With a season of six Mainstage Shows and a Holiday Show, Portland Stage brings a wide range of performances to Maine. Every Mainstage show is handcrafted in our historic building in the Portland Arts District. Over one season, Portland Stage creates over two hundred live performances and serves 50,000 people from around the state and beyond.

EDUCATION
Education is central to Portland Stage’s mission. Vital education programs are offered in schools for students from pre-K through high school, and to children ages 4-18 through classes in our Susie Konkel Theater for Kids storefront space. Portland Stage’s Education Programs provide over 14,000 student experiences each year. PLAY ME A STORY: LIVING ROOM SERIES presented by Portland Stage Theater for Kids allows participants to enjoy dramatic readings of picture books, then participate in an interactive acting workshop with professional theater artists.

Portland Stage is known for its role in cultivating new voices in theater and for creating a significant body of theatrical work that has gone on to success beyond our stage. By incubating new work and supporting writers, Portland Stage has established Maine as a place to launch original and compelling plays. Since its debut in 1990, the Little Festival of the Unexpected (LFU) has established a tradition of nurturing artists, invigorating audiences, and exploring new voices, visions, and forms of theater. Past LFU scripts include Almost, Maine (LFU 2003) and Papermaker (LFU 2014).
Playwright Greg Lam, 2020 Clauder Competition Grand Prize Winner for his play, Last Ship to Proxima Centauri, soon to be a Portland Stage Mainstage production. Greg’s play was selected to be a part of the 2021 Little Festival of the Unexpected, where it was performed virtually over Zoom for audiences.

School-Time Performances Energize and engage your students with the performing arts and artists through onstage school-time matinees, digital offerings and offstage theater activities. Cultivating Curiosity Cultivating Curiosity helps grow young people’s love of books by pairing reading opportunities with School-Time Performances, by providing each child who attends the performance a free book born from its title. “. . .how do we find a way to make the world we have better for everyone?”
We have a history of creating time capsules for others to find. Burying them in the ground or shooting them off into space as references to ourselves. In Last Ship to Proxima Centauri, Greg Lam’s Clauder competition play asks us to imagine what might happen if we hurtled ourselves into space. What might we find at the end of our journey and how might we be invited in? Last Ship to Proxima Centauri takes us thousands of years into our future to join the inhabitants of a spaceship from Seattle, Washington, 2000 years into a journey to reach a new home. It is a delight to see the remnants of modern culture that Greg has decided would be our legacy—they are as magnificent, mundane, and comical as the Tesla now drifting off into space is a testament to Elon Musk’s (and by extension our) technical prowess. As much as this play can be viewed as a fun blast from the past to the future, Greg is also thinking about the “norms” of our present day, from language to governments, and from entertainment to guns. Greg creates an altered lens through which we view the modern world, and in doing so, he gives us a different way to think. In Greg’s future,

Americans are the ones who arrive late. We are the ones who are refugees and want access. He asks us to imagine what we might say, what we might do, how we might feel. And by positioning us as the “outsider,” he makes us think about the thousands of refugees who make treacherous journeys to our borders today. How would we handle meeting people from our past? How would they handle us? If a group of soldiers from the Civil War appeared off the coast of Maine asking to disembark on our shores, how would we greet them? When refugees make a year-long trek to our shores looking for safety and survival now, what do we do? At this moment, as thousands of Ukrainians find their world upended by a political battle for turf, I think the question for us all is: how do we find a way to make the world we have better for everyone? I want to give a shout-out to the Clauder Competition that has helped to make this play possible. Now in its 42nd year, this blind submission competition offers writers from the New England area the opportunity to have their scripts considered. We inspire writers by guaranteeing at least two readers’ reviews and an individualized response back to every writer. We nurture the highest-ranking plays through weeklong workshops with actors and directors during the Little Festival of the Unexpected, and we launch the grand prize winner through a full production in a two-year cycle. Here’s to our collective future. I hope that we can inspire, nurture, and launch not only many more writers, but also all of us to build a future that looks different from our past and present.

GREG LAM, PLAYWRIGHT
Greg Lam is a playwright, screenwriter, podcaster, and board game designer who now lives in the Bay Area. This production is his first full-length play produced in New England. He is the co-founder of the Asian-American Playwright Collective and a member of the Pulp Stage Writer’s Room and the Pear Theatre’s Playwright Guild. He is the co-creator of the Boston Podcast Players podcast (bostonpodcastplayers.com), Boston’s virtual podcast stage for new works by local playwrights. He tends to write full-length epics which mix humor with grinding moral dilemmas, often using science fiction as a backdrop; nimble ten-minute comic romps; and one-minute plays that are howls of utter despair. KEVIN R. FREE, DIRECTOR
Kevin R. Free is over the moon to return to Portland Stage to direct Last Ship to Proxima Centauri. He is a multidisciplinary artist whose work as an actor, writer, director, and producer has been showcased and developed in many places, including FringeNYC; National Black Theatre; The New Black Fest; The Moth Radio Hour; Project Y Theatre; Flux Theatre Ensemble; the Queerly Festival; and The Fire This Time Festival, where he served as Producing Artistic Director for five years, winning an Obie for his work in 2015. He is also an accomplished voice actor, having voiced over 350 audiobooks and creating the voice of Kevin from Desert Bluffs on the popular podcast Welcome to Night Vale. Recent directing credits include The Last Five Years, Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill, and Where We Stand, all at Portland Stage; Wendy and the Neckbeards at Colby College; Marcus; or the Secret of Sweet at UNLV; and Pipeline at Mile Square Theatre, where he is now the Artistic Director. TRANSLATOR BIOGRAPHIES Livian Yeh (Mandarin Translator) is a writer and translator based in San Francisco, CA. Her writing has appeared in StarTrek.com, The Bold Italic, Sampan newspaper, and HowlRound, among other publications. Her plays have been workshopped at Boston Playwrights’ Theatre and Pan Asian Repertory Theatre in New York. Born in the US and raised in Taiwan, she studied Dramatic Writing at New York University and playwriting at Boston University. Jecenia Isis Figueroa (Spanish Translator) s a Puerto Rican playwright, poet, and author born in Boston, MA. Since 2014, she has had her works, Dirty Laundry and Marriage, Mentiras & Mantras staged with Escena Latina Teatro (ELT), TC Squared Theatre Company (TC2), and Boston Podcast Players. In 2015, she debuted a bilingual collection of poetry entitled, La Tertulia Inicial. She has also been a member of the Company One Theatre family since 2016. Jecenia has been published in Boston Poetry Magazine, as a co-author for 20 Beautiful Women: Volume 3, and as a contributor for the anthology, Basta: 100+ Latinas against Gender Violence. She was most recently named Playwright-In-Residence for ELT, the only Spanish-language theater company in Boston. Kayodè Soyemi (Yoruba Translator) is a Nigerian-American actor and multifaceted artist from Atlanta, GA. In addition to his work as an actor, Kayodè has also worked as a playwright and editor. Most recently, part one of his play Potter’s Exhibition, about the America’s first Black celebrity magician, premiered at Yale Cabaret. His play I AM NOT YOUR TEACHER was recently published and has been produced at Yale Cabaret, Actors Theatre of Louisville, New World Theatre and Shaking the Tree. As an editor, Kayodè recently worked with Noro Otitigbe on the multi-genre fiction, ideations. Kayodè is glad to bring Yoruba, the language of his people, to life in Last Ship. She holds an MFA in Acting from Brown University/Trinity Repertory where she received the David Wickham Playwriting Award. After graduating, Trinity Repertory awarded Octavia with the Margo Skinner Memorial Fellowship for 2018. Her original short film Lolita Express recently debuted at the NYC Indie Theatre Film Festival (March 2021). Octavia uses theater and film to explore women’s relationships to their bodies. She is particularly interested in women of color and their sexual agency. Her work disrupts hierarchy, racism, and misogyny, and challenges conventional beauty standards.

ARTISTIC & PRODUCTION BIOGRAPHIES Germán Cárdenas-Alaminos (Scenic Designer) is a part-time faculty member at the Theater and Dance Department at Bowdoin College. First season at PSC. Recent designs in Maine: Sofonisba and Age of Bees at TAM; The Wolves, Cows of War, and Henry VI, Part 2 at Bowdoin College. Past credits include: A Little Night Music, Ubu Roi, The Laramie Project, The Producers, Nine, Metamorphoses, Reasons to be Pretty, These seven sicknesses, She Kills Monsters, and Once on This Island. He has also worked for Passage Theatre, Cherry Lane, and Claire Tow Theater (Lincoln Center) in NY. MFA, Yale, 2010. So thankful, grateful, and excited to be part of this project. Haydee Zelideth (Costume Designer) believes that clothes are a powerful tool of one’s own personal statement. In their own way they carry on public conversations with others and they share stories about who we are, who we are not, and who we wish to be. They are a means of exploring how to manipulate our perception of the human body and mind, in how our appearance (both physical and in what we wear) inform how the world chooses to engage or disengage with us, and how these images can open up perceptions of race, class, socioeconomic status, and more—all of which are conversations that most interest her. She is a Mexican American that grew up on both sides of the border. These experiences inform her point of view and how she approaches her work as a storyteller, giving depth, dimension, and color to the specificities of someone’s life. Historically, Myles has worked with such diverse theaters as the Hangar Theatre, Theatre By The Sea, The Freeport Shakespeare Festival, Maine State Music Theatre, The Theater at Monmouth, Arden Theatre Company, Baltimore Shakespeare Festival, Everyman Theatre, Rep Stage, Horse Cave Theatre, New Stage Theatre, Round House Theatre, Source Theatre Company, Washington Stage Guild, Washington Jewish Theatre, Asolo Theatre Company, Westport Country Playhouse, and the Yale Summer Cabaret. In his free time, Myles is a weaver and is currently enjoying restoring a 100-year-old loom. Myles is a proud member of Actors’ Equity Association. Jenn Haltman (Casting Director) (she/her) is a freelance theater, film, and new media casting director and is thrilled to be returning for her fourth season with Portland Stage. SCIENCE FICTION FOR SOCIAL CHANGE By Meredith G. Healy
The genre of science fiction has impacted generations of viewers. Since Star Trek: The Original Series (TOS) premiered in 1966, it has commented upon contemporary social, and social justice, issues. Many episodes use the premise of space travel and the future to explore deeper themes, and to make those themes more palatable to the audience. There are numerous episodes in TOS in which, instead of talking overtly about anti-war sentiments, the team found themselves on an alien planet where unfamiliar species use violence as a means to solve disputes. Other themes that were explored in a similar manner include sexuality, abortion, and racism. The effects of this in pop culture and media are far-reaching and influential. Mae Jemison, the first Black woman in space, grew up watching Nichelle Nichols as Lieutenant Nyota Uhura in Star Trek, and Nichols worked directly with NASA to recruit women and marginalized people to work for the space agency. In 2010, Sigma Xi, a national collegiate honor society that is devoted to science and engineering, asked members a simple question: “Did science fiction influence you?” The resounding answer was yes!

THE REAL PROXIMA CENTAURI By Macey Downs
Proxima Centauri b (also called Proxima b) is a real exoplanet (a planet outside of our solar system) that scientists discovered on August 24, 2016. Proxima b orbits the red dwarf star (the smallest and coolest kind of star) Proxima Centauri, which is part of the triple star system Alpha Centauri. Proxima b is in its star’s “habitable zone,” meaning it orbits at a distance that allows for comfortable temperatures and the possibility for liquid water— both necessary for supporting life from Earth. Proxima b’s proximity to Earth has made it an exoplanet of special interest to scientists. At 4.2 light-years away, it is one of the two closest exoplanets to our solar system. Proxima b is also Earth-like in size, with a mass of 1.17 Earth masses. Because of its closeness to its star, and the dwarfed size of its star, it only takes Proxima b 11.2 Earth-days to revolve around Proxima Centauri. Time would move differently on Proxima b than it does on Earth, so inhabitants would either continue to conceptualize years with Earth-time and make time irrelevant to the orbiting of the planet, or would reconceptualize what a year is altogether. Many of the things we take for granted on Earth would be just different enough on Proxima b that extreme adaptation would be at the core of humans’ survival. Descendents of the first inhabitants who would be born on the planet would constantly need to recalibrate: both in terms of their physical bodies, and in terms of human culture and society, which developed in communication with Earth’s relationship to our Sun, Moon, and position in the universe.

INTERVIEW WITH THE PLAYWRIGHT By Macey Downs
Directing and Dramaturgy Apprentice Macey Downs spoke with playwright Greg Lam about the creation of Last Ship to Proxima Centauri.
Macey Downs (MD): Could you talk about your journey with the play, from submitting it to the Clauder Competition to now being in rehearsals for a full-length production? Greg Lam (GL): First I developed it as part of the Boston theater Company One. When I brought the play to them, it was probably half of the first act and the general idea of the play. Later on I got a few readings, including a reading here at Portland Stage as part of the Little Festival of the Unexpected. The major component that has changed at Portland Stage is that they commissioned full translations of the non-English text. There are sections of the play that have characters speaking different languages. Previously, I had written that the characters would start speaking the language and then designate a shift so that the audience understands that they’re speaking a different language while hearing them speaking English. Portland Stage was interested in going with the more ambitious option of translating everything, and there will be supertitles over the stage with almost all of the translations. MD: Do you see a world in which one day this play would be presented in front of a multilingual audience, and different people would walk away with different experiences? GL: The dream version of sitting in the crowd for this play is having some people who speak Mandarin Chinese and some people who speak Spanish, and then a joke or a reference comes by in Chinese or Spanish and the people who understand that just laugh out loud, and everyone else has to look at them and say to themselves “What are they getting?” I am Chinese American, but I don’t speak much Chinese at all. I myself am not able to understand the thing I’m writing!

Macey Downs (MD): You’ve worked with Portland Stage a lot! Would you say that your approach/style as a director has changed since you first started working at this theater? Kevin R. Free (KRF): My style has changed, but changed in a way that’s more about what I’ve always set out to do. Putting people first, leading with compassion, and taking into account every person’s humanity was really helpful coming into this experience. Also leading with transparency is important to me, too. I like for everybody to have input about what we’re doing. People can express themselves and then we’ll just have a discussion about it. MD: Is there a specific scene, moment, or idea from the play that you are most excited for people to see or experience? KRF: I’ve never seen a play happen on a spaceship before, so I’m just excited about that. There are a few times at the beginning of the play that I think, “Oh! That’s a good picture. Look at that!” It’s partly because there’s just no space—it’s a tiny little spaceship— and so sometimes when they hit on a picture that I guided them to, they make these little tableaus that they don’t even know that they’re making that, to me, look like iconic spaceship tableaus. There are moments when they’re looking outside the windows of the spaceship that just seem really real to me, I love that as well. MD: Why is it important to do this play here, in Maine, and now in 2022? KRF: The thing I should really just say is: why not? Why shouldn’t we produce this play? It’s a good play! It’s exciting and it presents issues in a really interesting way without making a point, without being didactic, without saying, “This is how it needs to be,” without instructing us on how to live our lives. It just says: “This is the thing. This is it. Here it is.” And that’s why I love it. Portland Presents - Return to Index - 95
