With a season of six Mainstage Shows and a Holiday Show, Portland Stage brings a wide range of performances to Maine. Every Mainstage show is handcrafted in our historic building in the Portland Arts District. Over one season, Portland Stage creates over two hundred live performances and serves 50,000 people from around the state and beyond.

Education is central to Portland Stage’s mission. Vital education programs are offered in schools for students from pre-K through high school, and to children ages 4-18 through classes in our Susie Konkel Theater for Kids storefront space. Portland Stage’s Education Programs provide over 14,000 student experiences each year. PLAY ME A STORY: LIVING ROOM SERIES presented by Portland Stage Theater for Kids allows participants to enjoy dramatic readings of picture books, then participate in an interactive acting workshop with professional theater artists.

Portland Stage is known for its role in cultivating new voices in theater and for creating a significant body of theatrical work that has gone on to success beyond our stage. By incubating new work and supporting writers, Portland Stage has established Maine as a place to launch original and compelling plays. Since its debut in 1990, the Little Festival of the Unexpected (LFU) has established a tradition of nurturing artists, invigorating audiences, and exploring new voices, visions, and forms of theater. Past LFU scripts include Almost, Maine (LFU 2003) and Papermaker (LFU 2014).
Playwright Greg Lam, 2020 Clauder Competition Grand Prize Winner for his play, Last Ship to Proxima Centauri, soon to be a Portland Stage Mainstage production. Greg’s play was selected to be a part of the 2021 Little Festival of the Unexpected, where it was performed virtually over Zoom for audiences.

Pre-Performance Lectures Join Ovations Offstage for an in-depth look at an art form, artist, or performance theme. These presentations contextualize the performance and bring new meaning to the main event.
School-Time Performances Energize and engage your students with the performing arts and artists through onstage school-time matinees, digital offerings and offstage theater activities. Experiences are aligned with Common Core standards and are supported by educator resources and learning guides. Cultivating Curiosity Cultivating Curiosity helps grow young people’s love of books by pairing reading opportunities with School-Time Performances, by providing each child who attends the performance a free book born from its title. Gatherings From a processional performance to shared meals to a walking tour of Portland’s Freedom Trail, Ovations Offstage gathers communities to connect more deeply and locally with the art, artists, and ideas onstage.

“Welcome back to the theater!” Thanks to our subscribers and donors, we were able to continue our mission of bringing live theater to Maine during the pandemic by producing five plays as well as workshopping and developing over eight new projects with thousands of online participants. Portland Stage is excited to bring some of these projects to life on our Mainstage as we begin our New Era, New Work season! From Perseverance by local writer Callie Kimball, to Senior Living, recommended to us by John Cariani, to Sabina, a new musical that was originally part of our 19-20 season, to Last Ship to Proxima Centauri, the 2020 Clauder Competition winner, to Broadway star Richard Topol’s Searching for Mr. Moon, these new plays will explore a wide range of topics that offer a diversity of perspective on our world today. Senior Living, a new play by Tor Hyams and Lisa St. Lou, celebrates small victories as a gaggle of seniors living in the same facility step through their daily lives. Played by five actors who shape-shift throughout the performance, the characters find light in the

experience of growing old—twirling in wheelchairs; finding joy in the pleasure of rice pudding; and tapping, singing, and flirting their way through life. They have the same desire for love and romance, the same assuredness about what they think, and the same awareness of technology that they did in their twenties. They are human beings. While their age might have changed, the people have not. So if you are of a certain age, whether 21 or 100, I think you will find moments that make you smile and laugh out loud as well as fundamental truths spoken by this funny, quirky cast of characters who, as Tor likes to say, “are dying to live.” Here’s to making the most of our time on this earth. TOR HYAMS & LISA ST. LOU PLAYWRIGHTS
Grammy-nominated songwriter Tor Hyams and Broadway performer Lisa St. Lou (The Producers) offer a unique blend of comedy and heart through musicals, plays, and screenwriting. Original theater works include Stealing Time, where a woman struggles to reconcile her place in a failing marriage (premiered NYMF/2012); The Skylight Room, a collection of stories about lonely people searching for connection, with actor/writer John Cariani; Howie D: Back in the Day, a family musical about belonging and race, based on the real-life experience of Backstreet Boy Howie D (world premiere at The Rose Theater – Omaha, NE/January 2020); and Collateral Beauty, an adaptation of the film starring Will Smith (with screenwriter Allan Loeb). Commissions include a musical adaptation of the legendary television show Green Acres; Ensemble, a collection of previously unpublished letters by Tennessee Williams; and Untitled, a “Golden Age” musical for middle and high school-age students. Tor and Lisa have adapted Senior Living into a half-hour television show. Additional TV pilots include The Lou, the story of a singer/songwriter forced to return home and face her dysfunctional family in St. Louis; Animal Control, about an elite squad in Beaver County, OK, who keep us safe from the animals and the animals safe from us; Clusterf*ck, the story of two fortysomethings who stop at nothing to “write” all the wrongs of life’s banalities; and The Whites, the story of a Black family living in a wealthy, White suburb during the Obama years. JUDITH IVEY, DIRECTOR Judith Ivey is the recipient of the Tony Award, the Drama Desk Award, the Obie Award, and the Lucille Lortel Award for her performances on and off Broadway. Some film credits include Devil’s Advocate; Washington Square; Mystery, Alaska; Brighton Beach Memoirs; Love Hurts; Compromising Positions; What Alice Found; Flags of Our Fathers; A Bird of The Air; Big Stone Gap; and the just completed Women Talking. Judith starred in four television series, the most memorable being Designing Women. Some television film credits include The Long, Hot Summer; What the Deaf Man Heard (Emmy nomination); and Rose Red. Her directing credits include Quack at the Alley Theatre in Houston, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof at Center Stage in Baltimore, The Ladies Foursome and Fireflies at the Public Theatre in Maine, Chapatti at North Coast Rep and the Laguna Playhouse, and Steel Magnolias as well as the world premiere of Carapace at Atlanta’s Alliance Theatre where she was nominated for a Bass Award. CAST BIOGRAPHIES Cynthia Barnett (Lynn / Alice / Mary / Ellen) has happily returned to the Portland area, after dividing her time between Maine and South Carolina for the past 15 years. As a 13year core ensemble member of Pure Theatre, Charleston, SC (Sharon Graci, Artistic Director), roles included Nora in Doll’s House, Part 2; Mag in Beauty Queen of Leenane; Anna in Our Mother’s Brief Affair; Polly in Other Desert Cities; Dottie in Good People; and Aoife in Outside Mullingar. As a founding member of Mad Horse Theatre Company, Portland, ME (Michael Rafkin, Artistic Director), roles included Martha in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf, Beatrice in A View from the Bridge, Gertrude in Hamlet, Andreas in Coyote Ugly, and Ellen in Squats, written by Martin Jones, MHTC resident playwright. Cynthia also had the opportunity to work with Good Theater, Portland, ME (Brian Allen, Artistic Director), as Mattie Faye in August: Osage County. Her New York years were filled working in dozens of commercials, voice-overs, soap opera guest appearances, and exploring new works with 79th St. Theatre Lab/The Drilling Company, and Abington Theatre, among others. SeifAllah Salotto-Cristobal (Lighting Designer) is excited to be making his design debut with Portland Stage Company. He has been telling stories using light and video for the past 16 years. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Humanities from the University of West Florida and a Master of Fine Arts in Lighting and Projection Design from the University of Missouri-Kansas City where he became one of the first to study projections for performance. His career has taken him across the country and has allowed him to design for many companies in opera, dance, and theater, including Opera Colorado (Denver, CO), Palm Beach Opera (Palm Beach, FL), Tulsa Opera (Tulsa, OK), Unicorn Theater (Kansas City, MO), Wagon Wheel Center for the Arts (Warsaw, IN), Umbrella Stage Company (Concord, MA), and Theater at Monmouth (Monmouth, ME). He currently serves as the Assistant Professor of Lighting Design at the University of Southern Maine where he brings his knowledge and experience to help shape the next generation of theater professionals, focusing on developing complete storytelling. www.seif.design

ARTISTIC & PRODUCTION BIOGRAPHIES John Morrison (Sound Designer) is a sound technician from Auburn, ME. John frequently mixes live music performances at the Opera House in Boothbay Harbor and provides tech support to theater and dance programs at Bates College, and to the Bates Dance Festival. He is in his 7th season in the sound department at The Public Theatre in Lewiston, ME. Notable recent projects include sound designs for Fireflies directed by Judith Ivey, I and You, and Grease, all at The Public. John last worked at Portland Stage with MSMT on The Irish and How They Got That Way. In addition, he has mixed live performances of David Lang’s the little match girl passion for Figures of Speech Theatre at College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA. Over the years, John has worked on recording projects with James Taylor, Spalding Gray, and Chris Botti. It is unlikely that anyone recalls John’s audio contributions to early ‘80s New York productions of Taking Steam, The Smiling Assassins, or Mysteries of the Bridal Night. Meg Lydon (Stage Manager) is thrilled to join the production team for her first season here at Portland Stage! She has loved getting to know the theater community here in Portland; recent work has been at Fenix Theatre Company, Good Theater, Dramatic Repertory Company, and Bates and Bowdoin Colleges. A BRIEF HISTORY OF SENIOR LIVING FACILITIES IN THE US By Meredith G. Healy
Dr. Keren Wilson is credited with opening the first assisted living facility in Oregon in 1981. Assisted living is defined as “a long-term care option that combines housing, support services, and health care as needed” by the Assisted Living Federation of America. Dr. Wilson’s goals were to let seniors have a sense of autonomy and independence, while also providing different levels of care to different residents depending on their needs. For example, many facilities have units designated for residents with Alzheimer’s or dementia who need more support than those in the general population. In 1988, Dr. Wilson’s facility, Park Place, became the first licensed assisted living facility in the US. As illustrated in Senior Living, there are many benefits to living in an assisted living facility like Riverdale Manor. These facilities strive to give residents as much independence as possible. Rooms and apartments can be decorated with personal furniture and belongings, many locations allow pets, and residents have control of their schedules. Residents can form lasting and meaningful relationships, and there is a range of activities and programs to encourage connections and a sense of community.

Playwrights Tor Hyams and Lisa St. Lou wrote Senior Living in an engaging style that jumps between short, self-contained scenes surrounding a single theme: what life looks like for Riverdale Manor residents who have experienced full lives yet are still “dying to live.” Senior Living fits into the theatrical canon of vignette plays, named for their brief, descriptive vignette-like scenes. Vignettes in theater or literature are often impressionistic and focus on one particular moment rather than a long-form plot. The individual parts of vignette plays may be simple and small, but the ways the vignettes speak to each other add varying perspectives and ideas to an overarching theme. This vignette play style will be familiar to frequent Portland Stage audience members. The most famous vignette play is John Cariani’s Almost, Maine, which premiered at Portland Stage in 2004. It feels suitable that a vignette play from and about Maine is the most significant piece of theater to come out of this state, and that Portland Stage is continuing that tradition by premiering Senior Living this January. Life in Maine sometimes feels like a series of vignettes––embracing slower living, moments of stillness in the outdoors, close-knit communities, and snapshots of changing seasons. Vignette plays remind us that our pockets of community tell one story on their own, but are most powerful when intentionally connected to the stories of others.

Directing and Dramaturgy Apprentice Meredith G. Healy spoke with playwrights Tor Hyams and Lisa St. Lou, and director Judith Ivey about Senior Living. Meredith G. Healy: Is there something in particular that drew you into this script? Judith Ivey (JI): I have a certain affinity for older people. My mother is about to turn 100 and my dad is 94, and it’s pretty amazing to still have your parents at my age. I know what my parents go through being older, and now I’m reaching the age where you start to become aware of being a senior citizen. So I thought the script was refreshing. MGH: I’d also imagine that for older actors it is exciting to have an opportunity to be the focus and the center of attention in this story. Lisa St. Lou (LSL): That was also part of the inspiration for creating this piece. The older generation in this country is so often tossed to the side and treated as an afterthought. That is a group that still has so much to give. Tor Hyams (TH): No one talks about old people because we don’t want to think about them. We don’t want to face our own mortality, or face the idea that we will also eventually be old. Everyone gets old. We did not set out to write a play because of that, but it became a byproduct of what we’re doing.

MGH: Why do you think it is important to do this show right now? TH: Because it’s about hope, love, and humanity. In this time of such tension across the planet, I think we could all use a break from the noise to see a reflection of ourselves on a stage. I want people to come out of the show feeling like you can have hope and can have love. LSL: I think the tagline that Tor thought of for this play is very true. It is a play about people dying to live, which is what we’re all doing. Deep down inside of everyone there is a hope that tomorrow will be better and that we will have the courage to keep going. MGH: What are you hoping audiences will take away from this production? JI: I hope that they will rejoice in these stories. I hope they walk away celebrating what it is to grow older.
