With a season of six Mainstage Shows and a Holiday Show, Portland Stage brings a wide range of performances to Maine. Every Mainstage show is handcrafted in our historic building in the Portland Arts District. Over one season, Portland Stage creates over two hundred live performances and serves 50,000 people from around the state and beyond.

EDUCATION
Education is central to Portland Stage’s mission. Vital education programs are offered in schools for students from pre-K through high school, and to children ages 4-18 through classes in our Susie Konkel Theater for Kids storefront space. Portland Stage’s Education Programs provide over 14,000 student experiences each year. PLAY ME A STORY: LIVING ROOM SERIES presented by Portland Stage Theater for Kids allows participants to enjoy dramatic readings of picture books, then participate in an interactive acting workshop with professional theater artists.

Portland Stage is known for its role in cultivating new voices in theater and for creating a significant body of theatrical work that has gone on to success beyond our stage. By incubating new work and supporting writers, Portland Stage has established Maine as a place to launch original and compelling plays. Since its debut in 1990, the Little Festival of the Unexpected (LFU) has established a tradition of nurturing artists, invigorating audiences, and exploring new voices, visions, and forms of theater. Past LFU scripts include Almost, Maine (LFU 2003) and Papermaker (LFU 2014).
Playwright Greg Lam, 2020 Clauder Competition Grand Prize Winner for his play, Last Ship to Proxima Centauri, soon to be a Portland Stage Mainstage production. Greg’s play was selected to be a part of the 2021 Little Festival of the Unexpected, where it was performed virtually over Zoom for audiences.

“I came to Sabina with my head and I left with my heart.” Sabina is a story that starts in the head and travels straight to your heart. Based on the real-life story of Sabina Spielrein, a Russian Jew and a catatonic patient, we follow this amazing woman through her life’s journey and discover a perspective on her history that has long been twisted and left to the shadows. Emerging from the cocoon of mental illness, Spielrein soars high as she shares theories with two giants of her age, Drs. Carl Jung and Sigmund Freud. 68 - Return to Index - Portland Presents
What draws me to this musical retelling of a piece of intellectual history is the humanization of a person with a mental illness coupled with the emotional intelligence of the Sabina that the creative team has crafted. She is smart, funny, and determined. She is not afraid to look into the future and embrace what it will be. Is this the beginning or is this the end? Can we carry her message and change the world? Sabina gives me hope for our future. Her story is eerily resonant in our world of today. As we bear witness to atrocities in Ukraine, as we contend with an epidemic of mental illness in young people, or confront stories of abuse, our ability to face the world with love, grace, and compassion is what will see us through. There is hope. This new musical has been a tremendous undertaking for Portland Stage. I would like to thank a group of individuals who believed in this piece and invested in this production. Here’s to a dream that has finally come true.

WILLY HOLTZMAN, PLAYWRIGHT Willy Holtzman’s The Morini Strad, Inside Out, and The Real McGonagall received full productions at Portland Stage Company. Sabina and The First Mrs. Rochester were developed at the Little Festival of the Unexpected. New York productions include The Morini Strad, Sabina, Something You Did, Bovver Boys (Primary Stages); Inside Out (Theatre for a New Audience); San Antonio Sunset, The Last Temptation of Joe Hill, The Closer (The Working Theater). LOUISE BEACH, COMPOSER
Louise Beach writes music for the concert stage as well as for the theater, and her chamber works are widely performed. She was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship for her musical adaptation of Sabina and won the National Art Song Competition for her Songs of Dusk. With a Master’s in Composition from Purchase Conservatory, she was a composer in the New Dramatists Composer-Librettist Studio and a long-time member of the Advanced Class of the BMI-Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop, where Sabina was developed in a talented group of writers that included the creators of Avenue Q, Book of Mormon, and Next to Normal.

DARRAH CLOUD, LYRICIST
Darrah Cloud’s full-length play, Turning, premiered in March 2020 at Centenary Stage in NJ. Our Suburb premiered at Theater J in Washington, DC, in 2014. Joan the Girl of Arc premiered at Cincinnati Playhouse in January 2014, then toured. Other plays produced in New York, Europe, and across the US include What’s Bugging Greg?, The Stick Wife, The Mud Angel, Dream House, Braille Garden, and The Sirens. Her produced musicals, written with composer Kim D. Sherman, include Heartland (Madison Repertory Theatre, The Majestic Theatre in Dallas, TheatreWorks Palo Alto). The Boxcar Children (TheaterWorks USA, tour), Honor Song for Crazy Horse (TheaterWorks Palo Alto), and the stage adaptation of Willa Cather’s O Pioneers!, which has received over 100 productions in the United States and was filmed starring Mary McDonnell for American Playhouse. She has won numerous awards, including the Macy’s Prize for Theatre for Young Audiences, an NEA, and a Rockefeller. She has had over 10 movies-of-the-week produced on CBS and NBC, is a proud alum of the Iowa Writer’s Workshop and New Dramatists, and co-directs Howl Playwrights in Rhinebeck, NY. She is the Town Supervisor of Pine Plains, NY.

DANILO GAMBINI, CO-DIRECTOR
Danilo Gambini is a New York-based director, originally from São Paulo, Brazil. Directing credits include Ni Mi Madre at Rattlestick Playwrights Theater (NYT Critic’s Pick); the musicals Thebes, Fun Home, and The Who’s Tommy; Shakespeare’s The Tempest; Denis O’Hare and Lisa Peterson’s An Iliad; and Noah Diaz’s Rock Egg Spoon. As the Co-Artistic Director of the Yale Summer Cabaret, he directed Euripides’s Bakkhai, and adapted and directed the musical The Swallow and the Tomcat from the Brazilian children’s book by Jorge Amado. Other credits include Agreste (Drylands), Truck (Yale Cabaret); Opera: Don Giovanni, Ariadne auf Naxos, Eugene Onegin (Theatro São Pedro). He has assisted directors including Robert Woodruff, Scott Ellis, Laurie Woolery, Fernando Meirelles, Iacov Hillel, and Candace Evans. He is currently the Directing Fellow at Rattlestick Playwrights Theater and part of the 2021-22 Roundabout Directors Group. Danilo holds an MFA in Directing from Yale School of Drama, a BFA in Film and Television (Curso Superior do Audiovisual) and an artist diploma as an actor from the School of Dramatic Art (Escola de Arte Dramática - EAD), both from the University of São Paulo. danilogambini.com

ARTISTIC & PRODUCTION BIOGRAPHIES Bradley Vieth (Musical Director) is thrilled to be working with the writers of Sabina after 15 years. He was on the musical theater faculty of Florida Southern College for the past three years, teaching singing and acting. Brad led several national and international tours as conductor, and he can be heard on the original cast albums of Shout! The Mod Musical, First Lady Suite, and Wings. Brad enjoys house renovation and cooking in his spare time, and is grateful to have this opportunity at Portland Stage. Anita Stewart (Scenic Designer) has worked as a set and costume designer at leading theaters across the country, including the Guthrie, Seattle Rep, Canadian Opera Company, Minnesota Opera, A.R.T., Steppenwolf, Hartford Stage, Dallas Theater Center, Long Wharf Theatre, New York Theatre Workshop, Boise Contemporary Theater, New Jersey Shakespeare, and Portland Stage. Anita’s desire to play a meaningful role as an artist in a specific community brought her to Portland Stage as Artistic Director, a company for which she had previously done significant freelance design. Anita holds an MFA in design from the Yale School of Drama. Fabian Fidel Aguilar (Costume Designer) attended the Yale School of Drama for his MFA and Boston University (BFA) to pursue theatrical costume design. MUSICIAN BIOGRAPHIES Sam Schuth (Viola) is a teacher living in Biddeford, Maine. His mission as a performer is to make a positive impact on his local community through live performance, connecting with the audience, and fostering their love of music and music-making. Sam studied violin with Dr. Robert Lehmann at the University of Southern Maine, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in violin performance. While at USM, Sam was concertmaster of the Southern Maine Symphony Orchestra and was featured as a soloist in Vivaldi’s Four Seasons. He also toured the state of Maine with both the USM String Quartet and the USM String Quintet. Sam has performed with orchestras including the Bangor Symphony, the Portland Ballet, and Maine Music Society. He has also worked with Vigorous Tenderness, Portland Bach Experience, and the Back Cove Contemporary Music Festival. Sam also has extensive musical theater experience and has worked with Maine State Music Theatre, The Good Theater, Portland Players, and more. Sam teaches at his home studio in Biddeford, and at 317 Main Community Music Center in Yarmouth. Meagan McIntyre (Violin 1) From Portland, Maine, she attended the New England Conservatory of Music Preparatory School and went on to study violin performance at Indiana University Bloomington. She served on the faculty at the Portland Conservatory of Music and was a visiting instructor at the Institute of Art Education in Porto Alegre, Brazil. She performs throughout Maine with a variety of ensembles and is a member of Amarantos String Quartet. Anna Pearlman (Violin 2) is a New England-based artist currently residing in the Portland area, she is Concertmaster of the Southern Maine Symphony Orchestra and regularly plays both violin and viola in the Portsmouth Symphony. She has performed in musicals, weddings, and events throughout New England, including Maine Jewish Museum’s first Hall of Fame

Kathleen McNerney (Oboe/English Horn) has been hailed by critics for her “rich, full-bodied tone” and “attention to the natural and enticing timbre of the instrument.” She is co-founder and Artistic Director of critically acclaimed VentiCordi Chamber Music, now entering its 14th concert season. VentiCordi’s innovative programming has been hailed in the press, with one writer exclaiming, ”My vote for the most interesting chamber music ensemble in recent years in Maine goes to VentiCordi.” Kathleen has performed with many musical organizations from coast to coast. Since relocating to Maine, she has performed with the Portland Symphony, Bay Chamber Concerts, Portland String Quartet, Maine Music Society, and many more organizations. MUSICIAN BIOGRAPHIES prolific and varied playing career, performing in orchestras, opera, ballet, movie soundtracks, and musical theater. She was oboist for two woodwind quintets, Imbroglio and Calico Winds, and recorded with both groups. Her recording with Calico Winds was praised in the Los Angeles Times as “proceeds from Bach to Zappa…projecting solid musical values all the way…crossed all the style lines and gotten away with it.” Kathleen currently teaches oboe at Bowdoin and Bates Colleges and the Portland Conservatory of Music. Barbara Paschke (Cello) is a longtime member of the Portland Symphony Orchestra. She is also an active member of Maine Synthesis, a group dedicated to bringing music and other forms of art to people in smaller settings. Ms. Paschke is a dedicated teacher of cello and still maintains a studio in Concord, MA. She is looking forward to opening a private lesson studio in Freeport this summer. David Paschke (Cello) moved to Maine with his cellist partner Barbara just shy of four years ago from Massachusetts, where he was formerly principal cellist of the New England Philharmonic and the Concord Orchestra. He graduated with a degree in ‘cello performance from Boston University where he was a student of George Neikrug. He has been a member of the cello section in the Portland Symphony for many years and is enjoying the much shorter commute to Portland from Poland! In addition to playing in the Portland Symphony, he owns a company devoted to the rebuilding and modification of Leitz and Zeiss research microscopes. He also enjoys bird watching and reading English literature.

WHO WAS SABINA SPIELREIN? By Macey Downs and Meredith G. Healy
Sabina Spielrein (November 7, 1885-August 1942) was a Russian physician and psychoanalyst. She was the eldest of five children, and after the death of her sister Emilia, she experienced severe mental health issues which resulted in hospitalization. In August 1904, she began inpatient treatment with Dr. Carl Jung at the Burghölzli Hospital in Zürich, Switzerland. Spielrein improved rapidly and was able to apply for medical school in October of that year. From 1905 to 1911, she attended medical school at the University of Zürich where her main focus was psychiatry. Spielrein studied psychoanalysis with Jung and Eugen Bleuler (the director of the Burghölzli Hospital), and spent time with Freud. Her dissertation “On the Psychological Content of a Case of Schizophrenia” (1911) was the first published by a woman. Spielrein’s innovative work inspired both Freud and Jung during her life and after her death. She was respected by these famous psychoanalysts, other colleagues, and the public throughout her career as a leading scholar of the time. Yet soon after she was brutally murdered during the Holocaust in 1942, her contributions were widely forgotten, leaving her to be remembered solely as the patient, muse, and mistress of Jung. In 2014, over 100 years after she started her career as a psychoanalyst, the first volume of her complete writings was published in Brazil, garnering more of the public recognition and respect that her work deserves.

SETTING THE SCENE: THE BURGHÖLZLI HOSPITAL By Meredith G. Healy
In 1860, Wilhelm Griesenger, a German psychiatrist and neurologist, began to work towards opening an institution that would provide humane care for people with mental health issues. The hospital opened in 1870. The first three hospital directors believed that mental illness could be attributed solely to biological factors, and focused on brain pathology and physiology. The fourth director, Auguste Forel, brought a new approach that combined the biological focus of German psychiatry and the emotional processes of France’s dynamic psychiatry. This shift in thought brought the clinic international attention and recognition. Eugen Bleuler was the director of the Burghölzli from 1898 to 1927. During his tenure, both Carl Jung and Ludwig Binswanger worked at the hospital, and Sabina Spielrein was treated as a patient before enrolling in medical school. Under Bleuler, the hospital became the first clinic to utilize and test Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytic theories and therapeutic methods. In his role as director, Bleuler is also remembered for working against institutionalization and advocating for early discharge, and is thus viewed as one of the early adopters of the community psychology movement.

Directing and Dramaturgy Apprentice Meredith G. Healy spoke with writing team Willy Holtzman (book), Louise Beach (music), and Darrah Cloud (lyrics) and directors Danilo Gambini and Daniella Topol about Sabina. Meredith G. Healy (MGH): Can you talk about your experience as co-writers and how exactly you have worked together? Darrah Cloud: I have the perfect answer—we sail in circles! We come up with ideas and then we throw them out, or we keep part of it. Willy has a say, and Louise has a say, and I have a say, and we end up somewhere. Louise Beach: It’s a fluid process, and it can be messy and all over the place and also wonderful. When we’re inspired with an idea, we just go towards a vision together and help all the pieces get there. Yes, it’s sailing in circles, but then the wind fills the sails and off we go! Willy Holtzman: With Sabina we had a historical figure, and the play’s version of history, as a starting point for structure. As we discovered our version of the story, we were able to throw out any piece of the play that didn’t apply. I would also say that, going back to the original play and our experience with the musical, there’s always been a mystical side to this experience and to this journey. You get to a point with Sabina where it feels like she’s speaking to you. You’re almost a conduit for her lost story, and you have to honor that.

MGH: Is there something in particular that drew you into this story? Daniella Topol: There are many aspects of the piece that I find quite compelling, but I am most captivated by Sabina herself. I am pulled into the vulnerability of this Jewish woman who is traumatized by the death of her sister and then has the courage to emerge and find this intimacy with Jung. And in spite of being betrayed, she finds the herculean strength to keep going and create a body of work, become a mother, and return to Russia in spite of the trauma that awaits her. If only we all had her strength and courage! MGH: What are you hoping audiences will take away from the production? Danilo Gambini: That love is bigger than all of this that we understand as reality. It is bigger than our understanding of time, our perception of space, and even our experience of romance. It is sublime—and it is available to all of us.
