Welcome to American Idiot!

Some shows arrive at exactly the right moment. More than twenty years after Green Day released the groundbreaking album that inspired this musical, its themes of searching for purpose, questioning the world around us, and finding connection in uncertain times remain remarkably relevant.

I have a confession to make: before we selected this season’s lineup, I had never seen American Idiot! As I learned more about the show, however, I discovered that it is far more than a collection of songs from a beloved rock band. It is a powerful story about young people navigating adulthood, identity, friendship, loss, and hope while trying to find their place in a rapidly changing world.

One of the things I love most about community theater is its ability to introduce us to stories we might not seek out on our own. Whether you’re a lifelong Green Day fan who knows every lyric or someone experiencing this musical for the first time—as I am—this production offers an opportunity to see familiar themes through a new lens.

Bringing a show like American Idiot! to our stage takes tremendous dedication, creativity, and courage. My heartfelt thanks go to our very talented cast, crew, production team and band for embracing the energy and emotional depth of this remarkable piece. Their passion and commitment have transformed this theater into a place where music, storytelling, and human connection come together in unforgettable ways.

Thank you for joining us for American Idiot!

This show was not on my radar until early last year. Of course, I’d listened to Green Day before and was familiar with their music. The real treat was diving into this heavy and layered story of growth, society, and the trials and tribulations of passionate young individuals. This is a show that welcomes folks as they are, and embraces and cherishes the ideals and perspectives of those who yearn for a better tomorrow and understand that frustration and rage are sacred to growth and change. There was truly no better time for this show to come around than this exact moment.

American Idiot takes us back to the early 2000’s era of disillusion while simultaneously grounding us in the volatile discourse of the present day. The current dialogue surrounding social media, artificial intelligence and the political landscape is frighteningly relevant to this material. There is nostalgia in the music and characters, but there’s also an unshakable feeling of resonance in the words and music of this land of make believe that jolts us back to the present.

I could not have asked for a better group of performers, artists, and technicians to collaborate with on bringing this story and environment to life. It has been such a joy to watch them ask important questions and bring their own passion and care to this difficult material. I am eternally grateful to The Portland Players for allowing me to play a part in telling this story, along with the most incredible company that a director could ask for.

AMERICAN IDIOT

BILLIE JOE ARMSTRONG, frontman of the rock band Green Day, came of age in the underground punk scene in Berkeley. Green Day’s albums include 1039/ Smooth Out Slappy Hours; Kerplunk; 1994’s Dookie, which sold 15 million copies and garnered their first Grammy (and inspired a raft of imitators); Insomniac; Nimrod; Warning; 2004’s landmark American Idiot, which debuted at #1 on the Billboard chart, spawned five hit singles, and earned seven Grammy nominations (winning two, including Best Rock Album); 21st Century Breakdown (Grammy Award, Best Rock Album); and 2012’s consecutively released ¡Uno!, ¡Dos!, and ¡Tré! (as well as the behind the scenes DVD,¡Cuatro!). Last year, Armstrong and Norah Jones released Foreverly, a tribute to the Everly Brothers’ 1958 Songs Our Daddy Taught Us.The Tony and Grammy winning musical American Idiot, featuring lyrics by Armstrong, music by Green Day, and a book written by Armstrong and director Michael Mayer, opened on Broadway in 2010. Throughout its run, he made cameo appearances in the role of St. Jimmy. The recent documentary, Broadway Idiot, chronicles his road to the Great White Way. Armstrong also composed the music for These Paper Bullets currently being staged at the Yale Repertory Theatre. AUTHORS & CREATORS

TOM KITT is a two-time Tony, two-time Emmy, Pulitzer Prize and Grammy Award winner. As a musical theater composer, he has written the music for six Broadway shows: Next to Normal (Tony Award, Olivier Nomination), If/Then (Tony Nomination), Almost Famous (Tony Nomination), Flying Over Sunset (Tony Nomination), High Fidelity, and Bring it On, The Musical. His work for the stage has also been seen Off Broadway at Second Stage (Next to Normal, Superhero), The Public Theater (The Visitor, Shakespeare in the Park) and he has worked at some of the most prestigious regional theaters including The Old Globe, Arena Stage, Berkeley Rep, The Signature Theater, and ART. In addition, Tom’s Broadway credits as an orchestrator include: Next to Normal (Tony Award), Hell’s Kitchen (Tony Nomination), The SpongeBob Musical (Tony Nomination), Jagged Little Pill (Tony Nomination), Almost Famous, Head Over Heels, Everyday Rapture, and American Idiot. Tom has also been active in the world of film and TV. As one of the vocal arrangers working on the Pitch Perfect films, Tom most notably helped create the classic “Riff-off.” Tom also served as music supervisor/arranger/ orchestrator for Grease Live, and contributed songs for Royal Pains, Penny Dreadful, and Sesame Street. He also provided music supervision for the NBC series, Rise and served as a Supervising Music Producer on the Bobby Lopez/ Kristen Anderson-Lopez/Steven Levenson/Thomas Kail musical television series Up Here. And he is known for his three original opening numbers for The Tony Awards, “This Party’s for You” in 2024, written with Amanda Green for Ariana Debose, “Live” in 2019, written with David Javerbaum for James Corden, and the Emmy Award winning “Bigger” in 2013, written with Lin-Manuel Miranda for Neil Patrick Harris. Tom is also proud that his musical adaptation of Freaky Friday, co-written with Bridget Carpenter and Brian Yorkey was turned into an original movie musical for Disney Channel. Tom is a Sony Masterworks artist, with whom he recorded his debut album, Reflect in 2021.

Andrew Bennington (he/him)Andrew/Ensemble

Is absolutely ecstatic to be making his Portland Players debut! Previously, you may have seen him as Hector MacQueen in Murder on the Orient Express (Biddeford City Theater) or as Mr. Gardiner in Pride & Prejudice (Lyric Music Theater). He would like to thank director Caleb for this opportunity, his wife for her steadfast support, the cast and crew for all their hard work, and you — yes, you! — for seeing the show.

Em Digati (they/them) - Favorite Son/ Joshua

Em is so excited to be part of this awesome cast and crew! When not performing or singing with local choirs, they can be found practicing rollerskating, or consuming the writings of their favorite punk, Margaret Killjoy. This is their drag king debut! Gratitude to the production team, my friends, and the queer community for helping me dream this into being. Happy pride!

Sarah Nam Gallagher (she/her)Libby/Ensemble

Is so grateful to be a part of this amazing cast! From Brattleboro, Vermont, where she performed and studied at New England Youth Theater. She moved to Maine for college and returned to theater in Portland Players’ production of Annie in December 2025. Favorite roles include Cinderella’s Mother in Into the Woods and Gabriela in High School Musical. She would like to thank the cast, crew, and her friends and family for all their hard work and support!

Campbell (Cami) Gibson (she/her)Leslie/Ensemble

Is a performer/director/theatre educator in the Portland area holding a B.A. in Theatre and minor in Dance from the University of Southern Maine. So excited to be a part of her second show at Portland Players! She recently played Lily St. Regis in Annie. Favorite roles include: Ariel Moore in Footloose, Bard Babe in Something Rotten, and Bianca in The Taming of the Shrew. She would like to thank her friends, family, and partner Collin for their endless love and support!

Liz Kershenbaum (she/her) - Alysha/ Ensemble

Is beyond excited and honored to be a part of this dream show! Previously at Players: Ensemble, Dogfight. Is a local actor/videographer/ photographer, he is thrilled to return to Portland Players after a 3 year hiatus! His last show on the Players stage was Spamalot! where he played The Historian/Not Dead Fred/Prince Herbert. Other shows he’s been a part of include The Full Monty and We Will

Derek Kingsley (he/him) - Ensemble (Miguel)

Last performed on the Players stage in Reefer Madness in 2022; since then you may have seen him at Lyric Music Theater, Biddeford City Theater, or Good Theater. He stars in the Mainemade indie feature 43 Degrees North, streaming on Amazon, and voice-acts & directs for Broken Arts Entertainment, including the lead in the spy-comedy audio series Justin Thyme. A former SF Bay Area resident, he saw the original American Idiot at Berkeley Rep.

Joe Lambert (he/him) - Theo

It’s been a while, but Joe is happy to be back on stage at Portland Players! While it’s been a few years since playing Fector/Big Tony in Dogfight here, he has stayed busy. Favorites from this stretch include Gomez Addams in The Addams Family, Robert Lambert in Boeing Boeing, Ali Hakim in Oklahoma!, and Nick Bottom in Something Rotten. Joe is relishing the opportunity to rock out for a change and hopes you don’t hurt your neck too badly when you start headbanging!

Grace Leach (she/her) - Whatsername

She is a 19 year old student attending Southern Maine Community College. This is her first production at Portland Players, and her first ever musical. After countless years of dancing and recreational singing, she is more than excited to be taking the stage with

such a talented cast and fantastic crew. She hopes you enjoy this immersive production of American Idiot!

Lucas Mayo - Johnny

He is absolutely honored to be apart of this amazing show with this wonderful cast. This is his first production with Portland Players but you may have seen him as Robbie Hart in The Wedding Singer or Tommy Ross in Carrie the Musical. He hopes you sit back, relax, and enjoy this amazing production of American Idiot!

Hannah Mellecker (she/her) - Chase/ Ensemble

Is an engineer based in Portland, thrilled and honored to be on stage in American Idiot — her first performance after a 10-year hiatus. She has assisted with sets for previous Portland Players productions, including Fun Home, Anything Goes, Annie, and Macbeth. She would like to thank the cast and crew for their hard work and her dear friend Lindsey, who has gone with her to see nearly every Portland Players show since she moved to Maine in 2021. Matt Nickerson - Declan/Ensemble

This is my first performance with The Portland Players and my first time back on stage since 2018. I’m incredibly grateful to be part of such a kind and talented cast and crew, and I sincerely appreciate everyone who has come out to support the show!

Noah Paradis (he/him) - Tunny

Is so elated to return to musical theater after a 14 year hiatus! Got his start in 2008 as Schroeder in You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown and went on to join STAGES Youth Theater, performing in Les Misérables and West Side Story Notable past roles include Anthony in Sweeney Todd, Radames in Aida, and Seymour in Little Shop of Horrors. Hailing from Scarborough, he was an active member of the Maine Allstate Choir and President of UVM Top Cats Acapella.

Sarah Rinaldi Kennedy (she/her)Extraordinary Girl

Is thrilled for you to see this production of American Idiot! Favorite past shows include: RENT (Mimi), The Wedding Singer (Linda), Into the Woods (Lucinda), and It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play (Sally Applewhite/ Mary Hatch). In her time away from the theater, Sarah works as a nurse at The Barron Center and as a server at DiMillo’s on the Water. This is her first show sharing the stage with her husband. The love and support of her family and friends mean the world!

Rachael Schuster (they/she) - Ben Thanks, Players, for the warm welcome! Roles include Mitch Mahoney in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee and Vinnie Morelli in Murdering the Mob (Waldo Theatre); Lydia and Jane Bennet in Pride and Prejudice (River Company); Zee in Faust in the Anthropocene (Snowlion Repertory Company); Mary Bennet in Pride and Prejudice (Heartwood Theater); and Iago in Othello (Salem State University). Jeffrey Servetas (he/him) - Brian/ Ensemble

Is extremely grateful to be returning to the Portland Players stage. Past local roles include Macduff in Macbeth (Portland Players, 2026), Thomas Nostradamus in Something Rotten (Lyric Music Theater, 2025), and Clown 1 in The 39 Steps (Out There Theater, 2024). When not on stage, he works at IDEXX Labs in Westbrook and spends time with his partner and their herd of animals. Many thanks to the production team, castmates, and you for coming to see the show!

Olivia (Livi) Vail (she/her) - Heather

A 26 year old from Portland, Maine, beyond excited to make her Portland Players debut! A singer and dancer who has spent the last year making her return to theater. Recent credits include ensemble in Cinderella, ensemble in The Secret Garden (City Theater), and Glory in Almost, Maine (Schoolhouse Arts Center). She would like to thank her family and friends for encouraging her to step back onto the stage, and she hopes to see you all rocking out to the show!

Nathan Whewell (he/him) - Will

Is excited to be making his stage debut in American Idiot. He has been a musician since he was 13 and, much like Will, has spent much of his time at home — writing and recording as a self-taught

bedroom musician. This production marks his first experience in theater, and he’s grateful for the opportunity. He’s especially excited to be part of such a dedicated and talented cast.

PRODUCTION TEAM

Caleb Eugley (he/him) - Director

Has worked as a theater artist with numerous organizations throughout New England, performing locally at RRCP, Lyric Music Theater, Maddy’s Theatre, Portland Players, and Mad Horse Theater. American Idiot is his first full-scale directing project in the area, with previous credits including Calvin Berger, The Cake, These Shining Lives, Antigone, and Tuck Everlasting. Up next: Sunday in the Park with George at Lyric Music Theater next February. Immense gratitude and love to this entire cast & crew!

Isaac Martel - Assistant Director

Is beyond excited to make his return to The Portland Players in his assistant directorial debut. Some recent and favorite credits include Rent (The Man and Restaurant Man) and Legally Blonde (Nikos) at The Portland Players; Little Women (John Brooke) at Arts in Motion Theater Company; The Tempest (Ferdinand) with Peaks Island Players; and The Prom (Ensemble), A Christmas Carol (Ensemble), and Something Rotten! (Nigel) at Lyric Theater. He also originated the roles of Jay in Anxiety: The Musical and Calvin in Camazotz: The Concert Experience with New River Performing Arts, and music directed The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical at Cheverus High School.

Emma Tompkins (she/her)Choreographer

Is a local choreographer & performing artist working throughout New England, thrilled to help bring the Green Day musical to life! Latest works include Stellaluna with Maddy’s Theater; Next to Normal, Something Rotten, and SpongeBob with Lyric Music Theater. Favorite roles onstage include Jordan Baker in The Great Gatsby, Young Eva in And Then They Came For Me, and Chutney in Legally Blonde. Her next project will be choreographing Finding Nemo with Maddy’s Theater.

Michael Varno - Music Director/ Accompanist

Is thrilled to be a part of his first Portland Players production! With credits on stage as Shrek (twice), Tony in West Side Story, and Jack in Into the Woods, and off stage music directing A Christmas Story, Hadestown Teen Edition, and Stellaluna, Michael always finds himself at the theatre — and wouldn’t have it any other way! When not working on a show, he is a Teacher of the Deaf with MECDHH. Thank you cast and crew for your impressive hard work and dedication. Thank you, Clarissa, for your unwavering support.

Giselle (Gigi) Paquette - Producer

Gigi is excited to help bring American Idiot to the Portland Players stage. Having studied, taught, performed, and choreographed throughout New England for many years, she has worn many hats at Portland Players, including performer, choreographer, director, producer, and mentor. Gigi currently serves as Vice President of Artistic Development and

Alexandra Garbeck (she/her) - Stage Manager

Is thrilled to work with Caleb on this exciting production. Most recently (not) seen as Stage Manager for Macbeth and projection op for Anastasia (Lyric). She serves on the Portland Players board as VP of Production and cannot wait for y’all to see the rocking 2026–27 season ahead! Many thanks to the amazing cast and production team, and so much love and respect to the stage ninja and tech crews — without whom this, or any, show would not be possible.

Amanda Holbrook (they/them)Costume Design

Is so thrilled to be returning to Portland Players to costume this rocking production! They would like to send many thanks to the actors and production team who have made this a wonderful experience, as well as the many loved ones who have supported them during this process — including (but not limited to!) Cadie, Claire, Proph, Molly, Jack, Karisa, Emmaline, and their amazing assistant/forever rock girl Camilla!

Ashley McBreairty (she/her)Lighting Designer

Is an award-winning lighting designer with over 100 credits to her name, working in theater since she was four. She graduated from the University of Southern Maine with degrees in Theater and Psychology, and recently returned to

USM as faculty — designing, teaching, and inspiring the next generation of theater creators. Always excited for a new challenge, she is thrilled to take on mashing a concert with theatrical flair, bringing punk rock right to your favorite local theater.

Hollie Pryor (she/her) - Intimacy Coordinator

Is program Director at STAGES Youth Theater, where she designs and directs plays and musicals for ages 0–17. Outside of STAGES, she is a director, designer, playwright, actor, and intimacy coordinator. Next up: directing Frozen: The Musical at Portland Players in 2027. So grateful to Caleb and the American Idiot team for bringing her on, and she hopes you enjoy the show!

Adam O’Connor - Set Designer

Is a former professional carpenter, current code enforcement officer, and forever theater kid. Previous set builds include Portland Players’ productions of The Great Gatsby, The Full Monty, and Spamalot. Additionally, he has designed sets for Lyric Theater’s A Christmas Carol and Out There Theater Company’s The 39 Steps. He would like to thank his beautiful wife for her continued support and to apologize for tracking in so much sawdust over the years.

Bailey Sheats (she/her) - Props

Has been involved with many shows at Portland Players and Lyric Music Theater over the years, both on stage and behind the scenes. Some favorites include The Bridges of Madison County and Young Frankenstein. When not at

Justin Norton (he/him) - Sound Designer/Board Op

Is happy to be back at Portland Players! Previous shows at Players include Mary Poppins, Into the Woods, Anything Goes, and Little Women. When not here, you’ll find him around town running sound and video for Headlight Audio Visual.

Chris Kennedy - Guitar 1

Is extremely happy to be playing in the pit for the first time. As someone who grew up with Green Day, it means the world to perform on stage with such a talented cast — and a very Extraordinary Girl. (A.K.A. his wife.)

Brendan Daly (he/him) - Percussion

Has been playing drums since 2002, which coincidentally was the year he saw Green Day live on the Pop Disaster Tour.

Emilia Toth (she/her) - Violin

Has been a violinist for 16 years and began her studies in Nashville, Tennessee. Now a proud New Englander, she received a Minor in Music from the University of Southern Maine, performs with the Southern Maine Symphony Orchestra, and joined the pit orchestra for Lyric Music Theater’s production of Anastasia: The Musical. So excited to join the Portland Players for this production!

Darien Drouin - Guitar 2 Darien is a self-taught musician from Portland and is excited for his first performance in the pit band. Outside of music, he enjoys coding, riding motorcycles, and spending time with his partner, Kiah, and their sweet cat, Nellie.
