ABOUT US Portland Ovations is a nonprofit cultural organization based in Southern Maine dedicated to gathering communities to share in the power of live performance. Ovations connects artists and audiences both onstage and off — making the arts an integral part of community life. Our unique array of live performances for public and school audiences are curated to delight, inspire and educate. Venues used throughout greater Portland include historic and modern theaters, clubs, galleries, and classrooms — chosen carefully to ensure the best possible experience for both audiences and artists. Ovations Offstage Ovations Offstage (O2) creates interactive programming for audiences at all ages and stages of their performing arts exploration. From workshops, masterclasses and lectures with artists and scholars to community events and School-Time Performances, O2 is where artists and audiences connect, creating magical moments that last a lifetime. Masterclasses Work with masterful artists from around the world and learn something new at an O2 workshop, available throughout the season. Masterclasses with select artists can be booked by school and community groups. Pre-Performance Lectures Join us before Mainstage performances for a wide variety of events, including talks, screenings, book clubs and demonstrations that contextualize and bring new meaning to the art and its thematic ties to our community. School-Time Performances Energize and engage students with the performing arts through onstage school-time matinees, in-school workshops and professional development for educators. Experiences are aligned with Common Core standards and are supported by educator resources and learning guides. Cultivating Curiosity Bringing stories to life onstage and in students’ homes and classrooms by providing every young person who attends select School-Time Performances with a free book to take home, along with classroom activities and resources to encourage embodied literacy. Community Events Be on the lookout throughout the season for free events around the area. From walking tours to shared meals to pop-up performances, O2 hosts gatherings that bring visiting art and artists into our vibrant local community.

Portland Stage is known for its role in cultivating new voices in theater and for creating a significant body of theatrical work that has gone on to success beyond our stage. By incubating new work and supporting writers, Portland Stage has established Maine as a place to launch original and compelling plays. Since its debut in 1990, the Little Festival of the Unexpected (LFU) has established a tradition of nurturing artists, invigorating audiences, and exploring new voices, visions, and forms of theater. Past LFU scripts include Almost, Maine (LFU 2003) and Papermaker (LFU 2014).

Playwright Benjamin Benne, 2022 Clauder Competition Grand Prize Winner for his play Manning, soon to be a Mainstage production. Benjamin’s play was selected to be a part of the 2023 Little Festival of the Unexpected, where it was performed for audiences.

Vital education programs are offered in schools for students from pre-K through high school, and to children ages 4-18 through classes in our Susie Konkel Theater for Kids storefront space. When Dickens penned A Christmas Carol, his world was in the midst of a seismic shift. The Industrial Revolution changed the face of London beyond recognition—filling the air with coal smoke and the streets with people searching for employment. As people left rural communities for cities, the old methods of caring for those in need no longer worked. There was no social safety net and thousands were left to fend for themselves. Today, our world faces a similar dilemma but on a global scale. 2 74

Dickens’s response to the crisis was to create Scrooge, the ultimate miser. And through a ghost story along with of a bevy of spirits, Dickens worked to open the old miser’s eyes, and ours, to a world in need of change. The act of bearing witness to humanity is ultimately what transforms Scrooge. From joining Bob Cratchit and his gaggle of children in a meager Christmas dinner and later mourning the loss of Tiny Tim, to remembering the communal joy of an “unnecessary” Fezziwig feast and witnessing people “in misery’s every refuge” taking care of one another. It is by understanding the power of one person to make a difference that we see what is means to be human. As we seek to transform our world, I hope we can find time to understand one another’s stories, and see people in our world community as “fellow passengers to the grave and not another race of creatures bound on less important journeys,” as Nephew Fred proclaims. As we travel with Scrooge on the journey of a lifetime, we watch him discover how much he has lost from his outlook on life and learn just how much he can gain by embracing those around him and working together for a common good. If a man like Scrooge can become a better person, then there is, indeed, hope for us all.

CHARLES DICKENS, PLAYWRIGHT Charles Dickens’ poignant and actionpacked novels lifted him from a lowermiddle-class childhood to become an international celebrity of the Victorian era, and they remain popular today. Still, in book after book, from Oliver Twist to Great Expectations, he remained true to his roots: calling attention to hypocrisy, injustice, and the plight of the poorest among us.

MICHAEL DIX THOMAS, DIRECTOR Michael Dix Thomas is an educator, director, and actor, whose theatrical career began as a teenager here in Portland, Maine. Michael has acted and directed from Maine to North Carolina with Shakespeare Theatre Company (DC), Folger Theatre (DC), The Kennedy Center (DC), Shakespeare & Company (MA), Alchemical Theatre (NC), Dartmouth College (NH), Keene State College (NH), The Theater at Monmouth (ME), Maddy’s Theatre at the Children’s Museum & Theatre of Maine, and here at Portland Stage. As an actor, Michael has appeared in four Portland Stage productions: The Sisters Rosensweig, Ben Butler, and two previous renditions of A Christmas Carol. When he is not directing on the Mainstage, Michael is the Education Director at Portland Stage. He is responsible for creating and executing Portland Stage’s education programming, which includes classes, camps, student matinees of Mainstage productions, and performance and workshop series that tour to schools across Maine. Michael is a co-founder of PortFringe, Maine’s fringe theater festival, and the now-defunct Lorem Ipsum Theater Collective. Michael is a graduate of Emerson College and the Shakespeare Theatre Company Academy at the George Washington University. Michael would like to extend his deep gratitude to Anita for her trust; Myles for his knowledge; Anita, Sally, and many others for their years of work on this script; and the entire cast, crew, and design team for investing so much care, hard work, and time into bringing this story to life. AN INTERVIEW WITH THE DIRECTOR MICHAEL DIX THOMAS By: Julia Jennings

Directing and Dramaturgy Apprentice Julia Jennings sat down with Michael Dix Thomas, director of A Christmas Carol and Portland Stage’s Education Director, to chat about this timeless play. Julia Jennings (JJ): How would you say this year’s A Christmas Carol is different from years past? Michael Dix Thomas (MDT): I feel like for me, I’m thinking about it differently than I ever have in previous adaptations and productions that I’ve seen—our stage show and also film versions. I have always felt—and this was clarifying, actually, in a conversation I had with our literary manager, Todd Brian Backus— that I have always seen Scrooge as kind of a faceless evil stand-in for something, for someone else: insert whatever malevolent, wealthy person. And in working my way back through the show, that felt less like it resonated with me personally than seeing Scrooge as an example of what happens when we shut ourselves off from the world. And instead of taking the show to say, “Well, if only these three ghosts came to this particular person, the world would be better,” saying how do we encourage folks to find that part of themselves that is like Scrooge—that part of themselves that they have shut off from the world, that part of themselves that they’ve closed down for whatever reason, and that they can encourage to open up. So where do you find that Scrooge in yourself? We’ll see how different that is in production, but it’s certainly shifted the way that I am thinking about the play from how I’ve thought about the story in the past. JJ: What do you most want the audience to take away from this show? And also, why do you feel it’s important to tell this story now? MDT: I mean, we talk about the timelessness of this story, and I think for me, it keeps coming back to this idea that we will always, for innumerable, excellent reasons, be closing parts of ourselves off in response to things that we’ve experienced, in response to things that are happening in the world. I think we need the constant reminder to open ourselves up and see each other as fellow humans. I think that that’s always something we need to be reminded of. There’s a charity man and charity woman in our production who are collecting donations at the beginning of the story. And one of them has a line about how we do that

PLAYNOTES PERSPECTIVES this time of year because it is a time “...when want is keenly felt and abundance rejoices.” And I think that in Maine, now, as it gets colder, we see more acutely the experience of those who are unhoused, those who don’t have enough to eat. It’s hard to move around Portland right now and not notice this happening in the world around us. And at the same time, so many of us are lucky, privileged enough to be gathering with family and creating an abundance of food and comfort for ourselves. And I think it is that reason that this story is placed at this time of year, that this story is brought back this time of year, that we see these things side by side. And how do we open up now? How do those of us who recognize that we have more than we need—how do we find ways to share that and give to those who have less? JJ: What else do you want audiences to know about your work with the show? MDT: I’m really excited for audiences to see it. I think that in some exciting ways, this is going to be a different production of A Christmas Carol than we’ve previously staged, which is fun for me. We’re trying some things and I’m really interested to see what those look like and feel like in front of an audience. So I hope Paige Scala, Ensemble Member & Michael Dix Thomas people come and see the show, and I hope they tell me what they thought about it because I can’t wait to find out if we were successful in these moments.

Grace Bauer* (Mrs. Cratchit) is a Canadian-American actor based in Maine. She is an Artistic Associate at Portland Stage, where she appeared in the world premieres of Senior Living and Read to Me. Recent credits include: Fireflies, Who’s Holiday, You Can’t Take It With You, Homer Bound, and A Comedy of Tenors (Good Theater). At Rep Stage in Columbia, Maryland, she originated the roles of Etta Cone in All She Must Possess and Susan in Technicolor Life, played Amanda in The Glass Menagerie, and sang poorly as Florence Foster Jenkins in Souvenir. Other favorites: The Importance of Being Earnest (Portland Stage); Other Desert Cities, Trevor (Mad Horse); Three Sisters (Fenix); Blithe Spirit, Our Town (Theater at Monmouth). CENTERSPREAD TOPICS DICKENS’ UNIVERSAL MESSAGE By Julia Jennings

In Boston, Dickens met with Ralph Waldo Emerson, William Ellery Channing, and other leading figures of the American Unitarian movement, a visit which Dickens praised in his American Notes. Not long after returning to London, Dickens officially joined the Unitarian Church, writing, “I have carried into effect an old idea of mine, and joined the Unitarians, who would do something for human improvement, if they could; and who practice Charity and Toleration.” Dickens wrote A Christmas Carol soon after, believing he could use his fiction for social good. Indeed, the novella significantly reshaped our modern understanding of Christmas, aligning the holiday with supporting and giving to those in need within our communities. While Scrooge’s own conversion seems to mirror Dickens’ experience with the Unitarians, Tiny Tim’s cry of “God bless us, every one” at the end of the story appears to reach beyond any denominational understanding of redemption, and embraces the universal message of community care and altruism.

FICTION FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE By Dylan Gurrera

Much of Dickens’ work satirized English society, criticized the underbelly of capitalism and the Industrial Revolution, and exposed society’s maltreatment of the economically disadvantaged. For example, Dickens’ later novel Little Dorrit (published serially between 1855 and 1887) is set in the prison where Dickens’ own father was imprisoned for debt. The novel satirized the shortcomings of debtors’ prisons, the lack of concern for laborers’ safety, and the Victorian government. These novels exemplify an author who didn’t shut the world out of his fiction, choosing to challenge what he saw in his world. His popularity and readership show that the world didn’t shut out his criticisms, either. His work not only moved his readers; his sharp social criticisms changed English society. Dickens’ novels exposed the underworld of industrial progress, and gave words to the exploited laborer’s lived experience. His novels swayed public opinion so sharply that his descriptions of Marshalsea and the Fleet Prisons in Little Dorrit and The Pickwick Papers caused these debtors’ prisons to be shut down. Charles Dickens even won the appeal of Karl Marx, one of the more famous denouncers of capitalism, who stated that: “[Dickens]...issued to the world more political and social truths than have been uttered by all the professional politicians, publicists, and moralists put together...”

ENSEMBLE BIOGRAPHIES

Finnegan Bailey is a 7th grade student at Gorham Middle School. He loves acting and has been in Sleepy Hollow, Jingle All the Way, and the SpongeBob SquarePants Musical at the Schoolhouse Arts Center, and Beauty and the Beast at Gorham Middle School. Finn also likes playing drums, listening to heavy metal, and making horror films. Seamus Bailey is a 9th grade student at Gorham High School. This is his second time performing in A Christmas Carol at Portland Stage. He has previously appeared in the SpongeBob SquarePants Musical at the Schoolhouse Arts Center, several shows at Gorham Community Arts Center, and three productions at the Gorham Middle School. Shay also enjoys running on the cross country team and playing video games. Annabelle Beam (she/her) is in 7th grade at Lincoln Middle School. This is her first performance at Portland Stage. She is thrilled to be a part of A Christmas Carol. She has enjoyed acting since second grade and has appeared in multiple productions at Maddy’s Theatre. She played Saoirse in Lost Seal Skin, the Harp in Jack and Phil, and Elliot in Snow in the Jungle/Nieve en la jungla. She enjoys acting, singing, dancing, and reading.

Seraphina Beasley is an actor, singer, writer, and reading enthusiast. Seraphina began her acting journey at Tift Theatre in Georgia at the age of 4 when she was cast in Shrek the Musical, Jr. Seraphina has performed in a number of plays at Maddy’s Theatre and STAGES Youth Theater. In her spare time, Seraphina loves exploring the shelves of local bookshops throughout Portland, writing, reading, and playing Zelda and Mario Kart with her two sisters. Seraphina is excited to bring A Christmas Carol to life at Portland Stage this year. Evangeline Cambria is a teen actor, singer, and Greek mythology enthusiast. Evangeline began her acting journey at Tift Theatre in Georgia at the age of 7 when she was cast in Shrek the Musical, Jr. Since then, Evangeline has seen many Broadway shows that have only increased her love of theater. Her favorite shows so far are Hadestown and Sweeney Todd. Evangeline has performed in a number of plays at Maddy’s Theatre and STAGES Youth Theatre. In her spare time, Evangeline enjoys embroidery, reading, and piano. Evangeline is excited to perform in A Christmas Carol this year at Portland Stage.

Clementine Enright is an 8th grader at Lincoln Middle School. This is their first Portland Stage production, but they have been doing camps at Portland Stage for many years, and are an avid member of their school’s drama club. When Clementine isn’t pretending to be a Victorian child, you can find them struggling to read college history textbooks, overanalyzing sitcoms, and listening to their favorite bands, Queen and Tally Hall, at probably hazardous volumes. They love National Public Radio, blustery weather, and anise-flavored cookies. Lily Jessen is in 10th grade and is thrilled to be part of A Christmas Carol at Portland Stage for the first time this year! She has been a regular face in the Portland Stage’s Teen Shakespeare Group since 2020, and has also done productions with STAGES Youth Theater and Lyric Music Theater. Most recently, she played Olivia in Twelfth Night with Portland Stage and Miss Honey in Matilda at STAGES. When she isn’t on stage, you can find her writing stories and poetry, curled up with a book, or singing with her chorus. She hopes you enjoy the show! Clarence Kennedy (aka Charley) is a 4th grader at Lyseth Elementary in Portland where they live with their mom (who inspired them to try acting), dad, and big brother, Tucker, who is also in the show. Charley loves spending time with their dog, Bernie, playing drums, and reading conflict history books. In their spare time, they love being outside (winter is their favorite season) or relaxing with their iPad. Charley looks forward to doing more shows with Portland Stage in the future! Anna Levangie is a 6th grader at Frank H. Harrison Middle School in Yarmouth. She is very excited to perform in her first production with Portland Stage, and her first official production ever! She became a part of the Portland Stage community through its summer programming, and felt so at home that she’s joined every activity Portland Stage has put on since then. Anna loves to write (especially in the horror genre), and spends her time at home with her dog and three cats, or outside with other wild animals.

ENSEMBLE BIOGRAPHIES Soph Maillet is so excited to be performing in A Christmas Carol! This is her first production with Portland Stage. Prior to this, she has performed with the Children’s Museum and Theatre of Maine, and she participates in her school’s theater and chorus program. In her free time, she enjoys playing Dungeons & Dragons and hanging out with her two cats Washburne and Zoë. Una Mayer is a 4th grader at the East End Elementary School and this is her first production at Portland Stage. Outside of acting, Una enjoys going to the theater, dance class, drawing, hanging out with her cats Kiki and Boba, and watching movies and Stranger Things. She loves New York City, cold plunging, summer camp, Dungeons & Dragons, and making stuff. She is very excited to be a part of A Christmas Carol this year. Abigail McCrillis has always had an affinity for A Christmas Carol and is delighted that it is her first show with Portland Stage! She’s a writer, traveler, D&D enthusiast, artist, runner, and an avid reader. She attends Gorham Middle School. Abby enjoys the experience and growth theater allows and finds that performing can be a great way to learn. Most recently appearing as Mrs. Potts in GMS’ production of Beauty and the Beast, she can often be found practicing her saxophone as her dog sings along, or reading The Lord of the Rings with her cat and a spot of tea. Reilly McGovern-Pizzi is an 8th grader at Cape Elizabeth Middle School. She is thrilled to be back for her second holiday show since It’s a Wonderful Life in 2019. Reilly also enjoys dancing at Casco Bay Movers and performing with Portland Youth Dance. She is grateful to her family and friends for their love and support. She hopes you enjoy the show! Tanner Pines is a 7th grader at Falmouth Middle. Tanner has appeared most recently as Ralph True in Stroll Haunted Yarmouth through Royal River Community Players, and has appeared in several summer camp productions, most recently The Addams Family Musical as Pugsley. Prior experiences include the lead role of Jack in Jack and Phil and Leroy in Dragons Love Tacos, both at Maddy’s Theatre. Tanner loves his friends, loves to perform, enjoys going to the beach, video games and board games, tennis, and playing with his golden retriever, Paddington. Isla Rutherford is an 8th grader at Gorham Middle School. This is her first show with Portland Stage, and she is very excited to be a part of it. In her free time, she enjoys reading, singing, and hanging out with friends and family. She plays ukulele and soccer. She has been doing theater since she was seven years old, and A Christmas Carol will be her 7th show. She hopes you enjoy the show! Paige Scala is excited to be back for her sixth and final year performing in the Christmas show at Portland Stage! She is a senior at Casco Bay High School and is preparing for college where she intends to continue her acting journey in her free time. Paige has been in numerous local and school productions and some of her favorite characters to play have been Tiny Tim in A Christmas Carol and Demeter in Cats. She hopes you enjoy the show! Delia Shambaugh is a 7th grader at Cape Elizabeth Middle School and is thrilled to be a part of this year’s performance of A Christmas Carol. Delia loves singing with her school chorus, learning to play the ukulele, swimming, hanging out with her dog Seggie and brother Way, and having fun outdoors. She’s enjoyed time with STAGES and Portland Stage enrichment over the years and is very excited to finally be in her first big production! Tucker Wood is a freshman at Portland High who has done these amazing Christmas plays for six whole years. He loves acting and writing, and he loves space and going on thrill rides! He has lots of acting experience. He has one dog and one cat and a little brother named Charley, who is 9 and plays Tiny Tim. He cannot wait to do more shows in the future and keep on pursuing acting!

ARTISTIC & PRODUCTION BIOS Anita Stewart** (Scenic Designer) has worked as a set and costume designer at leading theaters across the country, including the Guthrie, Seattle Rep, Canadian Opera Company, Minnesota Opera, A.R.T., Steppenwolf, Hartford Stage, Dallas Theater Center, Long Wharf Theatre, New York Theatre Workshop, Boise Contemporary Theater, New Jersey Shakespeare, and Portland Stage. Anita’s desire to play a meaningful role as an artist in a specific community brought her to Portland Stage as Artistic Director, a company for which she had previously done significant freelance design. Anita holds an MFA in Design from the Yale School of Drama. Kathleen Payton Brown (Costume Coordinator) has designed costumes for many shows at Portland Stage. Most recently: Smoke on the Mountain; Perseverance; Talley’s Folly; Almost, Maine; It’s a Wonderful Life; Ain’t Misbehavin’; Skeleton Crew; and The Half-Light. Favorite designs: Red Herring, Lost Boy Found at Whole Foods, The Hound of the Baskervilles, Dancing at Lughnasa, Red, Love/Sick, and Hidden Tennessee.
