With a season of six Mainstage Shows and a Holiday Show, Portland Stage brings a wide range of performances to Maine. Every Mainstage show is handcrafted in our historic building in the Portland Arts District. Over one season, Portland Stage creates over two hundred live performances and serves 50,000 people from around the state and beyond.

EDUCATION
Education is central to Portland Stage’s mission. Vital education programs are offered in schools for students from pre-K through high school, and to children ages 4-18 through classes in our Susie Konkel Theater for Kids storefront space. Portland Stage’s Education Programs provide over 14,000 student experiences each year. PLAY ME A STORY: LIVING ROOM SERIES presented by Portland Stage Theater for Kids allows participants to enjoy dramatic readings of picture books, then participate in an interactive acting workshop with professional theater artists.

Portland Stage is known for its role in cultivating new voices in theater and for creating a significant body of theatrical work that has gone on to success beyond our stage. By incubating new work and supporting writers, Portland Stage has established Maine as a place to launch original and compelling plays. Since its debut in 1990, the Little Festival of the Unexpected (LFU) has established a tradition of nurturing artists, invigorating audiences, and exploring new voices, visions, and forms of theater. Past LFU scripts include Almost, Maine (LFU 2003) and Papermaker (LFU 2014).
Playwright Greg Lam, 2020 Clauder Competition Grand Prize Winner for his play, Last Ship to Proxima Centauri, soon to be a Portland Stage Mainstage production. Greg’s play was selected to be a part of the 2021 Little Festival of the Unexpected, where it was performed virtually over Zoom for audiences.

Cultivating Curiosity Cultivating Curiosity helps grow young people’s love of books by pairing reading opportunities with School-Time Performances, by providing each child who attends the performance a free book born from its title. In I and You, we journey with two high school students forced to collaborate on a school project about Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass. As they share snacks, loves, and fears, the reality found in a teenage bedroom moves to the infinite. Playwright Lauren Gunderson uses Whitman’s singular book, Leaves of Grass, as a map into the life of another human being. As the two teens unpack Whitman’s words, his phrases kaleidoscope into the present; and we glimpse the beauty of connecting

to another human being stepping through the singular nature of life. This play conjures ghosts and memories. I think about acts of selflessness I have known. About people who have touched my life. The big acts and small. Connection doesn’t have to be melodramatic or front-page news—you never know when a smile, a touch, an action may be life-changing for the person on the other side. I’m reminded of a recent story told by Ketanji Brown Jackson during her nomination hearing for the Supreme Court. Judge Jackson shared the importance of a brief encounter with another Black woman in Harvard Yard as they passed going opposite directions. The stranger leaned in and whispered “persevere” as she passed. That one world changed the trajectory of a freshman who was doubting herself, and Jackson found the strength to keep moving forward to the highest court in the land. Each of us has an incredible power to help others. Each of us can make a difference. We are all made of stardust, and if we could follow Whitman’s simple advice, what a beautiful world we could have. LAUREN GUNDERSON, PLAYWRIGHT
Lauren Gunderson has been one of the most produced playwrights in America since 2015 topping the list twice, including 2019/20. She is a two-time winner of the Steinberg/ATCA New Play Award for I and You and The Book of Will, the winner of the Lanford Wilson Award and the Otis Guernsey New Voices Award, a finalist for the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize and John Gassner Award for Playwriting, and a recipient of the Mellon Foundation’s Residency with Marin Theatre Company. She studied Southern Literature and Drama at Emory University, and Dramatic Writing at NYU’s Tisch School where she was a Reynolds Fellow in Social Entrepreneurship. She co-authored the Miss Bennet plays with Margot Melcon, and her play The Half-Life of Marie Curie is available on Audible.com. ABOUT WALT WHITMAN AND LEAVES OF GRASS By Meredith G. Healy
Walt Whitman was born on May 31, 1819, in Huntington, Long Island, New York. It wasn’t until 1841 that he began working fulltime in journalism. From 1841 to 1859, he held editorial positions at seven different newspapers in Long Island and Brooklyn. During this time, he became well known for his support of reform in the social, political, and economic realms, and was fired from his job as the editor of the Brooklyn Daily Eagle for supporting antislavery groups. Whitman also began publishing stories and poems in newspapers and magazines, but it wasn’t until 1855 that he published Leaves of Grass, his first volume of poetry. The first edition of Leaves of Grass was self-published. The collection is a departure from traditional poetic style; Whitman abandoned the use of rhymes and a specific meter in favor of free verse and wrote many of the poems in first person, as is examined by Anthony and Caroline for their English project in I and You. The use of “I” in his poetry allows the poems to have a sense of timelessness, with the past, present, and future all informing each other.

THE APPEAL AND ALLURE OF SICK-LIT By Macey Downs
An awkward teenage girl captivates a popular jock and ends up teaching him important lessons about himself as he falls for her. Then comes the reveal that she has a terminal illness and their time together is limited. This Playwright is the trajectory of many novels Lauren Gunderson that fall into the category that has come to be known as “sick-lit,” which is often thought of as a subgenre underneath the broader young adult (YA) fiction classification. The appeal of these stories to adolescents and teenagers can perhaps be explained by the intrinsic curiosity humans exhibit surrounding mortality and death. There is also an element of catharsis in reading sad stories about a character whose fate has no lasting impact on the reader’s own life. Sick-lit narratives can allow young people to begin testing out feelings of grief with the safety net of fictional events. Another benefit to reading sick-lit is that the content opens up an opportunity for teens and parents to discuss heavy or taboo topics, such as illness, sex, mortality, and mental health. I and You exhibits many of the tropes found in sick-lit stories. A teenage girl with a potentially terminal illness connects in an unexpected way with a popular male classmate. Gunderson leans into these tropes, and then surprises the audience when it becomes clear that Anthony has just as much to teach Caroline about life as she has to teach him. When this idea gets turned on its head, it becomes clear that there might be more to Anthony’s visit than meets the eye.

INTERVIEW WITH THE DIRECTOR By Macey Downs
Directing and Dramaturgy Apprentice Macey Downs spoke with director Cait Robinson about I and You. Macey Downs (MD): You first started at Portland Stage around 2010 as an intern! What has your experience been continuing to come back to one of the earliest theaters you worked at, and how have you grown as a director since then? Cait Robinson (CR): Coming back to the place that you started out as an artist is a wonderful experience! It’s the people who supported you and developed who you are as an artist so you have a shared vocabulary, a shared memory, and shared interests with them. Since I was here, I’ve gotten a lot more reps in—you just get a lot more experience. I believe in the value of showing up and doing the work and not judging yourself too hard, and just knowing that if you commit x number of years to directing then you will learn things that you don’t realize you’re learning at the time. You will osmose and you will develop as an artist if you put in the time and the effort. I’m a big believer in reps! MD: Is there a specific scene, moment, or idea from the play that you are most excited for people to see or experience? CR: There’s something about being a teenager that this play captures. The feelings of awkwardness and hope and intense desire. And also these sort of fluid social boundaries where sometimes they start talking and they can’t stop, and they say

something that embarrasses them that I think is so relatable. No matter how old you are, if you remember your first kiss or your first crush or some of the social situations from your high school years, I think you’ll really enjoy watching Caroline and Anthony experiencing some of those things in their own ways. I’m excited to bring people along for that journey of those first blushes of feeling that they have. MD: And there’s definitely been like a feeling of catharsis in the rehearsal room of us all watching these moments and being like, “Oh, no! I remember this!” CR: I know! When you’re a kid you feel like you’re the only person in the world who’s ever been able to speak articulately around someone that you find attractive, or even just in general. So, there’s something about seeing them act it out onstage, and they’re so funny, that makes it really fun to go along with that. Not have to relive it yourself, but vicariously enjoy their sweetness. I love the comedy, I love the language that Lauren Gunderson uses in it, so it’s just a pleasure to work on, like a treat.
