With a season of six Mainstage Shows and a Holiday Show, Portland Stage brings a wide range of performances to Maine. Every Mainstage show is handcrafted in our historic building in the Portland Arts District. Over one season, Portland Stage creates over two hundred live performances and serves 50,000 people from around the state and beyond.

Education is central to Portland Stage’s mission. Vital education programs are offered in schools for students from pre-K through high school, and to children ages 4-18 through classes in our Susie Konkel Theater for Kids storefront space. Portland Stage’s Education Programs provide over 14,000 student experiences each year. PLAY ME A STORY: LIVING ROOM SERIES presented by Portland Stage Theater for Kids allows participants to enjoy dramatic readings of picture books, then participate in an interactive acting workshop with professional theater artists.

Portland Stage is known for its role in cultivating new voices in theater and for creating a significant body of theatrical work that has gone on to success beyond our stage. By incubating new work and supporting writers, Portland Stage has established Maine as a place to launch original and compelling plays. Since its debut in 1990, the Little Festival of the Unexpected (LFU) has established a tradition of nurturing artists, invigorating audiences, and exploring new voices, visions, and forms of theater. Past LFU scripts include Almost, Maine (LFU 2003) and Papermaker (LFU 2014).
Playwright Greg Lam, 2020 Clauder Competition Grand Prize Winner for his play, Last Ship to Proxima Centauri, soon to be a Portland Stage Mainstage production. Greg’s play was selected to be a part of the 2021 Little Festival of the Unexpected, where it was performed virtually over Zoom for audiences.

Portland Stage is excited to bring some of these projects to life on our Mainstage as we begin our New Era, New Work season! When Dickens penned A Christmas Carol, his world was in the midst of a seismic shift. The Industrial Revolution changed the face of London beyond recognition—filling the air with coal smoke and the streets with people searching for employment. As people left rural communities for cities, the old methods of caring for those in need no longer worked. There was no social safety net, and thousands were left to fend for 68 - Return to Index - Portland Presents
themselves. Today, our world faces a similar dilemma but on a global scale. Dickens’s response to the crisis was to create Scrooge, the ultimate miser. And through a ghost story along with a bevy of spirits, Dickens worked to open the old miser’s eyes, and ours, to a world in need of change. The act of bearing witness to humanity is what ultimately transforms Scrooge. From joining Bob Cratchit and his gaggle of children in a meager Christmas dinner and later mourning the loss of Tiny Tim, to remembering the communal joy of an “unnecessary” Fezziwig feast and witnessing people “in misery’s every refuge” taking care of one another. By understanding one person’s power to make a difference, we see what it means to be human. As we seek to transform our world, I hope we can find time to understand one another’s stories and see people in our world community as “fellow passengers to the grave and not another race of creatures bound on less important journeys,” as Nephew Fred proclaims. As we travel with Scrooge on the journey of a lifetime, we watch him discover how much he has lost with his outlook on life and learn just how much he can gain by embracing those around him and working together for the common good. If a man like Scrooge can become a better person, then there is, indeed, hope for us all.

Whoa everyone, what a nail biter. Even as I write this, we are still getting this one over the finish line. When not directing, Sally is an actor, fight choreographer, teaching artist, and theater professor working with theaters locally, regionally, and abroad. In Maine, Sally’s directing credits include AIRE Theater, Bates and Bowdoin Colleges, the University of New England, The Theater at Monmouth, Portland Stage Company, Fenix Theatre Company, and Good Theater. Some recent directing credits include Year of the Rooster; The Learned Ladies; Veils; Papermaker; Almost, Maine; and Henry VI, part II. Massive thanks to the cast, design team, and crew of A Christmas Carol who have truly been heroic in their flexibility, tenacity, creativity, and goodwill to bring this show to life. CAST BIOGRAPHIES originated the role of the Mad Hatter in Jane Doe in Wonderland: Theater Against Sex Trafficking, which toured northern California and was featured on CNN. A Dell’Arte International School of Physical Theatre MFA graduate, his thesis has been performed at theater festivals internationally. He’s worked with Chicago’s 500Clown and traveled to Bali, Indonesia, to learn traditional mask carving and performance. Recently was the Assistant Director and Accordion Player for University of Southern Maine’s first touring production, The Marvelous Meep Island Adventure, giving free outdoor shows. YOUNG COMPANY BIOGRAPHIES Seamus Bailey is a 7th grade student at Gorham Middle School. This is his first show at Portland Stage and he is thrilled to be a part of it. He has previously done several shows at the Gorham Community Arts Center and appeared as Jack in the Gorham Middle School production of Once Upon a Zoom. Shay also enjoys playing the bass drums in the steel drum band, reading, and playing video games. Quinn Fisher is a sweet sister, daughter, friend, Lord of the Rings nerd, and music lover. She’s in the 7th grade at Breakwater School. Quinn loves playing her ukulele and the bass, drawing, working with her hands to create, and going to the theater. She also loves making new friends. Quinn currently resides in Saco with her family. This is her fourth season at Portland Stage and she is very excited to continue to learn all she can from her fellow actors. Dillon Jenkins is so excited to return to Portland Stage for a third season. He has played Tiny Tim in A Christmas Carol and was in the It’s a Wonderful Life ensemble cast. Recently Dillon was in the Ogunquit Playhouse’s Broadway Revue. He played Eric in Lyric Music Theater’s production of Matilda. Dillon has been performing since he was 7 years old in any way possible! He is 12 and a 7th grader at Scarborough Middle School. He loves math, spending time with his sister’s friends, and making people laugh! When he grows up, Dillon plans on acting or teaching. Lyra Legawiec is an 8th grader at Mt. Ararat Middle School. This is her sixth year doing the holiday show at Portland Stage, and her third year doing A Christmas Carol. Other acting credits include several seasons with the Camden Shakespeare Festival and the past two seasons with the Ziggurat Theatre Ensemble, as well as past productions with her school. Outside of performing, Lyra enjoys making art, reading, and singing. She’s very excited to be back at Portland Stage, and she hopes you enjoy the show! Wyn McBee is a freshman at Waynflete and excited to continue with Portland Stage. His favorite past roles include Oliver in As You Like It and Charlotte in Charlotte’s Web. When not acting, he is learning to apply his dramatic skills to the school debate team. Wyn also enjoys music, baking, reading, swimming, and skateboarding. He is excited

to return to a love of travel and to learn to scuba dive this summer. His cats, Max and Gucci, prefer when he snuggles up and watches Marvel movies instead.
Paige Scala is excited to be back for her fifth year performing in the Christmas show at Portland Stage! Paige loves acting and has been in numerous local and school productions. So far her favorite characters to play have been Tiny Tim in A Christmas Carol and Demeter in Cats. She also enjoys taking dance lessons, working on art projects, and hanging out with her cats, Winston and Pumpkin. Marsden Shetterly is thrilled to be cast in A Christmas Carol. Marsden is 12 and in the 7th grade at the Friends School of Portland. He has been studying acting with Portland Stage since he was four years old. Marsden runs cross country for his school, plays basketball for his town, tap dances with Casco Bay Movers, and plays piano. During the pandemic, he made his first claymation film. It took him eight months, consisted of 1,502 frames, and was called “Electrician Bob.” It screened at Zero Station. He is grateful to his mom, dad, and brother Levin for their love. Henry Trowbridge is in the eighth grade at Cape Elizabeth Middle School. He is excited to be in A Christmas Carol this year! He also loved being a part of several prior holiday productions at Portland Stage, including It’s a Wonderful Life and A Christmas Carol. Outside of acting, Henry enjoys baseball, soccer, and skiing. Tucker Wood is a 7th grader at Lyman Moore Middle School who has done these amazing Christmas plays for five whole years. They love acting and writing, and they like to go roller skating and on thrill rides! They have lots of acting experience. Tucker has one dog and one cat and a little brother named Charlie, who is 7. They cannot wait to do more shows in the future and keep on pursuing acting! Daphne Zager has enjoyed theater since she was six years old. She has participated in Portland Stage camps, school plays, chorus, and Portland Stage’s production of It’s a Wonderful Life. She is in seventh grade at Lincoln Middle School. Daphne wants to be a research psychologist when she grows up. Some of her hobbies include playing with pets and pet sitting, volunteering, and, obviously, theater! She is very excited to be a part of A Christmas Carol this year.

ARTISTIC & PRODUCTION BIOGRAPHIES Anita Stewart (Scenic Designer) has worked as a set and costume designer at leading theaters across the country, including the Guthrie, Seattle Rep, Canadian Opera Company, Minnesota Opera, A.R.T., Steppenwolf, Hartford Stage, Dallas Theater Center, Long Wharf Theatre, New York Theatre Workshop, Boise Contemporary Theater, New Jersey Shakespeare, and Portland Stage. Anita’s desire to play a meaningful role as an artist in a specific community brought her to Portland Stage as Artistic Director, a company for which she had previously done significant freelance design. Susan Thomas (Costume Designer) In addition to designing A Christmas Carol, Susan Thomas has been the Costume Shop Manager since 2006. Some of Susan’s design credits at Portland Stage Company are A Christmas Carol, The Snow Queen, The Santaland Diaries, Mary’s Wedding, Fully Committed, and Longfellow: A Life in Words in previous seasons. Susan has worked in the costume shops of a variety of regional theaters, including the Theater Department at USM, Maine State Music Theater Costume Rentals, Geva Theater Center, Shakespeare & Company, The Theater at Monmouth, Fenix Theatre Company, The Opera House at Boothbay Harbor, and Port Opera. Enjoy the show! Bryon Winn (Lighting Designer) is delighted to be returning to Portland Stage for his 23rd season. He has designed over 65 productions for Portland Stage. Chris’s past designs with PSC include: Fences, Brighton Beach Memoirs, and Almost, Maine. He has also designed sound for Dramatic Repertory Company, The Maine Playwrights Festival, and The Children’s Theater of Maine (to name a few). He works with the Portland Symphony Orchestra, designing the set for their annual Magic of Christmas concerts and occasionally runs lights and sound. Chris works at Breakwater School and is also the Technical Director for Bonny Eagle High School. Love to Jessica and the boyz. Myles C. Hatch (Stage Manager) is strengthened by the resolve and dedication of all his fellow artist from the actors, young company families, to the intern/apprentices, all production departments and everyone in the administration alike. Victorian England was host to a growing fascination with the paranormal, apparitions, and other supernatural occurrences. Hypnosis and mesmerism were coming into fashion, and ever-growing numbers of people were seeking their own supernatural experiences. Reports of spirits sending messages through knocking on walls were common, especially when playing with Ouija boards, which had recently been introduced to the West. This is due, in part, to the growing fascination with the recent rise of the spiritualist movement. The central belief that defined spiritualism was that the dead could return to Earth and commune with the living, often carrying a moralizing message like Marley and the other ghosts Scrooge encounters during A Christmas Carol. Dickens utilized spiritualism to craft a story that includes a moment of redemption for the characters and an overarching moral lesson about the dangers of greed and the importance of charitable giving.

DICKENS’S RESPONSE TO THE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION Edited by Dylan Gurrera
During the Industrial Revolution, big factories began to rise up across the country, and while Britain’s textile industry flourished, the working class suffered. Like the Cratchits, entire families were put to work—even children. The life expectancy of an English laborer decreased over the course of the first half of the century to an average of 17 years in 1851. At the same time, the Industrial Revolution reinvigorated the strict social relief policies in the country. Poverty was seen largely as a lifestyle choice born of fraud, indolence, and improvidence. The English Poor Laws of 1834 set up workhouses and debtors’ prisons filled with the most desperate of England’s population. Men, women, and children lived in the most inhumane conditions imaginable and were forced to work off however much money they had been given to subsist. This is the English society that Dickens knew and hated. His writing exposed the hideous underbelly of the society in an attempt to change the hearts of many.

INTERVIEW WITH DIRECTOR SALLY WOOD By Macey Downs
Directing and Dramaturgy Apprentice Macey Downs spoke with director Sally Wood about her history with Portland Stage and A Christmas Carol. Macey Downs (MD): You’ve worked with Portland Stage a lot! How have you grown as a theater artist over the course of your time here? Sally Wood (SW): I’ve worked here over 20 years now. Which just seems unreal to me. Hopefully I’ve grown a lot as an artist. When I was a junior in college, I came to Maine for the first time and went to Portland Stage. I can remember thinking as I sat in the audience that if I ever got to perform on that stage, then I would have really made it. I think about that all the time. MD: I know you’ve previously performed in A Christmas Carol. What has it been like to come back to this play as a director? How has your acting experience informed your directing? SW: It’s been really helpful in terms of the logistics around the play. There are a lot of moving parts to this one, and having performed in it so much I really have a strong grasp on the innards of this play. Which has been really valuable in this process. I have to tell you, though, I’ve got even more respect for Anita than I had coming in. This play is hard to direct, there’s a lot of people to move around the stage, and that can be quite overwhelming.

MD: This is the 25th anniversary production! What is it like to do a piece that has been done many times before, and what are you particularly excited about regarding this year’s version? SW: It’s a story that’s been told time and time again, and yet for some reason with really brilliant work like A Christmas Carol, I just don’t get sick of it. Especially in the hands of a really gifted Scrooge, there’s something about him being reborn at the end that just gets me every single time. And I think Tom Ford is crushing it. MD: Why is it important to do A Christmas Carol this year? SW: I think it’s important to do A Christmas Carol every year. It helps me to reaffirm my priorities. I love the idea that this absolutely hideous human being can still find his way through all the greed, through all the selfishness, and he’s able to turn it all around. So that even at the times when I’m at my most selfish, that maybe that’s just a bad moment, and I’ll be given a second chance. Because that sure feels like something we all deserve. Even Ebenezer Scrooge.
