Tenney, which engaged in this trade.Onatleastonevoyagehe wasaccompaniedbyhiswifeand daughter,mywifeâsgrandmother, andwehaveseveralartifactsfrom thisvoyagetoShanghaiincluding oilpaintingsoftheshipandhis daughter, painted by some unÂŹ known Chinese artist who preÂŹ sumablyfashionedacareerfrom suchendeavorsforvisitorsfrom abroad.SomeexamplesofOrienÂŹ talporcelainhavealsosurvived, thoughmostarenickedbecause, asthefamilystorygoes,damaged

The Yorktown Shoe Company, ahugebrickfactoryatthe edgeoftheKennebecRiverin Gardiner, was booming, and whynot?Itwastheroaring 1920s, and Yorktown owner Robert P. Hazzard had spent many a long nightassuringthathisshoeshada nationaldistribution. Heneededachangeofscenery. Maybe it was the monotonous row afterrowofredbrickthathefaced everyday,orthegrimy,greenishbrownwoodcorridorsthatendlessly woundtheirwaythroughthefactory, ormaybeitwasjustthetenorofthe times,butMr.Hazzardâstastein architecturetookanabruptturn.

In1926hecommissionedPortland architectJohnCalvinStevenstoplan asummercottageonhispropertyat GrandBeachinOldOrchard.NeighÂŹ borslookedforwardtotheconstrucÂŹ tion as the mansion beganâthey picturedalargeShingleStyleor maybeastatelyColonialRevivalâ butweretheyinforasurprise.
TheMediterraneanorthePacific wouldhavebeenanaturalsettingfor aSpanishvillaoraMissionestate overlookingthesea,butin1926,a Spanishvillaoverlookingstately BlackPointacrosstheAtlanticwas somethingofashocktothenatives, withitsstuccosidesandgreen-tiled hippedroof.

Andsoitbracedthecontroversy andstoodproudly,perfectlystilland unbending,inthefaceofasnorting, ragingnorâeaster.Itpeacockedfor thetourists,infullcoloranddignified character,throughthesummerheat. Itbeamedeversosubtlyasitheard the sounds of children laughing, splashing,andswimminginthesumÂŹ merocean.
âStevenswasabletoincorporate oneofhisfavoritearchitecturallines, agable-roofedbay,onthesouthwest cornerofthehouse.Heextendeda one-storyhip-roofed portecochere fromthebaytomarkthemainenÂŹ trance.

room.Intricateironworksurrounds thearchesofthehallway,theliving room,anddiningroom.Thewallsare stuccoedandexposedbeamsfinish theceilingsintheocean-facingliving anddiningrooms.Upstairsarefive bedroomsandasleepingporch,all originallyfurnishedwithappropriate SpanishRevivalpieces.â
Alotoftimeandtidehaspassed sincethecompletionofthevilla. Somepeopleintheareastillreferto itastheHazzardCottage;otherscall ittheSnowEstate,andstillothers callittheDantonMansion-dependÂŹ ingontheirgeneration.Itwasowned by the once-famous Snowâs Clam Chowderfamilyandeventuallysold to Judge Nicholas Danton and his wife,Frances.Theirson,WilliamDanÂŹ ton,developeroftheadjacentDanÂŹ tonTowers,livestheretodaywith hisfamily.

Chris,myUniversityofMaineat Orono roommate, was a theater majorandhadlandedhisfirstbig roleinacampusproductionof, âSexualPerversityinChicago.â Granted,hewasalittleroughto beginwith-aJerseynative,mind youâbut apparently not enough tosatisfythedirectororthepart heâdwon.Hefelthehadtodig deeperwithinhimselftofindthe soulofthecharacterheaimedto become.
Soourroom,thecafeteria,even thehallsbetweenclassesbecame workshopsforhimashetriedon thelineshehadtospeakasifthey werehisown.AsIwatched,interÂŹ ested,perhapsalittleafraid,the characternotonlycametorule Chrisâswakinghours,itconsumed himwhole.OfcourseIwashappy forhim,butIalsocounteddown thedaystotheendoftheplayâs run when 1 could welcome back myfriendandgladlywavegoodÂŹ byetothetoughguyheâdbrought tolifeforamonth.
Chrisâsdedicationwasbeyond mygraspthen,butreturningto thosememoriesnow,IbelieveI wasluckytowitnesshisroundÂŹ triptoChicagoandback,because withoutit1mayneverhavefully appreciatedtheworkandsacriÂŹ fice demanded of hundreds of
