakespeare, and Portland Stage. Anita’s desire to play a meaningful role as an artist in a specific community brought her to Portland Stage as Artistic Director, a company for which she had previously done significant freelance design. Anita holds an MFA in Design from the Yale School of Drama. Patrice Trower (Costume Designer) is the costume shop manager at Indiana Repertory Theatre in Indianapolis. She has previously costume designed The Play That Goes Wrong here at Portland Stage. Patrice is excited to be designing Virginia Woolf and returning to Portland Stage. John D. Alexander (Lighting Designer) Off-Broadway: Lambs 2 Slaughter (Cherry Lane Theatre) and Migration: Reflections on Jacob Lawrence (New Victory Theater). Myles has worked with such diverse theaters as the Hangar Theatre, Theatre By The Sea, The Freeport Shakespeare Festival, Maine State Music Theatre, The Theater at Monmouth, Arden Theatre Company, Baltimore Shakespeare Festival, Everyman Theatre, Rep Stage, Horse Cave Theatre, New Stage Theatre, Round House Theatre, Source Theatre Company, Washington Stage Guild, Washington Jewish Theatre, Asolo Theatre Company, Westport Country Playhouse, and the YALE Summer Cabaret. Jenn Haltman (Casting Director) (she/her) is a freelance theatre, film, and new media casting director and she’s delighted to be returning for her seventh season.
