With a season of six Mainstage Shows and a Holiday Show, Portland Stage brings a wide range of performances to Maine. Every Mainstage show is handcrafted in our historic building in the Portland Arts District. Over one season, Portland Stage creates over two hundred live performances and serves 50,000 people from around the state and beyond.

Education is central to Portland Stage’s mission. Vital education programs are offered in schools for students from pre-K through high school, and to children ages 4-18 through classes in our Susie Konkel Theater for Kids storefront space. Portland Stage’s Education Programs provide over 14,000 student experiences each year. PLAY ME A STORY: LIVING ROOM SERIES presented by Portland Stage Theater for Kids allows participants to enjoy dramatic readings of picture books, then participate in an interactive acting workshop with professional theater artists.

Portland Stage is known for its role in cultivating new voices in theater and for creating a significant body of theatrical work that has gone on to success beyond our stage. By incubating new work and supporting writers, Portland Stage has established Maine as a place to launch original and compelling plays. Since its debut in 1990, the Little Festival of the Unexpected (LFU) has established a tradition of nurturing artists, invigorating audiences, and exploring new voices, visions, and forms of theater. Past LFU scripts include Almost, Maine (LFU 2003) and Papermaker (LFU 2014).
Playwright Greg Lam, 2020 Clauder Competition Grand Prize Winner for his play, The Last Ship to Proxima Centauri, soon to be a Portland Stage Mainstage production. Greg’s play was selected to be a part of the 2021 Little Festival of the Unexpected, where it was performed virtually over Zoom for audiences.

Ovations Offstage (O2) creates interactive programming for audiences of all ages. From workshops, masterclasses, and lectures with artists and scholars to community events and School-Time Performances, O2 provides experiences for our communities to deeply engage with the artists and art onstage.

Conversations Join Ovations Offstage in conversation. These community dialogues, inspired by our live performances, bring visiting artists together with Maine’s thought leaders and community members across all disciplines to share knowledge, deeper insight and context. Masterclasses Work with and learn from exceptional artists through our masterclasses. Over a season we offer an array of masterclasses – for the general public or for students studying a specific art form. Pre-Performance Lectures Join Ovations Offstage for an in-depth look at an art form, artist, or performance theme. These presentations contextualize the performance and bring new meaning to the main event.
School-Time Performances Energize and engage your students with the performing arts and artists through onstage school-time matinees, digital offerings and offstage theater activities. Experiences are aligned with Common Core standards and are supported by educator resources and learning guides. Cultivating Curiosity Cultivating Curiosity helps grow young people’s love of books by pairing reading opportunities with School-Time Performances, by providing each child who attends the performance a free book born from its title. Gatherings From a processional performance to shared meals to a walking tour of Portland’s Freedom Trail, Ovations Offstage gathers communities to connect more deeply and locally with the art, artists, and ideas onstage.

Each of us has a limited time in this world to do things that count. In Searching for Mr. Moon, Rich Topol takes us inside his journey as he grapples with mortality, fame, and what it means to be a good father. As we follow Rich’s story, we move through the constantly shifting frame of
Rich’s own life and art and that of his renowned father-inlaw composer, Lukas Foss. From losing his dad at an early age to a subsequent quest to discover what fatherhood means, Rich digs into an often unspoken truth: men are typically praised for their professional prowess rather than their parenting ability. Recent headlines about Pete Buttigieg taking leave of absence from his day job to parent premature twins punctuates how real this issue is today. We all want to matter. We all want to do something meaningful. But what matters most? Our small, consistent, everyday gestures or grand statements? How do we know which will have the most significant impact on the world? Which circles us back to time; how much time do we have to make a difference? Lukas Foss understood the limits of time and worked to keep time at bay. As Rich contemplates fatherhood, family, and his legacy, we too are left to think about the role of the people who surround us and the legacy that we each will leave.

Richard Topol is making his playwriting debut with Searching for Mr. Moon, and he thanks his co-writer Willy for the idea in the first place, and for his patience and sense of humor along the way. As an actor he has previously appeared at Portland Stage in Loot and Scapin. He has performed on Broadway numerous times, including as Lemml in the Tony Award-winning production of Indecent, for which he was nominated for an Outer Critics Circle Award; with Larry David in Fish in the Dark; with Al Pacino in The Merchant of Venice; with Denzel Washington in Julius Caesar; with Mark Ruffalo in the Tony Award-winning revival of Awake and Sing!; with Joe Mantello in the Tony Award-winning revival of The Normal Heart; and with Morgan Freeman and Frances McDormand in The Country Girl, directed by Mike Nichols. His Off-Broadway appearances include productions at the Atlantic, Classic Stage Company, Playwrights Horizons, Manhattan Theatre Club, Lincoln Center, The Public, The Vineyard, and Primary Stages. JULIA GIBSON, DIRECTOR Julia Gibson directed Greater Tuna at Portland Stage several years ago and is very happy to return! She has directed with Rattlestick, Barrow Street, Origin Theatre, Manhattan Theatre Source, and Epic Theatre Ensemble in New York City; and at Chautauqua Theater Company, Gulfshore Playhouse, New London Barn, Juilliard, NYU Graduate Acting, SMU in Dallas, The Actors Center Conservatory, A.C.T. Conservatory in San Francisco, Stony Brook University, and Stella Adler Conservatory. She was Associate Director of the revival of Angels in America at the Signature Theatre. As an actor, she has performed on and off Broadway and at major theaters across the US, as well as on TV and film. She is currently Co-Head of the Graduate Acting Program at UNC Chapel Hill where she also serves as a company member of PlayMakers Repertory Company. She received her MFA in Acting from New York University (alongside Richard Topol) and is a founding member of The Actors Center in New York City and of the National Alliance for Acting Teachers; she is a Fox Fellowship recipient and has narrated over 160 audio books. Julia recently received a Carolina Women’s Center Faculty Scholarship grant to create a theater piece about women and aging.

ABOUT LUKAS FOSS AND ALEATORIC COMPOSITIONS By Meredith G. Healy
Lukas Foss (August 15, 1922-February 1, 2009) was a Germanborn American composer, pianist, and conductor. Foss moved to the US in 1937, and published his first work that same year. At 23, he became the youngest composer to win the prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship. Amongst his most famous compositions are Echoi, Time Cycle, and Baroque Variations. Foss worked as music director and conductor for the Buffalo Philharmonic, the Brooklyn Philharmonia, and the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra. As a composer, he was best known for his experiments with improvisation and aleatory music. Aleatory music, which is also known as chance music, is a style of music in which specific elements of the piece are left for the performer to realize in the moment. Some aleatoric compositions have designated sections with notes about how the improvisation may be performed and for how long. Other pieces allow performers to reorder the structure of the composition or play certain parts of the music simultaneously.
AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL ONE-PERSON SHOWS By Meredith G. Healy
Energy and connection to the audience are components that unite all solo shows, but scripts and performances vary in the types of stories that are told. Some pieces are completely fictional; the playwright creates the characters and circumstances. This is the case for shows like Theresa Rebeck’s Bad Dates and Donnetta Lavinia Grays’s Where We Stand. Solo theater shows can also be autobiographical, as is the case with Searching for Mr. Moon. Eric Trules, who taught a class about solo performance at the University of Southern California, notes that when creating an autobiographical one-person show, “Your vulnerability is your greatest strength.” In Searching for Mr. Moon, Rich Topol takes his lived experience of feeling underprepared for fatherhood, and makes it accessible to an audience that has likely suffered from their own insecurities and feelings of inferiority within their lifetimes. This shared experience is the key element to crafting a piece that will truly resonate with audiences. An autobiographical one-person show invites you to connect with someone whose life might appear dissimilar or foreign on the surface. Even though the specifics of the scenarios might be different, a skilled performer is able to not only invite the audience into their life, but is also able to find moments of kinship that define the universal human experience.

INTERVIEW WITH THE PLAYWRIGHTS & DIRECTOR By Meredith G. Healy
Directing and Dramaturgy Apprentice Meredith G. Healy spoke with actor-playwright Richard Topol, playwright Willy Holtzman, and director Julia Gibson about the creation of Searching for Mr. Moon. Meredith G. Healy: What was the genesis for creating this piece? How long have you been working on it? Richard Topol: I was hired the day before the first preview of the Off-Broadway play Bronx Bombers to replace a famous television star who was playing the lead role, but when the play moved to Broadway I was replaced by a different television star. So, I was really heartbroken. I had been on Broadway before, but this was the lead in a play on Broadway. A regular guy like me doesn’t get a chance to play the lead in a show on Broadway. It was then that Willy approached me about writing a one-man show for me, because he said if he wrote a one-man show for me, I couldn’t be replaced. It would be my show. So, we talked about what could be interesting, and I said, “These are the things that I’m interested in: mortality and how we deal with it, making art and what that means and if that is worthwhile, and then also how I have spent my life on this crazy quest for a father.” Willy Holtzman: I believe in creating theater for specific actors, and protecting them and that work. Once we hit on the general idea, we started talking about what it could be and looking around for subject matter. I suggested writing something about his famous father-in-law, Lukas Foss. Initially we thought about

writing a biographical play about Lukas, and it didn’t quite come together. So, then Rich sent me a text about one of his heart episodes in his own voice, and I read it and said, “Well, that’s the play.” Rich in relation to his father and his father-in-law, but Rich at the core. Meredith G. Healy: What is it like to direct someone in a play about their life? Julia Gibson: It is proving to be helpful to have a pre-existing relationship with Richard. Not just that I know about his life, but that we trust each other. I could imagine that if you don’t know someone very well, it might be awkward to give them a note about how to play themself. Someone might get their feathers ruffled. Rich and I like working together because we trust each other. It’s intimate material, and we respect that, but we also both recognize that we’re at work. We’re making a play.
