A Merry Xmas and Happy New Year to all our members and guests. Drift Café. Bar. Restaurant continues to provide great fresh and wholesome fare and this summer is no different. Head Chef Andy and his team have introduced a light and fresh new summer menu incorporating all the great summer seafood and salads as well as our proven flare such as schnitzels, roasts and steaks. They are also working on another great Valentine’s Day meal. The last two have been of exceptional quality. Members and guests have been flocking to the restaurant so make sure you look to book most nights of the week. The Club has been active on the community front sponsoring bowls events in support of famers suffering from the drought. The Men’s Bowling Club and Travelling Bowlers raising over $7,000 in support. The funds went straight to the Barradine district helping farmers with feed and supplies. The Octobra and our Corporate Jack Attack Competition raised over $3000 in support of the local Hastings Cancer Trust. Our Finance manager Claudia Buckby has been very busy training and raising funds to climb to Base Camp of Mt Everest next April. She has also been busy raising funds to support our staff charity, YP Space. YP Space provides emergency accommodation for homeless youths. If you’re looking for things to do in the New Year there will be Australia Day celebrations including an Australia v The World Bowls event and live music with Lockout. March also sees our Barefoot Bowls Jack Attack competition return. So gather your friends and nominate your team and join us Friday night to enjoy a few beverages and finger food after the game in the Club. The Board has recently undertaken to review the clubs strategic plan and is looking at opportunities to fully utilise the Clubs land holdings and hopes to release a master plan for the Club in the New Year. There are exciting opportunities ahead for the Club and bowls facilities. Hope to see you at the Club.

TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF? I am 24 years old and I am a builder by trade, this is my day job and keeps me very busy. My hobbies include obviously playing bowls, I enjoy AFL and I like fishing when I have the time. WHEN DID YOU START PLAYING BOWLS? I started playing bowls roughly when I was 11 years old, so I’ve been playing for about 13 years now. WHAT KEEPS YOU PLAYING BOWLS? WHAT DO YOU ENJOY ABOUT THE GAME? I think for me it’s the diversity of the sport, what was once seen as an older persons game is now becoming dominated by younger people. I enjoy that there’s not too many sports that you can play with good mates one week and then your grandparents another week. There is no other sport quite like bowls I guess.

WHAT IS YOUR GREATEST ACHIEVEMENT SO FAR? My greatest achievement was winning the 2018 state Bowls Premier League (BPL) Triples Championship. Also making the final four for under 25 NSW State singles competition was an awesome experience. WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU? What’s next for me? I would love to win a NSW state single championship and hopefully from that put myself in a position for NSW state team selection, THANKS JAI, GOOD LUCK IN THE FUTURE.

Our summer menu is HERE! Meet the mastermind behind Drift’s new summer menu, Head Chef Andy Whitehead. We had a chat with Andy to find out more about the new menu and to see where he got his inspiration from. What inspired the summer menu?
What sort of dishes can we expect?
Are there any of the old favourites?
A lot went into the process of creating the summer menu, I wanted to change the feel of the current menu and incorporate some new flavours and textures while keeping some of the old favourites that our members and guests love.
With trying to keep within the theme of the summer menu, words like light, fresh and bright became our focal point. We decided to create more seafood dishes because our local suppliers have some great fresh options to choose from and we also produced a few new types of salads to continue along with the overall lighter feel of the menu.
There sure are some of the old favourites, we wanted to keep everyone happy. Some of the old favourites returning include the Veal Scaloppini, Seafood Yellow Curry and Chicken Supreme to name a few. We will also continue to have our weekly specials, the Steak and Schooner Sundays, Tuesdays Chicken Schnitzel and Thursday Proper Roast nights.
The main inspirations came from the change of the season and local produce from the land and sea. I wanted the theme of the menu to feel fresh, bright and light as these were our points of reference when creating new dishes.
What local producers do you utilise? Here at Port City and especially at Drift we love utilising our local producers, I am a big fan of locals supporting locals. We currently use Waniora Village Butchery for all our meat needs, Kenny Little’s Fruit and Vegetables and Port Fresh Seafood. All great local businesses.
If you have to recommend one dish to sum up the menu what would it be? I would suggest the Pan Seared Barramundi Fillet, includes hand cut potato chips, a light seasonal salad finished with lemon oil and grilled lime. Perfect for summer! 9

Tell us all something we don’t know about you? I have a beautiful daughter who will be starting kindergarten in 2019, let’s just say she is growing up way too fast for my liking. I am also very interested in graphic design especially in branding and logo design. I aspire to have my own clothing label in the near future. I also designed an Aboriginal theme bowls shirt for the Club and have received some great feedback. It is currently on sale if you would like to check it out. How long have you been with the Club? What do you enjoy about working at Port City? I starting working at the Club on the 19th of February 2014. It’s been almost 5 years, time flies. What I enjoy most about the Club is the staff, the regulars and the visiting patrons from all walks of life I get to meet. I have enjoyed watching the Club grow and change over the years. It’s awesome to now be in a position to see and be a part of the direction the Club is headed in.
If you had six months with no obligations or financial constraints, what would you do with the time? I would love to go travelling with my daughter for six months, seeing as I finally got my passport (for those in on the joke). I would like to visit the Greek Islands like Mykonos, Santorini, Milos, Zakynthos for example and it would be also great visiting Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Cancun, Belize, the Bahamas to name a few. I think that would be the best way to spend six months with no obligations or financial constraints. If you were talking to someone visiting Port Macquarie for the very first time, where would you tell them to visit and what would you tell them about the Club? I would tell them (if they are up for it) to go for the big coastal walk from Town Beach to Lighthouse. If it’s a beautiful sunny day it is so worth it. I would definitely recommend going to dinner at Drift in Port City Bowling Club. The food is delicious, drinks are cheap, it’s a great location and has a lovely atmosphere (I’ve heard the staff there are the best too).

YP SPACE EVEREST BASE CAMP community project

COMING TO EVEREST BASE CAMP WITH US? In April 2019, Port City Bowling Club have arranged a major fundraiser for YP Space MNC Inc, with a team of 18 participants trekking to Everest Base Camp followed by a day helping to restore Bhadra Ghale School in Kathmandu. THE EXPERIENCE Guided by World Expeditions, our trek to the base of Mount Everest will surpass expectations. We ascend in true expedition style savouring the quintessential trekking experience with our guides, crew and porters as we ascend to the base of the world’s highest mountain. World Expeditions carefully devised itinerary allows ample time for safe acclimatisation - the key to any successful trek in the Everest region. The chosen trail leads through the famous villages of Namche and Khumjung as well as Thyangboche monastery that reflect the renowned Sherpa culture. We include ascents to Kala Pattar (5545m) from where our guides will point out the classic climbing routes to the summit. A foray is also included to Everest Base Camp from where expeditions prepare to climb the world’s highest peak. All nights are spent in exclusive private eco campsites and hand picked eco lodges. THE CHARITY Who is YP SPACE MNC Inc.? YP Space are a Not for Profit youth specialist homelessness service operating in the Port Macquarie/Hastings and Kempsey/Macleay LGAs for over 32 years. YPS works with young people, aged 12 to 25 years, who are homeless or at risk of homelessness across our target LGAs. Their services are not just limited to providing a safe place for young people but a range of emotional and financial support including life skills to help these young people move into a positive future. The majority of young people YPS supports are experiencing homelessness due to domestic and family violence, child abuse and family breakdown. Young people accessing YPS services have generally experienced significant trauma in their lives and have developed survival skills that are perceived as negative and impacting on their health and wellbeing. YP SPACE MNC Inc receives limited government funding and support. Port City Bowling Club limited started working alongside the YP Space MNC Inc’s amazing team in 2017, providing extra assistance in the form of funding whether it be donations tins, voluntary staff wage deductions and fund-raising days. WHAT CAN YOU DO? We still have places available on the trek. Our goal is for each participant to raise a minimum of $4,000 that goes direct to YP Space MNC Inc. Participants are required to pay for all their own travel expenses.
