NEW WORK Portland Stage is committed to cultivating our region’s playwrights while introducing our audience to the creative process. We inspire, nurture, and launch plays that will delight audiences for decades to come by incubating new work.

Since its debut in 1990, the Little Festival of the Unexpected (LFU) has established a tradition of nurturing artists, invigorating audiences, and exploring new voices, visions, and forms of theater. Past LFU scripts include Almost, Maine (LFU 2003) and Papermaker (LFU 2014).

Actor, Tony nominee and playwright, John Cariani, whose Almost, Maine is one of the most produced plays by high schools and colleges, will return to Portland Stage this season with a new Made in Maine production, Not Quite Almost.

MAINSTAGE With a season of six Mainstage shows, Portland Stage brings a wide range of performances to Maine. Every Mainstage show is handcrafted in our historic building in the Portland Arts District. These are some of the questions I ask myself as I watch Madeleines, a new play that has been crafted over the past ten years by Maine playwright Bess Welden. In this play, two sisters, Jen and Deb, uncover a mystery in an Ohio kitchen that leads them into an unknown chapter in their family’s past. As they learn details about the past, they simultaneously discover secrets of their present. Unpacking their personal truths, the sisters grapple with their own place in the family history and what it means to see that shared history from a different perspective. Madeleines reminds us that while learning about our history may start in our own backyard (or kitchen), it ultimately brings us closer to the world and deepens our connections with others. History is made not individually, but together, and we must collectively work to keep the ideas and narratives of our ancestors and communities alive. Here’s to remembering the past and listening for the truth today.

PLAYWRIGHT

Bess Welden

is a theater maker living and creating in Maine. She spent 2022 as a National Arts Strategies Creative Community Fellow for her work at the intersection of art-making and social change. She served as the 2024 Playwright-InResidence for the Maine Playwrights Festival and recently created a commission for the Lives Eliminated, Dreams Illuminated project, an interdisciplinary visual art, music, and theater exhibition honoring girls and young women who died in the Holocaust.

Madeleines won the 2022 National Jewish Playwriting Contest. The script was developed in New York City with Jewish Plays Project, in Palo Alto with TheatreWorks Silicon Valley, in Indiana with the Jewish Theatre of Bloomington, in West Hartford, CT, with Playhouse on Park, and with Portland Stage as part of the Little Festival of the Unexpected. Bess’ play with songs, Death Wings, won the 2020 Maine State Prize of the Clauder Competition for New England Playwrights and was produced in Maine by Dramatic Repertory Company, The Theater Project, and Meetinghouse Arts with major support from the New England Foundation for the Arts and the Maine Arts Commission. Death Wings was also a 2020 semi-finalist for the prestigious O’Neill New Play Conference and was workshopped with Fresh Ink Theatre at Boston Center for the Arts. Refuge Malja, a finalist in the 2020 National Jewish Playwriting Contest, premiered on Portland Stage’s Mainstage. Monologues from Death Wings and Madeleines are featured in the 2021 and 2024 Best Women’s Stage Monologues published by Smith & Kraus. Her plays Celebrity Exit and All I Ever Wanted Was to Play were produced at Colby College. Mergirl Saves the Waves, a feminist, environmentalist adaptation of The Little Mermaid, was developed with Portland Stage Theater for Kids and A Company of Girls. Her solo comedies The Passion of the Hausfrau and Big Mouth Thunder Thighs premiered in Portland Stage’s Studio Theater, and her collaborative theater performance project with live music and illustration, Legbala is a River, premiered at Mayo Street Arts. Annette Jolles***

has created a diverse body of work as a director and producer for theater and television and is the recipient of 22 Emmy Awards. TV directing for Live From Lincoln Center includes symphonic concerts for the NY Philharmonic and Mostly Mozart, three Richard Tucker Galas, and solo programs featuring Cynthia Erivo; Sutton Foster; Leslie Odom, Jr.; Norm Lewis; and Patina Miller. She also produced PBS’ Stars on Stage from Westport Country Playhouse, directing episodes starring Shoshana Bean and Brandon Victor Dixon. Stage direction includes Così fan tutte (Alice Tully Hall), Amahl and the Night Visitors (Geffen Hall), Peter and the Wolf (BAM), The Soldier’s Tale featuring Danny Burstein (La Jolla Music Society), and the Off-Broadway/world premieres of That Time of the Year and Little by Little (York Theatre Company). At NYC’s Symphony Space, she has produced and directed over fifty programs, notably Wall to Wall Bernstein, Wall to Wall Sondheim, Project Broadway, and gala concerts of Pippin, A Little Night Music, and Cabaret. She is thrilled to reunite with playwright Bess Welden, with whom prior collaborations include The Passion of the Hausfrau and Keeping the Word. She teaches musical theater performance at Yale. PLAYNOTES PERSPECTIVES AN INTERVIEW WITH PLAYWRIGHT BESS WELDEN AND DIRECTOR ANNETTE JOLLES*** Edited for length and clarity by Kimmarie McCrann Kimmarie McCrann (KM): What inspired you to start writing this play in 2015? Bess Welden (BW): I was part of a playwriting group with Snowlion Repertory

Company, which is still active here in Maine, and the artistic director of the company gave us a prompt to write a short play about food. It was just a wide-open prompt, and then they were going to produce whatever we wrote as sort of a collection of short plays about food. So this idea of a character, a woman who is a professional cookie baker and someone who would have sort of cataloged her life through recipes, came to me. And then when I sat down to write, it was these characters that emerged. And then I realized that I wanted to really connect it to Jewish culture and how food and recipes and stories are all sort of wrapped up together.

KM: So, why madeleines cookies specifically? BW: I think the answer is, it was intuitive. It was just something that came from the collective unconscious, imaginative swamp that gets sort of channeled down when you’re in a space of creating a story. So it wasn’t because I had a personal, deep relationship with madeleines, but I’ve developed a real love of baking as an adult. KM: When did Annette come into the picture? BW: I had submitted the play to the Jewish Plays Project, the National Jewish Playwriting

Contest, and it had been a semi-finalist one year, and it became a finalist for the 2022 year. And that’s when I thought, “Oh, I really need to collaborate with a Jewish woman, director, dramaturg on this piece. And I know who that is.” It was early fall of 2021, leading up to 2022, where I understood that there was going to be some future development of this play, and I really wanted to have a director that I trusted and that I knew would understand the story, and Annette was the perfect person.

Annette Jolles (AJ): She didn’t have to do much convincing because number one,

I would work with Bess anytime, anywhere. And also, coming out of COVID, I was really struggling to figure out what I wanted to say or do in theater. When I read Madeleines I felt like I knew these women, and immediately related to what the play was saying about family, illness, sisters, secrets and faith, and to the wonderful mystical elements that are woven in. For the first time since the pandemic I thought, “Oh, I can do this. I think this truly feels relevant, and I think it’s important.”

KM: Annette, can you describe more specifically some of the things that you are thinking about while staging this piece? AJ: I’m thinking about honoring and illuminating the text and making it three(***Member of SDC)

dimensional. But I think in this particular play, there’s a challenge, there’s a lot of physical activity that is written into the fabric of what it is. You are cooking on stage. You are writing on stage. You are making things on stage. You have a character who is there who is no longer alive. So how does that physically manifest in the staging? So some of it is practical. You’re thinking both practical and you’re thinking theatrical, right? And how do those things meet to basically bring the story to life, which starts with the [set] design. I don’t stage until I really understand what the design is. I think, for me, staging is informed by, “What does that physical world look like, and how do you move through it?” KM: How do you think the characters’ Judaism and family history inform the world of the play? BW: I think for a lot of American Jews, myself included, [we] find so much connection to

our Jewishness through cultural elements, such as music, food, art, as much as through the religious aspects which I choose to observe. I would also say, being able to write in a very culturally specific way ultimately ends up being the most universal way to tell a story. What I’ve heard over and over again is that there are so many things about these moments [in the play], these years in this family’s life, that just tracks. There are so many points of entry for people of any different background, ethnicity, or religion. This is a family drama, this is just human struggle, and people find themselves connecting with and resonating with the story.

AJ: It’s also an immigrant story. It’s a story about family secrets, it’s a story about aging

parents. It’s a story about food, sibling rivalry, a story about—

AJ & BW: Food— BW: —cooking, and the stories that go with those things, because those are just basic things we’re drawn to as humans. Somebody recently asked me, “How do you feel about the fact this play is being produced now, when there’s been this real rise over the last several years in antisemitism?” I think that actually it matters even more that we’re telling this story now. If you watch this play, hopefully you might think, “Oh, well, if that’s what Jews are like, then I’m just like them, right?”

FOOD AND JEWISH TRADITION By Micki Demby Kleinman

Every tragedy, victory, and survival the Jewish people encounter is a chance to celebrate and eat food. Beyond their love of eating, feeding loved ones, and food-centered rituals, the Jewish people are known for their delicious cuisine. When thinking of Jewish food, bagels, kugel, or latkes (fried potato pancakes) may initially come to mind. However, there is more cultural variety, and historical significance to these foods than most Americans may know. In 70 CE the Romans conquered Israel, destroyed the Beit Hamikdash, and expelled the Jews from their homeland. This diaspora led to culinary innovations and shaped the Jewish food world as it is seen today. One of the most recognizably Jewish foods are bagels, which are shaped by Jewish immigration and history. Jewish Poles were inspired by obwarzanek, a ring-shaped Polish bread, and from there created the smaller, single-serving bread now recognized as the bagel. After being inspired by Polish bread, Jewish immigrants brought the bread with them to the United States and shared that food with their new community. So, what is Jewish food? Perhaps Jewish food is food with a story attached, a sentimental significance, and one that pays homage to the local environment. Jewish people are adaptable and resilient, with strong roots in their history and tradition, a firm grip on the present, and an eye toward innovation and the future. Perhaps that is what makes Jewish people and Jewish food what they are.

THE JEWISH AMERICAN DIASPORA By Larsen Nichols

It’s May of 1945. The last of the concentration camps has been liberated, and the German surrender to the Allied powers is official. World War II in Europe has come to a close. Approximately 700,000 people have survived the concentration camps by the end of the Holocaust, like Jennifer and Debra’s Zayde (grandfather) in Madeleines. An overwhelming 11 million people have been displaced from their homes across Europe. But in the wake of such an atrocity, with few survivors of the camps able or willing to return home, where do all the survivors go? After the Holocaust, the United States became one of the largest immigration spots for displaced persons, admitting approximately 400,000 people by 1952, approximately 96,000 of which were Jewish survivors. This mass immigration to America laid the foundation for the US to host the largest population of Jews outside of Israel. Madeleines shows us the legacy of one of these such survivors, and the impact his move to America had on his descendants decades after the Holocaust. Once the war was over, the question for foreign governments became how to address and relocate the approximately 70,000 Jewish survivors of the concentration camps and 250,000 total displaced Jews. Many of these survivors were relocated to urban centers in Germany, Italy, and Austria, or displaced persons (DP) camps. Conditions in these camps were horrific, with displaced persons being kept in crowded and unsanitary conditions and under armed guard. Most of the DP camps across Europe closed in the late 1940s and early 1950s, with the last being closed in 1959. Polish Holocaust survivor Aron Derman recounts his journey to the United States: “It was real, real hard. Small boat they gave us and a boat with no facilities. With bunks. And it was all stormy, and all of us were sick.” When passengers like Derman arrived in the United States, they were faced with the challenge of completely starting over a new life. Few welfare programs like those we have today were available to these refugees. Organizations such as the New York Association for New Americans did provide support and aid for Holocaust survivors in New York, promoting work and self-support as paths to successful integration. These recent arrivals worked hard in the garment industry, as well as industries like cigar manufacturing, banking, construction, and food production. Though the journey for a better life was fraught and complicated for many Jewish refugees, the United States became a place of safety and opportunity. LAND & SLAVERY ACKNOWLEDGMENT We are creating theater on land that has been cared for by the Wabanaki. We honor their community and invite you to go to the Wabanaki Reach website to learn more about the Wabanaki culture, as well as about restorative justice and truth-telling that is necessary for healing. We encourage you to learn more about the peoples who cared for the land that you now reside on whether you’re from here in Portland or are visiting from away. For more information about the Wabanaki Confederacy, visit mainewabanakireach.org, and to find out whose land you are on, visit native-land.ca. We also want to acknowledge that the history of Maine is deeply connected to the institution of slavery in the United States, and that residents of Maine participated in both slavery and the transatlantic slave trade even after slavery was outlawed in the District of Maine. While it may be easy to think of Maine and more specifically Portland as a very White place, we recognize that this is simply not the case and we are working to dismantle these harmful ideas. We encourage our audiences to visit the Abyssinian Meeting House (learn more at abyssinianmeetinghouse.org) or the Eastern Cemetery here in Portland, and to explore scholarship on the subject, like Lives of Consequence by Patricia Q. Wall, to learn more about this oft-neglected part of Maine’s history. We recognize that the American Theater has also exploited, misrepresented, and excluded communities of Latine, Asian, Indigenous, and Middle Eastern descent for centuries. Portland Stage is recommitting to telling authentic stories from diverse backgrounds that all of our audiences can experience and enjoy.

ARTISTIC & PRODUCTION BIOS Kimberly Powers** (Scenic Designer) is delighted and grateful to be making her Portland Stage debut working with both her old friend, Bess Welden, and husband, Weston Wilkerson. She is an Arkansas-based set designer and artist whose work has been seen at venues across the country, including Syracuse Stage, Opera Theatre St. Louis, Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma, Arkansas Repertory Theatre, Riverside Theatre, Florida Repertory Theatre, Skylight Music Theatre, TheatreSquared, Virginia Stage Company, Charleston Stage, Stages, Casa Mañana, and Northern Stage. She was the Resident Set Designer for Ocean State Theatre Company’s inaugural season and for five years at Ohio Light Opera, as well as the first Design Assistant at the Denver Center Theatre Company. Kim has also been a freelance artist since 2000, and has also worked professionally as a muralist, props master, event designer and coordinator, graphic designer, and exhibit designer. She is part of a team that was awarded the 2022 Robert L.B. Tobin Director-Designer Prize from OPERA America for their conception of Sweeney Todd. She has taught in the theater departments of Coastal Carolina University, the University of Tulsa, Colby College, and the University of Arkansas, and remains a proud member of United Scenic Artists, Local 829. Michelle Handley (Costume Designer) is so glad and grateful to be part of the Madeleines team with the lovely folks of Portland Stage! She also designs with Theater at Monmouth, University of Maine Orono School of Performing Arts, Good Theater, and Penobscot Theatre, and has coordinated wardrobe for documentary shoots for Smithsonian Channel and Hulu. Michelle is the blessed mum of Lydia and Ethan, and calls Winthrop, Maine, home. Weston Wilkerson** (Lighting Designer) is thrilled to be back at Portland Stage where he previously designed Sherlock Holmes: The Final Adventure and The Play That Goes Wrong. Additional regional credits include lighting for Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma, Florida Repertory Theatre, Tulsa Opera, Theatre By the Sea, Stages, Alabama Shakespeare Festival, TheatreSquared, City Theatre, Clarence Brown Theatre, and Cumberland County Playhouse. Weston now lives in Fayetteville, Arkansas, with his wife Kim Powers (Set Designer for Madeleines!) and their son Haakon, where he is a teacher at the University of Arkansas. Seth Asa Sengel (Sound Designer) has spent decades making theater with creative souls all over our United States. He is glad to be home in Maine, and at Portland Stage, where he has collaborated on dozens of wonderful productions. A few favorites include Manning, Saint Dad, Sweet Goats and Blueberry Señoritas, The HalfLight, Sex and Other Disturbances, and The Haunting Hour.
